ke illed a 21-year-old man last wednesday. last night his family saw the body camera footage for the first time. >> and the man's emotional family apologized. abc 7 reporter amy holyfield is live in san francisco. amy? >> reporter: hi, natasha. yeah, it was an emotional night. we want to warn everyone, that video is hard to see and listen to. we do have it. the uncle of the man who was killed wanted to tell everyone at the meeting that his nephew was a sweet kid, but the family is not upset with the police department for shooting him. in the body camera video, you can see the chaos inside that barbershop. officer s said that he stood up and shot first and that he fired nine rounds. officers returned fire, two officers did, they shot 26 rounds and shot eid 18 times. four people inside the barbershop on geneva avenue were hit in the cross fire. a relative of the 21-year-old

who was killed read a statement from the family. >> we understand the resulting consequences of jahad's actions and stand by the officers who made the decision to use lethal force. >> reporter: now take a look at this cell phone video from outside the barbershop. you can see an officer crawling on the ground, trying to get to safety. he was shot in the leg. some at the meeting, though, were critical of police, saying they were too careless with their shots with so many innocent bystanders in that barbershop. the police chief says he doesn't know which bullets hit who. the district attorney is reviewing the case. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> that video is something else to watch. amy, thank you. mendocino county authorities pcontinue to investigate the death of two women and their six adopted children whose suv plummeted off of highway 1. authorities say they found no evidence the driver hit the brakes before going over the cliff.

the suv was found monday. the family appeared to be a happy one, but we're learning that neighbors called child protective services after -- excuse me, after their son complained of being hungry. neighbors say the boy told him their parents withheld food as punishment. a santa cruz correctional officer has been fired on his arrest on suspicion of sexually harassing a female inmate. officers took marco del real into custody on wednesday. the incident took place last july. >> del real's action is an embarrassment to our profession. and it sickens me that this happens or happened in one of our facilities. >> sheriff hart says he's ordered a full review of jail policies and procedures as well as ordered all jail officers to be outfitted with body-worn cameras. the sheriff will also increase the number of surveillance cameras inside of the jail. some new developments after

two teachers in the tamalpais high school district said they were harassed by their own students at school. the district is planning mandatory sexual harassment training for teachers, staff, and students starting next month. the training consists of 90-minute modules with video instructions and discussion. there are now two mir administrators, one male, one female, who will record and investigate sexual harassment complaints. president trump is threatening to hold up the trade agreement his administration finalized this week with south korea to gain more leverage for talks with north korea. the president made the remark during a speech in ohio yesterday on infrastructure. mr. trump said he wanted to make sure everyone in the trade deal is treated fairly. mr. trump's remarks come as. the two koreas have announced plans to hold bilateral meetings next month. meanwhile, the white house says russia's expulsion of 60 american diplomats was not unanticipated and that the u.s., quote, will deal with it. earlier this week, the u.s. expelled 60 russian diplomats as

punishment for moscow's alleged involvement in the poisoning of a former spy. the white house says the retaliation marks a further deterioration in the u.s./russia relationship. proposed change for jury selection in alameda county could mean longer travel distances for those called to serve. there's contention over the proposed change will increase or degrees diversity. >> reporter: alameda county residents are typically called to serve jury duty once a year. >> it's like, oh, boy, okay. i'm hoping to be local where i serve. >> reporter: now a proposed change could meanth they'll hav to travel farther on some cases. the alameda county court's executive committee is moving to a countywide jury pool for all case types, including misdemeanors and in all locations. the courts already operate on a county-wide jury pool for felony cases. >> the view of the bench is that your jury pool shouldn't depend on what type of case you have. it should be the same for everyone in the county.

>> reporter: court executive officer chad finky says he believes the move will lead to greater overall participation and people within the county being called to everybody less often, but public defender brendan woods strongly disagrees. >> the court is adding an extra layer of difficulty. >> reporter: wood says he believes the change will create a burden on people in lower socioeconomic classes by asking them to travel farther. >> it is going to make the jury panels mostly people who are afflue affluent, and i hate to say this, but people who are not people of color. >> given the diversity of our county, if every jury pool is a county-wide pool, i think they will be more diverse, not less. >> reporter: a public comment period is open until early may. >> some people may not just show up at all. they may just call in and say they're unavailable, reschedule, and never show up again. >> reporter: if the proposed change is accepted, it will go into effect july 1st. in alameda county, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. all right, it's 5:07.

"the examiner" reports mark farrell sent a letter saying he wants san francisco to be considered as host city. he said it would send a strong message to president trump. the last time the dnc was held here was 1984. happening today, the warriors will unveil a refurnish ished gymnasium and basketball court at the community center in san francisco. this is video of a previous court restored by the team. the community center court will b renamed edwin m. lee court in honor of the late mayor of san francisco who passed away in december. mayor lee and his wife got married at the chinatown community center in 1980. he was a lifetime supporter of the salvation army, as well. the dedication ceremony begins at 2:30 this afternoon. new homes at alameda point

may be built and opened within the next three years. the developer told our media partner the east bay times that the groundbreaking will happen nxt month. . the entire project will include 800 housing units, eight acres of parks, and 600,000 square feet of retail space. it's expected to be completed in about 15 years. the first phase of the project includes 130 affordable housin units. well, plans for the first hotel in mission bay are a step closer to becoming a reality. san francisco mayor mark farrell and other city leaders broke ground on the project yesterday. the marriott soma mission bay hotel will have 17 stories, 250 rooms, conference spaces, also a rooftop lounge. developers say rooms will feature views of at&t park, twin peaks, and the bay. it's being built on channel street, right across the third street bridge from at&t and just about half a mile away from the warriors' new arena under construction. the hotel expected to open in 2020. apple addressing the iphone slowdown. there's a new setting available to iphone 6 and 7 users. space junk hurling back to earth.

of course, we'll keep you updated on that as we head through next week. now a live desk update from abc 7 mornings. >> tennessee authorities say this morning that police have shot and killed a man accused of killing an off-duty police officer in kentucky. and this is making national news. 34-year-old james decoursy was known to kentucky police and officers still do not know why he posed as a policeman and then pulled over officer phillip meacham, who was an off-duty officer, driving his own vehicle, nor why decoursy opened fire. kentucky police are exploring the possibility that meacham may have arrested decoursy at one earlier time. now, meacham worked for that department 13 years as a deputy. he leaves behind a wife and two children. very sad. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. new developments in an amber alert case that made headlines last year. a former teacher who ran off with a 15-year-old student is

changing his plea now to guilty. you may remember 51-year-old tad coupummins from tennessee. he was found with a student from california in april after a 39-day manhunt. cummings is accused of transporting a minor across state lines to engage in sexual conduct. he initially filed not guilty, but now he wants to make the change. a search is underway for a man who designed a waterslide who killed a boy in kansas. >> abc's diane ma sato has the details. >> the u.s. marshal service is on the hunt for john shuly, the designer of a water slide that prosecutors say killed a boy and injured 13 others. on march 21st, shuly, along with the verruckt water slide's owner was indicted for second-degree murder in connection with the 2016 death of 10-year-old caleb schwab. now sources tell abc news it's believed that schooly has fled the country and possibly the

continent. schooley was the lead designer of the ride, but has no engineering credentials relevant to amusement ride design or safety. >> they wanted it to be scary, but is it dangerous? >> when we were testing it, we were definitely in harm's way. >> reporter: and coming up at 7:00 a.m., we'll have more on the investigation. the liberal face of the u.s. ninth circuit court of appeals has passed away. judge steven reinhart was known as the liberal lion of the court. a court spokesman announced he died yesterday during a medical appointment in l.a. the 87-year-old judge was appointed by former president carter. he's best known for writing the ruling that overturned california's ban on same-sex marriage. a chinese space station that's expected to fall to earth on easter sunday highlights a growing concern over space junk. it's estimated that there's 29,000 pieces of the junk today. lockheed martin has just completed a radar station in the marshal islands called space fence, which is capable of tracking thousands of objects at a time. >> when the new objects are

head, southbound on golden gate bridge right now, approaching the toll plaza. and our drive times are looking great, too. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, you're in the green at 17 minutes. neithering lig ing -- no metering lights yet for the bay bridge commute. southbound 101 san francisco to sfo, i'm sure it's going to be busy with spring break at the airport, but only going to take you ten minutes to get there. >> thanks, alexis. iphone users can now decide if they want to turn off apple's default setting that slows down to preserve the battery life. yesterday, apple released its newest ios version for iphones and ipads. the new battery health settings are only offered for the iphone 6 and 7. apple came under fire after it was revealed the company had been slowing the performance of iphones with older batteries. tesla recalling 130,000 model-s vehicles for power steering issue. the company sent an e-mail to customers saying the issue affects cars built before april 2016. the model-s is the only model

here are stephen things you need to know today. number one, new police body camera video shows the chaos during a deadly officer-involved shooting at a san francisco barbershop last week. people who were caught in that cross fire are criticizing police actions. the family of the suspect who ended up dying from gunfire says that they are standing by the officer's actions. number two, the marin's ig reports that teachers and students will get mandatory sexual harassment training after two teachers say they were harassed by their students. number three from our live desk, loud noises were heard coming from the chevron refinery in richmond overnight. chevron says no need to worry or shelter in place. they say the noises many residents heard were, quote, a result of steam pressure relief. and number four, we'll make a run at record high temperatures again today, but notice over the weekend, it will be a little bit cooler, but still above average and very comfortable through the holiday. number five, president trump saying that he may hold up a trade deal with south korea. the reason?

and 60 at the coast at 7:00 but 70 to 74 at 7:00. let's keep the good news rolling. >> we do not have too much happening on the roads so far today, mike. here's a look at walnut creek, southbound 680, very light volume as you approach highway 24. the northbound side of traffic here, we did have a crash around treat boulevard. you can still see one vehicle off on the left shoulder. it seems like we had some damage done to that center divide. so caltrans crews will have to come check that out. southbound 680, southbound 4 to walnut creek, just six minutes. another 8 on westbound 4. and even the central valley looking good today. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, under half an hour, just 28 minutes. several sick passengers aboard a plane headed to san jose triggered a massive emergency response. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller live at mineta san jose airport with what happened there. matt? >> good morning, natasha and reggie. you've probably felt turbulence on a flight before, but have you ever felt anything like this?

>> it felt like you were on a little roller coaster for most of the flight. just up and down constantly. >> reporter: oh, boy, that's how one passenger described the delta flight from minneapolis last night. the hours of turbulence started a chain reaction of illness. the san jose fire department said two passengers vomited followed by five more. >> at one point, i mean, it was so -- she was kneeling down in an aisle and i found a bag and gave it to her. >> low-level oscillation just kind of back and forth the whole time. we got stuck in a sway and never really left it. >> reporter: the plane landed just before 7:30 last night. emergency crews were waiting. those who had been sick were told to stay in their seat while everyone else got off the plane. the fire department said ultimately, no one was taken to the hospital. reporting live at the san jose airport, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> sounds like a rough ride. matt, thank you. in the east bay, a dive team helped pull a submered car from a pond in fremont.

witnesses say they saw one person in the car when it plummeted into a car behind rancho arroyo park. this happened just before 7:00 last night. a witness saw a man swim away. police say he was the only person in the car. officials say he was driving recklessly just before that crash. more than a dozen people may need a new place to stay this morning after a fire at a san mateo apartment complex. it broke out on north delaware near state street around 10:00 last night. firefighters contained the fire to one of the units at the four-story apartment complex but unfortunately there is smoke and heat damage throughout the building. the fire chief says up to 20 people could end up being displaced. no one was hurt. developing news out of richmond where loud noises coming from the chevron refinery caused concerns overnight. one caller told us she heard 15 to 20 loud booms just after 11:00 p.m. and was seeing to flames flaring. they usually just have one flame. city leaders have assured people that things are fine.

5:33 now. happening today, a driver accused of mowing down five pedestrians before leaving the scene is scheduled to be arraigned. 33-year-old mark dennis is being charged with one count of murder, four counts of attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon. it happened wednesday in san francisco's dog patch neighborhood at 24th street and illinois. police say dennis got into a physical altercation with the five victims before driving on to the sidewalk and plowing into them. one of the men, 43-year-old alisio lopez later died at the hospital. police were able to quickly find dennis and arrest him. b.a.r.t. police are defending a move to make an officer involved in a deadly shooting eligible for a possible promotion. on monday, b.a.r.t. police say that officer joseph mateu could begin a training course to become a field training officer. mateu shot and killed tindle while responding to gunfire in oakland. t tindle's family says they are stunned that he would be

considered for a promotion given that an investigation is still ongoing. former raider and 49er aldon smith has until next thursday to appear in court or face arrest on a domestic violence case. smith failed to appear yesterday for arraignment over a march 3rd incident in san francisco. heaps accused of beating his girlfriend and biting her on the wrists. the judge put a bench warrant on hold after his lawyer said his client hadn't missed ed court d before. two coalition soldiers were killed and five were hurt in a roadside bombings in syria. we don't know if any of the victims are americans. >> this came after president trump made a surprise announcement that u.s. troops would be leaving the country. this comes just hours after the pentagon highlighted the need for u.s. troops to remain there for the immediate future. >> we're knocking the hell out of isis. we'll be coming out of syria like very soon. let the other people take care of it now. very soon. very soon, we're coming out. >> the u.s.-led coalition has made significant progress against isis, but the group has not been destroyed.

brother. >> we came for >> the union representing the police officers called the shooting justified. they claim clark took a, quote, shooting stance when officers confronted him. three wrongful death lawsuits have been filed by victims of the montecito mud slides. they're suing utility company southern california edison. the civil lawsuits allege that the company's failure to maintain electrical facilities caused the thomas fire to break out in december and that fire in turn created the conditions for the deadly mud slides in january. southern california edison won't comment on the lawsuits until the investigation into what caused the thomas fire is complete. well, cancer warning signs will soon be going up in coffee shops near you. a los angeles judge has ruled that coffee products sold in california must carry cancer warning labels, because a chemical compound produced in the roasting process may be a carcinog

the country has been found unfit for trial. a judge in chicago ordered marilyn hartman to a mental health facility yesterday. the 66-year-old was indicted for felony theft after flying from chicago's o'hare airport to london without a ticket. she was released, but arrested again for violating a court order to stay away from the airport. two doctors say she is psychologically ill and needs treatment. former "sex and the city" star cynthia nixon picking up support for her run for governor of new york from two of her cast mates. sarah jessica parker and kristen davis says they are behind nixon's effort to win the gubernatorial nomination from governor andrew cuomo. the 51-year-old nixon is known for being an education activist and close alliance with new york city mayor, bill de blasio. a recent poll shows nixon trailing cuomo, 66 to 19%. this weekend, you have a chance to experience sailing aboard a pair of tall ships as it was done for hundreds of years. the "hawaiian chief tan" and "lady washington" will be offering dock tours and sailing
