saying the president isn't -- >> she said president trump said from the beginning the united states must have all the information and proof. here now is the president ready to address the . crisis in syria now >> we come on the air because president trump is set to address the nation. as you know, the president has said a military strike could be coming. he has said that earlier in the week and continues to meet with top national security advisers. i want to bring in cecilia vega. we do know the president will be addressing the nation, what else do we know at this point. >> we don't know a lot. we know there is a lot of
6:01 pm
activity here at the white house right now, we are told the vice president were expectedly rushed back to their hotel. so definitely some activity here. this is coming as the president has been criticized for doing exactly what he said he would never do which is broadcasting his attack on syria. he said be ready russia. >> all right. stay with us here as we prepare to hear from the president. we know secretary mattis is at the pentagon. the president addressing the nation from the diplomatic room. >> my fellow americans.

a short time ago i ordered the united states armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of syrian dictator bashar al assad. a combined operation with the armed forces with france and the united kingdom is now underway. we thank them both. tonight i want to speak to you about why we have taken this action. one year ago, assad launched a savage weapons attack against his own innocent people. the united states responded with 58 missile strikes that destroyed 20% of the syrian air force. last saturday, the
6:03 pm
again deployed. this massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons used by that very terrible regime. the evil and the dispickable attack left mothers and fathers, infants and children thrashing in pain and gasping for air. these are not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster instead. following the horrors of world war i a century again, civilized nations joined together to ban chemical warfares. chemical weapons are uniquely dangerous. not only because they inflict
6:04 pm
gruesome suffering, but because even small amounts can release wide spread devastation. the purpose of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons. establishing this deterrent is a vital national security interest of the united states. the combined american british and french response to these atrocities will integrate all instruments of our national power. military, economic, and diplomatic. we are prepared to sustain this response until the syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents. i also have a message tonight for the two governments most responsible for supporting equipping and financing the criminal as ad regime.

to iran and to russia, i ask what kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women, and children. the nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep. no nation can succeed in the long run by promoting rogue states brutal tyrants and murderous dictators. in 2013, president putin and his government promised the world that they would guarantee the elimination of syria's chemical weapons. assad's resecent attacks are result russia not keeping that promise. as a force for stability and
6:06 pm
peace. hopefully someday we will get along with russia and maybe even iran. but maybe not. i will say this, the united states has a lot to offer. with the greatest and most powerful economy in the history of the world, in syria, the united states with but a small force being used to eliminate what is left of isis is doing what is necessary to protect the american people. over the last year, nearly 100% of the territory once controlled by the so-called isis in syria and iraq has been eliminated. we have asked our partners to take greater responsibility for
6:07 pm
securing their home region including contributing large amounts of money for the resources equipment and all of the anti isis effort. increased engagement from our friends including saudi arabia, the united arab emirates. can ensure that iran does not profit. as other nations con tr contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home and great warriors they are. looking around our very troubled world, americans have no allusions. we cannot purge the world of
6:08 pm
evil or act everywhere there is tyranny. no amount of american blood or treasure can produce lasting peace and security in the middle east. it is a troubled place. we will try to make it better but it is a troubled place. the united states will be a partner and a friend, but the fate of the region lies in the hands of its own people. in the last century, we look straight into the darkest places of the human soul. we saw the anguish that can be unleashed and the evil that can take hold. by the end of world war i, more than 1 million people had been killed or injured by chemical weapons. we never want to see that ghast

ghastly expector return. today martialed their power against barbarism and brutality. tonight i ask all americans to say a prayer warriors. we pray that god will continue and watch over and bless united states. thank you and good night. thank you. >> president trump addressing the nation tonight. revealing to the nation we have launched precision strikes on syria. he revealed this is a combined operation of the u.s., uk and france. he talked about president assad

saying this is the crime of a monster. i want to bring in raddatz who has been monitoring this all week. he revealed he is working with allies from the uk and france. >> the words he used where they would two after chemical weapons capability, and i think that could be anything from airfields to aircraft. they believe these chemical weapons were delivered from barrel bonds. one of the things we have been watching this week is how strong an impact it will have. last year, they did bomb that airfield and within days it was working once again. there were airplanes launched. so what they went after tonight,
6:11 pm
we don't know yet. the pentagon will have a press briefing in 45 minutes and fill us in on exactly what was hit and how strong an impact it will have. one of the things that secretary mattis was said yesterday is he said we are concerned we don't add any civilian deaths. we are trying to stop the murder of innocent people. but on a strategic level how do we keep this from escalating out of control and that has been a concern of secretary mattis. he does not want this to escalate. >> let's bring in colonel gander. will this be a specific strike in one location or could this be multiple sites we are looking

6:13 pm
literally within days of the strike. do you gather the strike this time around or series of strikes will be far more potent? >> i think it will have to be. the president says he will make a statement. and the statement he made last time was nothing more than a warning. this time, if you note these rings on the map here, these are rings that represent the maximum effective range of sophisticated missile systems. they tune tdon't know if the ru are going to try to shoot down the allied missiles in flight. so they have had to fly the missiles low to get to their targets in damascus. >> we do not know at this hour if the russians will take counter measures. i want to bring in ian panel

achieve their objective. >> thanks to you. i want to bring in cecilia vega. you have been at the white house all week. earlier this week president trump sent out the tweet saying missiles were coming. he was criticized that he telegraphed to the world what would be coming. there seemed to be a slow down as the week progressed. >> and he was so roundly criticized for doing what he said he would never do which is broadcasting his military plans and seemed to tile that back. earlier this week the president said the decision would be 24-48 hours. and we are now days from that. people watching to see if he would take a hard line against putin. naming him for the first time and calling him out. i have to tell you, all of this
6:16 pm
has been front and center at the white house but comes very much with so many distractions with what they are dealing with right now. this major fight brewing between the president and former fbi director james comey. hard for them to concentrate and focus on syria with all of that going on in the background. >> and yet those strikes have been launched tonight as the president balances all of this. cecilia, our thanks to you as well. president trump addressing the nation revealing to the country that we have launched precision strikes aimed at syria. it is believed that these strikes will be much stronger than the strikes about a year ago. we will wait to see what unfolds tonight. the president did reveal this is the work of the u.s. military and the uk and france. i am david muir reporting f repp
