that breaking news tonight is in san francisco, where a four-alarm fire that sent smoke across the bay area is now under control. but look at those flames. tonight a san francisco supervisor is furious with the fire department response. >> it is deeply troubling and disturbing. and i am calling for the fire chief's resignation. >> harsh words tonight from district 3 supervisor aaron peskin. but tonight san francisco's fire chief is defending her department's response. good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. right away let's get to abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian, who is live for us in north beach where that fire broke out. still very active behind you there. >> eric and dion, the fire is finally contained. it took a lot to put this fire out, which started just after 7:30 tonight. take a look. you can see firefighters are

still here on the scene. one person has been displaced. that's a business owner. and everyone in that white building with the blue ladder attached to it, they have all been evacuated due to water damage. this was a massive fire which engulfed the building which stands at the corner of powell and columbus. the top floors are vacant apartments. while there are five businesses on the bottom floor. firefighters first took an offensive mode and attacked this fire from the inside. but soon had to pull out and fight the fire from above and from the street. >> there was fire on the ground floor. i came through the stairs underneath the guys on the second floor. their incident commander assistant chief said we've got to pull these guys out, they started to pull them out. >> one minute everybody was out here celebrating and stuff st. patrick's day and the next minute it was like dante's inferno. >> north beach was packed tonight for st. patrick's day. a lot of restaurants were

evacuated. streets all around the fire were blocked off. while firefighters managed to stop the fire from moving into neighboring buildings and there were no injuries, criticism from supervisor aaron peskin, who represents this district. >> with my own eyes they completely totally failed to address this working fire in a quick, efficient way, and you can ask any of the people here who watched it from the beginning. the san francisco fire department has failed san francisco tonight. >> once we determined that we had no more life safety problems we pulled everyone out in an abundance of caution. that's what we do. i'm not going to get into too much more, but i would just like to say that we're professional firefighters, we know what we're doing. >> reporter: still supervisor peskin is calling for a hearing as well as an investigation. meantime the city vows to help anyone impacted from tonight's fire. live in north beach tonight, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> lisa, thank you very much.

a big crowd of people gathered as the flames broke out. take a look at these pictures sent by a viewer as the fire began growing. as lisa said, thankfully there are no reports of any injuries. >> now, in the meantime abc 7 news anchor dan ashley tweeted out this picture of the flames as seen from high up in north beach. >> viewers reported seeing the smoke from the east bay and north bay tonight. this is time lapse of the flames from our emeryville camera earlier this evening. >> and we do want to thank everyone who sent us mirkts or video and a reminder that you can always hashtag abc 7 news to let us know about breaking news where you live. we may share your pictures or vdeo online or on air. >> we have breaking news now out of the east bay. the highway patrol has shut down all eastbound traffic on interstate 80 near willow avenue in hercules while officers investigate a shooting. at least one and possibly two people have been wounded, and traffic is backed up all the way to pan ol. at least that's the last word we had. the shooting was first reported just after 9:00 tonight. no word yet on when the freeway

is going to reopen. turning to our weather now, talk about a mixed bag here. we had a day of sun and rain, even hail for parts of the bay area. >> an abc 7 viewer took this video of hail in clayton. that's actually hail, ice dropping down. >> san carlos also saw hail this afternoon. surprised residents went outside to see what was going on and said the clouds opened up and dumped a bunch of pea-size hail all at once. right away let's get to meteorologist drew tuma. >> things have certainly quieted down this evening. but earlier today we had hail, we had some lightning, even snow on our highest peaks. live doppler 7 is tracking it all right now. showing that active scan. it is quiet. you take it back a couple hours ago you can see it's very active as a line of showers worked through much of the bay area. not only showers. look at the storm reports from corte madera down to san carlos and even dublin. pea-size hail reported as these showers popped up across the

entire region. the showers have moved out. cold air is now moving in. future tracker temperatures tomorrow morning 7:00 in the morning. a lot of spots starting off in the 30s. while it's a cold start we're tracking warmer air on the way before our next storm moves into the region. timeline coming up in the full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> sounds good, drew, thank you. the search continues in the sierras tonight for a richmond man who went missing after a day of skiing at bear valley mountain resort. 65-year-old thomas malarkey's wife reported him missing when he failed to return to their cabin in arnold. tonight abc 7 news spoke to a crew from the marin county sheriff's search and rescue unit via face-time as they drove to alpine county to relieve their colleagues and join the search for malarkey. >> tom has the appropriate clothing. i understand he's got some skills as far as being able to make a snow cave. you know, which is labor intensive but it definitely greatly increases your survival profile in those types of situations. so we remain optimistic.

>> bad weather and avalanche dangers have hampered the efforts to find malarkey. nor snow is expected overnight but conditions should improve by tomorrow. >> looks like they're projecting no snow at all. really going to be a big push tomorrow. and even more family has been kind of arriving from the bay area and folks coming down from tahoe to supplement efforts. >> 60 people are expected to help with tomorrow's search. officials also plan to look at surveillance video from the ski area when mullarkey's lift tickets were scanned to hopefully zero in on his last known location. abc 7 news was in alameda when drivers faced delays entering the posey tube. crews will keep one lane closed while they fix an underground storm drain for the next week. drivers can save time by taking other routes from alameda to downtown oakland. a holiday dui checkpoint is taking on new meaning in hayward tonight, all in honor of chp officer andrew camilleri, who was killed by a suspected drufrn driver on christmas eve. >> abc 7 news reporter katie

utehs joins us with the latest on the checkpoint. >> reporter: so far 450 drivers have gone through this chp checkpoint and three people have taken field sobriety tests. fortunately, zero duis to report so far. but it is early. officers will be out after the bars close. >> stop. stop. >> reporter: officers from union city and hayward police departments teamed up with chp to stop cars along mission boulevard and lafayette avenue. >> last car's going to be the crown vic. first car's going to be the subaru hatchback. >> reporter: union city organized the dui checkpoint in honor of chp officer andrew camilleri, who was killed by a a suspected drunk driver on christmas eve. >> several of our officers who live in the tracy area did know him personally. so if affected us. >> we're excited. we're glad they gave us an opportunity to join them. and just for them to reach out

and do something in the memory of officer camilleri means a lot. >> reporter: i ahayward man, 22-year-old muhammad ali, slammed into the back of camilleri's patrol vehicle as he and his partner were pulled over on interstate 880 near highway 92. investigators say ali was drunk and high. >> another drink for you tonight? >> no. starbucks. >> starbucks? i'm jealous. >> reporter: officers from the three agencies worked to get impaired drivers off the street. just like camilleri was doing the night he was killed. >> he was funny. i mean, he always had a smile on his face. he was always joking around. he really liked being a chp officer and you could tell. >> no problem. you have a good rest of your night. >> reporter: in hayward, katie utehs, abc 7 news. developing news now involving recently fired deputy fbi director andrew mccabe. the associate press has learned mccabe kept personal memos detailing his interactions with president donald trump and has provided them to the special counsel's office. the memos are similar to notes compiled by dismissed fbi chief

barnard is in yountville with this story. >> reporter: there was music and lots of wine being poured for taste of yountville, an annual food and wine event attracting thousands of people. but many here are remembering three women who lost their lives march 9th while working at the pathway home, a treatment facility for vets dealing with ptsd. >> we're celebrating life and the beautiful lives of those three women. >> these women were doing their job. i do a similar job outside of the winery. and i don't know their families, but i could be them. >> reporter: army vet albert wong killed pathways director christine loeber and dr. jennifer gonzalez shushereba and jennifer golick. wong had been removed from the treatment program weeks before the shooting. taste of yountville is helping by asking patrons to use this credit card reader to donate money for a victims fund. >> everyone i know wants to help. our hearts are broken. we're sad for the program. we're sad for these families.

>> reporter: local wineries donated their best bottles for a silent action to benefit the three brave women fund. >> everything goes to the victims' families and then we're still continuing our support of pathway home and it's just a matter to figure out what their future holds. >> reporter: this wine country community trying to do its part in the wake of a terrible tragedy. >> as a local resident here with napa everyone comes out and everyone feels heartbroken. >> reporter: so many wineries donated bottles to this event. organizers will hold an auction on ebay next week to raise money for the victims' families. in yountville cornell barnard, abc 7 news. two helicopters rescued a man who'd been swept out to sea along the sonoma county coast. you're looking at video from a highway patrol helicopter showing a coast guard team reaching the man in jenner. officials say a sleeper wave hit the man while he climbed on some rocks and pulled him away from the shore. a state parks lifeguard stayed with him until the coast guard lifted him out of the ocean. the highway patrol then flew him to the hospital. he is reported in critical

condition. a man just trying to do a good deed used a knife to stab his would-be robber in the oakland hills. oakland police say it all happened on skyline boulevard at about 1:30 this morning. a couple from texas saw that a car had crashed into a tree, so they stopped to help. instead a man from the wrecked car pulled out a shotgun and tried to rob the good samaritans. the victim stabbed the suspect with a pocket knife after the two men got into a fight. you can even hear the suspect moaning as police spoke to their dispatchers. >> genera bleeding. >> the guy got stabbed. he shot at the victim. and i guess one of the victims were able to stab him. >> suspect is from newark, and he will be booked into jail when he's released from the hospital. well, thousands marched and many more lined the sidewalks of san francisco today to witness the city's 167th annual st.

patrick's day parade. parade organizers tell us it's the largest celebration of irish culture west of the mississippi. wish i could show you pictures of it. maybe we'll get those in later. and the bay area has a few more bald people than it did a few hours ago. i'm not talking about anybody sitting up here. several folks had their heads shaved for a good cause. abc 7 news was in oakland when ucsf benioff children children's hospital hosted its annual fund-raiser. police officers, firefighters and others get sponsored to have their heads shaved. the money goes to help fight childhood cancer. >> goes to a great cause. i lost my mother to cancer and one of my great friends, he has cancer. so i just want to fight the fight. >> i think it's a way for the community to come together and help hold up kids with cancer and their families that are going through a really difficult time and to tell them how much we really care. >> today st. baldric's event set out to raise $200,000. and organizers are still adding things up to see if they met

tonight on the corner of union and powell streets. flames you can see there shooting out of the building and heavy black shoek could be seen all across the bay. now, the red cross is helping those who were displaced. no one was hurt. no word yet on what caused the fire. at least 60 people are expected to join in the search for 65-year-old thomas mullarkey. he's a richmond man who went missing wednesday after a day of skiing at bear valley resort in alpine county. bad weather and avalanche dangers have hampered the search but improved conditions are expected for tomorrow. police in florida believe they've recovered everyone killed when a bridge collapsed onto a busy roadway next to a college. >> more questions are also emerging about the integrity of that bridge before it suddenly failed. abc news reporter linda lopez tells us more. >> crews succeeded in removing cars from the deadly bridge collapse at florida international university in miami. >> total of five people that were recovered from underneath the bridge. there was one individual that passed away at the hospital for a total of six people. and i believe that is the final

count. >> reporter: damaged cars then taken to the mktd examiner's off where the bodies are removed and identified. officials investigate a stunning voice male left by the florida department of transportation left two days before thursday's collapse by the lead engineer from one of the companies responsible for building the bridge. reporting cracks observed on the north end of the span. >> from a safety perspective we don't see that there's any issue there. so we're not concerned about it from that perspective. >> reporter: the florida department of transportation says their employee did not hear the voice mail until friday but a new statement from florida international university says it met with bridge engineers and fdot thursday morning and discussed the cracks. they concluded that "there were no safety concerns and the crack did not compromise the integrity of the bridge." and the national transportation safety board now confirming that construction workers were tritening the cables on the bridge at the time of the collapse. linda lopez, abc news, new york. facebook has suspended a data firm tied to president

>> that was terry moran reporting. an augmented reality game got a little too real for a couple of teens when a man attacked them with a tire iron because he was losing. the three were playing pokemon go in a park when one of the teens stole a pokemon character from the 60-year-old player. now, the man got a tire iron from his vehicle, started swinging it at the teens and then hit and damaged this table. the teens tackled him and called police. they say it's not the first time this man has become violent with other players. >> the people have told us he's been doing this before to other people and we were just the first to -- >> it was kind of weird. we didn't expect him to get out of his car and try to hit us. >> get so mad over a game. it's just stupid in our opinion. >> yeah, it's a little too intense. police did not have any record of similar incidents with the suspect, who is now in jail. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, he's 81 years young and getting ready tonight for his 33rd los angeles marathon

well, he's got a pictures and a rack of medals as well, and he's looking forward to breaking a record. >> this is so special. 81-year-old james smith has run every single los angeles marathon ever held and tomorrow will be no different. >> reporter rob hayes has the story. >> reporter: when it comes to the l.a. marathon -- not much has changed over the years. it's still 26.2 miles. it's still open to anybody who pays the entry fee. and it's still the place you'll find james smith plying the course. >> i know. it sounds stupid. and it is. i acknowledge that. it's not the most intelligent thing i've done in my life. >> reporter: that's because most of the people you see here do one l.a. marathon.

smith has done them all. >> i just stuck to it. i've been running since 1972 and done probably, oh, in excess of 100 marlths. and this will be the 33rd l.a. marathon that i've done. >> reporter: it's probably monitor to note that smith turns 81 next week. the retired orange county superior court judge used to do as many as seven marathons a year but these days he only does the l.a. run. unwilling to surrender his status as a legacy runner. one of roughly 140 people who finished every l.a. marathon. >> i sometimes wish i had missed one early on so i wouldn't have to think about keeping on the tradition type of thing. but i did and it's good for me. >> reporter: even though it nearly killed him in 2011 when he fell and hit his head near the 22-mile marker. >> turned out i had a subdural hematoma, ended up three days in intensive care. >> but he finished stubborn as ever as his wife judy would atte

well, the beauty of the ncaa tournament, you can put ten men on a basketball court from any conference and the game is up for grabs. no other sport can claim this. and we had a few great ones today. we tip off with 11 seed loyola chicago. looking to upset the third seed tennessee. eight seconds left. custer has ten points but none more important than this one. ramblers up one. tennessee oust time. up the floor a good look for the win but he can't get it to fall. loyola chicago with another upset heads to the sweet 16. 63-62 the final. michigan taking on houston in the west region. three seconds left. devon davis is going to miss two straight free throws.

no. but gators get the rebound. allen for a three. oh, he also misses. texas tech hangs on. 69-66 the final. top seed villanova taking on 9 seed alabama in the east region. mikhail bridges led his team with 23 pints. i think he threw down this alley-oop. wildcats up 14. bridges has some range too. 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. he had just one point in the first half. 22 the rest of the way. villanova advances to the sweet 16. 81-58 the final. for the women number one overall seed uconn taking on st. francis. huskies dominated start to finish. samuelsson, her sister played at stanford, had 18 points, and uconn led 55-19 after one quarter. it's more than st. francis had the entire game. bucket in the final seconds of the half gave uconn a 94-31 advantage. uconn would go on to win 140-52. st. francis would shoot 57
