good evening. and tonight we'll take you inside the life of the young woman accused of opening fire inside the offices of youtube. the bizarre videos she posted, her vendetta against the company and the warning from her family

to police. could this bloodshed have been prevented? here's abc's matt gutman. >> my name is nasim. >> at first glance nasim aghdam's videos don't seem too sinister. her bizarre antics racking up millions of views. dressing in co-tums, exercising. promoting veganism, dancing next to photos of fruit and farm animals. but authorities say the 39-year-old stormed into an employee patio at youtube headquarters in san bruno, california, shooting three employees before turning the gun on herself. >> upon arrival officers encountered numerous employees fleeing from the building. it was very chaotic, as you can imagine. >> there's a victim at the front of the building. >> a dramatic scene. this officer snapping up his rifle and bolting out of his

vehicle, a youtube employee using his key to let him into the complex. aghdam, who is of iranian descent, had multiple youtube pages. despite her apparent success online, in some videos she seemed to lash out at youtube. >> i'm being discriminated. people watch me. not good for big businesses. >> reporter: ranting that youtube had begun to censor her, limiting her viewers and, therefore, her livelihood. claiming she made 10 cents for over 300,000 views. >> my old videos that used to get many views have stopped getting views. >> reporter: police say it was apparently enough to launch aghdam on a suicide mission. she disappeared from home in san diego on saturday. her family issuing a missing persons report. and on the morning of the shooting, police in mountain view, california, find her sleeping in her car hundreds of miles away from home, but just

30 miles away from youtube's headquarters. police call the family telling them she was fine, but they didn't know she was packing a 9 millimeter gun and a vendetta against youtube. the family says it warned police about her anger towards the company. her brother, who spoke to our affiliate on the condition that we disguise his voice and do not show his face, said this. >> i googled mountain view. it was close to the youtube headquarters. so -- and she had a problem with youtube. so we called that cop again and told him that she might -- there's a reason she went all the way from san diego to that. i didn't know she had a gun. >> there was no information relayed to the officer whatsoever that there was any indication of violence. >> reporter: authorities say the shooting seemed to have been planned in advance. >> the suspect went to a local gun range yesterday morning prior to visiting youtube. >> reporter: youtube

headquarters turning into a scene of chaos as shots shattered the tranquility of the san francisco area campus. >> it was one after another, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: many were on lunch break. first call for help came in at 12:26 p.m. police tell us that aghdam made her way into that garage. apparently that gate was open. once inside she was able to make her way inside the actual youtube campus. right over there just beyond that wall with the vines is that patio where the shooting actually happened. >> active shooter at 901 cherry. >> i saw her. it was a woman. and she was firing her gun. >> reporter: just two minutes later first responders arrived. >> confirm she is the suspect? >> that's what we were told. >> reporter: inside those overturned the chairs amid those red umbrellas, heavily armed teams scouring the area in search of the alleged assailant inside. a flood of youtube employees streaming out towards safety. police evacuating hundreds, escorting them out with their

hands raised, patting others down. >> this is crazy. we're on lockdown. >> reporter: some still clutching tightly to their laptops. >> just confirming one shooter still outstanding. >> one of the witnesses came in, they identified a female in a white shirt. >> we didn't know what was going on. then we realized it was gunshots. >> unbelievable response time. two minutes from the word going out, possible shooter, to they're actually on the ground which means they had a patrol officer within two blocks or a block of the campus. >> reporter: many in the community jumping in to help. >> i just gave them water, gave them band-aids, gave them towels to wipe their blood. the one woman, she had the actual bullet stuck on her leather shoe. >> reporter: travis gantly and tim mccarthy were having lunch at carl's jr. across the street from youtube when it started. >> we looked out the window and see the whole building, people running out of the stairs.

we opened one of the side doors and told the people to get into the building. >> we kind of acted out of instinct and try to do what we can to help, just try to stop the bleeding and wait for paramedics to come. and just try to do what anybody else would do. >> reporter: of the three people wounded, two have been released from the hospital. the third remains in serious condition. >> there's actually no link or relationship we've identified between our suspect and anybody who was at the scene at the time of the incident. >> the fact that the shooter really did not spend a lot of time in the incident could indicate she thought through the beginning and the middle but not how it would end. >> reporter: today youtube issuing a statement saying yesterday's horrific act of violence was deeply shocking and disturbing to our youtube family. still, we are uplifted by the heroic acts we witnessed both from employees and the san bruno community especially the first responders. investigators today continued to comb for evidence at the san diego home where aghdam was

living. including removing a bag of clothing which a neighbor says she had thrown into a dumpster on monday saying it appeared that aghdam was throwing away clothes she'd worn in these videos just days before her rampage. is there any way this could have been prevented? >> we have several investigators that will be working for a long time on this case. i think it's premature to jump to conclusions to say that anything could have prevented this. >> reporter: outside the family home today the shooter's father simply saying he's sorry. >> i'm sorry. i can't believe it. >> reporter: also handing out a statement that read our family is in absolute shock and can't make sense of what has happened yesterday. although no words can describe our deep pain for this tragedy, our family would like to express their utmost regret and sorrow for what happened to innocent victims. today some youtube employees returned to work, although the company is saying it's encouraging those who have been traumatized to take all the time

national landscape. tonight, though, you will see him in living color, in candid moments as the nation marks the 50th anniversary of his assassination. here's abc's lindsey davis. >> reporter: it is the sound of a dream not yet forgotten. >> i have a dream today. >> reporter: martin luther king jr.'s iconic i have a dream speech still seared in the minds of so many. >> i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed. >> reporter: but perhaps even more than a dreamer, he is remembered today as a visionary, a tribute for the civil rights leader who was assassinated in memphis, tennessee, at just 39 years old. >> the reverend martin luther king, the leader of the nonviolent civil rights movement in the united states was assassinated in memphis tonight. >> reporter: 50 years later, the

same men who witnessed dr. king's assassination, remembered him at the site where he was killed, the lorraine motel, now the civil rights museum. one of many tributes held across the nation. the country honoring the legacy he left behind. >> that's not just keep talking about dr. king. let's start trying to live and fulfill the mission he was on. and as my brother would say, realize the dream. >> reporter: while king's work has long been celebrated publicly, the intimate moments of his private, personal life rarely seen until now. ♪ happy birthday >> reporter: those candid moments captured in the new hbo documentary "king in the wilderness." >> we know that you really don't need much. >> reporter: dr. clayton worked with king and was a close friend of the family. here she is celebrating what would ultimately be his last birthday.

>> reporter: his stance against the vietnam war sparked backlash even among his followers. >> he knew that his enemies often would not support his cause, but he expected his friends to support him. he really died, i think, with that broken heart feeling. >> reporter: those tough moments front and center in the documentary all leading up to the painful details of his death. clayton was with king's widow coretta scott king the day he died. >> she said to his staff, i don't want anybody to talk to my children. i want to do that myself. so i don't want them knowing anything except what i tell them. and so they had them sent to their rooms and waited for her. and so she asked me to stay with her. she said now i got to talk to the boys. will you go in the room with me? i said yes. she took me in the room, and she had almost a death grip on i had arm as she told the boys. she said later it was the hardest thing for her. >> reporter: the film's

director, peter conhart, said he thought it was important to have witnesses to history like clayton tell those difficult stories. >> people kind of think i have a dream marked the culmination of his career when, in fact, there were three very controversial years that followed. >> reporter: a perspective that would shine new light on how we viewed dr. king. >> i think king to this generation is either a granite statue or a cardboard figure, and we wanted to bring him to life. >> reporter: do you think that his message 50 years ago still resonates as much today, 2018? >> over the years, his belief in nonviolence was kind of yawned over. it's the patient, nonviolent approach that's radical. i mean, even just a week ago with king's granddaughter standing up and saying, enough is enough. it's being practiced and it's working.

>> i'm granddaughter of martin luther king and coretta scott king. >> reporter: 50 years later king's granddaughter following in his footsteps, reciting his famous words in the march for our lives in washington. electrifying the crowd. >> i have a dream that enough is enough. and that this could be a gun-free world, period. >> having children participate was one of his secret weapons for change. in effect, when yolanda stood up and said enough is enough. she then burst into this big smile of a little girl. it was king's smile. i saw king's face come right through her face. >> reporter: today in remembrance of dr. king, his granddaughter joined other boys and girls of every race just as her grandfather had envisioned. these teens marching 50 miles from mississippi to memphis.

>> this symbolizes how we've moved forward. >> reporter: three generations walking side by side. >> these guys will be able to say 50 years from now they were part of making history around dr. king's legacy. >> reporter: today's king's youngest daughters speaking out against shootings and police profiling as she told my colleague steve osunsami. >> america has to find a way to value life. when you look at the black men being gunned down by law enforcement officers, it's very troubling. >> reporter: at one point even melting a handgun at today's rally. >> i think people need to know that we can't just pause in this moment and honor a great man. we really have to consider embracing his mission. >> reporter: they say he provided us a blueprint, a vision and a dream, all outlined in their father's most recited speech, words that the king family say still mean just as much today.
