driven in part by personal matters a desire to spend more time at home with his family and three young children. but the political implication of this cannot be ignored. the republicans are facing an uphill battle in the midterms. it could other republican candidates not to seek re-election as well. now, paul ryan since he was elected speaker in 2015 has been in charge of this fractured caucus, many times struggling to get the moderates in and ha hard-right conservatives to come together. but he achieved tax reform. there's then his relationship with the president, which has been rocky say to least. paul ryan has had to go to white house, call the president and convince him to get on board with his own party's agenda. >> mary, this might be a sign to

other republicans to get out as well. two other dozen republicans have decided to retire. >> yeah, announcing they're not seeking re-election. the concern here is, paul ryan's decision then opens the door for others to make that move as well. it certainly sends a powerful message when you someone like paul ryan the party's most prolific fund-raiser, as they try to navigate to work with the trump agenda. for him to say he's not seeking re-election sends a strong message. >> he's not had a closers, personal relationship with president trump. >> not at all. he's struggled to walk this fine line. of course, he's trying to appease his members here on the hill and also appease the president and often his shifting positions back and forth, look at the fight over the last six months, immigration, tax reform. paul ryan right in the center

trying to negotiate that relationship with donald trump. let's bring in cecilia vega for more on that, not a real close personal relationship with president trump but we do have a tweet from the president. >> yeah, in fact, we were told from the white house we wouldn't hear from the president, but a tweet, he called paul ryan a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election, he'll leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question. with we are with you, paul. then-candidate donald trump called paul ryan a weak and ineffective leader. paul ryan initially declined to endorse the candidate trump. he did. we saw paul ryan do time and time again, since donald trump became president, this artful dance from trying to distance themselves from the white house. in the end, paul ryan became a

pretty predictable ally to the president. immigration, the president's comments, those controversial comments on charlottesville, most recently his plan on tariffs -- paul ryan really fought back and do this artful dance of trying to keep a distance. paul ryan on those tariffs really fired back publicly and found himself at war with the white house on that one. ultimately, 23 by our count, george, republicans are retiring. so many of them nervous about having to go home and answer to washington, the policies, and frankly the behaviors of washington right now. now, we know that paul ryan is among them, george, he's coming to dinner tonight with other gop leaders here at the white house. >> it's rough waters out there for republicans right now facing these missterms. in their districts, president trump still quite popular among red-state republicans. >> very much so. but you have this issue,

day when the fbi raided his home, his office and the hotel room. we're talking about michael cohen, president trump's personal attorney, for years. so, i called him up and that day he gave me the details. >> reporter: overnight, michael cohen spotted leaving dinner in new york city. speaking out for the first time about that raid on his home, office and hotel less than two days ago. cohen telling abc news the fbi agents didn't storm into his hotel room. they simply knocked. he described the operation as respectful and courteous. cohen says it was clear the raid wasn't a personal vendetta. but admits it was very difficult for his family. the agents seized electronic devices, phones and financial documents dating back to 2013. a source who saw the search warrant telling abc news cohen is being investigated for possible bank and wire fraud after that $130,000 payment to

tasks. >> no, no. one more thing. we give them positivity. >> let's go. >> reporter: that was the same year of her whirlwind promotional tour for her feature film "glitter," which fizzled in the box office, and even rumors of an alleged suicide attempt which her team has denied in the past. she spoke about her nonstop lifestyle on "the view." >> i never took a break. i never learned how to just put myself before my career. i just didn't. i just started making records basically right out of high school and never stopped. >> reporter: now carey says she's receiving various forms of treatment to cope including medication, saying i'm exercising, getting acupuncture, eating healthy, spending quality time with my kids and doing what i love which is writing songs and making music. ♪ i can't make it through the rain ♪ >> reporter: despite her sometimes tough journey the music powerhouse is finding her inner strength with a positive

bipolar disorder that she would -- that her career would be over. >> she didn't get medicated. >> she did not. >> so 20 years, why -- >> almost. >> why is she now coming out today now? >> so she -- as you say, she had -- she went through the hardest couple of years she's been through and i think -- we saw some of that -- there was a brief engagement, there was an e! reality show and there was some professional upheaval and i think finally she got to a place where she decided, i need to get help. and so she's recently been treated. she's in therapy. she's on medication that's working very well. and she got to a place where she was able to talk about it. she made peace with it and also she just didn't want to have this secret hanging over her because part of the struggle over the past few years that she was so afraid that somebody in her orbit was going to tell this story for her and so she took the opportunity to tell the story herself. she was very inspired by other people who talked about mental

he's the stand-up comedian known for his role in the hit hbo sitcom "silicon valley." >> well, now the real work begins. >> reporter: but this morning, t.j. miller is in trouble with the feds after allegedly calling in a false report of a bomb on an amtrak train last month. the fbi arresting him monday night when he landed at new york's laguardia airport. tmz obtaining video of what the website claims is that arrest saying that's miller seen here in a baseball cap. fbi agents all around him. the criminal complaint says miller was on an amtrak heading from d.c. to connecticut in mid-march when he called 911 to report that a female passenger has a bomb in her bag. authorities acting quickly stopping this train in connecticut. passengers posting photos as they were forced off the train while police searched it. according to court documents, witnesses with him on the train said miller appeared intoxicated acting belligerent and that he

and a female passenger engaged in a screaming match before he allegedly knowingly intentionally and falsely made an emergency 911 call to law enforcement accusing her of carrying a bomb. >> t.j. miller is in a lot of trouble. there's no defense in the law for being intoxicated or making a prank. >> reporter: heavy drinking is something miller often joked about on stage like at this performance on comedy central back in 2008. >> i drank until i pass out. in college every time i drank i would pass out like every single -- it's like my thing, you know. >> reporter: the 36-year-old no stranger to controversy, he was sued in 2016 by an uber driver who claims miller assaulted him. that case settled in march. and miller appeared in court tuesday. he was released on $100,000 bond. he has not responded to our request for comment. >> this is not funny. it's no joking matter. he could face some serious jail time. >> oh, big time, because police don't take this lightly. this is a very serious charge. he could face up to five years

i just texted him and his reply, why would you even ask me that question. so, take from that what you will. with regard to the conversation we had about the fbi raids on his home, office and hotel room, well, he told me there was no fbi s.w.a.t. team with guns drawn when they arrived at his hotel room. he described the operation as respectful and courteous. they didn't tear up his property and just leave. cohen told me it was clear the raid wasn't a personal vendetta but admits it was very difficult for his family. now, the agents seized electronic device, phones and financial documents date gz back to 2013, and a source who saw the search warrant said he is being investigated for possible bank and fire fraud after that $130,000 payment we've been talking about to porn star stormy daniels paying for her silence as you remember just 11 days before the election. george. >> that's right. he has been one of the president's closest aides, loyal counsel for years. michael. now the breaking news, house speaker paul ryan announcing he

won't seek re-election, his last term after nearly 20 years in the house. he said to be clear he's not resigning he will finish his term. mary bruce is back with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the house speaker just told reporters here he leaves with having regrets. he said this was a personal decision, he wants the spend more time with his family and his young children. he shot down the suggestion he's leaving because democrats may take back the house. >> the economy is strong. i have ever confidence that i'll be handing this gavel on to next republican speaker of the house next year. >> reporter: michael, this decision could have serious implications on those midterm elections. already we have seen a record number of republicans announce they're retiring or not seeking re-election. but michael, paul ryan said he's sticking around through november. >> all right, thank you so much, mary. robin.

now to a combative opening statement at the bill cosby sexual assault retrial. defense attorneys taking aim at cosby's accuser. abc's linsey davis is at the courthouse in norristown with more. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. lots of tension and drama inside this courthouse yesterday. for the first time we heard the defense call andrea constand a con artist. it was a powerful opening statement by bill cosby's lead attorney tom mesereau who says constand's former roommate asked if she had been really sexually assaulted and she said no but could say she was in order to get money. she accuses him of sexual assault at his pennsylvania home back in 2004. cosby has maintained all along that the encounters were consensual. we also heard from the first of five additional cosby accusers expected to take the stand. heidi thomas accuses cosby of sexually assaulting her when she was a 24-year-old aspiring actress.

she says she had one sip of wine that cosby gave her and that she became sick and the next thing she remembers is the comedian forcing himself on her. cosby has denied all of the allegations against him. the cross-examination of thomas is expected to continue this morning. robin. >> and linsey, how has the defense changed strategy from the first trial? >> reporter: so, the first time around they really were attacking constand's inconsistencies. in addition to doing that, this time they're also attacking her character describing her as greedy, as desperate for money and in debt. they even describe her as having a ponzi scheme while she was at temple university and said cosby was her jackpot. >> all right, linsey, we'll see what happens today. thank you. coming up, parents posting shaming videos on facebook to curb their kids' bad behavior. could it backfire? and mariah carey opening up about her battle with bipolar disorder and how to recognize the symptoms and how you treat it. and lara, what's going on

story of one father whose video post went viral and he says it worked for him. >> welcome to you better listen to your dad 2018. >> reporter: you may be seeing it more and more. parents using social media to curb their child's bad behavior. >> this is a healthy way for a child to be punished. >> reporter: bryan thornhill's facebook live video of his 10-year-old son running a mile to school in the rain as he drove slowly behind him went viral last month. >> this right here is just old school simple parenting. >> reporter: the 33-year-old father of two said he decided on the punishment when his son was suspended from the school bus for misbehaving and bullying one of his classmates. >> he was being a little bully which i do not tolerate. i cannot stand. >> reporter: this georgia mom's post went viral after she made her 13-year-old son shop for clothes at goodwill after she says he was developing a sense of entitlement. >> feeling like he's better than the other kids at school because he gets name brand things and

just making like snarky, rude, underlying remarks. >> reporter: both parents in these cases say the posts weren't part of the punishment and were not meant to humiliate their kids and they say they also asked permission from their kids before posting. but some question whether sharing these moments online can hurt a child's self-esteem. some parents say disciplinary actions have to grow with the times. >> since he's been running to school this week his behavior is much better. >> you can be a parent for 18 years and raise your children for 18 years. after that you can be a friend for the rest of their life. >> i don't know if i changed my son forever but i know that i will never sit back and watch him or any child, you know, bully or try to bully another child. >> reporter: for "good morning america," erielle reshef, abc news, new york. we're joined now by dr. david anderson from the child mind institute. doc, thanks so much for being here with us. [ applause ] yes, give it up for the doc. he'll give us good advice.

parents posting videos disciplining their kid, good idea or bad idea? >> that's the thing. disciplining your kids is a good idea. the issue is the public shaming. even as it was saying that these parents asked for consent from their kids, this stuff lives forever and kids don't necessarily know the consequences. even if you ask your kid if it's okay, it's still public shaming and still akin to cyberbullying your child at some level. >> what does it do if you post a video of you disciplining your kid. what does that do? >> the issue is shaming a child usually leads to resentment and a little bit of oppositionalty. if a boss publicly shames you you're looking for a new job, the issue is that shame isn't a good motivator of behavior. the other piece we want to think about is for kids who are anxious or who had a trauma history or are already getting bullied, this can make them more vulnerable. >> for parents, what's the better alternative? >> setting boundaries for kids is good.

it's just that it's only one side of the coin. so the research indicates we want parents to still keep open communication with their kids, a supportive relationship and also promote positive behavior. so in that example with the bus, having the kid run to school may be the punishment but that's only one side of it. after that we need to know what the clear expectations are for the bus and we need to have adults helping that kid to practice positive social skills with the other kids on the bus to ensure bullying doesn't continue. >> communication with your kids, talking it out with them. letting them understand why they're being punished. >> it's seems like common sense but it's hard. >> it really is. if common sense were common, everybody would have it. >> right. >> really appreciate it. >> we'll communicate with george. >> thank you for that blast of common sense. we'll move on to that revelation from mariah carey as we told you, she's telling "people" magazine about her battle with bipolar disorder. dr. jen ashton is here. tell us more about this disorder right now. >> yeah. >> explain exactly what it is. >> bipolar disorder is a mood

disorder that is characterized by big swings in your mood, your energy and activity level, and if you look at the juxtaposition here, there's manic episodes where someone feels really up with an increased activity level. maybe they're not sleeping during the night and feel superproductive, and then a depressive episode where they feel down or have a decrease, the opposite energy level, and the key, george, is that cycling. so, if someone has a manic episode, the theory is in some period of time they will eventually fall down to have a depressive episode and it's the closeness of that cycling that really determines those swings. >> are there treatments to even things out? >> there are. and this is not one size fits all but the mainstay of treatment is medication. then there's things like cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, educating the patient about how to recognize their own symptoms so they can get good treatment. electroconvulsive therapy could be a good option for those who can't tolerate medicine and sleep therapy and being deprived from sleep can create its own

set of problems. >> when mariah was first diagnosed she didn't get treated in part perhaps because of the whole stigma attached, but this may help lift that. >> absolutely. and we have to remember, with mental illness and bipolar disorder in particular, there is no shame in this game. mariah did not come forward really to seek good treatment for herself. and that is not uncommon, and if you think someone with a celebrity with all her resources can be, you know, stigmatized and held back think what the average person goes through. so there's been a lot of data that people have discrimination at work, in their social arenas and so this is something we need to get past. >> with treatment the prognosis is good? >> yeah, the key with the prognosis, george, is that when people are feeling good with bipolar disorder they're much more likely to discontinue or stop their medication and, again, if you go back to that cycling, the key is to keep someone in that middle range where they're the most stable. >> more good advice. thanks very much. let's go to rob. >> hey, george, we often show video of animals during our "gma" moment. today is national pet day so we want to shine the spotlight on these cuties. >> oh. >> come on.

[ cheers and applause ] hey. how you doing, dwayne? >> ah, i'm doing so good. my brother, i'm doing so good. thank you for having me on. always good to be on with my "gma" ohana and the audience live. thank you. >> you're joining us from london. you have this u.s. love coming your way right now and, you know, you have a big movie coming out and you have a new baby on the way. how are you feeling, man? >> i know. you know, i'm feeling so good and so blessed. we have a very large contingency plan being over here because the due date is april 25th but, you know, momma lauren has been having some braxton hicks contractions and many of the ladies and men know what that is

so i'm on standby ready to jump on the plane. everybody is ready to go at a moment's notice so i have talked with our little baby daughter and said stay in momma's belly. give me two more days. >> how is jasmine feeling about having a new sibling on the way? >> you know what, you know, so we like a lot of parents 0 out there, we have been conditioning jasmine. you know, you're going to have a little baby sister and you're going to feed your baby sister so she was great the whole time and just probably about three, four weeks ago out of the blue during breakfast watching cartoons took a bite of her cereal and looks up and goes, i don't want a baby sister. nice. >> jasmine is absolutely beautiful. i mean they showed a picture of her. she's a beautiful girl and we love you here, man so we bought you a gift. we don't want jasmine to feel left out. a onesie and we have something

for jasmine as well. the t-shirt there for jasmine. status best sister ever. we have to make sure jasmine feels included. [ applause ] >> that's so good. thank you guys so much. thank you. >> now, your "rampage" co-star jeffrey dean morgan was here the other day. he said he took his kids to the premiere, son gus and his son thought he was cool until he met you. [ laughter ] >> you know, i had a chance to meet jeffrey dean's little boy and he was a great kid. you know, jeffrey said the same thing, my son thought i was cool until he met you but i got to tell you this, one of the best parts about meeting jeffrey dean's boy is i see him. he comes out and he's like, that was the best movie ever and you're way bigger than my dad. good. >> well, we're going to take a look at a clip of the best movie ever right now.

here you are in action in "rampage." >> it's okay. george, george, george, easy. uh-huh. okay. okay. very funny. very funny. we're all very impressed. yes, yes, you and i laughing at your joke, okay. new guy, he no laugh. he cry. yeah. yeah. opposite of laugh. [ applause ] >> we just -- in that clip it shows that your relationship with george is at the heart of this movie. why is that so important for people to see? >> well, i think, you know, with a movie like this, "rampage" is a big fun movie. it's a popcorn movie. it's three gigantic monsters running around trying to eat me and naomie harris and jeffrey dean morgan and it had to be rooted with an anchor and the --

and the anchor was this relationship between me and my best friend, george. and in the movie i rescue george when he's a baby and his parents were, unfortunately, killed by poachers. i run an anti-poaching unit out of rwanda and we become very close and have this awesome relationship as you guys just saw, so it was the kind of anchor that we needed for a big, you know, movie like this and i was very, very happy with it. it was amazing too just this whole process because i was age to spend time with primatologists and gorillas, specifically a silverback named taz down at the atlanta zoo and spent time down there studying their emotions and behaviors and with diane fosse foundation the pre-eminent worldwide leader of conservation. it was an amazing process and happy we anchored it in that relationship. >> we are too. a lot need to see that u -- too.

any new challenges in the movie when it came to stunts? >> well, yeah, i was -- fortunately i was already coming off a movie, i think it was "fast and furious" so i was kind of in shape but it was really -- this was the physical -- the most physically demanding role i had ever done in my career going on about 18 years now so i've had a few barbecues in my life in hollywood and this one was really physically demanding because there was just -- there's so much calamity and so much destruction and so much -- then, of course, there's a lot of humor in the movie but three gigantic monsters and they're coming after you so you are you're constantly trying to survive and, of course, i'm trying to save my best friend so very physically demanding role. >> we have a feeling you will save the day because you always do and thank you for joining us from london. in honor of you i'm going to have some tea and crumpets in honor of you being in london, my friend.
