i'm pretty sure the nba summer league, 32-year-old nba rookie andre ingram. ten years in the making to become that rookie on the lakers and he ended the season on a high note, with a win, and we'll talk to him about his big nba debut live today. >> looking forward to that. but first, that breaking news overnight. new evidence of a third secret payment to protect president trump during his campaign. a former trump tower doorman was also paid off by "the national enquirer," and there are new details on the fbi raid on trump's personal lawyer michael cohen and they seized documents related to that infamous "access hollywood" tape. abc's kyra phillips is in washington with the latest. good morning, kyra. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, we have learned this morning that a former trump tower doorman received hush money from ami, the parent of "the national enquirer," after he went to them with this salacious story about trump, third secret deal involving president trump's personal attorney, michael cohen, and the fbi wants to know all the details. according to this just-released
7:03 am
report in "the new yorker" ami, which owns "the national enquirer," paid a doorman, dino sajudin who worked at trump tower $30,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement after he offered the company a salacious story about then-candidate trump during the 2016 election. eight months later, "the national enquirer" paid $150,000 to former "playboy" playmate karen mcdougal after she claimed she had an affair with trump. both of these contracts prevented sajudin and mcdougal from going public with information that could have hurt trump's campaign for president. the parallel between the two stories raised new questions about the role "the enquirer," and trump's personal attorney, michael cohen, may have played in protecting his image during the election. cohen seen leaving a restaurant yesterday uncharacteristically
7:04 am
quiet. >> why do you think they raided your office and hotel room? >> reporter: had his office, hotel and home raided by the fbi earlier this week. prosecutors are probing whether cohen broke finance or campaign laws in connection with ami's payment to mcdougal as well as cohen's own $130,000 payment to porn star stormy daniels. money he says he paid out of his own pocket by taking out a home equity loan. and we pushed the story even further. we have learned that monday's early morning raid was a hunt for evidence of potential election violations, george. and michael cohen's personal finances. investigators want to know if there were secret deals made outside the campaign to protect donald trump. >> that is becoming clear. kyra, thanks very much. robin? george, now to the latest on the white house reaction to those raids, and if president trump will attempt to fire special counsel robert mueller
7:05 am
or the deputy attorney general. let's bring in abc news senior white house correspondent cecilia vega, and that "access hollywood" tape may now be the center of the investigations, cecilia. >> reporter: yeah, robin, you remember this. that tape was among the lowest moments of the trump campaign and here we are 14 months into this presidency and they are still having to answer questions about it. this white house says the president has, quote, deep concerns about the direction that the special counsel is taking, but, even though this raid on cohen's office is separate and done by the fbi, the president and his allies all see it as very much connected. we know the president is furious. sources are telling us that aides here are in full-on crisis mode, staffers are just beaten down by this constant onslaught of questions. the president is tweeting this morning, take a look. he's pushing back on a "new york times" report saying, if i wanted to fire robert mueller in december, i would have fired him. now, in the past the white house
7:06 am
has made it very clear, despite the president's private musings, they said he had no plans to fire him. now when asked, sarah sanders says, robin, we have no personnel announcements. >> that is a difference. thank you. george. i'm here now with ronan farrow of "the new yorker" who broke that story this morning, and also our chief legal analyst, dan abrams, and let's start. this is a pretty complicated story. no evidence of the underlying story "the national enquirer" was trying to stop is true. yet, they still tried to stop it. why? >> correct. and multiple ami sources told us that in and of itself seems suspicious to them. that they went to such extraordinary lengths to bury a story that seemed in the view of a lot of people involved in this investigation baseless. you know, this was a person relaying secondhand information there was an affair, possibly a child resulting from an affair. again, no hard evidence at all, and yet they paid a very large sum. we now know that was part of a pattern of the payments. >> the pattern is the issue for the investigators. we know they're looking at the payoffs to stormy daniels and karen mcdougal. we know they're looking at the "access hollywood" tape and we know they're looking at this.
7:07 am
what were the underlying crimes here? potentially. >> well, look, i think -- they're looking at michael cohen as far as we know right now, and it's important to distinguish sometimes, michael cohen from donald trump as much as we want to put them together. so, look, the most obvious is potential campaign finance violations which is basically, if you are protecting someone by paying money, giving money and the purpose of it, the purpose of it is to aid the campaign, that's the hard part to prove, if you can show that, then there's a potential campaign finance violation. the other issue is potential bank fraud meaning, what was being reported to the banks in connection with this money, et cetera. and i think that's why they're looking at all of this together. >> and who knows once they go into the files what they find. >> absolutely. and -- but i think that you have to believe that it's about more than just a campaign finance violation. it's hard to believe that they would be going in with guns blazing in this way only over campaign finance.
7:08 am
>> another twist in the story right here, david pecker, a longtime friend of donald trump, we know that. it also appears that there was you scratch my back i'll scratch yours, including a meeting in the white house that david had last summer. >> well, look, i'll be careful to stick to what we reported. which is just, yes, that meeting happened. multiple outlets reported that. yes, multiple sources close to this investigation that was buried involving this doorman said they believe this was part of a transactional relationship. you know, i would say the most important point here is, george, this is another example of a system used by men of a certain amount of power and wealth to silence stories about them of all kinds, and now this is applying to a guy in the white house, but it's very much the same playbook that we saw in the weinstein story including many of the same individuals, dylan howard, "national enquirer," all players we exposed being involve in that weinstein story. >> "national enquirer" is a media company. will they have some kind of first amendment defense against
7:09 am
this investigation or any charges? >> they have a first amendment rights, the way any other media entity has first amendment rights. the question is, were they using them simply to eliminate stories and not publish stories? if that -- >> for business reasons. >> well, if you can demonstrate that they are basically doing this just to not publish stories, they may lose some of the press protections that they would ordinarily have, but that's tough to prove. it's going to be tough to prove because their position is, look, we paid for these stories because we wanted them and then we decided later on that we didn't want to publish it. now that's our editorial judgment. disproving that is tricky and so you still have to go into this at first blush, treating them as any other media organization would be treated. >> and what are you hearing from inside? >> well, that's exactly the thing. multiple, multiple sources who were directly involved in this investigation saying, yeah, maybe the underlying claim wasn't true but the way in which it was shut down was suspicious and newsworthy, including by the way adding after the fact, a

million-dollar penalty if this guy ever breathed a word about this. >> meantime, clearest statement yet from the president that he has the authority to fire robert mueller. >> he has the authority to fire robert mueller. we talked about this. it's just a question of the logistics of exactly how he would go about doing it, but there is no doubt that if president trump wants to fire mueller he can figure out a way to fire robert mueller. >> thank you very much. robin? all right, george. now to the showdown over syria. president trump warning u.s. air strikes will be coming in retaliation for that suspected chemical attack. now, new reports of negotiations with russia. so let's go to abc chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz in washington for us. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the u.s., french and british military are all getting into position. their warplanes and ships and possibly submarines are just waiting for the word with president trump tweeting about timing just moments ago. this morning, the u.s. military awaits the president's final decision on exactly when and

from cyprus, trump's promised response in retaliation for that suspected chemical weapons attack in douma last weekend. new images posted by activists showing an unexploded barrel bomb which they say contained chemicals. assad has called the images fake but this morning the syrian military is increasing its defensive posture and repositioning warplanes. the syrians are moving their equipment to areas where the russians have aircraft thinking those sites will not be hit and this morning, putin's spokesman confirms that the de-confliction line between russia and the u.s. remains open with a russian newspaper claiming secret talks with the u.s. to try to get coordinates for sites that may be targeted so russian aircraft won't be hit. but none of this has stopped russia from conducting naval exercises off the coast of syria as a show of force, robin. >> but what about repositioning

syrian aircraft and a heads-up that a strike would be coming, does that complicate things? >> reporter: well, it does, but the syrians had to know this would happen when chemical weapons were used and whether they move them or not, the pentagon is tracking their every move and will know where to find them, robin. >> all right, martha, thank you. michael? thank you, robin. now to the race to replace house speaker paul ryan. ryan announced yesterday he will not seek re-election. the speaker meeting with president trump and gop leaders last night. abc's senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, michael. well, the jockeying here is already under way for who will be the next speaker of the house. this morning all eyes are on ryan's number two, kevin mccarthy, and the majority whip steve scalise. both of them were at the dinner at the white house with the president last night. while the president has said he wishes ryan well he has not said who he would like to see as next speak ever of the house. ryan has some ideas on who he
7:14 am
would like to be his replacement but he's also staying mum for now and, remember, he is still speaker. ryan says he plans to stay in the position through the end of this term, but he may possibly have to leave even sooner if members decide they want to speed this process along. or, michael, this entire debate could be for nothing. if republicans lose the house in november, democrats will then be the ones filling the speaker's seat, and as for what comes next for paul ryan, right now he says he has no plan to ever run for elected office again. including for president, but, michael, he isn't ruling it out and that is a classic political response. >> yeah, and there's a lot of speculation out there that if something happens with president trump and he doesn't run again that paul ryan might take another look at it. >> i guess it's the never say never and thank you to mary for that. >> you got that, michael. now to a dramatic moment in the bill cosby trial. the defense demanding a mistrial after one of cosby's accusers directly addressed him from the stand. abc's linsey davis was in the courtroom and joins us now from norristown, pennsylvania.
7:15 am
good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it was a one, two, three punch. we heard from three cosby accusers inside the courthouse yesterday. one of them clinging to a handkerchief throughout her entire testimony. at times she sobbed. she says that she was an aspiring model and that in 1986 at just 17 years old bill cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her. through tears, she looked at him from the witness stand and said, you know what you did, don't you, mr. cosby? it was at that point the defense moved for a mistrial. the judge denied that request. now, she is the same accuser who the defense pointed out was convicted of giving a false statement in 2007 to police in an unrelated matter. what all three had in common they claim they were drugged then sexually assaulted by the now 80-year-old comedian but it is opening arguement, his attorney said keep your eye on the ball. describing all these other witnesses as distractions.
