>> he told me he thinks the white house is operating like a smooth machine, his words. >> reporter: trump's friend spoke with with the president. >> he said he's expecting to make one or two major changes to his government very soon. other white house sources, not the president, tell me the veteran affairs secretary is likely to depart the cabinet very soon. >> reporter: a holdover from the obama administration has been under fire for lavish travel under the taxpayers dime. others that are on thin ice with the president are, for the moment, safe. among them, hud secretary ben carson and chief of staff john kelly. meanwhile, former campaign manager cory lewandowski insists if trump does fire kelly, he might not replace him. >> john f. kennedy didn't have a chief of staff his entire

presidency. the difference with this president is he is the decision maker and he loves to have all the information brought to him. >> reporter: the president is shaking up his legal teem, too, despite tweeting many lawyers and top firms want to represent me in the russia case don't believe the fake news narrative. the lead in the russia probe resigned. days later, it turns out the two lawyers expected to replace him won't be there citing conflict with other clients. the legal shake up comes at a potentially significant moment as trump considers whether to testify before the special counsel. david wright, abc news, washington. turning to stormy daniels. the adult film star is offering new details about an alleged one-night stand she had with president trump. >> she says when she met trump

that money. he sent a cease and desist letter, denying he had anything to do with threatening her. and daniels is making it clear to was entirely consensual. >> they're trying to, oh, she comes out, #metoo. this is not a me too. i was not victim. i've never said i was a victim. i think trying to use me to further someone else's agenda does horrible damage to people who are true victims. >> the affair happened years ago, before donald trump was president. daniels says she's speaking out now because it's important to defend herself. >> she told anderson cooper, she is not okay being called a liar. >> so far he's made no direct comments on this. >> his friend revealed some of the thoughts the president has shared with him. >> i cann't tell you everything he's thinking, only what he told me. he thought that much of the stormy daniels stuff was a

political hoax. again those were his words. >> daniels signed a nondisclosure agreement days before the 2016 presidential election. the president's lawyers claim she broke the deal more than 20 times. daniel's attorney says the agreement isn't valid because trump, himself, never signed it. many of the students who participated in the march for our lives will be back in school this morning, among them the kids from stoneman doug last high school in florida who will get back to class amid new security measures. emma gonzalez addressed the cloud in d.c. take a listen. >> 6:20 with with an ar-15 and my friend carmen would never complain to me about piano practice. aaron feiss would never call keira ms. sunshine, jaime guttenberg would never. amy pollak would never.

complicated when the lawyer has a lawyer. >> a lot of people are asking why is this important? it seems like it happened more than ten years ago, before the president was the president. why are so many people talking about this? it's about the $130,000 payment to stormy daniels. there are questions about, was it used, did it break a finance law or campaign finance laws. something that's possible being looked into. that's the reason. so many people say why is this so important? >> people will be looking into it. moving on, the trump administration is bracing for more high profile staffers. >> chief of staff secretary john kelly and ben carson are expected to stay on the job. the embattled head of the veterans affair could be ousted this week as he faces allegations of spending abuses, according to one of president trump's close friends who spoke of the impending shake up. >> he told me he thinks the white house is operating like a smooth machine, his words. he did say he's expecting to

make one or two major changes to his government, very soon. other white house sources, not the president, telling me the veterans affair secretary is likely to depart the cabinet very soon. >> meanwhile, two lawyers expected to join the legal team defending the president in the russia investigation will not be at it after all. one of trump's attorney's cited conflicts as the reason for the change of plans. >> ryan costello will not seek re-election in november. one of the reasons he won't defend his seat is pennsylvania's new congressional map made his district more democratic. he is among three dozen republican house members not seeking re-election. the fbi is assisting in a search for a murder suspect on the run for nearly a week. he slipped away last monday during a visit to a colorado hospital and hasn't been seen since. abc's adrian bankert has more.

>> reporter: right now, the nationwide manhunt for an escaped inmate wanted for attempted murder. >> the community is not safe with him out there. >> reporter: he was in custody at this denver hospital, but somehow got away from deputies. witnesses say he took off on foot. a massive search for several hours, but no luck. then this scene, unfolding in nearby aurora later that night. this suv riddled with bullet holes. the result of a high speed chase and deadly shootout with these two men, who police say are believed to be associates of gonzalez. he's been on the run now for nearly a week. it's not his first time evading authorities. in september, he allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend and her 1-year-old child, at gunpoint. >> a dangerous individual, our top priority. >> reporter: he was expected in court before his escape. there's now a $10,000 reward for his capture. adrian bankert, abc news, new york.

the bodies of an iowa family are expected in the u.s. wednesday after their bizarre death on vacation in mexico due to asphyxiation. they passed away after inhaling toxic gases in a condo at a resort. the type of gas is being investigated. family members are planning a single funeral for all four. a new storm system is making its way into the central u.s. as many are digging out from last week's snowfall. it will take shape overnight and expected to cause problems into tomorrow. texas, oklahoma and louisiana are bracing for severe thunderstorms. there could be heavy flooding in the south, upper midwest and northern plains will see snow. meanwhile, it will feel like spring in the mid-atlantic states and new england. sam champion is tracking the latest. millions digging out across 11 states. up to 14 inches of snow in minnesota.
