historically, the winter olympics is overwhelmingly white. this year's team is most diverse ever but still 92% white. the girls are headed to one of their last competitions of the season. the connecticut synchronized skating competition. >> i'm excited, a little nervous. i want to place. >> reporter: but being one of the only teams in the country that's exclusively for young women of color, they say their differences aren't always celebrated. >> it's unfortunate. but race isn't everything. another team came past us and they're like don't let them take your bag. we're like, we're not even by you. we don't want your bag. we have our bag. >> reporter: the founder of figure skating harlem says 100% of her students pursue higher education. that's the goal. >> our big wins are when our students go on to gorgetown, howard. >> reporter: she was once a figure stater herself with

dreams. she always felt the sport she loved was missing something. >> the pallet doesn't look a whole lot different than it did when i skated. >> reporter: teaching girls in east harlem to skate. in 1997, she created a formal arguization funded partially through charitable organizations. they train on and off the ice taking classes in science, technology and leadership. how can ice skating be transformative for someone else's life. >> it's really hard to figure skate. it takes perseverance. >> reporter: what does ice skating bring to your life? >> ice skating definitely brings confidence in my life. i feel like this is where i'm supposed to be, like my home. >> reporter: back at the competition, girls are preparing to take the ice. they are here with three other fsh teams, some as young as 6 years old. they perform exuberantly. but fall short of their goal. they come in eighth place. >> a little nervous.

border wall is built. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> thank you, cecilia. an organizer of that caravan moving through mexico is disputing the president's claim of rampant cases of rape. he told abc news, there have been no instances of rape reported during the current trip. the white house says he wasn't talking about the caravan but about women and girls being victimized in general making the journey north. turning now to the escalating trade dispute, president trump is considering hitting china with an additional $100 billion in tariffs. the president asked the u.s. trade representative to determine if the move is appropriate. it's the latest noomove in a ba and forth uncolliding the u.s. imposing duties of $50 billion on china and china slapping it on soybeans, pork and whiskey. china is showing no signs of backing down. serious questions about the future of scott pruitt as the head of the epa.

two agency officials tell abc news pruitt supported a plan to give two of his most loyal aides big salary increases. that contradict's pruitt's claim in a fox news interview, which he said he only found out about the salary hikes earlier this week. "the new york times" reports at least five epa officials were reassigned or demoted after pushing back against the spending requests. those requests, which were not approved included a $100,000 a month private jet membership, a $70,000 for two desks in pruitt's office. and president trump seemed to back pruitt still. >> scott has done a fantastic job. i think he's a fantastic person. i just left coal and energy. they love scott pruitt. they feel very strongly about scott pruitt. they love scott pruitt.

>> trump has reportedly suggested a higher profile job for scott pruitt. cnn reports the president replacing jeff sessions with pruitt this week. the president denied that report saying pruitt is doing a great job where he is. police in georgia say a charter bus driver was under the influence of drugs when he swerved, hit a median and overturned. that bus was carrying 18 passengers to the master's golf tournament when it crashed. all of them had to climb out of windows and emergency exits to escape the wreckage. the accident backed up traffic on both sides of interstate 20 for hours. nearly all of the passengers were hospitalized with cuts, injuries and broken bones. and the search for a cdc worker missing for two months has come to a tragic end. his body was found on the bank of the chattahoochee river in atlanta. he was dressed in a jogging suit and medical examiner says there were no signs of foul play. >> right now the preliminary

cause of death is drowning. since the investigation is still open, we do not have a manner of death as whether it's an accident, suicide or anything other than that. >> he disappeared on february 12th after leaving work sick after learning he was passed over for a promotion. a former teacher who triggered the five-week nationwide manhunt while he was on the run with a 15-year-old student was found. he had originally pled not guilty but after what he reportedly calls personal reflection and running out of money for a private attorney, he's changed his plea. he faces up to ten years in federal prison as well as state kidnapping and sex crime charges. police outside los angeles have taken into custody a man who they say detonated a small bomb inside a sam's club store. it triggered an evacuation there. no one was hurt. the building in ontario suffered no structural damage.

he was holding what officers thought was a gun, but it turned out to be a metal pipe. here is linsey davis. >> reporter: this is the image of the shooting that has many up in arms after police fatally shot this man. police responded just before 5:00 p.m. wednesday. surveillance video shows him pointing a metal object towards this man's head and these two people, including a child, and shoving it into this man's chest. but it was at this moment that four of the responding officers opened fire, shooting the 34-year-old seven to nine times. >> the suspect then took a two-handed shooting stance and pointed an object at the approaching officers. >> reporter: turns out he was unarmed and mentally ill. what they thought was a gun was actually, this silver pipe. >> i'm angry with the police right now. i feel like i could kill them myself. >> reporter: the father of a teenage son and suffered from a
