trump and robert mueller is entering new territory. the president openly musing about using his signature catchphrase on mueller, you're fired. president trump is heading towards a new face-off with special counsel robert mueller. >> why don't i just fire mueller? well, i think it's a disgrace what's going on. we'll see what happens, but i think it's really a sad situation when you look at what happened and many people have said you should fire him. >> reporter: the white house insists the president has the authority to fire the special counsel. >> certainly believes he has the power to do so. >> reporter: but it's not clear if that's actually the case. justice department regulations state the special counsel can be removed from office only by the personal action of the attorney general. jeff sessions recused himself from the russia probe making the acting attorney general in this matter his deputy, rod rosenstein. according to a cnn report, the president may be considering firing rosenstein, a move intended to check mueller. the president's legal team met with mueller's staff on the same

day as the fbi raid on his personal attorney michael cohen. >> it's an attack on our country in a true sense. >> reporter: cohen told abc news fbi agents showed up at a hotel room where he was staying. they didn't storm in, simply knocked on the door, no s.w.a.t. teams, no guns drawn. he described the operation as respectful and courteous. in the wake of the raid, the president's closest confidants tell us he is now less inclined to be interviewed by mueller. something he has repeatedly promised to do even under oath. leaders in congress are warning the president, do not fire the special counsel. >> he should be allowed to finish the job. >> interfering with the investigation would be a disgrace. >> reporter: "the new york times" reports the president wanted to fire robert mueller in december. that's the second known instance where he considered ending the russia probe. now, up on capitol hill, two separate groups of bipartisan senators are reportedly banding together today to introduce

legislation to protect the special counsel from being fired. but, diane and kendis, it's unclear whether that bill would even come up for a vote. >> yeah, many senators saying the president won't likely sign it. arlette, thank you. and we have some new details this morning about plans for a possible u.s. military strike in syria. president trump promised a forceful response after a suspected chemical attack by the syrian government on its own people. there are indications a u.s. attack could be far broader than the one last year. abc's molly hunter is in london with more on that for us. good morning, molly. >> reporter: diane, good morning. that's right. we're told the military options being considered range from light to heavy impact and sources say a number of different attacks are now being considered. one of them includes striking the syrian military's command and control headquarters. another option would be bombing areas where it's believed assad is storing his chemical weapons. now, u.n. ambassador nikki haley is placing some of the blame on the country's backing assad including russia. haley lashed out at the u.n. security council after russia vetoed a resolution that would have formed an independent

investigation into that attack. take a listen. >> russia has chosen the assad regime again over the unity of this council. we have said it before that russia will stop at nothing to shield the assad regime. history will record that on this day russia chose protecting a monster over the lives of the syrian people. thank you. >> reporter: now haley is calling on other countries to act. french president emmanuel macron says he wants a strong and joint response, and british prime minister theresa may calls the suspected attack reprehensible. now, president trump has canceled his planned trip to south america in order to monitor the situation. diane, a decision could come at any time. back to you. >> molly hunter for us in london, thanks for the update, molly. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg will be back in front of congress today. this time testifying before a house committee about the company's privacy scandal. and the grilling could be

another marathon five-hour session. this morning, new information about exactly what mark zuckerberg was expecting senators to ask. in a bit of irony during a hearing about privacy, a photographer was able to snap this picture of zuckerberg's personal notes, the pages revealing he was prepared to answer whether he would resign with the bullet points founded facebook and solved problems before going to solve this one. >> we didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility and that was a big mistake. and it was my mistake. and i'm sorry. >> reporter: at times the 33-year-old billionaire found himself answering questions about the basic features of facebook, but he also faced a barrage of harsh comments and questions from two dozen senators about how to secure users' personal information. >> mr. zuckerberg, would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?

>> no. >> i think that may be what this is all about. your right to privacy. >> reporter: senator kennedy, the republican from louisiana, was more blunt. >> i don't want to vote to have to regulate facebook, but by god i will. a lot of that depends on you. your user agreement sucks. >> reporter: the hearing comes after cambridge analytica, the political consulting firm hired by the trump campaign, was able to allegedly harvest the personal information of at least 87 million facebook users without their consent. >> were these people, the 87 million people, users concentrated in certain states or are you able to figure out where they're from? >> i do not have that information with me. but we can follow up with your office. >> okay, because as we know, that election was close and it was only thousands of votes in certain states. >> reporter: zuckerberg also revealed facebook is now cooperating with robert mueller's investigation into

russian election meddling. >> have you or anyone at facebook been interviewed by the special counsel's office? >> yes. >> have you been interviewed? >> i have not but i know we're working with them. >> also zuckerberg seemed to leave open the possibility of a paid version of facebook for people who want to avoid the targeted advertising but he also promised there will always be a version of facebook that's free. turning now to the weather, temperatures are finally warming up in most parts. let's take a closer look at your wednesday forecast. take a look, a forming twister made for some dramatic video in downtown ft. lauderdale, florida. it was one of two confirmed twisters in that area. another one set off sirens at the city's airport and also delayed some flights and damaged at least one plane. luckily no injuries reported. looking at today's temperatures, spring finally makes an appearance in several areas. highs today will be in the 70s

in denver and kansas city, 60s in chicago by the end of the week, record warmth in parts of the northeast. the pastor at one of the country's most influential megachurches has resigned. coming up, the allegations against him. also ahead, two months after the florida school shooting local officials decide whether teachers can carry guns. and later, busted, a fourth grader skipped school to see the cubs game and runs into the one person he didn't want to see. >>

this is quite a mangled mess on a pennsylvania highway. hundreds of empty beer kegs spilled from a tractor trailer

that rolled over and plunged about 20 feet off an overpass onto i-95. it shut down that highway for several hours. but, more importantly, that truck driver is in critical condition. after a wave of criticism from president trump amazon is now facing protesters on its home turf. demonstrators gathered at the company's headquarters demanding a new tax on amazon and the city's largest businesses to pay for affordable housing. they say the tech industry is pushing out low income residents. and today is the day -- today is day eight, that is, of the teachers' strike in oklahoma. hundreds of teachers have just completed a 100-mile walk from tulsa to the capitol to demand more education funds. teachers in arizona are also threatening to walk out. well, teachers where the florida school massacre took place will not be armed. two months after the shooting the broward county school board has now rejected a state program that would allow certain teachers and other school staff members to carry guns. instead, they want to redirect the funds to hire more resource officers for the school.

bake of america says it will stop lending money to companies that manufacture military-style rifles available for civilians to buy however the bank apparently has no planks to stop doing business with retailers that sell them. a special group of girl scouts has set an ambitious deal during their cookie selling season. the young ladies from new york city's troop 6000 are all homeless. this is their first time selling cookies but their plan is to sell at least 6,000 boxes. scout leaders say the troop is making the girls feel connected and part of a family. >> the biggest impact that we see and when you talk to the girls, you'll hear them say they belong to something. they have a sisterhood within the other girl scouts. they talk to other girls who may be in their same situation and don't feel alone and feel like they have a stronger sense of community and belonging over all. >> girls in troop 6000 say they will be hard at work selling cookies all week. when we come back the

if convicted. >> there's no defense in the law for being intoxicated or making a prank. t.j. miller is in a lot of trouble, and he faces up to five years in jail if he's convicted. >> miller has been released on $100,000 bond and has not commented on the case. the pastor of one of the biggest evangelical churches in the country has abruptly stepped down amid allegations of sexual conduct. reverend bill hybels of the willow creek community church near chicago has announced he's retiring immediately six month as head of schedule. women in that church have accused him of inappropriate behavior that spanned decades. hybels denies wrongle doing. he says the controversy has been a distraction. bill cosby's sexual assault retrial is taking a more combative turn. the first of five accusers took the stand tuesday claimed he drugged and molested her during a coaching session and the defense launched an attack on his primary accuser

calling andrea constand a con artist who tried to frame him for his money. a doctor who ran a fertility clinic in canada is accused of using his own sperm to father 11 children out his client a knowledge. a class action lawsuit against dr. norman barwin cites cases dating back to the 1970s. the suit claims barwin was supposed to use the sperm from the male of the couple for insemination or from an anonymous donor. the lawsuit comes amid another lawsuit in idaho filed by a 36-year-old woman and her parents who learned through dna testing that their fertility doctor is actually her biological father. well, patience really is a virtue for an nba rookie who finally got called up to play after spending ten years in the minor leagues. andre ingram suited up with the lakers last night and he nailed a three-pointer on his very first shot. one day earlier he was in his exit interview with the minor league team when he learned that his season wasn't over just yet.
