fort. see what the surveillance video shows. also this morning, poll results for cynthia nixon as the "sex and the city" star enters the race for governor. and before you book your next flight, see the new study on which seat on the plane is the best pick. a good tuesday morning, everyone. we're going to begin with violent storms hitting overnight, the same storm system could bring significant snowfall to parts of the northeast tomorrow. >> overnight a reported tornado tore through this church about 60 miles east of birmingham, alabama. in other areas, massive hail pounded homes and cars. emergency shelters are now open and thousands are left without power. overnight a severe weather outbreak in the south. this morning, several reports of possible powerful tornadoes striking northern alabama. a lieutenant at the sheriff's

office in jacksonville, alabama, describing the area as a war zone. the powerful winds damaging buildings on the campus of jacksonville state university. the roof of this dorm now gone. this massive tree ripped from the ground. now leaning on the school's basketball arena and this dollar general torn apart. large hail also causing severe damage. the chunks of ice destroying more than 200 cars at this nissan dealership and nearly 400 cars at the nearby chevy dealership. >> all of these vehicles right at the moment's got damage. damaged windshields. damaged hoods. >> reporter: at the cullman county jail, debris scattered on the floor and holes are punched in the ceiling after hail tore through the building. steve quinn with our alabama station is there. >> i did get a chance to speak to sheriff matt gentry a little bit ago. he tells us none of the inmates inside this jail were harmed. there were vehicles outside in the parking lot they used that were damaged.

>> reporter: in atlanta, the rain and wind pounding city streets overnight, leaving plenty of power outages. the storms also causing damage outside the city following a tornado warning there. >> it's so dark right now, it's really hard to see but it's pretty bad. >> it's pretty bad all throughout the southeast. that storm, by the way, is now moving into the carolinas. washington, d.c., is expecting its biggest snowfall of the season. with this storm system, 65 million people may see measurable snow. and, oh, by the way, spring officially arrives today. >> doesn't feel like it. >> nope. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg is facing growing pressure to testify before congress about how data from millions of facebook accounts was used to influence the election. "the new york times" reports the head of security at facebook is planning to leave the company. this amid new questions about the methods used by political consulting group cambridge analytica. undercover video shows executives at the firm apparently offering to use bribes and sex workers to sway elections. let's get the latest from abc's

arlette saenz. arlette, good morning. >> reporter: diane and kendis, good morning. facebook says it's too early to say how they'll notify those 50 million users who were affected. they say the investigation into what happened is just getting started. facebook embroiled in controversy. >> we are unbelievably outraged and beyond disturbed at the allegations that data was misused or that our policies have been violated. >> reporter: at the center of the scandal the profiles of up to 50 million facebook users. data including hometowns, friends, and even likes allegedly accessed without users' consent, by researchers working with cambridge analytica, a company with ties to the trump campaign. new video from britain's channel 4 shows the political data firm giving an undercover reporter a sales pitch. >> if you're collecting data on people and you're profiling them, that gives you more insight that you can use to know how to segment the population to

give them messaging about issues that they care about. and we use that in america. >> reporter: another undercover video shows reporters meeting with one of the company's founders, alexander nix. who appears to promise ways to trap rival candidates. >> send some girls around to the candidate's house. on holiday. i'm just giving you examples of what can be done. >> reporter: facebook has banned cambridge analytica which says it never used the data and deleted it. the british information commissioner is seeking a warrant to access the firm's servers. in the u.s., lawmakers are demanding answers from facebook. >> i think it's time for the ceo, mr. zuckerberg, and other top officials to come and testify. >> reporter: facebook's stocks took a deep hit yesterday. shares fell by nearly 7%. the company's biggest one-day drop since 2014. diane and kendis. >> all right. that's arlette saenz live from d.c. for us. thanks, arlette. president trump is shaking

up his legal team. he's hired a fierce critic of the fbi, former u.s. attorney and tv pundit, joe digenova has claimed that the justice department tried to frame the president. he's also called current fbi director christopher wray an embarrassment. and from the russia investigation, the president's lawyers have reportedly turned over written documents about the the firings of james comey and michael flynn. "the washington post" says the move is part of an effort to limit the scope of any future face-to-face interview between the president and the special counsel robert mueller. breaking news in texas where authorities are investigating where another explosion is linked to a mystery bomber. the fbi son the scene at a fedex facility in schertz. one person was injrd in the blast. the package had an austin mailing address. sunday marked the fourth explosion in austin. that one set off by a tripwire. former fbi officials steve gomez

says authorities will focus on the background of the mystery bomber. >> they're going to be looking at anybody that would have any kind of bomb-making, explosive experience. former military. former bomb techs within law enforcement. some chemists. some of the academics that deal with chemistry and do experiments they have the ability to develop an exlosive device. add in electric experience they can make a device as well. >> reporter: two team people were killed in previous bombings. the motive is unclear. the legendary movie studio that harvey weinstein co-founded has now filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. the company also announced it is releasing any victims or witnesses to weinstein's alleged misconduct from their nondisclosure agreements. which had banned them from speaking publicly. dozens of women accuse weinstein of sexual misconduct. he has denied any wrongdoing. in the meantime, the advocacy group time's up claims an investigation into weinstein may have been mishandled by a prosecutor in 2015.

they want new york's governor to investigate. back to the weather now and we're tracking more than the severe storms in the south. the east coast is also bracing for the fourth nor'easter in less than a month. here's a closer look at your forecast for this tuesday. ♪ >> good morning. big storm impacting the ohio valley region and the east coast from roanoke all the way up towards boston. we could see three to six inches of snow in boston, new york, a little more than that in portions of west virginia and then in the deep south another round of dangerous thunderstorms with tornadoes targeting florida as well as up towards myrtle beach. then to the west, we have evacuations already in store with flooding to occur along with massive mudslides because of the burn scar and the mud that's going to flow from all of that. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. coming up a possible setback for self-driving cars. but first the company that may soon buy some toys "r" us

foul play is not ruled out right now. the forensic officers are there. they're assessing the scene and assessing the body. >> that's a police official in bermuda discussing the case of a 19-year-old college student from philadelphia found dead near a military fort on the island. mark dombroski, a freshman at st. joseph's university, traveled to bermuda with his parents and teammates for a rugby tournament. he was last seen leaving a bar on saturday, but investigators say there's no evidence alcohol was a factor. his body was found in a moat not

far from police headquarters. no word yet on the cause of death. his mother says he had suffered an injury and just wanted to get home. >> i have reviewed the camera tapes, and in reading his language, body language, my assessment is that he was not feeling well. he had sustained a shoulder injury in the rugby tournament that day. he's definitely favoring his arm. he wasn't enjoying the party atmosphere as some of the boys were. my assessment is he wanted to get going. i think he wanted to probably get back to where they were staying. >> back in pennsylvania, friends and relatives gathered for a vigil. police say dombroski appeared to be using a cell phone when he was leaving the bar. it's unclear who he may have been calling. the younger brother of the man accused of killing 17 people at a florida high school has been arrested for trespassing at that school. police say zachary cruz told them he wanted to reflect on the school shooting and soak it in.

a sheriff's deputy says cruz had been warned several times to stay away from that campus. another well-known retailer has filed for bankruptcy. the teen jewelry store claire's will stay open as it restructures nearly $2 billion in debt. the company has struggled as more shoppers skip the mall and favor shopping online. amazon is considering whether to buy some toys "r" us stores after the chain announced it's closing. bloomberg says amazon would use the vacant locations for its own purposes and is not actually interested in preserving the brand. but speaking of a brand, kb toys could be making a comeback in the wake of toys "r" us shutting down. kb closed nearly a decade ago but the company that bought the brand is now in talks to open pop-up stores in malls before the holiday season. >> ah, nostalgia. >> yes, bring back circuit city while we're at it. >> yes, let's do it. when we come back, important news for travelers. the best seat to pick on a plane. but first new details about the deadly crash involving a

>> our investigation did not show at this time that there were significant signs of the vehicle slowing down. >> reporter: monday, uber suspending its self-driving test across the country after police say one of its autonomous hit and killed a woman. police say it happened late sunday. she was walking with her bike outside the crosswalk when she was hit. there was a driver in the vehicle, but he wasn't in control when the crash happened. >> these vehicles are trained to see pedestrians, to see cyclists, to see red lights, and so it's really unclear what went wrong here. >> reporter: uber's ceo on twitter repeating the company statement saying they will work with local law enforcement to understand what happened. in arizona, autonomous vehicles are legal as long as they are registered and insured. >> i think this incident affects a lot more than just uber. i think it's going to have a ripple effect across the entire self-driving industry. >> reporter: there have been other autonomous vehicle accidents like this tesla crash in los angeles in january where no one was injured.

but this appears to be the the first case of a pedestrian death caused by an autonomous vehicle. >> we also know that occasionally things will go wrong and fatalities are likely to happen but the hope and expectation even today is that over time, we'll be saving a lot more lives. >> reporter: the county attorney will decide if charges will be filed. and the national transportation safety board will now investigate. kendis and diane. >> danya bacchus for us. thank you, danya. we're hearing from a hiker who survived nearly five days in the california desert with no food or water. 54-year-old paul hanks' birthday hike took a dangerous turn when he fell 20 feet, injuring his leg in joshua tree national park. he crawled for miles and then survived on cactus, rainwater, and even his own urine until rescuers finally found him. >> hey, whatever it takes. >> these three angels appeared out of nowhere, and i was -- i was shocked. i had written myself off as dead. that i was never going to see

good morning on this tuesday, march 20th. it's 4:27 in the a.m. already a lot going on this morning. we do the weather first. >> we do. hey, mike. it's been a noisy morning so far. in all seriousness it's rather quiet outside weatherwise. let's take a look at what's going on. we are much milder. the low to mid-50s until you get to the north bay where we have mid to upper 40s. live doppler 7, you can see radar returns near the coast. will it reach the ground? that's going to be the key because the air is so dry underneath this mid level moisture. right now most of it is not. there is the potential as we head throughout the day so the storm impact scale, moderate in spots. less than a quarter of an inch. one, light. i'll show you how it affects your day with the accuweather

12-hour planner. >> we do have a problem on the counter commute side of 580. eastbound 580 before you get to vasco road in livermore area, two semis got into a collision about 30 minutes ago. a lot of damage done and there was an oil spill involved. they are calling for a caltran sweeper to come through and clean that up. they could have to do it a full closure while the sweeper comes through. i will let you know if that happens. on the eastbound side things are still looking good. we'll look at good news for east bay drivers in just a few. another bombing in texas. this time just outside san antonio. one person was hurt after an explosion at a fedex facili still too early to confirm if the incident was related to the four in austin. federal agents say it is likely linked to attacks by what they
