a collapsed airplane hanger in houston. the services now under way marking 50 years since mlk's assassination. today the nation reflects. we do say good morning. we'll start with breaking news. a shooting at youtube headquarters. police identified the shooter and now hearing from her family. >> they say she was an animal rights activist who freeingly posted videos and had become angry at youtube because of their new policies and took her own life after opening fire wounding three as hundreds of workers scrambled to evacuate the sprawling youtube campus with their hands in the air. >> abc's marci gonzalez has the new details on the investigation that we're learning overnight. she's at the scene in san brown know, california, just outside san francisco. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. the scene still blocked off as the fbi and police investigate. looking into whether this

shooting was a possible act of retaliation against the company. ♪ >> reporter: this is the woman police say opened fire unleashing chaos at youtube's headquarters tuesday afternoon. >> i heard like maybe 15, 17 shots. >> reporter: two women and a man shot. colleagues scrambling to stop the bleeding. >> gunshot wound. so i put a tourniquet on her. >> reporter: as others rushed out of the campus in san brown know, california, hands in the air as police and s.w.a.t. members moved in. >> active shooter, 901 cherry. >> reporter: the shooter killing herself identified as 39-year-old nasim aghdam. >> my name is nasim. >> reporter: seen on one of her multiple youtube pages with tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of page views. ♪ recent rants complaining that youtube took down some of her videos and slashed her ad

revenue. >> i'm being discriminated. i feel that on youtube and i'm not the only one. >> reporter: her brother asking that his face not be shown says the family grew concerned when she went missing from her grandmother's house in san diego and was found sleeping in her car here in northern california hours before the shooting. >> she had a problem with youtube. so i called the cop again and told him that she -- there is a reason she went all the way from san diego. >> reporter: police tell us they are still investigating the motive telling us that there is no evidence that the three people who were shot and are still hospitalized this morning were specifically targeted. kendis and diane. >> one of those persons who was shot is in critical condition this morning, marci, thank you. >> yep. the shooter was apparent liang bring at youtube for filtering her content. former fbi counterterrorism official and abc news contributor steve gomez says businesses have to be prepared for this because unfortunately it doesn't take much for someone to want to seek revenge. >> we all have to recognize no

matter what type of organization you work for it could be just a simple five-person business and if you think that there is some type of friction that could result in some type of workplace violence, you have to recognize that. security is an issue. you maybe have to have liaison with law enforcement or maybe talk to a private investigator. you just do your due diligence depending on the scale of the company to ensure that nobody ever gets hurt at your facility. >> and gomez reminds us that social media companies like youtube and facebook for that matter are at the center of controversial issues. for example, both recently cracked down on sales of firearms using their networks. we're following breaking news from houston where an airplane hangar collapsed on to several planes here the hobby airport. it happened as a storm moved through with winds reaching 60 miles per hour and reports that several pilots may have been trapped but in the last few moments firefighters confirmed that nobody was inside. now to a major development

in the russia probe. "the washington post" reports president trump is not a criminal target of the investigation at this point. sources say special counsel robert mueller recently shared that information with the president's lawyers but they say the president remains under investigation. telling the paper that mueller, quote, is preparing a report about the president's actions while in office and potential obstruction of justice. when asked about the story an attorney for the president said they do not discuss conversations they may have had with the special counsel. well, the president now wants the military, the military to secure the border with mexico as he pushes to build his long promised wall. the white house later clarified saying the president was referring to the national guard. but the announcement appeared to catch many officials by surprise. abc's arlette saenz has details from d.c. good morning to you. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning. president trump has been frustrated congress didn't approve full funding for his wall. now he is suggesting what may be his most aggressive step yet for securing the southern border.

president trump previewed a new tactic to secure the u.s./mexico border send in the military. >> we have very bad laws for our border. and we are going to be doing some things in speaking with general mattis we'll be doing things militarily until we can have a wall and proper security we're going to be guarding our border with the military. that's a big step. we really haven't done that before, certainly not very much before. >> reporter: at a press conference with the baltic leaders, the president was asked to clarify. >> we are preparing for the military to secure our border between mexico and the united states. we have a meeting on it in a little while with general mattis and everybody and i think that it's something we have to do. >> reporter: the announcement seemed to catch some of his advisers by surprise. multiple officials told abc news no specific proposals have been developed for using the military on the border. but later in the day, white house press secretary sarah sanders said the president was briefed by top officials

including defense secretary jim mattis about the administration's border strategy which includes mobilizing the national guard. it's not an unprecedented move. president bush in 2006 and president obama in 2010 sent thousands of national guard troops to assist in border operations. but the authority is limited. the military can't carry out domestic law enforcement duties like detaining immigrants crossing the border illegally without authorization from congress. mexican officials are asking the state department and department of homeland security to clarify the president's announcement. the mexican ambassador to the u.s. says we share the idea of having a secure border but we don't always agree on how to achieve that goal. kendis and diane. >> arlette saenz for us from d.c., thanks, arlette. today marks a somber day in u.s. history, now 50 years since the assassination of dr. martin luther king jr. dr. king's kids, children were among hundreds last night who filled the church in memphis

uncovered potential spy equipment in the nation's capital. unauthorized devices that simulate cell phone towers have been discovered in washington, d.c. the department of homeland security is publicly acknowledging their existence for the first time. abc's martha raddatz says the devices could be used by foreign spies or criminals to track individual phones and intercept calls. >> the so-called cell phone site simulators like the one you saw trick mobile devices into locking on to these rogue sites instead of the real cell towers, dhs has not identified who is behind this or where exactly the devices were placed. this remains a real mystery. dhs saying only they have observed anomalous activity. >> the fcc authorized use of the devices but only to federal, state and local law enforcement and they were first warned about them in november. the trade war between the u.s. and china is heating up this morning. just moments ago, china

announced tariffs on $50 billion in american products including planes, cars and soybeans in response to tariffs proposed yesterday by the white house on 1300 chinese products. those tariffs would affect goods in the air respace, technology, machinery and medical sectors. it's unclear when they will take effect. crash testing giving a popular suv a failing grade. the 2018 ford escape is getting the worst safety rate had gone it comes to passenger side crashes. the escape is ford's second biggest seller. the company has not commented on the results. okay, so overnight social media buzzing thanks to a long-lost commercial featuring meghan markle. it's from nine years ago. you see her there showing prince harry's fiancee in the snack aisle. markle decides to buy tostitos for a party she's hosting. she's now helping to plan another celebration. her wedding may 19th. >> will they have tostitos at the party. >> i doubt tostitos would be on

spoke yesterday about the u.s. commitment to defeating isis in syria. some breaking news back here at home about our troops. a u.s. marine helicopter crashed. the chopper went down in this remote part of southern california just north of the city of plaster. now, the marines say a super stall combron helicopter like this crashed during a training mission. the four crew members are presumed dead. an investigation is under way. epa administrator scott pruitt is blaming critics for fueling the controversy over his sweetheart rental deal. now new questions about a project approved by the epa and pruitt's spending at the agency. this morning, scott pruitt is pushing back calling washington toxic. in an interview with the washington examiner he said the controversy surrounding him come from opponents who will resort to anything to stop the trump agenda. white house lawyers are investigating pruitt's $50 a night rental agreement at this washington condo owned by the wife of an energy lobbyist. while pruitt was living there,

the epa greenlighted a pipeline project represented by that lobbyist and epa denies any link and insisted the rental agreement was consistent with ethics rules. >> no one working for the feghouli is supposed to get a special deal. that has ethics investigators throughout washington very interested in this scenario. >> administrator pruitt, do you have the president's support. >> was it a mistake to rent that apartment? >> reporter: pruitt now under fire for boosting the salaries of his top aides even after the white house refused to approve them. one aide was given a nearly $57,000 raise. according to "the washington post," pruitt relied on an obscure law to hire aides including two former lobbyists. the 1977 safe drinking water act allows the epa to hire up to 30 people without senate or white house approval in times of an emergency. in a call to pruitt an administration official says the president told him to keep

fighting but privately the president is said to be frustrated and when asked he would not say if he still has confidence in pruitt. >> scott pruitt, do you support him. >> i hope he is going to be -- >> he's delivering on the president's goals and pushed to roll back environmental regulations including auto emission standards. the federal government is warning americans about what's being called nightmare bacteria. the cdc says the organisms have been found in 27 states and antibiotics can't kill them. officials say a network of experts was developed last year to help identify the potentially deadly bacteria. but they want more doctors to take part. they say 23,000 americans die every year from bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics. a little bit of good news for those who shopped at toys "r" us. bed bath & beyond is now accepting their gift cards. however, they must have a balance of at least $20 and you won't be able to get full value for them.

what happened here yesterday. and during that shooting, all of the employees here, 200 employees were evacuated, hands over their heads. those looking to re-enter the campus to find loved ones were turned away. the response from law enforcement was swift. san bruno police arrived on the scene two minutes after the initial 911 calls. they alongside others and the s.w.a.t. team meticulously scoured the building room by room. we just spoke with the police chief from san bruno and he had something to say about what was found in her car. >> we haven't completed a thorough search of the vehicle. we don't know if anything is in there. that went to the crime lab for processing. it will be a slow process. if there is any type of letter or manifesto, we don't know. a, if there is one, and b if there is one, what it says. >> reporter: police say are still investigating the motive but say there's no evidence that the three people still hospitalized this
