a horrific crash this morning, a car flies offer the cliff crashing into the rocks below and a man was able to survive. it's a stunning rescue. thank you for joining us. i'm jessica castro. first responders were able to pull the man to safety after tense moments. as huge waves came dangerously close to the driver, all happened about 8:00 this morning off highway 1. it's in an area known as devil's slide. abc 7 news reporter amy

hollyfield was there as the man was rescued. >> reporter: hi, jessica, no one out here can believe he survived the plunge off of this cliff. this man had all the luck on this friday, the 13th. so what happened was let me show you the cliff, look behind me. went flying off this cliff. they don't know why. they estimate he fell about 150 feet and landed in the ocean of the he was able to get himsel out of the car and swim or climb over to the rocks and wait for rescuers to repel down to him. they estimate he was down there for about an hour and a half. the luckiest part for him, not only he survived, of course, but

someone witnessed him going off the cliff. rescuers say when they reach a car that crashed, it's been there for hours, if not days because no one witnessed it because this is such a remote area, but someone saw him go over and got down to him in an hour an and a half, the man complained about being cold. they say he was suffering, but the neck and back were okay, did not complain of pain. hard to believe. miraculous given what he experienced. they took him to the hospital to get him checked out but say he's in fair condition. at this time, rescue crews at the scene did not know his age or hometown. they say there was a bit of a language barrier or perhaps because he was suffering that they were not able to communicate with him, but he was walking and talking, able to walk to the ambulance and get into it. quite a miracle. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. as we saw, the live images behind amy, you see how high up

the cliffs are, and here's the closer look as that man was pounded with the water as rescuers were getting to him. tense moments there, and, finally, he got his way up to firefighters and pulled him up. that huge cliff there highway 1 for safety, and just amazing he's able to stand there and was only suffering minor injuries. we'll have all that, you're able to see the rescue as it happened on abc 7news.com as well as our abc 7 news app. we posted a video showing those key moments, very dramatic efforts to save that driver. moving on now, at noon today, in just a few minutes, the highway patrol and the sheriff's office will hold a news conference to reveal new information about the southern california family that plunged into a river last week. the family vanished while driving from portland, oregon to san jose. searchers found items alongside the river in the county, and

relatives have confirmed those items did belong to the missing family. the eel river runs fast as they look for the bodies once the water is calmer. this midday, we are getting the first look at the mountain view police department's encounter with the youtube shooting suspect the morning of the attack. mountain view pd released this video a short time ago including the officer worn camera footage as well as dispatch radio traffic. she was found sleeping in her car 1:40, april 3rd after being missing from the family and told the officer she had no plans to go home. >> you don't want to hurt yourself? you don't want to hurt anybody else? you don't want to commit suicide or anything like that, right? okay. >> she says she drove straight to mountain view from san diego because she was starting to -- wanted to start a new life, and then just hours later, police say she went on a shooting

rampage at yooush headquarters injuring three before turning the gun on herself. sheriff deputies say a taxi driver is in custody after being involved in a hit-and-run that sent a woman to the hospital with some major injuries. this accident happened just after 5:00 this morning at the corner of el camino real and silva avenue. the taxi was found two miles away in a car wash. the driver was taken into custody at the scene. there's extra security now at the junior high school after police got a tip about a suspicious man lurking in the area. police got a tip saying an older male was trying to pick up children near the school. the suspect at 5'10", bald, wearing a blue shirt and sunglasses reportedly driving a bright red honda civic. if you see anything suspicious in the area, call the police. a controversial game set for tonight in solano county is

under scrutiny right now. they urged parents to discourage kids from taking part in a game called la migra. they play i.c.e. agents and younger students are undocumented immigrants while being chased by people in cars. the annual event is not organized by the school and worried about student safety as well as the offensive nature of the game. happens now, a warning for beach goers this afternoon. huge waves expected and you'll need to be careful going in the water. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in santa cruz with a group of people excited about the high surf. >> reporter: jessica, yes, of course, the surfers. look at the big waves, surfers in the water. look how beautiful, too, sunny, warm, about as good as it gets here in santa cruz in april. the closer you get, the more you have to be careful. i bet you didn't realize there was so much running in surfing, but when the winter waves are

>> reporter: there he is in the red sweatshirt walking and talking. hard to believe looking at this. this is the van he was in. he was driving it when it plunged off this cliff on highway 1 falling about 150 feet into the ocean. >> he was hype thermic being in the water being down there, able to extra kate himself and walk and claimed no injuries, but he was evaluated by the paramedics. >> reporter: look at this video, waiting on the rocks to be rescued. he was anyone to climb out of the car and over to the rocks. a rescuer repelled down to him while the coast guard watched from up above in a helicopter and workers kept watch from jet skis in the harbor and first responders waited on top, they admitted they did not expected this ending. >> frankly, knowing the steepness of the cliffs, i was up certain, and we were very relieved and grateful and thankful that it looks like it's going to be a positive outcome.
