and good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, april 8th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan in this morning for lisa argen. >> morning, everyone. a very quiet start. it's quiet out there. here's live doppler 7 and the satellite image. we are developing some clouds right now but it is looking pretty clear over san francisco from our exploratorium camera. it is going to be a gorgeous day ahead. we could see some patchy fog develop during the early morning hours. temperatures will be in the 40s and low 50s. but by lunch time, clearing skies and a sunny afternoon with milder temperatures, near 70 inland. around the bay, mid 60s. at the coast, still breezy with and onshore flow. upper 50s to near 60 degrees.

it will be pleasant as well this evening as temperatures cool down into the 50s. clear skies ahead and an even warmer day tomorrow. i'll tell you about that, as well as our next chance of rain coming up. thank you. breaking news out of contra costa county. police are investigating a shooting that's left a man dead in pleasant hill. it happened at 11:15 last night inside a home on norse drive near viking drive. police say the man was shot multiple times in connection with a marijuana robbery. officers have not released any details about a suspect. developing news out of the south bay. a man was injured in san jose during an early morning shooting on jerylin drive near claudia drive. neighborhoods say they heard at least seven gunshots, then saw a group of people yelling 911. the victim was taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

investigators are piecing together what went wrong when a small plane crashed near the petaluma airport friday night. the pilot, a retired marine, was killed. colleagues are now saying good-bye to the respected member of california's civil air patrol. >> reporter: the first sonoma county deputy to search for the distressed planedescribes drenching rain and thick fog as the conditions friday night. >> emergency jets went up at 6:40. it is likely he took off just prior to that. >> reporter: now deputies guard the wreckage as the national transportation safety board is expected to arrive sunday. the emergency transponder pinged while the plane was still in the air so deputies started looking a half-mile north of this location. that's why it took them a while to find the wreckage. >> took us about 3 1/2 hours. the plane is down in a mustard field and deputies spotted a small fire. >> reporter: deputies say the

pilot likely died on impact. family identify him as 75-year-old carl morrison, a san diego resident whose legacy spans the state. >> he's an outstanding airmen and we'll all miss him. >> he was influential. >> he'll be remembered for passing legislation in california that gets our members recognized by their employers for their time off. >> reporter: civil air members do search and rescue, moan tore mentor young pilots and aerospace education. >> if there was a free saturday and a cadet needed a ride, he was always out at the airport flying with them. >> reporter: the vietnam veteran retired from the united states marine corps after 20 years of service. he ran a private legal firm and was in petaluma consulting for the sonoma county water agency. >> he was instrument rated which meant he could fly when you can't see the ground. >> reporter: the ntsb will investigate the cause of the crash. in petaluma, abc 7 news. new developments this

morning about aldon smith, the former 49/raider linebacker is reportedly in jail again. according to tmz he violated a condition of his bail. he was booked into jail a day after appearing in court for allegedly violating a restraining order in his domestic violence case. he was ordered to wear an ankle monitor. his bail set at $500,000. smith is due back in court wednesday afternoon. a man is under arrest and three people are hurt following a stabbing at the coliseum b.a.r.t. station in oakland. >> that 245 is a knife and it looks like a four to five-inch knife, male stabbing another male. >> i got a stab victim. lot of blood. >> police say it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon right near the fair gates. two of the victims were taken to the hospital. their conditions are not known at this time. the third person's injuries were

minor. the suspect's name hasn't been released. it's not clear exactly what led up to that stabbing. b.a.r.t. closed the station, as well as the connecter to oakland international airport for two hours. it re-opened at 5:00 p.m. just 30 minutes before the warriors game tipped off at oracle arena. in mendocino county a body's been recovered near the site of where a family's suv plunged into the water. it was found yesterday afternoon floating in the surf. the sheriff's office is working on the identity. at this time they do know it is an african-american female, which means it could be 1 of the 2 missing girls from that crash. sheriff's officials say they'll need to use dna analysis to make a positive i.d. the crash happened two weeks ago just days after washington state authorities began investigating the parents, sara and jennifer hart, for possible child neglect. the couple's six adopted children were believed to be in that suv. five bodies were found.

bodies of three other children were not immediately recovered. the body found yesterday could be one of those. this morning we know the name of the woman found dead off grizzly peak in the oakland hills. she's a 53-year-old woman from san pablo. her white toyota prius had gone over a 100-foot cliff. the crash is under investigation. she had been reported missing by her boyfriend earlier in the week. he was in hawaii and is cutting his vacation short to return to the bay area. the deluge of rain friday night into yesterday morning wreaked havoc on stinson beach. we take you to a parking lot that now looks more like a river. >> reporter: the heavy rain friday night caused a small creek that normally runs through and underneath a parking lot to flood. it washed away the structures around it that normally contain it.

>> we just got so much rain within a short period of time. we got about eight inches of rain. >> and then this -- a waterfall is left behind from where the parking lot collapsed close to where it meets stinson beach. 40 parking spaces were washed out to sea. >> this is crazy. i'm always going boogie boarding down here at the beach. never seen this much water. that's all washed out. unbelievable. that's a huge, huge amount of water. i've never seen it like this. we didn't think we could get to the beach but we did. we found a way. >> reporter: official word from the golden gate national park service is that both stinson an muer woods are closed to the public because of the storm damage. but people here at stinson beach are definitely not steering clear of this face. >> we're going to have an adventure. we decided to have it no matter what. we had to cross the river in to

the beach. >> reporter: at nearby park side, the damage is adding up. the market and snack bar closed because of it but the cafe is still open. the last time water rushed in like this was 36 years ago. from stinson beach, abc 7 news. >> repair work after that storm will take several days. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has a look. >> reporter: the atmospheric river lived up to its name causing lots of water to rush downhill in mill valley. the ground so saturated it caused this 50-foot free to fall on to bigelow avenue. that happened about 6:00 a.m. neighbors heard the explosion when the tree hit power lines. >> having sort of experienced the north bay fires, we were quite alarmed. we called 911 to just mention that we had heard something. we thought we saw what could be a spark. >> reporter: pg&e crews eliminated dangerous live wires and worked to restore power to the neighborhood. the owner of the blue spruce reflected on the loss.

>> lasted 100 years. no one got hurt. >> reporter: another tree fell this on to oakdale avenue. check it out, some branches now resting on this garage and across the street it narrowly missed damaging the garage right here. >> there are some risks being in sort of the more of a wilderness setting. >> reporter: in sonoma county this large sinkhole has cut off salmon creek road in the town of bodega. repair could take days. >> we got to get out -- my wife's pretty stuff. she's pretty sick and stuff. if something happens, how am i going to get her out of here. >> reporter: this area looks more like a stretch. the storm left this stretch under water. the driver of this pick-up truck taking a chance and plowing through. yosemite valley will likely re-open at noon today following the merced river overflowing its banks from rain water and melting snow. between two and four feet of

water covered some roadways. visitors need to leave yosemite valley by 5:00 -- or they needed to, anyway, on friday night. >> not going to be destrakttrac flooding, catastrophic or not. but we will be out by 5:00. >> parts of yosemite at higher elevations remain open. it is rare for rangers to close yosemite valley which is usually open around the clock to park visitors. >> so the rain is gone for at least a few days. >> couple days. in fact we're going to warm up quite a bit. lots of sunshine, even this afternoon. here is a live shot as we look from our roof camera towards the exploratorium. it is calm and quiet out there so get ready for a big warm-up heading our way tomorrow. i have details coming up. >> sounds good. thank you, frances. also ahead, the national hockey league is standing strong with a youth hockey team coping with tragedy. why a crash in canada hits close to home for the coach of the sharks. and the latest on the

a dry day on tap. in fact, a warming trend is heading our way. frances dinglasan will be along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. police are investigating a fire in trump tower. cell phone camera catches the smoke and flames on the 50th floor of the midtown manhattan high-wise. more than 200 firefighters raced to the scene. four of them suffered minor injuries while battling flames inside that apartment. >> it was extremely hot in the apartment. units pushing in are in great danger but they do, nonetheless. the apartment, they tell me, was quite large. >> arson investigators are now on the scene. no members of the first family were at trump tower at the time.

trump tower includes luxury apartments, offices, and a shopping center. you're looking at what happened after an suv sheared off a fire hydrant in santa cruz yesterday morning. that jeep ended up on one side leaning against a power pole. santa cruz firefighters tell us the driver was okay after they spent about ten minutes freeing him from his suv. pg&e shut off power in the nearby area so a tow truck crew could remove the jeep and part of so cal avenue remained closed for clean-up after the crash. canada is in mourning after at least 15 people died and 14 others were injured when a bus carrying a junior hockey team crashed. that team was on its way to a playoff game when the bus collided with a truck. abc news reporter ron claiborne has details on the driver of that truck. >> reporter: the horrific scene. a bus ripped open, wreckage

spilled on to a rural highway, this after the bus with the canadian junior hockey league humboldt broncos team onboard t-boned by a tractor-trailer truck in canada. >> the nightmare has happened. >> 14 others on the bus were injured. the father of one tweeting this heartwrenching photo of injured players holding hands. >> we will never forget the members of our broncos family who were taken from us and who are injured. >> reporter: the broncos, whose players range in age from the teens to 20, were on their way to a semi-final junior league hockey game. in a statement canada's prime minister justin trudeau saying an entire country is in shock and mourning. this is every parent's nightmare. canadian police say the driver

of that tractor-trailer truck was not injured in the accident. he was initially detained by authorities for questioning but has since been released and is said to be undergoing psychological counseling. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. >> that crash has hit close to home for many nhl teams. before last night's game at s.a.p. center the sharks held a moment of silence for the victims. it was a similar scene before every game played yesterday in the nhl. the sharks head coach says taking the bus is a way of life for those who want to make it to the professional ranks. >> anybody that's got to this level has been on those buses at different points. and so it really hits close to home on a lot of different fronts. >> he has two sons playing hockey right now and he says much like the junior hockey league players, they, too, ride the bus. an elderly couple married for 75 years died together in the north bay wildfires. the only thing to survive -- the

bills that just kept on coming. >> i really couldn't even think about it. other people had already told me this. you should call michael finney. >> a special "7 on your side" tonight at 11:00. i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan. we're waking up to some clear skies and some partly cloudy conditions. here's live doppler 7. it is quiet out there with some clouds over parts of the bay area. i want to show you outside, a beautiful live shot of the golden gate bridge and the san francisco rock 'n' roll marathon just got under way so we could see some runners here in the next few hours. san francisco's currently 51. it's going to be in the low 50s for the marathon during the next few hours. oakland, 48 degrees. chillier in gilroy at 46. check out this beautiful view as well from the east bay hills camera out towards mt. diablo. sunrise at 6:44.

40s through novato. we have a partly cloudy morning, a sunny afternoon. totally dry. you can put the umbrellas away. then, much warmer tomorrow. some areas and neighborhoods will be coming up by as much as ten degrees. the next chance of rain is tuesday through thursday but it is not a wash-out. it's kind of hit and miss. i'll show you that in a little bit. highs today will be mainly in the 60s but some neighborhoods will get up to 70 degrees. in fairfield and antioch hitting 70 this afternoon. san jose at 69 degrees. san francisco, 61. look for some mid to upper 60s through parts of the north bay with a few high clouds ther santa rosa 67. san rafael, 66. if you're headed to the giants game today, i'll still grab a light jacket because it will be breezy. we'll see the onshore flow in the afternoon pick up to 10 to 20 miles per hour. game time starts at 1:05. 58 degrees and in the low 60s by

the afternoon. overnight lows will be even cooler because of the clear skies. we'll lose a lot of heat overnight so even some 40s, especially in the north bay like ukiah, 40. santa rosa 44. san francisco 52. a few clouds off the coast. for the next seven days, in san jose we are right at about average for today. 69. but check out tomorrow. we'll hit 80 in san jose. then we'll drop down. we have a couple frontal systems moving in. so tuesday we have a chance of rain. wednesday and into thursday. thursday a cold front pushes through wednesday night, into thursday and that's going to really drop temperatures as well as bring some low snow levels to the bay area. on abc 7's exclusive storm impact scale, this next system heading our way on tuesday, light showers. best chance in the afternoon/evening. we're talking less than a quarter-inch of rainfall. you see as it moves through, we could get some light rain through the bay area. here's the accuweather seven-day

forecast -- so enjoy the beautiful sunny skies today with temperatures near 70 inland. around the bay mid 60s. at the coast still cool, upper 50s to near 60. then that rapid warm-up tomorrow. even more sunshine. bright, especially inland, near 80. well above average around the bay as well. mid 70s, mid 60s at the coast. light rain moves through tuesday. it is a quick-moving one so not much rain. then looks like another front moves through late wednesday night into thursday bringing us some very chilly conditions on thursday. so notice how temperatures ramp up tomorrow by ten degrees, and then tumble by about 20 degrees for thursday. is there isn't that kind of odd just to have that one hot day? >> yeah, it is -- well, i mean, yes and no. i could go on and on about weather. enjoy it while it lasts. >> that's right. thank you, frances. just ahead -- an unusual visitor on a roof. and that's not the only surprising place goats ended up

in the last week. with pg&e in the sierras. and i'm an arborist since the onset of the drought, more than 129 million trees have died in california. pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future.

to move. she did not have many things to fill her new home. >> i don't have to stress over trying to make enough money for a bed today, make enough money for my son's bed next week. >> people have just been so generous, incredible with their time. people have helped me pack the truck with their help, bringig things, dropping them off in my garage. i've just been overwhelmed. >> reporter: more than 50 people responded to hickey's post to help kenesha patterson. even goats need a little rest and relaxation. a man working on a roof in australia noticed a strange sight nearby. you see that goat on the roof of a multi-million dollar home in one of perth's prestigious suburbs. no one knows how it got up there but it apparently stayed on the roof several hours before finally jumping off. last week in pennsylvania a pair of goats got stuck in this precarious situation. thank youfully local authorities were able to get both to safety

welcome back, everyone. we're starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist, frances dinglasan, who's in for lisa. >> hi, care lip. we have sunshine this sunday in store for us. but as we look at the satellite imam, under partly cloudy conditions in some locations but how pretty it is as we look from our exploratorium camera out towards the bay bridge. it is clearing out there. patchy fog could still develop in some spots, inland areas in the upper 40s around the bay and coast, low 50s during the 7:00 hour. by noon, clearing skies, and thn lots of sunshine for the afternoon hours. near 70 inland. mid 60s around the bay. and upper 50s to near 60 at the coast. it is going to be a pleasant evening as well with clear skies overnight. then a big warm-up. i'll let you know what your high will be tomorrow.

frances, thank you. the san francisco sheriff's office wants to expand the body camera program in city jails. according to "the examiner," the sheriff is looking for $400,000 to pay for 400 more devices. the cameras would go to deputies at each of the city's jails and to those who patrol zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. body cameras were given to 40 deputies back in august as part of a pilot program. that was the result of at least two alleged instances where deputies forced inmates to fight each other. three deputies face criminal charges in connection with those fights. turning now to the epa chief under increasing pressure. new details are coming to light about the growing tab for taxpayers when it comes to scott pruitt's travel and security. abc news white house correspondent tara palmieri has the new numbers. >> reporter: new alarming numbers about how much embattled epa chief scott pruitt is

costing taxpayers. documents show he spent $832,000 in the first quarter of his term on security costs. nearly double the amount spent by his two predecessors in the obama separation. at that pace it would add up to nearly $3 million in just over a year. >> scott has done a fantastic job. he's a fantastic person. >> reporter: the white house has not responded to these latest figures but the president is standing by pruitt, tweeting he is under siege. >> trump world loves scott pruitt so you also have the huge base of the party that actually knows who the epa director is, which isn't normally the case. >> reporter: but there are growing calls on both sides of the aisle for him to resign. one democrat demanding answers on why pruitt requested security 24/7, including allegedly on personal trips to disneyland and the rose bowl. pruitt's team said they received an unprecedented number of threats, although there have been no arrests or charges. >> any time that you do

transformational things there are critics and there are people that come against new that regard. >> reporter: this isn't the only allegation against pruitt. he's been accused of wasteful spending on first class and private flights installing a soundproof phone booth for $43,000 and approving steep pay raises for top aides. one adding nearly $57,000 to the staffer's salary. >> i found out about that yesterday and i changed it. >> who did it. >> there will be some accountability. >> a career person? or political person? >> i don't know. >> you don't know? >> i found out about this yesterday and i corrected the action. >> reporter: epa official tell abc news that prude did know about the raises and supported them. tara palmieri, abc news, washington. coming up on "this week," senator lindsey graham weighs in on the future of embattled epa administrator scott pruitt. the republican senator will also discuss the tariff proposals coming from the white house. watch the full interview on "this week" with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 right here on abc 7.

police in germany do not believe an islamic extremist group was behind yesterday's deadly van attack that killed two people. the driver shot himself to death after plowing into a crowd outside a popular bar in muenster near germany's western border with the netherlands. that crash injured at least 20 people, six still in critical condition. investigators say the driver was a german citizen. they are trying to learn more about his background. >> when you throw in mental health possibilities, it still could be an extremist group like isis or al qaeda, but it also could be a person who is just paranoid, delusional. >> witnesses tell police other people may have run from that van after it crashed into the crowd. police are trying to verify if that actually happened. next, it's what many people want to hear -- early retirement. a plan to make that happen. it's pay now to play later.

yourself which means your savings grow even faster. >> jeremy, his wife and their son, now traveling the world. >> our son turns 3 next week. he's been to 29 countries. how did we ever really have time for jobs. >> reporter: but is f.i.r.e. a fit for everyone. >> you're really analyzing your budget down to the penny and making sure that you can put away sometimes 50%, 60%, 70% of your income and you're living very lean. so it is not fun. >> jeremy hasn't had a job in more than six years. he says the only work he does now is for his own blog which takes him approximately four hours a week. he says that makes him $50,000 a year. still ahead here on "abc 7 mornings," we're going deep underground to check out the construction on san francisco's central subway. just how close is it to completion? and here is a live from our east bay hills camera. a beautiful, beautiful day on tap after all that rain. and a record breaking perhaps.

clear lake. the next chance of rain is on tuesday on abc's storm impact scale, we are expecting light showers so this is ranking a one, light system. best chance in the afternoon less than a quarter-inch of rainfall and you'll notice it moves in some light rain, tuesday afternoon. then we get a break all the way until late wednesday night into thursday. notice this system wednesday night into thursday will be much cooler. not a lot of rain associated with it though. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. mostly sunny today, inland warming up to near 70. mid 60s around the bay. at the coast upper 50s to near 60 with an onshore breeze continuing. but tomorrow high pressure builds so we've got a one-day warm-up. near 80 degrees. some locations will be ten degrees above average. then light rain on tuesday. we get a break through most of wednesday before showers move in late wednesday into thursday bringing us some low snow levels. although there is not a lot of moisture but temperatures will come up by ten degrees in inland areas, then drop by 20 degrees

happening today -- thousands of runners are hitting the streets of san francisco for the annual rock 'n' roll half marathon. here is a live look from our golden gate bridge camera where you see some of those participants running across the span. both the east and west sidewalks are temporarily closed on the bridge to bicyclists and pedestrians until 10:30. the 13.1-mile course starts at pier 39 at 6:15 this morning. it will take runners across the golden gate bridge, past marina green and ft. mason and return next to giradelli square.
