live where you live, this a sbc 7 news. waiting for zuck, where the public portion of the apology tour for facebook ceo begins in moments. thank you for joining us, i'm reggie o'kee. we pretty much know what he'll say, but the question right now, what are the members of the committees in the room going to ask about facebook's privacy scandal including both california senators. abc is watching this all from capitol hill. kenne kenneth? > reporter: the hearing starts in 30 minutes. by the end of the day, mark zuckerberg will have been questioned by nearly half of the u.s. senate.

yes, lawmakers are demanding answers, and it's a chance for the man in charge of facebook to tell washington what the company is doing to protect user privacy. the facebook ceo's apology tour meeting with lawmakers ahead of the two-day grilling on capitol hill. in prepared testimony, the 33-year-old billionaire says facebook was used to spread fake news, hate speech, and allow interference in elections. it was my mistake and sorry, he says. i started facebook, i run it, and responsible for what happens here. >> are you doing enough to protect your users? >> reporter: the giant under fire for a massive data scandal, and this morning, 87 million woke up to a notice on their feeds notifying them their personal information was shared with cambridge analytica, the firm hired by the trump campa n campaign. >> if we don't reign in misuse of social media, none of us are going to have any privacy anymore. >> reporter: even lawmakers and

families likely to be among the 87 million users impacted. facebook says every member of congress has a facebook page. senator coops tweeted on today of all days, i found out there's two fix facebook accounts impersonating me. guess what, many of the friends appear to be russian accounts. facebook and mr. zuckerberg, this is unacceptable. facebook has a flurry of fixes including identifying political ads on screen and verifying if users are real or fake ahead of the 2018 midterms. again, zuckerberg in the hot seat in 30 minutes for the first of two hearings. reporting live on capitol hill, abc 7 news. >> going live as soon as it starts. facebook announced an award program to fight data abuse called data abuse bounty rewarding people who report misuse of data by app developers. the person has to have firsthand knowledge and proof of this. the reward is monetary and will be based on the impact of each

report. once facebook confirms the data abuse, it shuts down the offending app and takes legal action. while there's one real zuckerberg inside the capitol, 100 others lingered outside. an advocacy group placed 100 cardboard cutouts on the capitol lawn, each with zuckerberg in a t-shirt that says fix facebook. this is an online organization active on issues like human and animal rights, climate change, and poverty. a live look in washington, d.c. where the ceo will testify before the congressional committee about the recent scandal, and we just learned seconds ago zuckerberg came into the underground garage in the capitol and whisked inging ingii cameras so far. we'll have a special report when proceedings begin and stream on the website and abc7 news, our

know, it's pretty odd that it's happening. >> reporter: the threat turned out to be a hoax, an online challenge to see how many classes would cancel. students stayed home yesterday, and parents had a hard time bringing them back today. >> i actually wanted to keep him home today, but i'm just going to let him come to school and see what happens and go from there. >> reporter: parents discussed the threat with their kids and showed news coverage to show them the threat was not real. >> they want to be acknowledgeable about what's going on and they feel all right from the news that they heard, that it's just a prank. >> reporter: yeah, the fbi confirmed that california is not the only state that received these hoaxes, but they went to about 46 states, so not just a california issue. i did check supersben dent supe superintende

superintendent, but i have not heard back. >> so frustrating someone's doing that, okay, thank you. new at 11:00, a special class in the south bay, the lesson, how to survive an active shooter attack, a week after the shooting incident at youtube san bruno campus. jessica castro has the story now from san jose. >> active shooter. >> reporter: it's becoming frequent, active shooter in workplaces and public spaces. in the bay area in these last two months, a small san francisco barbershop, veterans home, and youtube all targets. these events and others around the nation have groups like national vips on high demand. >> organizations are beginning to realize that they have a really significant role in protecting their people. >> reporter: the nonprofit based here in the bay area offers active shooter prevention and preparedness services nationwide. today, they were offering a class at casino matrix in san jose. >> makes you feel empowered, makes you feel like there's

police officers are keeping body cameras and microphones on. officers cannot deactivate or mute cameras until the investigation activity has ended. this comes after the criticism of the officers for muting minutes of footage after last month's shooting leading to distress between the department and the community. new detills on the attack of two bart passengers in the east bay. the man accused of the stabbings is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon. authorities say robert dolph stabbed two passengers saturday night. that attack was unprovoked. a good samaritan stepped in to stop dolph. david harris suffered cuts to his hands subduing him. a woman in her 60s is out of the hospital, but her brother is in critical condition. harris did not hesitate to put his own safety at risk. >> i didn't think. just reacted. ran over and by the time i got there, she had dropped to the

floor, and her brother was being stabbed. >> reporter: and harris tells us he knows how it feeling to be a crime victim. he was attacked and stabbed when in his 30s, and no one came to help him. new this morning, a petition circulating that asks officials of the san francisco marathon to clarify its policies regarding runners who are transgender. the marathon website asks people to register to select a gender, male or female, and the people behind the petition want officials to publicly said the race honors gender identity for transgender and gender queer individuals. boston, chicago, new york city, and london allows you to choose which gender you identify with. signing up for summer classes? they are not free. last year, city officials approved free tuition for those who live in san francisco, however, the free classes are funded only for fall and spring

kmesers. the mayor's office turned down request for summer funding. city college officials say the board meets next month for increased funding. the san francisco city attorney looking into legal action to protect people on sidewalks after several complaints of those electric scooters that have suddenly appeared all over town. it's illegal to ride scooters on sidewalk, and yet this is what we see everywhere. t they are working with the supervisor own regulations to regulate the two-wheelers. for now, the agency can't do anything because the scooters are not mentioned in any city ordnance. lime bike, bird ride, and spin own scooters and lease them to people who unlock them with a mobile phone app. another one bites the dust, newest cabinet member stepping down from the trump administration and demanding the u.n. to act. the new action the u.s. calls for at noon

is saying and stream the whole thing online and also on the abc7 news app. new this morning, investigators from the national transportation safety board are in arizona looking into the cause of a plane crash that killed six people. we brought you these live pictures of the wreckage on our morning news. the plane went down on a golf course in scottsdale last the destination was not revealed and weather was not a factor because there were clear skies and a 3 miles per hour winds. now to developing news. the u.s. called for a united nation security counsel vote on a resolution to condemn the continuing use of chemical weapons in syria. that vote is expected noon our time. the u.s. wants the u.n. to establish a new body to determine responsibility for chemical attacks. the international chemical weapons watchdog says it'll send a fact finding mission to the syria town where the alleged attack occur over the weekend. this morning, president

trump abruptly cancelled a planned trip to peru in order to concentrate on the crisis in syria. the trip was to attend the summit of the americas with leaders from north, central, and south america. it was to start on friday. at a meeting yesterday, the president said those responsible for a suspected gas attack near damascus will pay a heavy price for actions and promised a decision on a possible military response within 24-48 hours. and new this morning, president trump has lost another member of his cabinet. homeland security adviser vosser is resigning his post. no reason given. he was trusted enough by the white house to appear on this week last sunday. in a statement, president trump thanked them for the service and wished him well. another live look at washington, d.c. before we go to break. still have not seen mark zuckerbe zuckerberg enter the chambers yet to begin speaking.
