ca an ohio state trooper's dash cam was recording when a driver ran a stop sign and the car went flying about 15 feet into the air. witnesses say it traveled nearly the length of a football field. the airborne car cut off some treetops before landing in a front yard. believe it or not, the driver was not seriously injured. missouri's attorney general and other state politicians are calling for the governor, a republican governor there to step down after graphic new reports of an admitted affair with his hairstylist. >> the woman testified eric greitens physically abused her. and according to the report, the woman claimed he threatened to release a partially-naked picture of her if she told anyone about their affair. the governor denied the allegations. >> i want to say again what i have said from the beginning. this is a political witch hunt.

>> the governor did not testify before the committee, which is considering whether lawmakers should begin impeachment proceedings. and prosecutors in los angeles are considering a criminal case against actor kevin spacey. >> the case involves a man who accused spacey of assaulting him in 1992. he is also under investigation for similar accusations in massachusetts and london. no comment so far from his spokesperson. more than a dozen men have now accused the two-team oscar winner of sexual misconduct. and david copperfield may be forced to reveal some of his closely held secrets. >> gavin cox was plucked from the audience years ago for an act. he tripped and suffered a traumatic brain injury. copperfield is expected to be asked in court about how the illusion is done. copperfield's attorney denies the allegation.

good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." calling it quits, paul ryan is retiring after two decades in congress saying he wants to spend more time with his kids. what does this mean for republicans as the crucial midterm elections approach. mike pence leaves today to attend the summit of the americas in peru. president trump was originally planning to be at the summit but decided to stay in washington to oversee the possible military attack against syria. the pope is now inviting abuse victims to rome so he can personally apologize. and the rockies and padres cleared the benches after san diego's pitcher threw behind the batter, and that was just the

start. last night the yankees and red sox went at it after a pitch hit tyler austin. a total of eight were ejected. and those are some of our top stories on this thursday, april 12th. from abc news, this is "world news now." quite a fight. >> fight night. >> exciting baseball. >> geez. >> fight night there. let's start with capitol hill, and that stunning announcement from house speaker paul ryan who's stepping down as republicans get ready for a possible power shift in congress. >> last night ryan attended a white house dinner hours after saying he will not seek another term. you can see him there with president trump and other leaders with two of his possible successors. >> reporter: in a surprise announcement, speaker paul ryan announced that he's done with congress.

>> i'm announcing that this year will be my last one as a member of the house. >> reporter: this ahead of a tough midterm election that could have landed him the title minority leader. his wisconsin seat isn't necessarily safe for republicans, reminding that he never sought the title that placed him third in line to the president. >> you all know that i did not seek this job. i took it reluctantly. but i have given this job everything that i have. and i have no regrets whatsoever for having accepted this responsibility. >> reporter: president trump tweeting that he's a good man and will, quote, leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question. his biggest achievement? tax reform. >> that's something i've been working on my entire adult life. >> reporter: but he's also struggled with a very fractured republican party and frequently dealt with blows from the president, most recently, when trump threatened to veto the omnibus. >> i think everybody will start jockeying for position immediately.

they won't wait for nine months. >> reporter: house speaker paul ryan is the most prominent republican to announce he's retiring, but he's not the only one. 23 other republicans have announced they won't be running as well. >> he announced the desire to spend more time with his family. >> but he may be jumping ship just as the political tide is turning. we get insight from rick klein. good morning. >> house speaker paul ryan is getting out ahead of the gathering political storm, opting to retire than face the voters for another term. but he is not avoiding the turbulence that will afflict so many of his colleagues in an election that could very easily flip control to the democrats. his own seat could be one that

flips to democrats. a record number of retirements giving democrats possibilities. there may be more retirements. and the message could be that republican leaders think that the house is already lost. that fulfills upon itself and is a tough scenario for republicans as they face down what was already going to be a very difficult year. a lame duck speaker who is facing all the political cross currents that happen in the trump era will be more hard-pressed to make sure that the trains run on time. it is telling that president trump who came in as an anti-paul ryan figure against the establishment and so much of the established order of washington will still be there when paul ryan is done. paul ryan was brought in to try to bring order to a chaotic house of representatives and leaves a washington more chaotic than ever. >> such a positive outlook there on the end. interesting times in d.c. here. thanks to rick there.

we turn now to word of a new plan to cripple the russia investigation, reportedly floated by ousted white house chief strategist steve bannon. he wants the president to fire rod rosenstein. stop cooperating completely with robert mueller and exert executive privilege. but the president is said to be still very angry with bannon. so it's unclear if he'd be open to any of those suggestions. president trump is telling syria and its ally, russia, to get ready for u.s.-led military strike against syria. some russian officials say a u.s. attack will be viewed as a war crime. we get more now from maggie rulli. >> reporter: a missile attack on syria now seems inevitable. but russia threatened to shoot down any missiles fired on its ally, syria. president trump tweeting, get ready, russia, because they will be coming nice and new and smart. you shouldn't be partners with a gas-killing animal who kills his people and enjoys it. but despite those tweets, the white house insists no decisions have been made.

ships sailing out of the base in syria. a series of women who claim bill cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them have not held back on the witness stand. one who claims cosby molested her in 1986 attempted to address cosby directly, asking, quoting, you remember, don't you, mr. cosby. other accusers have called him a serial rapist. it's the height of spring break season in cancun, but the city is grappling with violence. the highest ever number of murders ever recorded. it is blamed on mexican gangs battling for turf. more than 100 people have been murdered in cancun this year and most of those cases remain unsolved. and today israel is marking its annual holocaust remembrance day.

officials in boston are investigating officials in boston are investigating why this fire engine's ladder collapsed onto an apartment building. the ladder extended about 70 feet before it broke in four pieces. no one was hurt in either the ladder collapse or the fire. the boston fire department says the fire engine is 12 years old but has undergone extensive preventive maintenance. and a funeral service is set this morning for the first of 16 people killed in a hockey bus crash in canada. >> tyler bieber was the radio broadcaster for the humboldt broncos, the team athletic therapist became the 16th person to die from her injuries just yesterday. the team was heading to a playoff game when a tractor-trailer slammed into their bus in saskatchewan.

and a new legal battle around usa gymnastics. they are suing insurance carriers for defense costs from lawsuits by victims of former sports dr. larry nassar. no comment from any of the insurance companies. michigan residents from flint traveled to the state capital to demand clean drinking water. they disrupted a legislative session a day after the last distribution site for free water was shut down. many people were sickened four years ago when flint switched its water-source. residents are not convinced the water is safe. >> we're letting them know, despite the fact that it's four years into this lead crisis it is still a crisis. we are still concerned about the contents in our water. >> organizers say they will continue to hold demonstrations until all the lead pipes in flint are replaced. >> scary scenario. >> it's really, really expensive

>> the president has not laid out a time table and still leaving a number of other options on the table. >> reporter: the president's tone towards russia has taken a sharp turn, from never criticizing to declaring, quote, our relationship with russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the cold war. but he offered a surprising reason. tweeting, quote, much of the bad blood with russia is caused by the fake and corrupt russia investigation. isn't it russia's support for what the president himself calls a gas-killing animal or its meddling in our elections or its military intervention in ukraine, aren't those the actions that have caused bad blood? >> it's both of those things. neither one of those things are good for our country. certainly, the things that you listed off as well as the investigation are all things that have hurt that relationship. >> robert mueller's actions are similar to -- >> i didn't say that. you're certainly putting words into my mouth. i said both of those things are bad for america. that's all i said.

ryan reluctantly accepted the speaker position in 2015 but says he has no regrets and expressed pride in his accomplishments, such as helping to push through the massive tax cuts. he's only 48 years old. he says he wants to spend more time with his family. >> my dad died when i was 16, the age my daughter is. and i just don't want to be one of those people looking back at my life thinking i should have spent more time with my kids, when i know if i had another term they would only know me as a weekend father. >> he will remain on the job until january. kevin mccarthy and steve scalise are considered the top contenders to replace him. former aide steve bannon wants president trump to fire deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. he wants him to stop cooperating with robert mueller and exert executive privilege. but the president is said to be still angry with bannon. so it's unclear if he'll be open to those suggestions.
