california as the state braces for the strongest storm of the year. an important health warning for people who like their meat well done. a brave bald eagle goes to new extremes to protect the nest. a good thursday morning, everyone. we begin with the new evidence in the austin serial bombings case. the bomber left mibehind abehina confession. >> they have issued an all clear at his house after evacuate straighting a five-block radius. several questions remain. some three weeks after the start of the bombing spree that terrorized the city of 2 million. this morning, an apparent confession in the austin serial bombings. investigators say mark conditt left a 25-minute recording on his phone detailing his plot. >> on this recording the suspect

describes the six bombs that he constructed with a level of specificity that he identified the differences among those six bombs. >> reporter: in the recording police say conditt does not mention terrorism or hate or why he chose the victims he did. >> it is the outcry of a very challenged young man talking about challenges in his personal life that led him to this point. >> reporter: conditt was able to elude authorities for weeks after allegedly triggering a bombing spree that killed two people and wounded at least five. it all ended when police say conditt set off a bomb in his suv as the s.w.a.t. team moved in. >> the suspect detonated a bomb inside the vehicle, knocking one of our s.w.a.t. officers back and one of our s.w.a.t. officers fired at the suspect as well. >> reporter: conditt's pink glove seen in this surveillance image at the fedex store are one of the trademarks that led police right to him. investigators reportedly discovering those distinct gloves were available at a

nearby home depot and surveillance video from that store appeared to show the suspect and his license plate. investigators also matched the images with receipts saying he used the alias kelly killmore to send packages. while he changed tactic, the atf says he did have a signature. >> so you actually had atf technicians piece together physically these bombs after they exploded. >> after the second one, we knew exactly what the first two looked like. >> reporter: until now conditt was not known to the authorities. the only thing on his record, a traffic violation. but this morning we're learning more about his personal life. neighbors and acquaintances describe him as a loner fired from his job last year for not meeting expectations but never suspecting anything like this. >> he was a kid. neighborhood kid. always believed that he was very smart. >> reporter: in a statement his family saying they're devastated and saying we had no idea of the

darkness that mark must have been in. and police have given no indication so far that the bomber had any accomplices. as for his background he was homeschooled and then dropped out of college. one friend said he had strong political opinions but as to how and why he may have targeted the victims that remains a mystery. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg has issued his first on camera response to the data scandal plaguing his company admitting mistakes were made. mean while as an anti-facebook movement grows online, the whistle-blower who revealed how facebook profiles were allegedly exploited by political consultants has agreed to testify before congress. abc's stephanie ramos has the new details for us, good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: diane, good morning. facebook executives were on capitol hill yesterday answering some tough questions but lawmakers want to hear directly from facebook's ceo over the misuse of its data. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg is now admitting messed up after 50 million

americans had their user profiles exploited allegedly by cambridge analytica, a firm hired by the trump campaign. >> so, this was a major breach of trust and i'm really sorry that this happened. we have a basic responsibility to protect people's data. >> reporter: the apology on cnn comes days after the story broke and more than two years since the company learned of the privacy breach aimed at swaying facebook users in the 2016 presidential election. >> i think what's clear is that in 2016 we were not as on top of a number of issues as we should have whether russian interference or fake news. >> reporter: the company obtained it from this manage computer scientist aleksandr kogan. >> did they tell you what they were going to do with your data. >> political consulting but beyond that no idea. >> reporter: zuckerberg said facebook has taken steps to prevent it from happening again. christopher wylie who left cambridge analytica in 2014 says before the campaign even began,

the firm was gauging public opinion on phrases that would become trump staples. >> we are going to drain the swamp. >> reporter: wylie has agreed to testify before congress as special counsel robert mueller zeros in on cambridge analytica's relationship with the trump campaign. facebook's stock has dropped even more after this fallout but zuckerberg says he hasn't seen, quote, a meaningful number of people deleting their facebook accounts because of the scandal. those who do should know even after you suspend your account it could take up to 90 days for it to be fully deleted from the site. back over to you guys. >> reporter: stephanie ramos live from d.c. for us, thafks. abc news learned the recently fired deputy director at the fbi once opened a secret investigation into whether jeff sessions committed perjury. andrew mccabe launched it last year into when sessions misled congress about his interactions with the russians while he worked with the trump campaign. the investigation was ultimately

closed with no action taken. one source says sessions was not aware of the probe when he fired mccabe but a lawyer representing sessions declined to confirm that. >> reporter: sources say president trump is furious after someone in the white house leaked details of his call to vladimir putin. "the washington post" reports the president ignored a written warning in capital letters from his advisers not to congratulate putin on his re-election. the white house says someone could be fired over the leak. only a handful of people knew what was on those briefing notes. >> i really hate that there's someone in his inner circle that's willing to leak this stuff. if you don't like working for the president resign your job. >> reporter: mean while with the midterm elections around the corner both republicans and democrats are demanding better election security. senators are describing the threat posed by russia as urgent. let's turn to the weather and the northeast is digging out from that nasty nor'easter that's targeting new england right now. schools are closed in boston for today. thousands of flights have been canceled as well throughout the

region and more than a foot of snow falling outside new york city and philadelphia. in southern california residents are bracing for heavy rain today. that could trigger mudslides. >> tens of thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate further north a rare tornado spotted north of sacramento. minor damage reported and now a closer look at your forecast for this thursday. good morning. a push of moisture coming off the pacific making it wet and n unsettled throughout the northwest but through the southwest thanks to subtropical moisture, look for flooding and once again another round of possible mudslides. through the northeast still the nor'easter cranking up strongly with storms hitting boston down to new york with a chance of windy conditions and regional power outages. in addition to that the nor'easter affect is in effect because all this snow is smelting and blockbustering black ice everywhere along the east coast. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams.

we're back with video of a san francisco pic frantically crawling to safety after being shot in the leg during a shootout with a suspect inside a barber shop. police had responded to reports of a man with a gun. it's unclear why the suspect opened fire. he and four other people were also injured. the officer is in fair condition. two of president trump's cabinet secretaries are under new scrutiny for their travel expenses. politico on daned documents

showing ryan zinke and his wife took a security detail with their trip to greece and turkey. it provided security because of violence in the region, they say. epa administrator pruitt spent $118,000 on flight, many in first class during his first year on the job. the epa approved them because pruitt received, quote, an unprecedented number of threats. a developing story overnight from overseas. two american tourists have been killed in a helicopter crash in australia. the chopper went down near the great barrier reef. the victims were both from hawaii. two other americans from colorado were injured, as well. the helicopter company's secretary crash in four month, we're told. authorities promise a full investigation. nearly half a million smoke detectors are being recalled because of a big problem. they may not detect smoke. they're made by kidde and were sold at walmart, home depot and

was the last time i got to hold her and that was saturday. >> so the grandmother was awarded custody of the baby by the tribal court. she has not been heard from since. more than a month after the deadly high school shooting in parkland, florida, new security measures are being put into place. students will be allowed to carry only clear backpacks and will be required to wear i.d. badges at all times. they're sending eight armed trooper to secure every entrance at that high school. youtube is extending crackdown on videos that show weapons and will block videos that show how to install bump stocks and ban videos that promote websites selling guns. school bullying, the allegation was made at a school board meeting and the accused bully is the school superintendent. greg gay took the podium during an open forum and described how he was bullied in junior high school back in the 1970s by the man who is now the head of the school district. he says the bullying was so bad he tried to take his own life.

good morning sou south bay. let's get up and get going. good morning. it's thursday, march 22nd. we hope you are starting your morning off right. >> you're starting it off wet. we have live doppler 7 behind us. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. this is supposed to be the heaviest rain this week, right? >> yes, this morning. it will taper this afternoon. we'll get a little break. the morning commute will be the wettest as you can see from 101 and 880. even the south bay getting wet this morning. here's a look at the heavier returns across the san mateo bridge into hayward and up through crow canyon into san ramon and the valley. we have more yellows and oranges crossing the peninsula and heading more towards the south -- southern half of the bay. temperatures, even 60s out there. it is very mild. we'll take a look at the

accuweather 12-hour planner and our storm impact scale next. >> we have a busy start on the roads as you would expect with these roads, mike and i have live doppler 7 over our maps. yep, we already have a handful of crashes. westbound 580 near lakeshore avenue. solo vehicle spinout crash. currently blocking the right shoulder and spilling over into the right lane. we did have a backup. looks like it's starting to thin out. a soggy drive into san francisco. we had a wrong-way driver on the lower deck of the bay bridge that resulted in a crash. they cleared that about 15 minutes ago. another collision in castro valley. we'll check on that next. alexis, thank you. it's going to be a busy morning. as we've been telling you, a wet morning across the area. >> let's check in with matt keller who is live in downtown los gatos. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and jessica. i'm wandering the dark streets, the rainy streets of downtown los gatos.

it's not going to be a good morning for people who want to stay dry or get to work on time. the commute is going to be bad. it's going to be a rough morning for a lot of people out there. check it out on highway 17. i'll show you how dangerous it is while you're driving out there. the downpours not helping. this is northbound on highway 17 into los gatos. a bunch of crashes yesterday and today's rain could be worse. conditions may cause confusion. a wrong way driver on 280 and saratoga. the rain can make visibility a major issue for drivers. of course, we see this much rain, we often see this. a giant oak tree came crashing down on the san lorenzo elementary school. it crashed seven cars and smashed through the windows of a multipurpose room. thankfully, no one was hurt in that. of course, this rain can be intense at times.

more people are heading out on the roads. we can see a lot of crashes. i'm sure alexis is going to be very busy this morning. reporting live, matt keller, abc 7 news. more people are ready to evacuate today if heavy rain triggers flash floods and mudslides. there was no real damage yesterday. hundreds of homes in areas hit by december's wildfires are under mandatory evacuation this morning because of the risk of slides and flooding. montecito and santa barbara county one of those communities. that's where 21 people died when rain triggered a massive debris flow in a burn area on january 9th. steady rain expected through tomorrow. >> we're watching things closely for our friends down south and watching our own rain here. let get a quick update on weather and traffic where you live. mike? >> thanks, jessica. we'll start with the storm impact scale.
