of heart disease nearly in half. >> why a teacher says parents are to blame for her students' bad behavior. and how a pocket dial cost a man his job. a good tuesday morning. we begin with the president's longtime attorney under investigation after the fbi raided his office and homes. >> agents seized a slew of documents including some related to michael cohen's $130,000 payment to the adult film actress stormy daniels. cohen is reportedly being investigated for bank fraud and campaign violations. federal prosecutors launched the raids apparently after referral from special counsel robert mueller and suffice it to say the president was not happy about that. abc's arlette saenz has the latest from washington. arlette, good morning. >> reporter: diane and kendis, good morning. president trump's personal attorney michael cohen has described himself as a fix-it guy for the president. but on monday, cohen found

himself at the center of a series of fbi raids which sent president trump fuming. a series of fbi raids monday took president trump's personal attorney michael cohen by surprise. fbi agents in new york city armed with a warrant raided his office, home and a room at this hotel where cohen was staying. >> that is really now in a whole new level of unfairness. >> reporter: surrounded by his top military advisers who sat stone-faced, president trump lashed out. >> they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys, a good man, and it's a disgraceful situation. it's a total witch-hunt. >> reporter: cohen's attorney steven ryan called the raid completely inappropriate and unnecessary adding it resulted in the unnecessary seizure of protected attorney/client communications between a lawyer and his clients. he said the raid was the result of a referral by special counsel robert mueller's office. sources familiar with the

investigation tell abc news the raids were not about russia, but fbi agents took a host of documents including some possibly tied to cohen's $130,000 payment to adult film star stormy daniels in the days leading up to the 2016 election. >> i think this is seismic. >> reporter: the raid came four days after the president said he knew nothing about the payment. cohen has said he entered into the agreement with daniels out of loyalty to his friendship with mr. trump. daniels alleges she had an affair with mr. trump back in 2006. a claim the white house denies. despite president trump saying agents broke into michael cohen's office and home, the fbi did have search warrants for the raids. the warrants were obtained by an interim u.s. district attorney in new york who was appointed by the trump administration. diane and kendis. >> there are many checks and balances before that sort of warrant can happen.

arlette saenz in d.c., thank you. president trump also vented at the justice department in those remarks. >> now, trump renewed his criticism of the attorney general, jeff sessions, who of course recused himself last year from the russia investigation. >> the attorney general made a terrible mistake when he did this and when he recused himself or he should have certainly let us know if he was going to recuse himself and we would have used a -- put a different attorney general in, so he made what i consider to be a very terrible mistake for the country. >> well, that recusal by sessions led to the appointment of the special counsel robert mueller. the justice department has not commented on the president's latest round of criticism. >> and the special counsel's office is reportedly investigating a payment to the trump foundation arranged by michael cohen. sources tell "the new york times" a ukrainian billionaire paid the foundation $150,000 for a video appearance by then candidate trump at a 2015 conference. that billionaire is the some of the former president of

ukraine, so the transaction may be viewed as an effort to buy influence. he's also known for giving millions to the clinton foundation. all right, let's turn our attention to the showdown with syria. president trump is promising a quick and forceful response to the suspected chemical weapon as tack that took place over the weekend. this as he met with senior military advisers. he said they'll make major decisions over the next day or two. molly hunter is following the developments. >> reporter: president trump making it clear nothing is off the table in syria. >> we're making a decision as to what we do with respect to the horrible attack that was made near damascus and it will be met and it will be met forcefully. >> reporter: the threat comes after a suspected chemical attack in douma, a town just outside of damascus controlled by rebels fighting syrian president bashar al assad. >> it was an atrocious attack. it was horrible. this is about humanity. we're talking about humanity.

and it can't be allowed to happen. >> reporter: for the first time president trump criticized russian president vladimir putin, assad's most powerful supporter alongside iran. >> does putin bear responsibility for this? >> he may, yeah, he may, and if he does, it's going to be very tough. very tough. >> he'll pay a price. >> everybody is going to pay a price. he will, everybody will. >> reporter: assad's regime denies using chemical weapons claiming the videos are fabricated. syrian activists took video of russian specialists allegedly visiting the site of the attack. activists tell abc news they were on the ground for just 20 minutes and after their survey russia's foreign minister said there were no traces of chlorine or any other chemical substance used against civilians. one year ago a suspected sarin gas attack in syria prompted president trump to order military strikes on a syrian airfield as a warning to assad. that airfield back up and running just days later. a response over the latest suspected chemical attack could be more comprehensive according

to chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz. >> if trump decides to launch missiles again, it could be a broader and larger strike. missiles launched from u.s. destroyers, submarines and possibly b2 stealth bombers in hopes assad takes it seriously this time. >> reporter: now, it's clear that last year's one-off didn't work, so as martha said if, we do see a strike, we may see a more powerful response but one that may be coordinated with international allies as part of some greater strategy. diane, kendis. >> it's true, the american and french presidents have spoken several times in the last couple of days. molly, thank you. and china's president is promising to lower tariffs on vehicle imports. the pledge comes after president trump threatened to significantly raise tariffs on chinese goods. in a speech to an economic forum president xi never mentioned president trump but urged dialogue rather than confrontation. asian stocks and u.s. stock futures rose after that speech. some sobering news about the

u.s. deficit this morning. it is expected to surpass $1 trillion much sooner than estimated. the nonpartisan congressional budget office says the deficit will permanently climb over the trillion dollar mark in 2020. that's two years sooner than previous reports. it blames that climb on the republican tax cut plan and the massive spending bill that was just passed by congress. the report also says the nation's debt will spike from 22 trillion to $33 trillion in the next decade. and time now for a look at your weather on this tuesday morning. rain and snow are falling overnight in the northeast and roads may be slick this morning. well then the precipitation will clear out. tomorrow it will finally feel like spring. later today temperatures will reach the mid-40s in upper midwest and high temps in the central plains will be close to 60. the same goes for the northwest. the south and the rockies will be in the 70s. take a look at phoenix.

get the kids out. breaking overnight in edgewater, new jersey, some young girls had to jump from a second floor balcony as a fire raged through their dance studio. they tried to get ladders to

them but they were too short. a liquor store owner did manage to climb up to break a window so those students could get out. the mayor says it was one of the bravest things he's ever seen. >> our first responders here, everyone did a wonderful job getting those kids out, getting the building evacuated and getting the fire contained. >> it's a miracle with the heavy fire volume that we had on arrival that everybody got out the way they did. >> the store owner and a cop caught some of those girls as they jumped or fell. amazingly no serious injuries in the incident. the cause of the fire is under investigation. well this, just terrible. the coroner's office in saskatchewan, canada, admits they told the wrong family their son was killed in the bus crash involving hockey players. 15 members of the humboldt broncos was killed when a tractor trailer slammed into the bus. xavier labelle who is right there on the right was originally listed among the decease. he actually survived and parker tobin who was listed as one of the survivors died as a result of the collision.

authorities say the mistake occurred partly because all the players had dyed their hair blond for the playoffs. wells fargo is reportedly facing a record fine for abuses in auto insurance and mortgage lending. the government is looking at a fine of up to a billion dollars and that bank is accused of forcing some into unnecessary auto insurance policies and charging mortgage borrowers improper fees. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg is facing an intense public grillingly lawmakers today. he starts two days of questioning before congressional committees on everything from user privacy to russian meddling in the election. a copy of his prepared remarks say he'll apologize for facebook's role in spreading fake news and hate speech and for allowing foreign interference in elections. a little bit of history on capitol hill. tammy duckworth is now the first u.s. senator to give birth while in office. the illinois democrat welcomed her second daughter on monday. her name, miley pearl, and she was born just after 7:00 in the morning. for the next 12 weeks senator duckworth will be available

security after a topless protester jumped a barricade getting within just feet of cosby. the woman was identified as an actress who appeared in four episodes of "the cosby show" in the early '90s. michigan state's men's basketball is alleged in a rape case. the woman told the university counselor about the incident. the counselor allegedly advised the woman to not take her case to the police. and in the meantime, this seems to be a case of road rage caught on camera. sarasota, florida, here the driver of a gray mazda appeared to veer sharply to the right knocking that motorcyclist off the road. the biker reportedly suffered some fractured ribs. police are looking for theiver catth and there's new evidence this morning that exercise could lower your risk of heart disease even if it runs in your family. researchers looked at data from nearly half a million people in great britain and found that

monday morning. they were just returning from spring break. by then they had determined it was a hoax. police in emeryville said canceling classes was the right decision at the time and parents we talked to stand by the decision. >> yes, to make sure all kids are safe. if i'm dropping my kids off at school and they are going to spend six or seven hours, i want to make sure they are safe. >> there's been too many instances of agencies and organizations not taking threats seriously or vetting them out. >> reporter: here is a map to show you how widespread this was. schools from sonoma county down to south san francisco all reported receiving the threat. police determined this an online competition to shut down schools. they do not consider it serious. bay area schools will be open today. emeryville said it will have officers stationed at schools this morning just to make sure everyone feels safe.
