live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> the sound of silence. a powerful silence as hundreds of thousands march across the country for change. survivor emma johnson silence ended 6:20 after she took the stage and that is the exact amount of time it took the gunman to kill 17 students and teachers. that shooting spak -- sparking one of the biggest youth protests and call for gun legislation tonight. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm deon limb. and new york, park land,

philadelphia, washington and some of the cities that participated in the march for our live this is afternoon. >> here in the bay area there were more than eight different demonstrations. you're looking at marchs in san francisco, oakland, san jose and santa rosa. >> we do have live team coverage for you tonight. we'll get to washington, d.c. in just a few minutes. but first let's begin with leslie brinkley. >> live along the embarcadero. leslie. >> reporter: well the march is winding down right now. just a few hundred folks left behind me from the thousands who marched here. doctors, emt, grand parents and teachers and so many students. >> we are the generation that has grown up with school shootings, but we are the generation that will stop them. >> reporter: inspirational sixth graders took the stage as did the mayor of san francisco. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: and senator dianne feinstein. >> will you march, will you register, will you see that

people vote. >> reporter: 17 and 18-year-olds from across the bay area lined up to register to vote. >> if all of us register to vote, we control the whole election. >> kids should not be afraid to go to movies or concerts or walk down their own street and they shouldn't be afraid of being shot in their schools. sflfrmg >> reporter: for older participants, a columbine survivor asked them to pull money out of gun corporations they might not be aware of. >> i'm a columbine who calls and donates and a couple -- columbine survivor that was involved in the company that makes ar-15 assault rifles. >> the crowd marches down market street, stretching from city hall to the ferry building. >> we want to be safe in schools. we want to be safe in our

community and we want to be p protected in >> reporter: on the march route i asked those who marched what it felt like. they said it felt inspiring. in san francisco, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard picks up the team coverage live in oakland. >> this is where hundreds marched today. cornell, we know this includes warriors head coach steve kerr. >> reporter: that march ended here at lake merit earlier today. oakland commit estimate more than 2,000 people took part. it was peaceful and marchers making their voice heard today. [ chanting ] >> thousands of people marched through downtown oakland calling for an end to gun violence. >> we have to care about each

other and i'm walking out here for everyone i know and i don't know. >> reporter: many carried signs. some spoke for themselves. >> we're trying to do our part. the kids are leading the way and we're right behind them. >> we want to get guns off the street. >> reporter: earlier there was a rally at the plaza. organized in part by students like libby from high school in alameda who say enough is enough. >> lawmakers have failed us in this whole scope and really we need them to take action but who will do it? us. the youth. >> we want to make schools safer for all. >> reporter: these alumni from parkland, seen at the last month's mass shooting, are proud of student survivors advocating for common sense gun laws. >> how can we make our community protected and move forward as a nation. >> reporter: congressman eric swalwell said he is fighting for tougher gun laws. >> i made the mistake in the

past of giving a false equivalence to the second amendment. there is no right more important than their right to live. >> reporter: amy from alameda just wants a safe place for her son will to learn. >> it breaks my heart that i'm sending my children to school and they have to be afraid. >> reporter: we spotted warriors coach steve kerr in the crowd and he declined to talk. others vowing to keep marching for the cause. in oakland, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> now in the meantime, today's march in our nation's capitol exceeded participation expectations. more than half a million people turned out for the rally against against violence. among those who marched were survivors from stone man douglas high. karen travis has this story. >> reporter: it was a call to action. >> welcome to the revolution. >> reporter: in the shadow of the u.s. capitol, students from stoneman douglas across the nation making a passionate plea for an end to gun violence. >> this is not a red versus blue issue. this is a morals issue.

>> reporter: the most powerful moment was silence. student emma gonzalez reading the names of classmates who were killed and then pausing to wait unt until 6:20 passed. the same amount of time as the massacre in her school. >> fight for your lives before it is someone else's job. >> reporter: the rally was a response to the parkland, florida, shooting, killing 14 students and two coaches and a teachers. and calls to end violence and protect kids in their communities. >> gun violence is more than just a chicago problem or a parkland problem, it is an american problem. >> reporter: the stories were personal and the messages political. >> to those politicians supported by the nra that allow the continues slaughter of our children and our future, say get your resumes ready. >> reporter: a rally cry to get young people to make their voices known at polls when they

are old enough to vote. >> we know that we have accept short years until we too have the right to vote. >> reporter: and hundreds of thousands of americans gathering in solidarity in their own cities an towns. >> many people here today and old said this was their first ever political rally. the question now is can this student-led movement keep up the moment um and have an impact in the mid-term elections and beyond? karen traverse. abc news, washington. martin luther king's granddaughter delivered a powerful message to the crowd in d.c. >> i have a dream that enough is enough. police in newark need your help to find more information about the shooting death of a man. officers found the victim along wells avenue after a call about shots fired just before 11:00 last night. he died at the scene. detectives believe the victim was targeted by his killer.

sky 7 flew over the scene when police searched the area for more clues after the sun came up this morning. sky 7 also flew above fremont while firefighters worked to rescue a farmer who fll into a well. they set up a pulley system to free him at mission boulevard. that man fell about 25 feet below the ground level. firefighters eventually freed the man around 11:30 this morning. he went to the helicoptospital cut on his head and hypothermia. the first ever flood fair to inform residents about the risks from climate change and rising sea levels. abc 7 news was at a park in san rafael cable neighborhood where children and adults both enjoyed interactive displays and exhibits. and they heard from experts trying to help communities adapt and reduce the risk of homes being flooded. >> how can we use creativity to improve your life now and address these larger changes

thousands of people renewed a 50-year-old tradition of honoring veterans in san mateo. we were on b. street for a parade honoring that part of operation eagles visit. in 1968 san mateo adopted the 101st airborne division at the height of the vietnam war. it was the only city to embrace a military unit. today folks showed appreciation for all members of america's military. >> i'm happy to see so many people out here to support these men and women who fight for our freedom every day. >> and abc 7 news reporter david louie was the master of ceremonies for the parade.

several members of the 101st airborne flew into the bay area from their home base. now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> and this evening a cool start to the weekend and now we're tracking another round of showers. about to swing through. live doppler 7 tracking the action. want to zoom in. around the hills of mt. hamilton, a couple of light showers but you notice the pink and white on your screen. that is where we're seeing a wintry precipitation in the form of snowflakes in our hilltops. but to the north. here is our next front entering the north bay. some light showers around cloverdale, approaching guerneville and the wider picture showing the ripple of energy off the coast. that is going to move through here over the next 24 hours and give us that next chance of some showers. look at this. tahoe, a live look. the flakes flying. we still are anticipating about half a foot more additional snowfall in the see arrow overnight. and back here at home.

it is chilly. well below temperatures for this time of the year. kind of stuck in the 50s right now. and that is where we'll hang out over the next couple of hours. the jackets are needed later on tonight and the umbrella. we'll track light showers. our coldest spot overnight will be dropping into the 30s. so it will be a chilly 12-hour period headed our way into sunday morning. the storm impact scale still a light system moving through tonight and through tomorrow. scattered light showers. an the chance of a dult of dust -- a dusting possible on the hilltops above 2,000 feet but the rainfall is minimal with this system. less than a quarter of an inch across the region. so hour by hour we go. future weather at 7:30 tonight and half -- have to allow for a light shower across the region. nothing widespread. by 11:30, a couple of light showers trying to dot the landscape. tomorrow morning the front at 6:00 and isolated showers and into the afternoon we can't completely rule out the chance

of a shower. not a washout. but if you have out door plans, don't change them but there may be a couple of drops. total rainfall very minimal the next 24 hours. less than a quarter of an inch across the entire region. highs on sunday sh in the 50s across the board. so it will be a cool finish to the weekend as well. we're tracking that snow in the sierra. winter weather advisory in affect until 9:00 tomorrow morning. two to five inches snow likely and up to nine inches possible in the highest peaks. slippery roads could reduce visibility. a pattern change, a big one will change later this week. warm air is about to take over. look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. sun and showers tomorrow. then it is nothing but sunshine. you see those warmer temperatures looking at this, by wednesday into thursday, spring warmth arrives and by friday our warme warmest spots are going into the 80s. so big pattern change in the next 48 hours. >> thanks, drew. you have new fans now. >> like you didn't have enough

successful. the bay area injury bug hit the giants opening day. bumgarner fractured the pinky finger on this throwing hand. he had surgery this morning in arizona adding three pins to stabilize. he's out four to six weeks before removing the pen and then he starts slthrowing. and sharks, the tank hosting calgary with an old friend in the house retiring from prohockey. the 37-year-old has the team record with 56 goals in a season, back in 2005 and 06 become the only one to wip the award for league top scorer. the chew chew train dropped today's puck. and after a career that lasted from 2002 to 2017. he's calling it quits. >> i got to bring my son out there and see -- i was playing here before he was born.
