good morning. i'm diane macedo. good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson with some of the top headlines this morning. the pentagon is denying reports out of syria that the u.s. has launched an airstrike in retaliation for the suspected chemical attack on civilians. president trump has vowed there will be a big price to pay, full report next. police are searching for casey lawhorn. he allegedly killed his mother and a friend at his house in tennessee, writing a detailed facebook post about the incident. police say he should be considered armed and dangerous. breaking overnight, dozens of people were injured when a bus carrying high school students hit a low overpass on new york's long island. it was carrying students and chaperones returning from a trip to europe.

and the man known as captain america wins the masters. those are some of our top stories on this monday, april 9th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we do say good morning, everybody. and what's turning out to be a very busy monday morning. we're going to start with breaking news. the pentagon right now is denying claims that the u.s. conducted a missile strike hours ago in syria. >> syria accuses the u.s. the u.s. is weighing its options in response to the attack. president trump pointed the finger at syrian leaders, iran and vladimir putin.

>> reporter: dozens of people are dead after an alleged chemical attack in the syrian city of douma. patients flooded into makeshift clinics. many of them women and children struggling to breathe. the united nations security council is set to hold two meetings on monday. one at the request of russia, although the topic of that meeting is unclear. the second at the request of the united states and eight other countries to discuss the attack in syria. the syrian regime, backed by the russians denies using chemical weapons against its people, claiming the videos were fabricated. but president trump is condemning the attack and making a rare, direct criticism of the russian president, tweeting president putin, russia and iran are responsible for backing animal assad, big price to pay. lindsey graham says how the president responds will be a defining moment in his presidency. >> so assad's at it again. they see our resolve breaking,

they see our determination to stay in syria waning, and it's no accident they use chemical weapons. >> reporter: tom bossert said the president and his council discussing options. >> we are looking into the attack at this point, the state department. >> the president was already scheduled to meet today with senior military leaders. we should note that today is also the first day on the job for national security adviser john bolton who has previously called for airstrikes on syria. in the meantime, concerns about a trade war between the u.s. and china have eased a little bit. hong kong and other exchanges tacking on solid gains. the balance may be the result of stocks being picked up after suffering a sharp recent loss. the dow opened this morning 10%

below its record my late january. dow futures indicating a higher open on wall street this morning. the attorney for stormy daniels is trying again to question president trump under oath. michael avenatti filed a renewed motion, seeking to depose the president and michael cohen after a judge ruled his initial filing was premature. he mentions the president's claim last week that he did not know about a $130,000 payment cohen made to daniels before the election. daniels is hoping to prove that a non-disclosure agreement that she signed is invalid. and the trump tower apartment that burned over the weekend did not have a sprinkler. president trump lobbied against a law that would have required sprinklers to be added to old apartments. the 67-year-old owner died soon after being brought to a hospital.

this week arizona sends troops to the mexican border. california hasn't decided yet. marcus moore with the story. >> reporter: the trump order in motion. up to 4,000 national guard troops headed to the u.s./mexico border. 250 in texas, in what the department of homeland security is calling a growing crisis. >> we have a leaking boat on the border, and we're quibbling about how much water is in the boat and how fast we're bailing it out. >> reporter: last year illegal crossings were at historic lows. but were up 200% in march. >> we don't know if they're murderers, killers, ms-13, we're throwing them out by the hundreds. >> reporter: the president now sending in the guard. but the newly-arriving troops won't work as law enforcement, instead, advising border patrol agents. sister pimmenthal runs this shelter. >> it is important to keep our

country safe. but it's important to never overlook the human aspect of theis families and their needs. >> reporter: critics have called the president's plan a political move. and they have said some of these border communities are the safest in the country. despite this crisis that the department of homeland security says is unfolding. it's unclear how many more troops will be deployed. and the former russian spy as well as his daughter, both of them were poisoned in england, may soon be heading to the u.s. british intelligence is working with the cia to protect them. the u.s. is among five countries where england is looking to have sergei and yulia skripal to have new identities. turning to severe weather overnight. a snowstorm moved out of the midwest into the ohio valley.

oklahoma school districts are closed today as striking teachers continue their school funding protest. educators want money for schools. they say the budget allotting $40 million extra doesn't go farr enough. walkout is entering the second week. >> you have some 200,000 students in that state. parents probably supporting it but are like, what do we do with these kids who are going into the second week. so a certain millennial is trying to track down the remaining heroes of what's known as the greatest generation. >> the 20 year old is traveling around the u.s. and canada in hopes of interviewing every living world war ii veteran. he founded a non-profit. >> he also wants to show future generations just how devastating war can be. he has interviewed nearly 900 veterans so far. >> cool project.

after she was accused to have been dismissed because she was black. the judge upheld her dismissal, but the new volley over jurors could delay the start of the retrial. >> i think it's going to be challenging for jurors to put aside what they've heard about the me too movement, the time's up movement and all of the pretrial publicity that bill cosby has gotten. >> reporter: cosby faces three felonies, stemming from allegations he drugged and sexually assaulted a women's basketball administrator. he says the sex was consensual. in june of last year, he raised a fist in triumph after the first trial ended in a mistrial with the jury deadlocked. >> we were disappointed that the jury was not able to come to a unanimous verdict in this case. we appreciate the extraordinary sacrifices that the jurors made. >> so this retrial is expected to last a month. the lineup of witnesses for the prosecution is a little bit different this time around.

it. >> president trump calls bashar al assad an animal and is criticizing vladimir putin, saying he and iran are responsible for backing assad. >> after recently announcing that he wanted to pull american troops out of syria soon, the president is now warning of a big price to pay. abc's ian pannell with the latest. >> reporter: the serious questions about whether these images prove the syrian regime just attacked its own people with chemical weapons again, a war crime. the strikes came after dusk saturday, following a months-long barrage in douma near the capital damascus. what happened next is difficult to watch. patients pouring into makeshift clinics with burning eyes, struggling to breathe. at least 40 dead, choking on an unknown substance. once again, the regime of syrian president bashar al assad backed by the russians has denied using

chemical weapons, claiming these videos are fabricated. it said the same thing repeatedly in the past. it's been just over a year since a similar attack. >> tonight i ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in syria from where the chemical attack was launched. >> reporter: there have been at least a half dozen suspected chemical attacks in syria since the president launched those airstrikes which were meant to deter. the russian foreign ministry warning against any new fighting in the area, and that the fighting has now stopped. it may be impossible to verify who carried out this latest attack or what it was, but the agony, suffering and death of syria's children is beyond. what does america and the world do about it.

the u.n. security council is holding an emergency session. but washington declares nothing is off the table. unless there's concrete action, it's hard to see anything stopping president assad or his allies. another high stakes problem facing the administration right now, north korea. the u.s. says kim jong un is willing to discuss getting rid of nuclear weapons on the korean peninsula when he meets with president trump. sources say for the first time the message came directly from north korea rather than a third party. the meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place next month, but no further details have been announced. another white house departure to tell you about. the spokesman for the security council michael anton is stepping down. he had fiercely defended the america first policy. now president trump thanked him for his service and called him a great guy. the announcement comes as john

bolton officially takes over today as the president's third national security adviser. the trump administration is defending the decision to send troops to the border. homeland security adviser tom bossert says there was a 200% increase in border crossings last month. >> we are not waiting for the uptick to get ahead of us. >> no one knows how many successful border crossings there are. texas sent 250 troops to the border on friday. arizona says it will send 150 to its border this week. millions of us are fed up with the winter that just won't go away. a band of snow sweeping overnight from the western great lakes to the ohio valley. >> the storm took its toll in the northern plains this weekend. a jet in sioux falls skidded off the runway.

players on a youth hockey team. residents of the hometown gathered to mourn the victims. >> many wearing the team's jersey. a semi truck slammed into their bus. the organization will stay in business and plans to play next season. and authorities in illinois say this man, rahim king, is on the loose and should be armed, considered, that is, armed and dangerous. king is accused of opening fire with an assault rifle, killing three people while riding on a rented party bus. the driver of the bus called police while continuing to drive after that alleged attack took place. there's a recall notice for about 350,000 ford trucks and suvs here in north america. the automaker says the vehicles may be in a different gear than what's shown on the shift indicator. that increases the chance that they may roll away and cause a crash. one crash and one injury have been reported.

a tour bus carrying students crashed in long island. the top was sheared off. dozens were hurt. >> the group had been to europe and was heading to a mall for pickup by their parents. the bus driver was not from the area and reportedly was not aware that commercial vehicles are not allowed on that particular roadway. the bridge that was hit is probably the lowest on the entire roadway. also here in new york, investigators are working to uncover the cause of a deadly fire in trump tower. we're learning there was no sprinkler in the victim's apartment. >> during his time as a real estate developer, president trump argued against having sprinklers in older buildings. he argued that the cost would be too much. >> reporter: fire investigators looking for the cause of this deadly fire, 50 floors up. debris falling from the trump tower, home of the president's penthouse in the global headquarters of the trump organization.
