good morning. it is saturday, march 24th. i'm alexis smith in for chris nguyen. let's start with a q the wemather. let's get over to lisa argen. >> we have everything out there. 1 on our storm impact scale right now. the main system moved through while you were sleeping. we still have showers today. a cold system arrives tonight into tomorrow morning with scattered showers. snow levels anywhere from 2,500 to 3,000 feet. so we're talking about a cold system with a chance of thunderstorms. as we put that in motion, you see still looking at the rain.

highway 1, pacifica, and further south into the santa cruz mountains. there's fog from napa, fairfield, santa rosa, advi visibility on the coast. scattered showers. upper 40s for most right now. another cool afternoon ahead. emeryville looks a little gray there with low to mid 40s for much of the east bay and for the next couple of hours, we'll see the clouds and sun a mix out there with 50s. in fact, we'll be well below average. a few peeks of sun and another cold front moves through throughout the day. evening showers. and we could see a few areas getting some light snow. maybe mt. hamilton. we'll talk about a warm week ahead coming up. hundreds of thousands of people will take part in today's march for our lives. marches are planned across the country including in the bay area. this is a live look at the crowd gathered in parkland, florida, right now. people there will march to the

marjory stoneman douglas high school and hold a moment of silence for the 17 people that died in last month's mass shooting. back in the bay area, this map shows several marches today including san francisco, oakland and san jose. students want lawmakers to address gun laws and school safety. among the people you might see today is warriors coach steve kerr. he was asked before last night's game if he was going to attend one of the marches. >> i think i'm going to stay right here in oakland. i haven't quite planned it out yet. i think my family and i will take part in the oakland. >> some of the students and parents from stoneman douglas high school flew to washington, d.c. on the new england patriots plan. lyft is providing free rides at 50 of the events. the company is providing $1.5 million worth of rides. each ride has a max cost of $15 which amounts to 100,000 rides. any available ride coades will e

listed on lyft's homepage. for a heads-up about traffic and transit impacts where you live, go to abc7news.com. san mateo police need your help to find a man who wanted to buy a gun and shoot up a school. a customer reported it before 5:00 last night. officers arrived minutes later but could not find him. police say witnesses did not find his statements to be credible but they still want to identify and locate him. he is described as a transient and about 35 years old. tensions escalated late last night in sacramento when protesters pounded on a police car. people had marched peacefully earlier in the night to protest the fatal shooting by police of an unarmed black >> people chanted stephon

clark's name after police released body camera fvideo showing officers killing clark last weekend. >> we have to be the state that is going to make a stand and actually have police reform. >> former sacramento kings star cousins says he'll play for clark's funeral. we're getting a look inside an east bay high school that went on lockdown after a student was suspected of bringing a gun to campus. you can see students hiding down low yesterday afternoon in a picture shared on twitter. sky 7 flew over san lorenzo after the alameda county sheriff arrested a 15-year-old boy. deputies say he had a gun and they credit other students for alerting them. developing news out of contra costa county, three people are in the hospital after a car they were in went down an embankment. it happened around 11:45 last night in highway 4 near willow pass road. firefighters say a man who was driving with two female

passengers when the car crashed. two suffered major injuries. one is in critical condition. it's unclear why the car left the roadway. now to the fiery crash and explosion this week at travis air force base. the fbi revealed the identity of the bay area man who breached security gates and ignited explosives in his vehicle, but they don't know why he did it. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the details. >> reporter: cell phone void id captured the fiery scene wednesday. the driver was killed. >> now the question is why. why was he there? >> the fbi in sacramento now searching for a motive. the driver identified as 51-year-old hafiz kazi, a civilian with no connection to the base. what investigators found inside his suv was chilling. >> five propane tanks. there was a gym bag with personal effects, three phones, three plastic one-gallon gas

cans and several lighters. >> reporter: teddy lives not forfrom where hafiz kazi lives. >> he showed me a picture of some guy. >> a neighbor told us off camera kazi was an old friend who used his address to get a driver's license. he says kazi may have suffered with mental health issues but never talked about harming himself or others. >> the investigation that we're doing right now is trying to piece together his life, trying to piece together what led up to this event. >> reporter: the fbi says there is no known threat to the base or the fairfield community. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. two major injuries to two star players and it may alter the warriors postseason and the giants regular season. steph curry suffered an mcl sprain in his left knee after his teammate fell into it.

curry will have an mri today to determine how severe it is. and giants ace madison bumgarner will undergo surgery today to insert a pin in his fractured pi pinky. he was hit with a pitch in arizona yesterday. he said he knew right away it was broken. the pin could come out in four to six weeks. our sister network espn reports bumgarner will be sidelined six to eight weeks. the giants season opener is less than a week away. abc 7 news was outside at&t park yesterday as fans reacted to bumgarner's injury. >> really tarm. the season is about to start. i wonder how this is going to impact the team over the course of the next few days. i hope he gets better. so tragic. >> the season is just beginning and he's already out for the season or we don't know how long he's going to be out. that's real bummer.

the police officer who offered himself up in exchange for a hostage has died of his injuries. the officer's mother says she was not surprised by her son's courage. police say yesterday morning the gunman killed four people then was shot and killed by police. overnight a 17 year old was detained in connection with the investigation. police say he is a friend of the gunman. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. this morning south korea says its invitation for high level talks has been accepted by north korea. the talks are set to take place next thursday in the demilitarized zone. they are viewed as a primer for an april summit between north korean leader kim jong-un and south korea's president. it's been three years since muller kidnapped huskins. kidnak we have new details you'll only see on abc 7 news. >> reporter: for three years denise huskins says she was the

woman behind the blindfold. the woman the vallejo police department accused of making up her own abduction. >> i remember thinking this is a really bad nightmare. i don't like this. >> reporter: muller drugged huskins and quinn and then kidnapped her. >> he spoke with me a lot. shared with me that he had a difficult time in his life. i shared something that happened when i was younger hoping maybe that knowing that i've already been assaulted that he won't want to add to it but, you know -- >> he raped you? >> yeah. >> reporter: the chief deputy district attorney says muller's arrest warrant has been processed. it could take up to 60 days or longer for him to be extradited from prison where he's serving 40 years on federal kidnapping

charges. he'll also face robbery, burglary and false imprisonment charges. >> it's an interesting thought and a frightening one. a very frightening one. >> fears of a tesla battery explodes kept a busy freeway closed for six hours following a deadly crash in mountain view. abc 7 news was on u.s. 101 after a tesla model x bounced off the center divider and burst into flames yesterday. two other vehicles then hit the tesla. the tesla driver died after being rushed to a trauma center. tesla engineers worked with firefighters to make sure that the battery had stopped burning before a tow truck could move the car. in the competitive bay area housing market, money talks but one family says singing set them apart. their bid was 20,000 below the highest bidder yet they have a new home in berkeley. katie utehs shares their story.

protests were prevalent. 50 members from the division are in the bay area this weekend for several events. the parade starts at 11:00 this morning followed by a festival at noon in central park. good saturday morning to you. starting out with live doppler 7 where there's showers from the peninsula to the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. they've been weak and light and scattered about president as we go in closer, picture of rainbow. thank you for that, mike. looking at 280 skyline boulevard, a little wet. finally into the santa cruz mountains, boulder creek certainly damp for you this morning. and we are looking at snow continuing in the sierra nevada. temperatures are dropping a bit and squaw has a hold in the upper mountains because of those gusty winds. if you're planning on checking out the snow, you may have to wait because still some dicey conditions in the mountains with a winter weather advisory for

the west slopes. 2 to 5 inches of snow until 5:00 tomorrow. 10 inches near the crest. when you get into the mountains, we're looking at even more than that. 1 to 2 feet possible until tomorrow morning. so the next system coming in tonight and tomorrow is a cold one. it's going to add that dry powdery snow to the mountains, which is good because we had the rain on top of all of the snow last week and we're looking at anywhere from a couple of inches to about nine inches at kirkwood. 13 inches at donner. so bay area, 50 to 60 percent of normal for our rainfall. we are adding to the snow pack today. tomorrow morning showers, partly cloudy and a nice sunny day on monday. here's the way it looks right now. 47 in the city. 48 oakland. 49 in mountain view with 46 right here on the coast. there's fog in the north bay. here's the golden gate bridge where it's partly cloudy right now. 40 in santa rosa. 46 in concord.

livermore at 48. passing shower at sfo. wet weather out there. when we add in the next system, the atmosphere unstable so we could see a thunderstorm late today into tomorrow. scattered showers. the cold system dropping the snow levels locally. then not only does it get sunny, but we're going to see temperatures flirting with 80 degrees next week. so today and tomorrow 1 on the storm impact scale for scattered showers. low snow levels. isolated thunderstorm is possible. and as we track it throughout the day, you'll notice that we have a lot of clouds, a few breaks, and here comes the next system. by the afternoon, the late afternoon in the north bay, it sinks to the south. not a lot of moisture behind it. that's the cold air. that's where we could see a little bit more lift and maybe a thunderstorm. so rainfall amounts the system today and tomorrow we add them up and we're just looking at perhaps a couple hundredths to a tenth. not a whole lot. boy, does this tell the story in san jose. upper 50s and mid 60s and perhaps near 80 by the end of next week.

occurring today across the country. live in washington, serena marshall, abc 7 news. alexis? >> thank you. abc 7 news reporter david louie spoke to some students in the bay area about their plans. >> reporter: this is where from 10,000 to 30,000 people are expected to turn out for san jose's march. they have raised money by sell t-shirts and accepting online donations. a congresswoman will be one of a dozen speakers. >> we want each speaker to come and give us their take on the gun violence issue and make this event platform for those who have different ideas about how to go about it because we know this issue is divisive. >> reporter: with only a few hours ago, this 21-year-old student continues to work on his speech for the rally and march in san francisco. his goal is to capitalize on the momentum to change gun laws. >> this comes once in a lifetime. it will be -- it's of essence to

capitalize it at this moment and make sure everybody sees this. >> while much of the spotlight will be on washington where students and supporters are already arriving, the san francisco march is expected to draw 100,000. potential speakers competed by doing video auditions. >> a number of students from all across the bay area submitted videos and that's how we were able to choose. we'll be hearing from, as i said, age range 12 all of the way up to 21 years of age. >> reporter: both in san jose and san francisco, organizers have trained volunteers to handle security. they'll be called global ambassadors. still others will handle medical emergencies. about $40,000 has been raised to cover expenses in san jose. david louie, abc 7 news. in san jose, marchers will gather at 11:00 a.m. at city hall. at 11:30 they'll begin marching to arena green where there will be a rally. in san francisco, people will gather at 1:00 p.m. at civic
