this is how many people ened up at the sacramento kings game last night. as you can see, basically empty stands. here's the reason why. >> protesters are angry over a police shooting of an unarmed african american man. they stopped thousands from getting into the guy. >> kaena whitworth has more. >> shutting down the interstate at the height of rush hour. calling for justice after the police shooting of an unarmed black man. they blocked sacramento kings fans from entering the arena much the team closing the arena before starting the game with a delay in front of nearly empty stands. the tensions sparked by this disturbing video in which stephan clark was killed, captured on police body cameras. police pursuing a burglary suspect when they approached clark in his grandmother's backyard. the 22-year-old father of two

advanced towards them and they feared for their safety. but police say clark never had a weapon, only a cell phone. coming up at 7:00 a.m., the controversy over police body camera policy. with your gma first look, i'm kayna whitworth. the kings owner spoke to fans immediately after the game ended. >> first of all, i wanted to express our deepest sympathies to the family. what happened was absolutely horrific and we are so very sorry for your loss. >> he also said he and the kipgs respect the right of people to protest peacefully. we are getting new details about the suspect killed in a shootout that left a san francisco police officer and four other people hurt. abc 7 news has learned it was this man's family who called.

he showed up at their house with a gun. surveillance footage shows people scrambling after he was confronted inside of the amazon barbershop. he had a violent past including an arm robbery 24-year-old deputy ryan zirkle was responding to an emergency call when his cruiser went off the highway and crashed into a tree last week. a public memorial will be held today at the marin center veterans memorial auditorium. that starts at 11:00 a.m. deputies zirkle joined the sheriff's office 2 1/2 years ago. he grew up in novato. he's survived by his parents, siblings and a fiance. a driver is dead after a car ran into the main gate on wednesday and burst into flames. witnesses say the explosion sounded like fireworks. >> the car basically just blew up. like, it was nothing anymore. >> it kept explodinexploding.

boom, boom. kept on going. >> u.s. officials tell abc news the driver was a civilian, not a service member. they say it appears there were propane tanks in the car. the driver may have ignited them on purpose. classes resume at diablo valley college with more police patrolling campus. >> that's because a serious threat canceled classes. we first brought you this as breaking news. >> graffiti on campus threatened gun violence. that caused officials to close the school for the day. they did it as a precaution and found no evidence to suggest a greater than usual risk to students or staff. it looks like a terminal at sfo will be renamed to honor harvey milk. they voted to approve that legislation yesterday. it's going to name terminal 1 after the lgbt pioneer. this has been a long time coming. ampos was the first to push to honor milk. the full board will vote on april 3rd.

car crash while on duty. amy hollyfield is live for us in san rafael. >> reporter: a grateful community is expected to turn out to remember this sheriff's deputy. ryan zirkle was only 24 years old. he had been with the sheriff's department for 2 1/2 years. his loss leaves a tremendous void in the department. he was responding to a 911 call when he lost control of his car and hit a tree. it had rained earlier, so the curvy road was wet. zirkle is from here. he graduated from san marin high school in novato where he was the quarterback of the football team, point guard of the basketball team and known for always having a smile on his face. >> he's so young. so full of energy. just full of life. the student he was, the leader. this whole community, the school meant so much to him. he had so much ahead of him. >> reporter: here is a look at the solemn procession on highway

going to be with us. >> police confronted clark after getting a call about a man breaking into cars. they say they believed he posed a threat when they fired 20 shots. they thought he had a firearm. in fact, he was holding a cell phone. congress has averted another shutdown after approving a $1.3 trillion spending bill. they passed the package late last night and it heads to the white house where president trump is expected to sign it. government funding was set to expire tonight if this deal wasn't reached. it provides big increases to military and domestic programs. the deal budgets $2 billion a year for ten years to fight wildfires. last year, it cost california close to $2 billion to fight fires. pg&e is unveiling its own plan to reduce the wildfire threat. utility giant wants to add to its network of weather stations across california to monitor conditions and risks in real-time. prevention, they say, is key. that's why during the fire

season they will be in contact 24/7 with cal fire. they also plan to hire out of state firefighters and have them on stand by. pg&e says it will require keeping trees and limbs farther from power lines. wood poles will be a inning of the past eventually as they are replaced with nonwood material. hundreds of thousands of people are descending on washington, d.c. for a march to demand new gun control laws. march for life was sparked after the shooting in parkland, florida. a gunman killed 17 people. marches are planned across the nation, including in san jose, oakland and san francisco. all of the events will also honor the parkland victims. lyft providing free rides at the events in san francisco, san jose and oakland. the company is providing $1.5 million worth of rides. you can find out how to sign up for one and check the list of local events on abc7news.com. a dam west of yosemite national park is holding steady after it teetered on the brink

of bursting. yesterday afternoon, rushing water from a moccasin reservoir dam flooded the california fish and wildlife hatchery. the dam would likely fail after heavy rain saturated the area. the floodwaters were -- a mile downstream. the san francisco public utilities commission is monitoring the situation. it says the spill way is damaged. everything will be inspected. crashes on highway 17 are starting to return to precarious levels. our media partner, the mercury news reports 800 collisions reported last year on the windy four-lane road. it had dropped to 500 a year. after a $250 million campaign to make the street safer. they attribute the rise to wet weather, dangerous driving. chp reminds drivers to slow

no backups, no major incidents to speak of. really a lot of green on the traffic maps. one new minor issue popped up. northbound 87 before the 280 merge in san jose. we have reports of hit and run collision. it doesn't sound like any lanes are blocked there and no injuries either. that should not be a major factor. mass transit looking good. no significant delays there this morning either. we'll look at that in a few. breaking news that happened overnight. a huge and deadly fire on the set of a movie starring edward norton. a 37-year-old firefighter was killed. look at these huge flames. this was in harlem in new york city. i have a big update for you at this hour. actor edward norton and others were indeed inside when the fire began. they released a statement moments ago giving their condolences to the family of the fallen firefighter and saying, in part, quote, we watched firsthand with astonishment as they charged into the smoke to

let's talk positive news. we've nearly doubled our snow pack this month. while it's not great, it's better than it was when we started the month. it's going to be quiet today. mid-60s with cloud cover in the south. 6:00 this evening through 9:00 sunday morning, another winter storm warning. up to 2 1/2 feet of the drier, fluffier, nice to ski in snow. it's going to be moderate tomorrow. might snow sunday. a few showers monday and a sign of spring with temperatures in the 50s by thursday.

reggie? the former playboy playmate who had a ten-month romantic affair with president trump before he was in the white house is pushing back against claims that there is no truth to her allegations. karen mcdougal spoke with cnn about the relationship she had with the president more than a decade ago. >> i can tell you someone is lying. it's not me. it's a little hurtful. but at the same time i have to understand that if he were to told he hoped he didn't do it, i understand. he's trying to protect his family, his image, things like that. >> mcdougal's interview is two days after she filed a lawsuit in a california court seeking to invalidate a contract she signed with american media incorporated, the parent company of the national enquirer. they purchased the rights to her story for $150,000. but it never published the story about her alleged affair with president trump. bay area law enforcement says it happens every day.

laptop theft at coffee shops and cafes. a woman refused to be a victim. a woman standing near the counter next to her at a starbucks in castro valley swiped her laptop and rang. she sprang into action and chased the thief. misty well born saw what happened and followed to help. >> super human strength. i never ran that fast in my life before. >> i had her back. whatever she was doing, i'm doing with her. >> they followed the thief to the car, struggled to get the laptop back. although taking the law into your own hands is not recommended, the alameda sheriff's office is impressed. the golden gate bridge eliminated toll collectors, now the district managing the span is looking at ways to update the system that charges you when you drive across. right now, sensors located near the old tollbooths reed fastrak transponders or capturing images of license plates to charge the bridge toll. welsh today, a bridge district

we have up to 100 dogs running around in a pack, all breeds, all sizes. >> you get to run around with 100 dogs on a daily basis. do you have the best job in the world? >> i'm pretty sure i do. i love my job, it's incredible. >> colleen, what's the idea behind this type of shelter or rescue operation? >> we're just looking towards helping shelters be able to do more social interaction with the dogs because the cage model which is antiquated and did its job. we know enough that they need to be socialized more. the more we can socialize them, the less risk we have at bad behaviors and the potential for euthanasia. we like to socialize our pups. >> we're running out of time. tell me their names. >> pix. he's about four months old. this is pixie who looks like baby groot. they're both available for adoption. >> colleen, you brough nine puppies today. >> including casper.

the lightest of the green. be careful up there. for the rest of us, we have to wait until the afternoon and evening hours. mainly in the north bay through the morning hours. snow levels drop from 4,000 to 3,000 sunday. it looks like it could be breezy this afternoon and evening. here's my 12-hour planner. dress for temperatures significantly cooler this morning. mid 30s to low 40s. mid to upper 50s all afternoon with the best chance of showers this evening. let's talk more about the dry commute. alexis? >> the roads not helping us out. here's a look at san rafael southbound, 101 traffic heading way from us. yesterday when we checked this camera, we were soaked and had road spray kicking up. nice break today with the mostly dry commute. maybe a stray sprinkle or two on the windshield. one of our only trouble spots before the 280 merge, we had a hit-and-run crash reported. very minor. that has cleared from the board. we'll check out drive times next.
