and good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, april 8th. let's start with a quick look at the weather. >> morning, everyone. a very different start this morning. it's quiet out there. here's live doppler 7 and the satellite image. we are developing some clouds right now but it is looking pretty clear over san francisco from our exploratorium camera. we could see some patchy fog develop during the early morning hours. temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s. and then clearing skies but lunch time. it's going to be sunny this afternoon and bright and

temperatures a little bit warmer compared to yesterday so inland areas will hit the low 70s. around the bay, look for a very comfortable mid 60s. and at the coast it is still going to be cool with that onshore sea breeze so a high of 58 to 60 degrees. still pleasant this evening and get ready for a warm-up, carolyn. i'll have tose hose details com up. developing news -- investigators are piecing together what went wrong when a small plane crashed near the petaluma airport friday night. the pilot, retired apparently, was the person that was doing something. this is another story we've got developing news out of the south bay. police investigating a report of an early morning shooting that's left a man injure in san jose. it happened around 1:00 this morning on jerylin drive claudia drive.

people heard gunshots, then heard people yelling to call 911. the victim is in the hospital and his condition is unknown at this time. investigators are piecing together what went wrong when that small plane crashed near the petaluma airport on friday. the pilot, a retired marine, was killed. colleagues are saying good-bye to the respected member of california's civil air patrol. >> reporter: the first sonoma county deputy to search for the distressed plane described drenching rain and thick fog as the conditions friday night. >> emergency jets went up at 6:40. it is likely he took off just prior to that. >> reporter: now deputies guard the wreckage as the national transportation safety board is expected to arrive sunday. the emergency tranresponding pinged while the plane was still in the air so deputies started looking about a half-mile north of this location. that's why it took them a while to find the wresage. >> took us about 3 1/2 hours.

the plane is down in a mustard field and deputies spotted a small fire. >> reporter: deputies say the pilot likely died on impact. family identify him as 75-year-old carl morrison, a san diego resident whose legacy spans the state. >> he's an outstanding airmen and we'll all miss him. he'll be remembered for passing legislation in california that gets our members recognized by their employers for their time off. >> reporter: civil air members do search and rescue, moan tore young pilots, and aerospace education. >> if there was a free saturday and a cadet needed a ride, he was always out at the airport flying with them. >> reporter: the vietnam veteran retired from the united states marine corps after 20 years of service. he ran a private legal firm and was in petaluma consulting for the sonoma county water agency. >> he was instrument rated which meant he could fly when you can't see the ground. >> reporter: the ntsb will

investigate the cause of the crash. in petaluma, abc 7 news. new developments this morning about aldon smith, the reportedly raider linebacker is in jail -- again. according to tmz he viral laola condition of his bail. he was booked into jail a day after appearing in court for violating a restraining order in his domestic violence case. he was ordered to wear an ankle monitor. his bail set at $500,000. smith is due back in court wednesday afternoon. a man is under arrest and three people are hurt following a stabbing at the coliseum b.a.r.t. station in oakland. >> that 245 is a knife and it looks like a four to five-inch knife, male stabbing another male. >> i got a stab victim. lot of blood. >> police say it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon right

near the fair gates. two of the victims were taken to the hospital. their conditions are not known at this time. the third person's injuries were minor. the suspect's name hasn't been released. it's not clear exactly what led up to that stabbing. b.a.r.t. closed the station, as well as the connecter to oakland international airport for two hours. it re-opened at 5:00 p.m. just 30 minutes before the warriors game tipped off at oracle arena. in men sdocino county a been recovered floating in the surf. the sheriff's office is working on the identity. at this time they do know it is an african-american female, which means it could be 1 of the 2 missing girls from a crash. sheriff's officials say they'll need to use dna analysis to make a positive i.d. the crash happened two weeks ago just days after washington state authorities began investigating sara and jennifer hart for

possible child neglect. the couple's six adopted children were believed to be in that suv. five bodies were found. bodies of three other children were not immediately recovered. this morning we know the name of the woman found dead off grisly peak in the oakland hills. she's a 53-year-old woman from san pablo. her white toyota prius had gone over a 100-foot clif the crash is under investigation. she had been reported missing by her boyfriend earlier in the week. he was in hawaii and is cutting his vacation short to return to the bay area. the deluge of rain friday night into yesterday morning wreaked havoc on stenson beach. abc 7 takes us to a parking lot that now looks more like a river. >> reporter: the heavy rain friday night caused a small creek that normally runs through and underneath a parking lot to

flood. it washed away the structures around it that normally contain it. >> we just got so much rain within a short period of time. we got about eight inches of rain. >> and then this -- a waterfall is left behind from where the parking lot collapsed close to where it meets stinson beach. 40 parking spaces were washed out to sea. >> this is crazy. i'm always going boogie boarding down here at the beach. never seen this much water. that's all washed out. unbelievable. that's a huge, huge amount of water. i've never seen it like in and we didn't think we could get to the beach but we did. we found a way. >> reporter: official word from the golden gate national park service is that both stinson an mur woods are closed to the public because of the damage but here at stinson beach are dfinitely not steering clear of this face. >> we're going to have an adventure. we decided to have it no matter what. we had to cross the river in to the beach.

>> reporter: at nearby park side, the damage is adding up. the market and snack bar closed because of it but the cafe is still open. the last time water rushed in like this was 36 years ago. from stinson beach, abc 7 news. >> repair work after that storm will take several days. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has a look. >> reporter: the atmospheric river lived up to its name causing lots of water to rush downhill in mill valley. the ground so saturated it caused this 50-foot free to fall on to bigelow avenue. neighborhood heard the explosion when the tree hit power lines. >> having sort of experienced the north bay fires, we were quite alarmed. we called 911 to just mention that we had heard something. we thought we saw what could be a spark. >> reporter: pg and e crews eliminated dangerous live wires and worked to restore power to

the neighborhood. owner of the blue spruce reflected on the loss. >> lasted 100 years. no one got hurt. >> reporter: another tree fell this on to oak dale avenue. check it out, some branches now resting on this garage and across the street it narrowly missed damaging the garage right here. is there there are some risks being in sort of the more of a wilderness setting. >> reporter: in smonoma county this large sink hill has cut off the road in bodega. >> we got to get out -- my wife's pretty stuff. i got to take care of her. if something happens how am i going to get her out of here. >> reporter: this area looks more like a stretch. the storm left this stretch under water. the driver of this pick-up truck taking a chance and plowing through. yosemite valley will likely re-open at noon today following the merced river overflowing its

banks from rain water and melting snow. between two and four feet of water covered some roadways. visitors need to leave yosemite valley by 5:00 -- or they needed to, anyway, on friday night. >> we're going to be detracted by flooding, catastrophic or not. but we will be out by 5:00. >> parts of yosemite at higher elevations remain open. it is rare for rangers to close yosemite valley which is usually open around the clock to park visitors. so the question is -- is there more in terms of rain. >> not for a while. we can put the umbrellas away for a couple days. in fact, we're going to swing the opposite direction. we are headed for a big warm-up. lots of sunshine today. temperatures will be comfortable and mild, near average. but then tomorrow possibly even ten degrees warmer. i'll have details coming up. also ahead, the national hockey league is standing strong

homicide that's left a man dead in pleasant hill. it happened at 11:15 last night inside a home on norse near viking drive. the man was shot multiple times. police say it was related to a marijuana robbery. officers have not released any details about a suspect. an investigation continues this morning in new york city after a man died after being rescued from a burning high-rise apartment at trump tower. cell phone video captured the smoke and the flames rising from windows on the 50th floor of the midtown manhattan high-rise yesterday evening. more than 200 firefighters raced to the scene. four of them suffered minor injuries battling flames inside the burning apartment. >> it was extremely hot in the apartment. units pushing in are in great danger. the apartment they tell me was quite large.

>> arson investigators are now looking for what sparked that fire. no members of the first family were at trump tower at the time. trump tower includes luxury apartments, offices, and a shopping center. you're looking at what happened after an suv sheered off a fire hydrant in santa cruz yesterday morning. that jeep ended up on one side leaning against a power pole. santa cruz firefighters tell us the driver is okay after they spent about ten minutes freeing him from his suv. pg&e should off power in the nearby area so a tow truck crew could remove the jeep and part of so cal avenue remained closed for clean-up after the crash. canada is in mourning this morning after at least 15 people died, 14 others were injured, when a bus carrying a junior hockey team crashed. that team was on its way to a playoff game when the bus collided with a truck.

abc news reporter ron claiborne has details on the driver of that truck. >> reporter: the horrific scene. a bus ripped open, wreckage spilled on to a rural highway, this after the bus with the canadian junior hockey league humboldt team onboard t-boned by a tractor-trailer truck >> the nightmare has happened. >> 14 others on the bus were injured. the father of one tweeting this heartwrenching photo of injured players holding hands. >> we will never forget the members of our broncos family who were taken from us and who are injured. >> reporter: the broncos, whose players range in age from the teens to 20, were on their way to a semi-final junior league hockey game. in a statement canada's prime minister justin trudeau saying an entire country is in shock and mourning.

this is every parent's nightmare. canadian police say the driver of that tractor-trailer truck was not injured in the accident. he was initially detained by authorities for questioning but has since been released and is said to be undergoing psychological counseling. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. >> that crash has hit close to home for many nhl teams. before last night's game at s.a.p. center the sharks held a moment of silence for the victims. it was a similar scene before every game played yesterday in the nhl. the sharks head coach says taking the bus is a way of life for those who want to make it to the professional ranks. >> anybody that's got to this level has been on those buses at different points. and so it really hits close to home on a lot of different fronts. >> he has two sons playing hockey right now and he says much like the junior hockey league players, they, too, ride the bus.

an elderly couple married for 75 years died together in the north bay wildfires. the only thing to survive -- the bills that just kept on coming. a special "7 on your side" tonight at 11:00. good morning. check out what a different picture we have on live doppler 7. no rain out there. just some clouds right now through parts of the north bay and we also have some clouds in the east bay and south bay. here's a live shot of the golden gate bridge where the rock 'n' roll marathon will happen shortly this morning. we will see some runners out there. temperatures are cooler compared to yesterday morning with less cloud cover. san francisco's 52. oakland, 51. san jose, 51 degrees. gilroy at 46 degrees. right now we are looking at the san jose airport. there is some cloud cover in parts of the south bay and some

temperatures in the 40s as well through parts of the north bay like santa rosa. napa, 45. fairfield 47. concord at 52 and livermore at 49 degrees. this time we are looking out towards the bay bridge and notice the flags not blowing too much. there will be a little bit of a sea breeze picking up this afternoon. we are starting off with partly cloudy skies in the morning, lots of sunshine this afternoon. it is going to be much warmer tomorrow by up to ten degrees in some areas. then our next chance of rain, tuesday and wednesday. i'll tell you a little bit about that. here is the satellite radar image over the last 24 hours. that system that brought us the rain has moved east and we have high pressure building, and this is going to a i lou things to really warm up as it moves inland as well tomorrow. so highs today little bit warmer compared to yesterday. in the 60s for most everyone with some of our warmest locations hitting 70. so san francisco, 61. oakland, 65. san jose, 69. and we'll hit 70 topping out

fairfield. upper 60s through santa rosa and nap that with a few high clouds. overnight lows will be on the cool side, as well under mostly clear skies. temperatures will drop down into the 40s in parts of the north bay. some 50s and upper 40s around the bay. san francisco, 52. san mateo, 49 degrees, as well as san jose. now, here's what i was talking about. we're going to see a warm-up over the next seven days. we're going to go up and down. in san jose, we're right at average. tomorrow we'll jump up by ten degrees. then the next system of rain -- or chance of rain comes in tuesday and we have another one on wednesday. this cold front is really going to drop temperatures on thursday so notice from monday through thursday, we could be 20 degrees cooler by thursday. then we ramp things back up again. so this next chance of rain is

on tuesday. light showers. best chance of rain is afternoon and evening starting off in the north bay. less than a quarter of an inch of rainfall for most everybody. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast -- mostly sunny today, near 70 in inland areas but still cool at the coast. upper 50s to near 60 because of that onshore flow. and tomorrow's high pressure builds. a warm-up -- 80 inland. mid 70s around the bay. mid 60s at the coast. we could get that light shower tuesday. then another system wednesday night, possibly into thursday morning. but that one is going to be a cooler system so temperatures will tumble on thursday. >> a one-day heat wave. >> one-day warm-up. >> thank you. just ahead -- an unusual visitor on a roof. and that's the only surprising place goats ended up -- it's not the only one that they ended up in last week.

your taxes are due in just a few more days. some people are worried about money they owe. "7 on your side's" michael finney explains how to manage the bill. >> reporter: this is a hectic time for accountants allen rosen and michael schwartz and their staff in the thick of preparing more than 1,000 tax returns before april 17th. a lot of their clients owe money but can't pay it all at once. >> their reaction is usually panic, what do i do, i'm in trouble, help me. >> it is my job to tell them, okay, let's plan this out.

>> reporter: hands down, the most important thing, no matter how much you can or cannot pay is to file your tax return on time. >> reporter: if you don't, the internal revenue service will charge a penalty of 5% of what you owe per month, plus heavy interest on top of that. >> also important, when you owe money, is to face the problem head on. the irs has payment plans that may very well help you in your particular financial situation. >> reporter: the best is to pay as much as you can by the april deadline to minimize penalties and interest. now if you can pay the full bill within 120 days, you'll still pay penalties and interest on the balance but there's no irs fee to set up the plan. an installment plan is more expensive. you'll pay to set it up and it costs more in interest and penalties depending on the length of the payment term. and there's a six-year maximum on that. no matter what agreement you come to with the irs, cpa

welcome back, everyone. we're starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist. >> good morning, everyone. it is quiet on live doppler 7 but there is some cloud cover. you can see some clouds filling in along through the bay and east bay and south bay. live shot from exploratorium looking at the financial area, the trance america tower. here is how the day plays out with your 12-hour day planner. patchy fog could develop during the 7:00 hour. temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. clearing skies by lunch time and a sunny and bright afternoon for everyone with temperatures just a few degrees warmer compared to yesterday. inland areas will hit near 70

degrees around the bay. mid 60s and still cool at the coast with an onshore breeze, so upper 50s to near 60 degrees. a pleasant evening in store for us with some clear skies as well. get ready for a warm-up. i'll have details coming up. frances, thank you. the san francisco sheriff's office wants to expand the body camera program in city jails. according to "the examiner," the sheriff is looking for $40,000 to pay for 400 more of the devices, those cameras would go to deputies at each of the city's jails and to deputies who patrol zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. body cameras were given to 40 deputies back in august as part of a pilot program. that was the result of at least two alleged instances where deputies forced inmates to fight each other. three deputies face criminal charges in connection with those fights. turning now to the epa chief under increasing pressure. new details are coming to light about the growing tab for

taxpayers when it comes to scott pruitt's travel and security. abc news it white house correspondent tara palmieri has new numbers. >> reporter: new alarming numbers about how much embattled epa chief scott pruitt is costing taxpayers. documents show he spent $832,000 in the first quarter of his term on security costs. nearly double the amount spent by his two predecessors in the obama separation. at that pace it would add up to over $3 million in just over a year. the white house has not responded to the latest figures but the president is standing by pruitt tweeting he is under siege. >> trump world loves scott pruitt so you also have the huge base of the party that actually knows who the epa director is, which isn't normally the case. >> reporter: but there are growing calls on both sides of the aisle for him to resign. one democrat demanding answers on why pruitt requested security

24/7, including allegedly on personal trips to disneyland and the rose bowl. pruitt's team said they received an unprecedented number of threats, although there have been no arrests or charges. from any time that you do transformational things there are critics and people are are against you in that regard. >> reporter: this isn't the only allegation against pruitt. he's been accused of wasteful spending on first class and private flights installing a soundproof phone booth for $43,000 and approving steep pay raises for staffers, one add being $57,000. >> i found out about that yesterday and i changed it. >> who did it. >> there will be some accountability. >> a career person? >> i don't know. >> you don't know? >> i found out about this yesterday and i corrected the action. >> epa officials tell abc news that pruitt did know about the raises and supported them. tara palmieri, abc news, washington. coming up on "this week," senator liths weighs in on the

future of embattled epa administrator scott pruitt. the senator will also discuss the tariff proposals coming from the white house. watch the full interview on ""this week" with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 right here on abc 7. the first national guard troops are on their way to secure the u.s. border with mexico. this comes after a new effort that president trump announced last week. texas will send the first 250 troops. arizona plans to deploy another 150 guardsmen to the border some time next week. california and new mexico have not said whether they'll send any of their guard members to the borders with mexico. german police do not believe in islamic extremist group was behind yesterday's deadly van attack that killed two people. the driver shot himself to death after plowing into a crowd outside a popular bar in

muenster. that crash injured at least 20 people, six still in critical condition. investigators say the driver was a german citizen. they are trying to learn more about his background. >> when you throw in mental health possibilities, it still could be an extremist group like isis or al qaeda, but it also culd be a person who is just paranoid, delusional. >> witnesses tell police other people may have run from that van after it crashed into the crowd. police are trying to verify if that actually happened. next, it's what many people want to hear -- early retirement. a plan to make that happen. it's pay now to play later. >> reporter: husband and father jeremy jacobson is a 44-year-old retiree. >> our stress level is way down and our happiness is way up. >> the former microsoft engineer redefining the american dream. no house, no car, no debt. >> very simply, it does come

down to just how much you can save and what you're willing to delay in gratification. >> reporter: he says for a decade he and his wife dramatically scaled back their lifestyle, down sizing to a small apartment, growing their own produce and eating in, trading their car for two wheels. no savings too small making their own wine, soap, and jeremy even ditching his costly razor. >> we were saving around 70% of our income. >> reporter: the couple following the concept known as fire -- financial independent early retirement, a movement pioneered by this blogger. >> the more you get saved up, the less you need to protect yourself which means you are savings grow even faster. >> jeremy, his wife and their son, now traveling the world. >> our son turns 3 next week. he's been to 29 countries. how did we ever really have time for jobs. >> reporter: but is f.i.r.e. a fit for everyone.

the golf course is expected to open nearly three weeks after the original opening date. course was scheduled to open a week ago. crews were working to clean up significant tree damage left behind by the october wildfires, but because of the recent heavy rain and cold temperatures, officials were forced to push the opening day to april 20th. volunteers are needed for next saturday to help with the repairs. and the weather should be okay for them this week. right? a little bit of rain. >> yeah, there is a little bit of rain but it is actually going to get very cold again with the accuweather seven-day forecast. we're going up, we're going down. all the details are coming up. right now we have a beautiful start to our sunday morning. live from the east bay hills

anaheim against the ducks next week. final round of the masters under way. patrick reed and rory mcilroy in the final group. we'll have your winner tonight at 5:00 on abc 7. have a great day. good morning. i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan. live doppler 7 and the satellite image showing us fairly quiet conditions. just some partly cloudy skies over parts of the north bay and some clouds around the rest of the bay area down through the south bay. live shot of the golden gate bridge shows it is pretty clear out there. temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. san francisco 52. oakland 51, as well asell as this time over the san jose airport there are some clouds in the south bay. some cool numbers as well in the north bay like santa rosa and napa at 45. it is a bit cooler this morning as you head out the door and it is calm and quiet. you can see the water there underneath the bay bridge. we start off with a partly

cloudy morning but we'll see sunny skies this afternoon. a little bit warmer today but then much warmer tomorrow. we are coming up by about ten degrees in some areas. then the next chance of rain is tuesday, wednesday, into thursday. and things are going to really cool down as well. here is the satellite radar image. over the last 24 hours that area of low pressure has moved through, so has that rain. high pressure is building over the pacific. as this moves inland, that's going to allow things to warm up even more tomorrow. so highs today topping out near 70 degrees in some of the inland locations like fairfield, antioch at 70 degrees. look for upper 60s through santa rosa, 67 napa. 68 san francisco. san jose 69 degrees. half moon bay still a little bit cool at the coast, 60 degrees there. the onshore breeze will continue today, picking up at 10 to 20 miles this afternoon. overnight lows under mostly clear skies will be cooler as well. even the low 40s up towards

ukiah, mid 40s through santa rosa and napa. san francisco 52. here's abc 7 storm impact scale. so this next system that we are talking about coming in on tuesday is going to be light. very light showers. the best chance is in the afternoon and we're talking less than a quarter-inch of rainfall. maybe even less than that. i'll show you the forecast animation starting off tuesday morning. we'll be under cloudy skies but the rain up to our north. now the very light green shows light rain passing through the bay area. it is a quick-moving system. gone by tuesday evening. then the next chance of rain comes in wednesday night, into thursday. now this system also doesn't produce a ton of rain but what it does is it brings very cold air. notice the pink and the white? that means snow in the forecast. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. enjoy the beautiful mostly sunny day today, and then look at that warm-up for tomorrow. lots of sunshine.

we could be ten degrees above average in some inland areas, near 80 there. around the bay, comfortable and in the mid 70s. then at the coast, mid 60s. the light rain comes in, chance on tuesday, especially in the afternoon. then a break before wednesday night. some late showers that may linger into thursday, and it will be really chilly so i notice a 20-degree drop in temperatures inland from monday to thursday. >> i think -- what do you call it -- hookie day. thanks, frances. the massive effort to complete san francisco's central subway has just reached a major milestone. a handful of reporters toured the underground cave that's soon to become the chinatown central subway station. abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom has a look at what's taking shape. >> reporter: you see that orange box dangling from the top of a

and good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, april 8th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan in this morning for lisa argen. >> morning, everyone. a very quiet start. it's quiet out there. here's live doppler 7 and the satellite image. we are developing some clouds right now but it is looking pretty clear over san francisco from our exploratorium camera. it is going to be a gorgeous day ahead. we could see some patchy fog develop during the early morning hours. temperatures will be in the 40s and low 50s. but by lunch time, clearing skies and a sunny afternoon with milder temperatures, near 70 inland. around the bay, mid 60s. at the coast, still breezy with and onshore flow. upper 50s to near 60 degrees.
