hurt. abc 7 news has learned it was his own family that called 9-1-1 saying he showed up at their house with a gun. surveillance footage shows people scrambling when shots rang out after police con fronted him inside of the barbershop. he had a violent past including an armed robbery conviction. the community is coming together to honor a deputy killed in a crash. ryan zirkle was responding to an emergency call when his cruiser crashed into a tree last week. a public memorial is going to be held today at the marin center veterans memorial auditorium. the service starts at 11:00 a.m. depp zirkle joined the force 2 1/2 years ago. he's survived by his parents, two older brothers and fiance. this morning, the fbi is investigating a possible attempted attack at travis air force base. a driver is dead after a car ran into the main gate on wednesday

and burst into flames. witnesses say the explosion sounded like fireworks. >> the car basically just blew up. like it was nothing. >> it kept exploding. boom, boom. kept on going. >> officials tell abc news the driver was a civilian, not a service member. they say it appears there were propane tanks in the vehicle. the driver may have ignited them on purpose. california's senate delegation is calling for an investigation into the resignation of the san francisco i.c.e. spokesperson. it followed a contentious couple of weeks where libby schaaf warned of impending raids. sweeps happened in the bay area and i.c.e. blasted the mayor for her actions. the spokesman resigned saying he could not spread false information. classes will resume at diablo valley college in pleasant hill with more police patrolling campus. >> that's because a serious threat canceled classes yesterday. this was brought as breaking

news. graffiti on campus threatened gun violence and that caused officials to close the school for the day. they did it as a precaution. they found no evidence to suggest a greater than usual risk to student or staff. a controversial statue in san francisco's civic center will not be removed yet. according to the chronicle, an attorney is challenging the historic preservation commission to move the early day statue into storage. the statue shows a native american man at the foot of a cowboy and april catholic missionary. people who want it removed say it's racist and demeaning. the attorney says it's part of history and moving it is like destroying it. it looks like a terminal at sfo will be renamed to honor harvey milk. they recommended approving the legislation yesterday. it would name terminal 1 after the lgbt pioneer. it's been a long time coming. former supervisor david campos was the first to push to honor

it's 6:14. we're learning more about the couple falsely cuesed of a kidnapping hoax in vallejo. earlier this week, denise huskins talked about what happened after she was taken from her boyfriend's bed three years ago. now we're hearing the boyfriend's side of the story. aaron quinn says he had been getting pre-recorded messages months before the kidnapping telling him to pay $17,000 or

else. he says the kidnapper threatened to kill denise if he called 9-1-1. he went to vallejo police for help anyway. >> when the police came, they kept on accusing me of were you partying? i gave them permission to search through my house and access my e-mails. the kidnappers were e-mailing. they interrogated me for 18 hours, called me a murderer. telling me, if you continue telling us this crazy story, we're going to paint you as a cold, calculated monster. >> matthew muller was arrested three month later for huskins' kidnapping. he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. the couple says the police never apologized. this is their first tv interview. you can hear more on 2020 tonight. the school board made a controversial decision to change the mascot and logo at two schools. tempers flared but emotions strong at the napa valley

overnight. here's alexis. good morning, mike. after a really quiet start this morning, we're starting to have a few more issues roll in. overall, a friday light commute. taking you into 880, the southbound side, state route 92, we have a multicar crash that's blocking the center lane. they're working to get that cleared. in the meantime, a backup forming. the bay bridge commute was another trouble spot. westbound 80 off ramp to free mo mont. they were able to clear the last vehicle. that is totally back open. no delays heading into san francisco. we have one new issue in the tri-valley. we'll check on that next. right now i want to update you on the hostage situation and what's being called a terrorist act in southern france. we know at least two people are dead, at least a dozen wounded. happening now in the small town of trebes. it's near toulouse if you're familiar with the country.

call when he lost control of his car on highway 1 and hit a tree. it had rained earlier. so the curvy road was wet at the time. zirkle graduated from san marin high school in novato. administrators there fondly remember him. >> i would see him and talk to him and ask him how he was doing in his pursuit of law enforcement. i just thought that was perfect for him. he was just so happy with what he was doing. >> here is a look at the solemn procession we saw along highway 101 as his body was transferred to the funeral home. the funeral is at the marin veterans memorial at 11:00 this morning. zirkle is survived by his parents, two brothers and his fiance. he was 24 years old. reporting live in san rafael, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news much. thank you, amy. new this morning, a rude awakening for a pleasant hill family this morning. a giant tree fell from their yard on to their cars. you can see part of tree hit at least two cars and it's blocking

the street. the family says they heard a loud crash around midnight. >> it was dead quiet when it happened. no wind, no rain, nothing. i assume it was because of the accumulation of the rain we had weakened what roots it had. down it came. >> no one was hurt. the pg&e lines are okay. but the family will need to buy a new car. public works will remove the tree. now to the outrage that's continuing to grow in sacramento after the shooting of an unarmed man. >> they prevented thousands of fans to get into the hawks/kings games. >> officials locked the entrances and stopped admitting fans after protesters surrounded the arena. there was this body camera footage released of stephan clark in his grandmother's backyard. clark's girlfriend is struggling to find answers to help their two children cope with their father's death. >> wake up every morning to my kids asking me where is daddy?

let's go get daddy. i just tell them, daddy is always going to be with us. >> police confronted clark after getting a call about a man breaking into cars. officers believe clark posed a threat and then they fired 20 shots. they thought that he had a firearm. it turns out he was carrying a phone. now a live desk update. overnight, a huge and deadly fire that's making national headlines. it was on the set of a movie starring edward norton. a 37-year-old firefighter was killed and look at the video we have. also in the video. huge flames there in harlem in new york city. actor edward norton and others were inside when this began. they released i i a statement giving condolences to the family of that firefighter and saying quote, in part, we watched firsthand with astonishment as they charged into the smoke to make sure that all were out safely. the firefighter identified as

37-year-old michael davidson and he was a veteran of that force for 15 years. back to you. jessica, thank you. in the south bay, crashes on highway 17 are starting to return to precarious levels. our media partner, the mercury news reports 800 crashes were reported on the windy four-lane road from scotts valley to los gatos. accidents dropped to less than 500 a year between 2003 and 2014. after a $250 million campaign to make highway 17 safer. officials attribute the recent rise to aggressive driving and wet weather. pg&e is unveiling a plan to reduce the wildfire threat. the utility giant wants to add to the network of weather stations across california to monitor conditions and risks in real-time. pre veng, they say, is key. that's why during the fire season they'll be in contact 24/7 with cal fire. they also plan to hire out of state firefighters and have them on stand-by.

i have a couple new issues to talk about in the north bay. southbound 101 past the 580 split a mile south of there. we're creating a -- a vehicle cut across lanes of traffic. we have injuries. they are sending an ambulance and chp is on the way to the scene as well. new problems southbound 101 near trimble. waiting for sensors to catch up. we have a backup forming. dee pre and hazard on the northbound side of 101 in the same area. traffic a little stop and go through that stretch. here's the live look outside 101 and 880. maybe that little delay for the folks heading toward us and heading towards those incidents. a quick check of drive times here. westbound 580, tracy to dublin. you are in the yellow at 39 minutes. a crash near isabel. i'll talk about that next. antioch to concorde 19. san rafael to san francisco, in the yellow at 20 minutes. 6:52 now. law enforcement says this happens every day. laptop thefts at coffee shops
