the facility. they could very easily have gotten so it's very important that anybody who leaves the building gets patted down and searched. not only the building gets cleared but the perimeter and streets are clear of people who are no longer considered suspects. early on you don't know how many suspects you have. you don't know where the suspects are. these situations are very rapidly unfolding in the eyes of the first responders. like i said earlier, there's a lot of panic not only on the part of the people evacuating from the building, but all the bystanders that are watching across the street. the walmart.com headquarters is there. these people are looking out of their windows wondering what's going on. why are there 15 police cars, fire trucks, people walking out of the building with their hands up. it's typical that the first respon responsers -- we've seen this in
3:01 pm
past school shootings and other mass shooting situations where you see the video, people coming out of the building even students from schools with their hands above their heads, with their hands up. that's because you have to accurately determine who the suspect is, who is not, who's armed, who's not, as things progress you get a better handle on the situation. >> dick, thank you very much. that's our engineer here at abc 7 who has a long history of working with emergency personnel. he knows so much about the radio communications, how these things work. how the law enforcement responds. one thing we often do is check out broadcastify.com, that is a repository of all the different
3:02 pm
archives, day by day, hour-by-hour, minute by minute. we will be combing those for this event. the "l.a. times" is quoting earlier radio traffic saying that before 1:00 we had reports, the chief said it was 12:48 when officers were first on the scene. one of the first calls from san mateo dispatch said shooter. another party said they spotted someone with a gun. suspect came from the back pad yo. that correlates with something we heard from one of our witnesses who had an employee who was there on the back patio, lunch patio. he heard shots, ducked into a bush. further the online radio traffic said address is 901 cherry avenue. that's google headquarters. we have a report of a sub wijec with a gun. seven or eight shots were fired from the youtube building. that's the first notice we got
3:03 pm
of this tragedy that unfolded today at youtube headquarters. >> as we look at this patio where you can see the dining tables and umbrellas, it's such a beautiful day no doubt at the lunch hour all the youtube employees, many of them were enjoying their lunch outside, enjoying the sun and camaraderie and discussions on the patio. which really made it possibly easier for the shooter to have access to people versus on a rainy day if they were all inside. we want to share more tweets sent by todd sherman, a product manager at youtube. this puts you through the mindset of going through something like that as it was first happening. look how he recounted it. we were sitting in a meeting and heard people running, we heard rumbling, the floor. first thing we thought was earth
3:04 pm
quas quake. after exiting the room, we didn't know what was going on. still running and not a drill. todd gave a descriptive picture. he said at that point every new person i saw was a potential shooter. someone else said the person shot out the back doors and then shot themselves. that would correlate what the police said, two victims at an adjacent business. todd said i looked down, saw blood drips on the floor and stairs, then here you go, kristin. >> police cruisers pull up. hopped out with rifles ready and i told them where the situation was as i headed down the street to meet up with a couple team members. finally his ordeal ended a few minutes later with him saying i'm in an uber on the way home.
3:05 pm
hope everyone is safe. >> the best news for his friends and family. imagine that sense of relief and heading home safe after going through something so dramatic. as you saw back a moment ago on that fact board, so all totaled, on this youtube shooting at the youtube headquarters in san bruno. four victims. the shooter, herself passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. three other victims who are now at sf general. we have a male who is in the worst condition, critical condition. he's 36 years old. we don't have more details on him. we have a female who is 32 years old in serious condition. another female, 27 in fair condition. so, you know, we could kind of imagine what the picture was. if it turns out to be what these other reports are, domestic situation, the shooter targets the male, and then fires some other random shots and some
3:06 pm
other people get injured. >> they got in the way. they were there. >> that's how it's looking. but at this point we are speculating. it's based on some fact, but we won't know the whole picture until we hear more word from law enforcement. >> at this point they're not confirming the relationship between the shooter, who was deceased and other people who were shot. i want to give folks background and history on youtube. it's been in san bruno since 2005, that's when the company was founded. dick was talking about the rapid growth of the company in the past 13 years. starts with one building, now it's several buildings in that area. the headquarters, the biggest building is where the shooting happened today. it's a video sharing website. it was so successful and viral that goingogle bought the compa for 1$1.6 billion in 2006. that was astronomical, only a
3:07 pm
year aftd foundier the founding company by three young guys. since then it was owned by google and then in recent years alphabet game the parent company which owns the two subsidiaries, google and youtube. google's mountain headquarters not affected today. they're working with law enforcement, coordinating the news, employees, and tweeting out if you have any business, any work in that area, it's over for the day. stay home, be far away, be safe until they sort this out. >> this is a live picture from sky 7 over the scene. the surface streets there are totally stopped as the police carry out their mission here, going room to room to roochl m methodical search to make sure no one else is there, no one
3:08 pm
else involved and making sure no one else is terribly scared, hiding under a closet, under a desk -- >> or wounded and hiding. >> and we saw earlier that the highway was blocked off. here you see the police there, all on the scene. all members of different law enforcement agencies. the san bruno police are involved. sheriffs department, atf on the scene. the fbi is assisting as well. >> you know, we also want to just share a few more tweets coming in with viewers. our producers can also look at nancy pelosi's tweet. we have tim cook in the meantime, the ceo of apple. from everyone at apple we send our sympathy and support to the team at youtube and google, especially the victims and their families. the tech community in silicon valley is a close one. so there's tim cook reacting
3:09 pm
today to the tragic shooting at youtube this afternoon. >> i would like to bring back our engineer, dick epting. in this day and age we live in an open society. we are allowed to walk into buildings without getting patted down. the youtube employees that we talk ed ed to were reluctant tok about what sort of security is there. from what police are telling us, this gun woman was able to walk in from a patio open fire and some of those shots went from outside the building. my question to you, any idea of what the security is there at the youtube headquarters? do they really embrace that open concept? is this day and age affecting the idea of security at youtube? >> it's my belief that their buildings and their campus are
3:10 pm
card key access buildings. so they're not open to the public. and that patio area, which is just to the left of the frame that you're seeing from sky 7 now and above that driveway, this allegedly is where this incident took place, that patio area is also in a secure area. there's some locked gates that go up there. card key combination entry. i do not believe this was an open campus as far as the members of the general public. there's always a possibility, maybe somebody tailgated in behind an employee with a badge, or maybe this person had credentia credentials. you don't know. >> it's a reminder in this day and age you can't hold the door for the person behind you. you have to make sure you know who will be following you into the door, into work. so, have you heard any more from your colleagues in the emergency field? anything more from law enforcement about what went on
3:11 pm
today or what is under way right now? >> well, what they'll have to do, now that the building is in the process of being secured, it's my understanding that that's pretty much the case at this point, they'll have to process the facility as a crime scene. they'll have to try to duplicate the direction of travel and investigate as you were saying. just how did this person get into the building? they could have gone up just below my name there on the video you're seeing now, just above the garage there's a staircase that goes up to that patio, that staircase is also gated. if somebody really wanted to get back there, they could probably scale the fence if they were athletic and get back there. they have a number of private events back there. in the summer, concerts and whatnot. it's not open to the public. it should be a secure campus from that standpoint.
3:12 pm
these are all the things that will be evaluated now not only by the google and youtube security staff, but also by the local authorities, the federal authorities who are now going to come in, atf, fbi, all the federal agencies that will be participating in the investigation now. as these things always do, we'll have an impact on google's security, youtube's security going forward and they'll probably fortify areas that they reassess and think could possibly be weak points in their security. >> of course. to your point, we had zoomed in there with our helicopter, sky 7 overhead there. we had zoomed in to that door that is right next to the patio where the gunwoman may have gone in. that is a tall wall there. that would not be very easy to climb up that wall. you can see some people standing by that door. looks as though it is a pass key
3:13 pm
door. so, yes, there were -- there was security in place. it looks as though somehow the gun woman got in, found her target, opened fire and then killed herself. >> i can tell you for certain that members of the public can't get in through that door because i've been in that very spot at that door with my family as they use a very famous smart-phone based game that requires going out and hunting in various locations, there is a gym for that game inside the youtube property that you have to get close to to access that gym and play the game. that gate is as far as you can get to getting within a reasonable distance of where that fictitious jim is located. >> thank you very much. now this incident at the youtube headquarters in san bruin no is
3:14 pm
getting reaction from around the country including the president trump. >> president trump speaking out about it. he was just briefed on the shooting. our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. thank you to our phenomenal law enforcement officers and first responders that are currently on the scene. nancy pelosi of san francisco also tweeted not long ago, she says my staff and i are closely following developments from the active shooter situation at youtube headquarters in san bruno, california. thank you to our heroic first responders. our bay area community and all american communities deserve real action to end gun violence. gun violence has been in the news quite a bit lately with student marches and protests. so no doubt this situation with the shooting at the youtube headquarters in san bruno today
3:15 pm
will add more fuel for the fire in the debate over gun violence and what to do about it, which is a hot political button in the u.s. >> absolutely. you talk about what might be the motivations to this. we live in very dangerous times with the threat of terrorism all the time. it is -- in a sense, you can talk about this with the reporta domestic situation. this could be an old motive. this is the type of thing people have done for decades, if this, in fact, turns out to be a domestic violence situation. this is not perhap assign of the more pressing times in terms of terrorism, but if it's that same old problem with domestic violence, it's a horrible thing, but it will totally bring up more discussion about gun rights, good restricting access to weapons, about background checks and the rest.
3:16 pm
>> we want to show you an article we found that gives you a glimpse inside the san bruno headquarters of youtube. you can see how gorgeous it is. there's lots of perks for employees. there's a full-length swimming pool, an olympic sized pool for the employees to work out in. i should say full-length lap pool. they have a putting green. you can see as we scroll down, that picture there is actually a bar where folks can actually -- it says flat screens on the wall which plays youtube trend play lists so folks can stay up to date at the site while away from work. it is state of the art, real modern in design. there are communal work spaces that encourage collaboration, real communal work style and couches that encourage comfortable discussions. and it just has that laid back
3:17 pm
mentality that so many silicon valley companies do. the flip side of that does make it possibly more of a target when you do have the outdoor patio seating, the real openness that these buildings are designed to generate. >> i see those pictures, i can't help but wonder how will those employees see those offices tomorrow? will they see that patio in a different light given what's happened there? just a scene setter for viewers here, as we go to 3:17 this afternoon. we expect another news conference from sf general. we heard early from brent andrew talking about the three patients that he has there at sf general, the male 36, critical condition. the female, 32 in serious, and the other female, 27, fair condition. the one fatality in this apparently, according to police, is the shooter. we do not know her identity.
3:18 pm
she was found in a room inside youtube headquarters with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. one of her victims was laying there as well. we could really just assess that it's probably that male that is at sf general now in critical condition. we will hear more coming up at that news conference at 3:30. once again, this started around 12:48 this afternoon. the first reports, the police on the scene rushing to reports of an active shooter. here we are. >> you know it's interesting, dan, if it does turn out to be domestic violence, we need to remember that this is -- with a twist that familiar theme with a twist in that the shooter in this case is a woman. we don't know the gender of the victim. there are two women and a man
3:19 pm
there. we don't know who her partner would have been, but men are also victims of physical violence and domestic violence. it is more common that it's women. in fact, studies show that 1 in 4 women will be the victim of a severe physical violence by a partner in their lifetime. but the number for men is also 1 in 7. we don't think of it as much but it does happen. if nothing else this situation may shine a light on the fact that what we don't talk about, men could also be the victims of domestic violence and either way, just like gun violence, it's a difficult subject but needs to be tackled in this country. >> we are still kind of sorting out where victims went an when. we heard earlier there are no patients at stanford. i see the "l.a. times" has just updated their reporting to say that -- quoting the spokeswoman for stanford saying they expect
3:20 pm
at least four patients from the shooting to be admitted. >> that's who we quoted earlier as well. they probably got the same older information from lisa. there was confusion on stanford's end as well. these situations change quickly. we continue to look at video of the moments when this first started to happen. folks first started to evacuate the building. this was the first wave that ran out with their hands above their heads before they were all searched thoroughly, taken to safer locations away from the building. this all happened at the youtube headquarters in san bruno. a woman believed to be the shooter has been found inside, believed to have been killed by her own self-inflicted gunshot wound. four others total with gunshot wounds have been transported to hospitals. we do understand that at sf general there is one man in
3:21 pm
critical and two women with lesser injuries. one in fair season, one in serious condition. >> as we piece this together, as we try to keep a tally of what's going on, it seems as though there were four victims total in this. so the shooter herself is considered a victim in this, even though her injury was self-inflicted. you have the one fatality, the gunwoman who apparently killed herself after firing on her target, and then firing other shots which hit other people. we're told by that police chief, ed barberini saying there were two victims at adjacent businesses. so many questions. my question at that point is were those peopled a adjacent businesses hit by gunfire that emanated from the youtube headquarters or did the shooter fire on the way in to youtube at this adjacent business.
3:22 pm
clearly there are other questions we need to work out here. hopefully sometime soon. we expect the news conference from sf general at 3:30. hopefully we'll hear something soon from ed barberini, the police chief from san bruno pd, or the sheriffs department or the atf. we don't know what sort of weapon was uyuused. >> we do not know. there's no specific word on the type of firearm used. we know it was a firearm and the woman died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. we were talking about the card key entry at such a building. there has been no word yet as to how this womt gan got on to the premises. we're waiting for more clarification from that. >> we did hear from the police chief, he gave us a play by play of how the officers responded, there was one victim with a gunshot wound at the front.
3:23 pm
as the officers went in, they found the shooter in another room at youtube headquarters dead from that self-inflicted gunshot wound. a victim there on the floor as well. victims then alsoed ed at two adjacent buildings. and the woman was inside youtube headquarters. we're getting a hazy picture of what happened. as the day wears on we should get a clearer picture. that's the patio there where we believe this all started. it finished inside the building. of course you saw so many pictures of the dozens upon dozens of youtube employees who were escorted out, hands up, patted down, processed, making sure they were not part of this. that they were not involved in any way.
3:24 pm
they were patted down, checked for weapons, and now as you can see this is a live picture from sky 7. officers are just giving everything a once-over. one more time checking to make sure there's no one left behind. sometimes in these scenes you see people just so fterrified a what happened, and rightfully so. now they're going through a room by room check just to make sure things are clear. >> we got a lot of great information from the news conference that ed barberin irk held. for viewers just joining us now an learning about the youtube shooting, let's replay that news conference back for you. >> my name is ed barberini with the san bruno police department. i would like to give you a quick briefing and timeline of what we know now. if you will bear with me,
3:25 pm
information is coming in. it's a fluid situation. we're doing the best we can to keep everybody up to date. at 12:46 p.m. this afternoon, san bruno police department received numerous 911 calls regarding gunshots at the youtube campus located on cherry avenue. san bruno police arrived on scene at 12:48, and immediately began search for a possible shooter or suspect. upon arrival people were fleeing from the building. there was one victim with a gunshot wound towards the front of the business. several minutes later officers located a second individual with a gunshot wound that may be self-inflicted. two additional workers were located several minutes later at an adjacent business.
3:26 pm
the extent of the injuries of our victims are unknown right now. they were all transported for emergency medical care. they're all unknown. we have four victims who have all been transported for gunshot related injuries. and we have one subject who is deceased inside the building with a self-inflicted wound. at that time we believe that to be the shooter but we're following up on that. multiple law enforcement agencies responded to assist. we're grateful for everyone's help and assistance. we could not have accomplished this without everyone's help. this is an active event and active investigation. numerous law enforcement personnel are still going through the business. we conducted a quick, immediate search of the premises when the
3:27 pm
first officers arrived. now we're going through with a slow, methodical search to cover aurl our ba all our bases. that's all we have right now. i cannot give you the time of the next press update. [inaudible question] >> this is sf general. >> i want to give you -- thank you very much. thank you, doctor. i want to give you the conditions of the patients we have received from the incident at youtube headquarters in san bruno. we received a total of three
3:28 pm
patients, we do not expect additional patients from this incident. we have two females, one male. the females are ages 32. that patient is in serious condition. we have a 27-year-old female in fair condition. and we have a 36-year-old male who is in critical condition. we do not expect additional patients from this incident. i will give you further updates tonight if there are significant updates to be given, if not i'll give a full update tomorrow morning. the san bruno police department in partnership with youtube are setting up a family reunification center. you can contact the san bruno police department for
3:29 pm
information on that. i would like to introduce dr. andre campbell who has been trauma surgeon here at zuckerberg san francisco general for many years. he's going to discuss with you the types of injuries we've seen, and the effects of those injuries. >> good afternoon. my name is dr. andre campbell. i'm a trauma surgeon here at the zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. once again, we are confronted with the specter of mass casualty situation here in the city and county of san francisco where we now have had three victims who have come in that we've taken care of. this is unfortunate and it continues. you would think after we've seen las vegas, parkland, the pulse nightclub shooting, that we would see an end to this.
3:30 pm
but we have not. but i'll just say a couple things. san francisco general hospital, zuckerberg san francisco general hospital is the only level one trauma center in san francisco. it means we receive all the victims who get injured. these victims came from just south of san francisco, which is part of our catchment area, but we stand ready 24/7 to care for anyone injured whether it's fun shot wounds, from falls, car sdep accidents, bikes, all the other things we do regularly. we're activated. when we get activated here, when you have a mass casualty situation, all the doctors and nurses, the therapists come down to the emergency room. we do an assessment and triage working with everyone. we're able to deal with all the patients we had. we are able to diagnose problems, treat them and make sure they get appropriate care. i can't tell you all the specific
