francisco. >> we want to be safe in schools. we want to be safe in our communities. and we want to be protected in america. >> reporter: young emotional voices filled san francisco's streets today. their words matters as thousands listened. >> we are the generation that has grown up with school shootings, but we are the generation that will stop them. >> reporter: from sky 7 you can see the massive crowd in civic center plaza. the group then marched down market street to the ferry building, holding signs demanding safety in schools and change from lawmakers. >> hey hey, ho ho, the nra has got to go! >> reporter: and in downtown oakland police say 2,000 people ga gathered with the same passionate message. >> i'm here because i think it's insane that we should have to question our right to be safe in our school. >> reporter: a group of alumni from marjory stoneman douglas high school in florida, which was the scene of last month's deadly school shooting, also gathered to support the need for

gun reform. >> if it happened in parkland it means it can happen anyplace that has the opportunity. >> reporter: it's a possibility that strikes fear in bay area parents. >> as a mother it breaks my heart that i'm sending my children to school and they have to be afraid. >> reporter: politicians, city leaders, and even warriors head coach steve kerr came out for the rallies. there were no signs of any opposition groups. lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> rallies were also held in san jose, pacifica, and santa rosa. at many of the events students urged teenagers to speak out and register to vote. organizers say the mission is to demand congress consider an effective bill that addresses gun violence. now, we saw the same action today by young people in cities and states across the nation. abc news reporter karen travers has a look at how survivors of the parkland shooting joined others and made their demands known at capitol hill, where organizers say 800,000 people

gathered. >> reporter: in washington. and across the nation. hundreds of thousands of americans gathering to make a passionate plea for an end to gun violence. >> welcome to the revolution. >> students from stoneman douglas leading a rallying cry for action. >> we cannot keep america great if we cannot keep america safe. >> reporter: the most powerful moment was silence. stoneman douglas student emma gonzalez reading the names of her classmates who were killed last month and then pausing to wait until six minutes and 20 seconds passed from the moment she took to the stage. the same amount of time as the massacre in her school. >> fight for your lives before it's someone else's job. >> reporter: the rally was planned as a response to the parkland, florida shooting that killed 14 students, two coaches, and a teacher. >> we want to thank you -- >> reporter: the student speakers came from all over the country, different backgrounds, different experiences of gun

utah's state capitol in salt lake city. marchers say they also share the goal of protecting children and stopping violence in schools. >> teachers, administrators, and again, collegiate-level students should have the choice to carry a firearm responsibly to utilize as a tool to defend themselves as a last line of defense. we're not asking them to become rambo. >> at least one pro-gun rights group in utah claims it asked to join the march for our lives but it was excluded. some of the marchers openly carried both handguns and rifles, which is legal in utah. we gathered local resources to help parents, kids, and educators navigate some of the biggest challenges in our communities, including school safety. go to abc7 news.com/takeaction and click on better schools. together we can all help make bay area schools better. to new details now on an unusual rescue for crews in fremont. they haven't done anything like this before. the call, an elderly man trapped

inside a well filled with water. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs spoke are rescuers and the man they saved. >> reporter: sky 7 shows us a rare rescue under way. >> i've been with fremont fire for 24 years and this is my birs bona fide well rescue for sure. >> reporter: fremont battalion chief gary ashley's 24 years is a drop in the bucket considering the brick-lined well is more than 100 years old and the man trapped inside 92 years old. ernest silva tells me the floor gave way as he checked the well pump, dropping him some 26 feet to the water below. >> i was impressed with his physical strength and stamina to stay above water and tread water that long. >> reporter: driscoll road is a busy street and there are homes surrounding this one-acre plot, but to give you some perspective the pump house is behind that garden. so it's unlikely anybody would have heard him calling for help. >> luckily somebody was home and was sharp enough to recognize

that they hadn't heard from him in a while. >> reporter: silva was lake li in the cold water for a half an hour before getting help. a rescuer dropped in with a life jacket. >> this is the type of helmet we give him and the life preserver. >> reporter: they cut the roof off the pump house to lower a rope from the ladder truck. it took about an additional hour. then six firefighters hoisted him to safety. >> we used, you know, manpower to do it because you want to do it nice and slow to get him out in a vertical position. >> reporter: silva suffered a cut to his head and hypothermia but is already home from the hospital. he says the well waters his garden. vegetables he eats and shares. maybe the secret to strength and stamina at 92. in fremont, katie utehs, abc 7 news. a manhunt is on tonight for a killer after a man was shot to death in newark. officers fountain the victim along wells avenue after they got a call of shots fired just before 11:00 last night. detectives tell us they believe the victim was targeted by his

killer. sky 7 flew over the scene when police searched the area for more clues this morning. police need your help to arrest a serial bank robber who's been targeting chase bank branches in the east bay. investigators say this man you see here has robbed four branches in ten days. the robberies began march 10th when the chase branch in san pablo and mcdonald avenue in richmond was targeted. in the days that followed the suspect struck locations in emeryville, oakland and berkeley. fire ripped through two trailers being used by workers at a karn ral in the east bay. sky 7 was over these rvs when they caught fire today in the southland mall parking lot in hayward. the fire engulfed at least two rvs that were being used by staff at a traveling carnival that had set up shop in the lot. cause of the fire is not known. nobody was hurt. to the weather. we're getting? scattered showers out there right now. >> drew will let us know if we're in for a soggy sunday. >> yeah, parts of us are seeing those showers at this hour. we'll talk about how long this rain sticks around and what moves in behind this storm

dangerous and ignored the risks. abc news reporter matt gutman has this story. >> reporter: the water park billed as the world's tallest water slide and the former park executive now facing criminal charges in connection with the 2016 death of a 10-year-old boy. austin miles director of operations at the time of the accident charged with more than a dozen counts including involuntary manslaughter for having "knowledge that the rafts were still going airborne in the days before the verruckt's grand opening." court documents show more than a dozen people were injured on the ride before 10-year-old caleb schwab was thrown off a raft and decapitated. in an interview last year caleb's parents relived the moment they learned what happened. >> there was a gentleman who wouldn't allow me to come close enough to see what was going on. and he just kept saying no, trust me, you don't want to go any further. >> reporter: schlitterbahn in a

at one of the iconic structures dotting san francisco's skyline, coit tower. the tower's brightest lights dimmed when the clock struck 8:30. and abc 7 news was at san francisco city hall, which was lit up by orange lights to support today's anti-gun violence marches. city hall also went dark to support earth hour. >> and probably had a little rain there. scattered showers, excuse me, tonight. >> some of us are seeing rain right now. some of the showers may be sticking around but it won't be anything widespread. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you the focus of the moisture is really the southern half of the bay area. we'll zoom in a little closer, get you right down to street level. live doppler 7, hearing some drops on your windows from palo alto into sunnyvale, santa clara south into cupertino. much of this is very light shower activity that we're track on live doppler 7. from union city to fremont over to sunol, pleasanton, dublin, even as you move east toward livermore light showers.

then tire line is sinking to the south and to the east. so in a couple of minutes san jose likely going to see some light rain working through their neighborhoods and even toward edenvale in the next hour or so. but it's been such a chilly day today that it's a cold night on the way tonight. look at this. already in the north bay we're in the 30s. a lot of 40s on the board. the mild spot right now so to speak is mountainview san jose coming in at 50 degrees. it's 48 in san francisco and in oakland. here's a call from accuweather. over the next 12 hours our coldest spots tonight will drop well into the 30s. it will be a chilly night on the way. and we have to allow for the scatters showers to work through the bay area. on the storm impact scale tonight and into sunday morning it's a level 1. it's a light system we have overhead right now. light scattered showers. there is the chance for this cold storm system to see a dusting of snow on our hilltops likely above 2,000 feet but the big takeaway less than a tenth of an inch of rainfall with this storm system. future weather will get you into sunday morning early. 5:00 in the morning.

killed him. police say the gunman was loyal to isis. british investigators are going through evidence seized from the london offices of cambridge analytica. the firm that's accused of improperly obtaining data from 50 million facebook users to manipulate legitimacies. britain's election regulator received a warrant yoefrnt to carry out a raid at the offices. investigators spent seven hours there, leaving with boxes of evidence. the company is under investigation in the uk and the u.s. both cambridge analytica and facebook deny wrongdoing. new details from facebook. officials believe toxic gas killed a couple and their two children at a resort. family and friends first became suspicious when the sharp family didn't return home as scheduled to iowa and they filed a missing persons report. mexican police found their bodies during a welfare check inside the condo they rented in quintana roo. the police chief in their town spoke about the tragedy. >> we're a small community.
