>> confronted by congress, facebook ceo mark zuckerberg apologized today for allowing data mining and promised to make reforms. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. zuckerberg faced two senate panels on capitol hill today. 42 members of congress had their chance to demand answers from one of the most powerful people in tech. >> abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is in the newsroom to break down today's testimony. >> ama and dan, testimony went on for five hours, and through it all zuckerberg kept a calm disposition. even after some serious grilling from lawmakers. with 44 senators focused squarely on facebook's ceo, mark zuckerberg began the hearing with an apology. >> we didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake. and it was my mistake. and i'm sorry. >> reporter: the apology stems from the massive data breach involving cambridge analytica, the political consulting firm hired by the 2016 trump

campaign. the company used personal information gathered from 87 million facebook users. >> were you part of a discussion that resulted in a decision not to inform your users? >> i don't remember a conversation like that. >> reporter: senators even questioned zuckerberg's right to privacy. >> mr. zuckerberg, would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night? >> no. >> reporter: but zuckerberg did share this. that facebook is cooperating with robert mueller's probe into russian meddling in the 2016 elections. >> have you or anyone at facebook been interviewed by the special counsel's office? >> yes. >> have i been interviewed? >> i have not. but we're working with them. >> reporter: zuckerberg's willingness to work with those in washington is an interesting shift according to jennifer king at berkeley school of information. >> the senators in the room made it fairly clear that if they don't, if they're not willing to work with them, they're going to take action whether they want it

or not. >> reporter: that action could come in the form of federal regulations and restrictions involving information sharing. lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> and during zuckerberg's five hours of testimony he made nearly $3 billion. that's because facebook's stock gained more than 4% today. however, facebook shares are still down about 11% since the data privacy scandal broke last month. we have breaking news in east oakland. several people have been rushed to the hospital after a crash involving a number of vehicles. it happened at 9:00 tonight two hours ago on 35th avenue at paxton. you can see debris littered around the street. right now northbound paxton is closed to traffic as police talk with witnesses and gather evidence. new details tonight about a stabbing at a bart station. we've learned the suspect is a convicted felon now charged with attempted murder. robert dolph was charged with six counts in connection with the attack at the coliseum bart station. dolph has two prior drug

convictions. he's now accused of wounding a woman and her brother in last saturday's attack. and the brother of stephon clark, the man shot and killed by sacramento police, was seen speaking with the police chief during i special city council meeting on department policies. the chief said he'll release more video of last month's shooting. the department also mandated that officers will have to get permission before turning off the microphone on their body cameras, which happened during the clark shooting. 2 1/2 weeks since an apple engineer died when his tesla crashed while on autopilot, his family is now speaking out to the i-team. dan noyes is here with more of his exclusive interview. dan. >> ama, tonight tesla released is strongest statement yet blaming the driver walter huang for what happened. but his family are fighting back. >> reporter: despite his long hours at apple last november 38-year-old walter huang found time for his family. >> his daily routine is to wake

up every morning before everyone else to make breakfast for everyone and make coffee for savon. >> i spoke with his brother and his wyche and the attorney they hired to sue tesla. walter died march 23rd in a fiery tesla crash in mountain view on his way to work. she couldn't reach him and turned on the news to see this. she told me walter had complained that his tesla's autopilot had steered toward that same barrier on several occasions. she recognized the location and the blue model x. >> did you think if was water? >> yeah, i think that's him. he just like love everything. for me. i not only lost my husband. i lost my best friend. >> reporter: tesla kofrmtd its data showed walter huang was using autoo'pilot at the time of the crash but that his hands were off the steering wheel for six seconds right before impact. tesla sent me a statement tonight that reads in part "autopilot requires the driver to be alert and have hands on the wheel. the crash happened on a clear day with several hundred feet of visibility ahead which means

an alert which you can get by downloading the abc 7 news app. search and rescue crews today scoured the rain-swollen eel river in mendocino county and will be back at it again tomorrow in the hopes of finding the missing sotapili family from valencia. the parents and their children, ages 9 and 12, were scheduled to stop in san jose on their way back from portland, oregon friday but they never showed up. a witness reported a maroon vehicle driving off highway 101 north of leggett around 1:00 p.m. that day. chp officers found parts of a honda they believe to be the same model and color that the family was driving. we have a bart delay to tell you about tonight. this one involves new train cars. bart hoped to have 60 of the cars in service by the end of last year. currently only ten are running due in part to issues during testing. bart projects delivery 200th new car won't happen until september of 2019. the rollout is set to be discussed at tomorrow's

metropolitan transportation commission meeting. electric scooters are popping up all over the place in san francisco as you may have noticed. tonight a city supervisor thinks the tech companies responsible for all of those scooters are not being good corporate citizens. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen explains why. >> reporter: electric scooters, the latest in tech transportation, are dealing with a few bumps in the road at san francisco city hall. >> i think it's important that we take this one seriously. >> reporter: the pedestrian safety advisory committee discussed the scooters, which have popped up i the hundreds on san francisco streets in the past three weeks. >> these are stationary items that are very, very dangerous for seniors, families, and especially people who are a.d.a. like blind animals. >> reporter: when not in use riders leave the rental scooters seemingly wherever they please which also obstruct city sidewalks. riders also tend to ignore laws like wearing a helmet and not riding on sidewalks. >> our legislation has to catch up. >> reporter: supervisor aaron peskin introduced legislation to require the three scooter companies to go through a

a week ago today a gunman attacked youtube, and tonight both youtube and google employees are thanking first responders for what they did that day. the tech companies are matching the donations of their employees to acknowledge the bravery of san bruno emergency crews who rushed to youtube's san bruno headquarters last tuesday. a total of $280,000 is being given to the san bruno community foundation to help support first responder programs. at bank of america to the growing list of companies taking a stand against gun violence following the parkland, florida shooting that left 17 people dead. bloomberg reports bank of america plans to stop lending to companies that make assault-style guns used for

in places like the south bay. temperatures at this hour in the 40s and the 50s. let's take a live look right now from our san jose airport camera right now. you will notice that skies overhead pretty good. visibility is good there. wet and windy tomorrowing afternoon, evening. bright and warmer friday, saturday, and another system comes your way on sunday. tomorrow morning definitely will need a sweater or a jacket. at least a light one. because it is going to be cool to chilly. temperatures in the 40s, 50s. there will be cloud cover around tomorrow afternoon. most of you seeing clouds except for lake and mendocino counties. that's where you're going to see the rain first. now, watch what happens as we head into the time period tomorrow as far as what's going to happen with the rain. your giants forecast against the d'backs, perfectly fine at at&t park. day game. 55 degrees. sun and clouds, 59 by the time the game is over. level 1 storm on our storm impact scale arrives tomorrow afternoon, evening, with light to moderate rain. most areas will get between a tenth to .4 of an inch.

and winds will be gusting 25 to 40 miles an hour. this is your hour by hour timeline. 3:00 tomorrow night. you'll notice where the rain is, which is north -- pretty much north of the bay area. by 5:00 p.m. you're starting to see the moderate pockets of rain across the north bay, shifting southward by 7:00 p.m. the yellows is indicating some brief downpours as we head into 7:00 p.m. it's going to be pretty wet across the region. and at 9:00 p.m. the light to moderate rain is moving into the east bay, the south bay, the santa cruz mountains. behind it scattered showers, cold enough to produce some snow showers, believe it or not, over the higher terrain up to the north. so don't be surprised if you live in lake county or mendocino county you that start to see some snow showers. what's left of thursday is just spotty light showers for not only the morning hours but also through the lunchtime hour and the north bay particularly heading into the afternoon. this is a typical april storm in terms of how much rain we're expecting, which isn't a whole lot, about a tenth to .4. ukia you could pick up more than
