7:02 am
the transcript getting all those headlines as well and when you talk about twitter it all began with president trump. he was on twitter. you see it up on the wall right there, even before the interview aired last night, calling james comey a slimeball, the worst fbi director in history, a liar. now you can listen to comey and judge for yourself. it was an intense interview. for several hours, james comey, the man who stood at the crossroads of the most divisive election of modern times, addressed his most controversial decisions and delivered a series of jaw-dropping conclusions. do you think the russians have something on donald trump? >> i think it's possible. i don't know. these are more words i never thought i'd utter about the president of the united states, but it's possible. >> reporter: that's stunning. you can't say for certain that the president of the united states is not compromised by the russians. >> yeah, it is stunning and i wish i wasn't saying it but it's just -- it's the truth. it always struck me and still strikes me as unlikely and i would have been able to say with high confidence about any other president i dealt with but i can't. it's possible.
7:03 am
>> reporter: thinking back to his time as a prosecutor investigating the gambino crime family, comey compares trump to a mob boss. >> a distinction of a friend of yours and a friend of ours. i felt this effort to make us all -- maybe it wasn't their intention but i felt that we're all part of the messaging, all part of the effort. the boss is at the end of the table. we're going to figure out together how to do this. >> reporter: how strange is it for you to sit here and compare the president to a mob boss? >> very strange. and i don't do it lightly. and i'm not trying to suggest that president trump is out breaking legs and shaking down shopkeepers, but instead what i'm talking about is that leadership culture constantly comes back to me when i think about my experience with the trump administration. >> reporter: comey explains his thinking on the october surprise that hillary clinton believes cost her the white house. why did he reveal he was re-opening the clinton e-mail investigation?
7:04 am
>> we knew about it. as i assume when you knew about it. >> reporter: he says he had no choice after additional e-mails were found on the computer of anthony weiner, husband of one of clinton's top aides. >> you could try to find out first whether or not they were, indeed, relevant. whether there was evidence there of a crime. >> well, maybe, and maybe another director might have done that. my view is that would be a potentially deeply irresponsible and dangerous thing to do. >> but we don't know what's in it. >> we know there are hundreds of thousands of hillary clinton's e-mails there. that's an affirmative act of concealment. >> reporter: what the public doesn't know at the time is that the fbi is actively investigating the trump campaign and whether members were working with the russians to influence the election. your critics say this is a clear, clear, clear double standard. you revealed information about hillary clinton. you concealed information about donald trump. that elected donald trump. >> take a step back and stare at the two cases and the posture they were in. the hillary clinton e-mail case was public and the

counterintelligence investigations trying to figure out whether a small group of people, not donald trump, we were not investigating donald trump, whether this small group of americans was coordinating anything with the russians. we had just started the investigation, didn't know whether we had anything so it would have been brutally unfair to those people to talk about it and would have jeopardized the investigation. >> reporter: february 14, 2017, in a meeting alone with the president, comey says trump brings up the investigation into mike flynn. his former national security adviser, fired because he lied about contacts with russians. >> and that's when he asked me, said he hopes i can let it go. >> and when he said that, you thought -- >> he's asking me to drop the criminal investigation of his now former national security adviser. >> direction. >> i took it as a direction. his words were, though, i hope you can let it go. i took the expression of hope as this is what i want you to do. >> the president says he didn't say that. >> yeah. what am i going to do? he did.
7:06 am
>> reporter: from this encounter, a startling conclusion. was president trump obstructing justice? >> possibly. it is certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice. >> at some point in your mind, as you're writing these notes, have you shifted to collecting evidence of a possible crime? >> well, yes in a sense. i continued to believe that there was force to the fbi general counsel's argument that we're going to have to look at the president. you're inevitably going to look at his conduct because he's the head of the campaign. >> reporter: as the interview concludes, comey's personal judgments about the president, scathing. you write that president trump is unethical. untethered to the truth. is donald trump unfit to be president? >> yes, but not in the way i often hear people talk about it. i don't buy this stuff about him being mentally incompetent or early stages of dementia. he strikes me as a person of above average intelligence and who's tracking conversations and knows what's going on. i don't think he's medically unfit to be president. i think he's morally unfit to be president.
7:07 am
our president must embody respect and adhere to the values at the core of this country, the most important thing being truth. this president is not able to do that. he is morally unfit to be president. [ chanting ] a person who sees moral equivalence in charlottesville who talks about it and treats women like they're pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the american people believe it, that person is not fit to be president of the united states on moral grounds. >> if you are right, what is the remedy? should donald trump be impeached? >> yeah, i tell you i give you a strange answer, i hope not, because i think impeaching and removing donald trump from office would let the american people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that i believe they're duty bound to do directly. people in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values. values matter. this president does not reflect the values of this country. >> powerful statement there and there were so many jaw-dropping
7:08 am
moments in the interview and you spent several hours with him. >> everything about it is jaw dropping. when you think about it, you take a step back here. there you had an fbi director who is investigating both presidential campaigns, half the country thinks he decided the election. then he's investigating the trump campaign and he gets fired by the president, and now for several hours, unloading like this. again, we have never seen anything like this in our history. >> what surprised you the most? from the interview. >> what didn't surprise me? it was really -- it was really the judgments he came to in the end that he cannot rule out that president trump is compromised by the russians, as i said in the interview, i was stunned by that. i'm stunned by it still. >> and a lot of people didn't know the stance of his wife. >> we'll learn a lot more about her. i think it's one of the things -- she only popped up a little bit in the piece last night, but when you find out that his wife and daughters were all in the march the day after the inauguration, it's something she explains a lot more ab that at 7:30. >> okay, and james comey's book

is out right now. >> tuesday, tomorrow, comes out tomorrow. "a higher loyalty." >> on tuesday. and president trump is also facing new trouble, though, from that fbi raid of his personal attorney, michael cohen's office. the president is now demanding the right to review materials they seized as cohen prepares to head to court today. our chief white house correspondent jonathan karl has more on that. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. late last night, the president's legal team filed an eight-page letter with the court asking to see all of the material seized from cohen by the fbi. they want to see it before the justice department sees it, and the stakes here are incredibly high. the president's legal team is more concerned about what might be in cohen's files than they are even about the mueller investigation. this was a person, cohen, who for more than a decade was the president's fixer, as one person close to the president told abc news. even before the seizure, if there's one person who can bring

down the president it is michael cohen and the president himself is furious about all of this, most recently tweeting, attorney/client privilege is now a thing of the past. i have many -- too many lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even their homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers taken. by the way, robin, at today's hearing michael cohen may come face-to-face with the porn star who started all of this. stormy daniels says she plans to be in court today. >> we'll see what happens. jon, thank you. let's get more from the counselor to the president. kellyanne conway. she joins us live from the white house. kellyanne, thank you for joining this morning. >> hi, george. >> we saw a lot from the president on twitter before the james comey interview. did he watch last night? what's his reaction? >> i spoke with the president before the interview and the president reminded me that jim comey said publicly that he felt nervous before he met the president, admitted that to you. what we don't understand is why, if you're going to meet the president of the united states, the president-elect you're not
7:11 am
saying, my ticker list is i've got to tell him about the russian interference, i must tell him about the investigations that are ongoing. instead, he takes time to talk about the size of his hands and length of his tie. that's really gutter and the fact that mr. comey admitted to you that he allowed polling and politics to influence his decision is much why rod rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, in a scathing memo on may 9th and others, other former attorneys general had called for mr. comey to step aside because they felt like he can no longer hold up the values of the fbi. he admitted to you he purposely leaked information to a friend so that it would get into the media and trigger a special counsel. this guy swung an election. he thought the wrong person would win. his people in his household wanted the other person to win and now at the end of your interview, george, he gave a free political commercial telling people to go out there and vote against the president and his interests. i think he struggled to answer basic questions and he looked a little shaky.
7:12 am
he also -- i really was very struck that when he was meeting with the president, it's three very limited meetings with the president of the united states, i thought to myself, you waited two months as the fbi director to go and meet with the president-elect and then waited nearly a year to tell the country what was on your mind. if he really felt like he was saving the country rather than selling books, why did he wait until an interview with you not under oath and selling a book not under oath? >> well, he actually answered a lot of those questions under oath before the senate judiciary committee last year as well. >> and then they had to correct his testimony. they had to correct his testimony, said there were hundreds of thousands of confidential e-mails on anthony weiner's server and had to correct it that there were a handful. he is an admitted leaker and i think what really strikes people last night is when you have -- we have a private audience with the president, you should use that time to discuss major law enforcement, counterterrorism issues of the day. instead it sounds like he's taking notes for a future book.
7:13 am
>> kellyanne, let me just stop you right there. i've given you a fair amount to throw a lot out on that. first of all, he was saying in that february 14th meeting he did give him a counterintelligence briefing and it was the president who asked him to stand back after asking everyone else to leave the room and that's when the president according to james comey asked him to let the -- said he would hope he would let the flynn investigation go. i know the president has denied that. >> that's right. >> what we have from james comey on all of his encounters are notes, his contemporaneous conversations with others in the fbi. we know that all of that has been given to robert mueller. does the president have any evidence to back up his side of the story? >> i watched him, comey, tell you last night he agreed with the president that mike flynn was a good guy, a good man. the president has made very clear that he never asked anyone to interfere in an investigation. and jim comey had admitted that in testimony that nobody here had ever asked him to drop an investigation for political reasons.
7:14 am
>> actually, kellyanne, i have to stop you there because that is not correct either. what james comey was asked about in the senate was whether the attorney general, anyone at the justice department, ever asked him to stop an investigation. he said no. he was not asked about the president. what he has consistently said about the president is that he took those comments from the president about michael flynn as direction. that has been his consistent story. >> what did he do with it? >> he never changed it. >> what did he do with it? did he run out and tell the attorney general please come in here, i feel uncomfortable? did he call back the vice president? no, this man, jim comey loves to be within the proximity of power and having dinner alone with the president. if he hadn't, he should have invited someone or asked who else was going to be there. he loved being along in the oval office and he wanted a piece of it and he loved being in the proximity of power until he got fired and then wrote a book. let's be very honest. these are high-stakes issues that are going on. this is somebody who admitted to you last night that he leaked information, that the house investigators are looking for those memos.
7:15 am
why does "the new york times" have a right to get the leaked information and not the house -- the house committees who represent all of us? >> kellyanne -- >> what's fair is fair. >> we have to go. i want to go back to my first question. you say you talked to the president before the interview. did he watch the interview and does he have any reaction? >> i think he's aware of some of the excerpts and his reaction is the same as when he saw earlier excerpts. this is somebody who is not under oath in interviews, writing a book and this is somebody who is giving a revisionist version of history. the president hardly knew the man. the president said that and the president answered within days of their interaction in a press conference for all to see. you played the clip last night that he did not ask him to stop any investigation. the president is very confound that this person is always able to divert the spotlight to him, whether it's the july 5th press conference, the october 28th announcement about the hillary clinton income been re-opened. he has a very deft way of making
7:16 am
things about him and he had the fbi department that has 25,000 rank and file men and women who are very honorable, but had those who were against this president and were for hillary clinton and he let that cloud his judgment. >> kellyanne conway, thanks for your time this morning. >> thank you. >> robin. now to barbara bush. the former first lady who is suffering from heart and respiratory failure, has now stopped seeking additional medical treatment. she is surrounded by her family at home. abc's marcus moore is there in houston has the latest for us. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: robin, good morning. those family members started arriving here in houston on wednesday. mrs. bush has been suffering from congestive heart failure and chronic respiratory illness and the family announced that the 92-year-old matriarch will not seek additional medical treatment at a hospital as you said. instead, she will focus on comfort care at home. as you know, the former first lady has been in and out of the hospital for the past several

th and now to our exclusive with espn anchor molly kerim opening up about her private battle with endometriosis. it's a serious condition millions of american women face, it's responsible for half of infertility cases in women, and for molly, it included pain so severe she couldn't get out of bed for days at a time. >> we have a huge show today and we're really fired up. >> reporter: on espn's "first take" co-host molly qerim brings her "a" game to the roundtable. >> did you talk about that a lot. >> reporter: dishing on the hottest news and sports. >> did the cavs make the right moves? >> reporter: but behind the camera the 33-year-old silently struggles with endometriosis. she was first diagnosed seven years ago. >> the endometriosis is not just in my reproductive organs but everywhere, on my liver, on my intestines and essentially why i had that horrific pain was it
8:24 am
had like all compiled into a cyst which burst. and the toxins were all in my body. >> reporter: an estimated one out of ten american women have endometriosis. a condition where tissue that normally grows inside the uterus is found outside it, causing immense abdominal cramping and sometimes infertility. there's no known cure but can be managed with treatment. >> tell me what your options were at that point. >> i was put on lupron so i was getting injections into my backside. pain running down your little and put my body into menopause. i gained a lot of weight and didn't feel myself. mentally, emotionally, physically. >> acupuncture has become a huge source of relief for you. >> uh-huh. acupuncture has been a saving grace. >> i'm going to feel your pulse. >> reporter: molly focusing on self-care turned to the traditional chinese medicine to ease her discomfort. >> the ones on her feet are kind of dealing with the hormonal imbalances that she might have
8:25 am
due to the endometriosis. and then the ones on her stomach too. that is for the pain. >> reporter: revamping her diet also made a huge difference. >> my version of soda, seltzer water. >> i'm a huge fan. cutting out all sugar, alcohol and processed foots but her one vice, caffeine. >> however, having kicked bad habit just yet but i'm on in the morning. >> i know. believe me. i have three cups of coffee a day. >> reporter: she hopes by telling her story it can drive awareness to much needed awareness. >> if i can connect with other people and feel like they're not alone we can fight through this and hopefully in the next couple generations, they're going to have the right treatments and this will no longer be an issue. >> and again, there's no cure for endometriosis. and so doctors treat it on an individualized basis on symptoms or whether or not a woman is trying to get pregnant or not. >> and so many people just are not aware of the severity of this. >> no, and molly herself was not
8:26 am
aware of it until it happened to her and so she wants to make women know this is something that happens to one out of ten women and oftentimes hysterectomy is what it can lead to and that's such a dramatic event for any woman and so she wants to find and help doctors find other ways to get some relief to women without taking that drastic measure. >> that she's found some ways to do that and sharing her story. we'll be right back. we're a little overdressed. the audience is very comfortable here. [ applause ]
8:27 am
good morning, and thank you for joining us. i'm matt keller from abc7 mornings with breaking news. this is a live picture from sky 7 and that is not snow, it is hail on skyline boulevard in oakland and the surrounding areas. it is covered there. there's always been a few accidents on redwood road, a bus can't make it up the hill. viewers are tweeting pictures on the abc7 newsroom of kids actually sledding down the street. some people are describing it as blizzard like. we're going to be staying on the air longer than normal here. these are pictures there in oakland, you can see people trying to not slip while they're walking on the roads right there. we're going to check in with chp officer matthew hammer on the
8:28 am
phone. what are you guys seeing out there? >> these kids are able to slide down hills, there are things you need to do to avoid this hazard. >> we have got a picture here, and it shows a lot of people stopped. it's almost like they're parked on certain sections of the roads here in oakland. what would you advise people if you're not in a four-wheel drive suv and they hit one of those spots, what would you recommend they do? >> for any vehicle, not just a fo four-wheel drive vehicle, the best thing to two is let off your brakes and don't hit the
8:29 am
accelerator. >> are you seeing an increase in accidents around the city? why kind of calls are you getting. >> during these rainy times, during these wet times, we always see an increase in minor fender-benders and whatnot. >> we're looking at rooftops, it really looks like you're looking at lake tahoe, not oakland. d thank you for joining us, we really appreciate you input this morning. it looks like people may be getting out of their cars. is that snow gear? it looks like caltrans or some type of crew out there trying to help people out and get people moving there on the roads. but you can see that cars are taking up multiple lanes, they're stopped in the middle of the road there, redwood road and this is near skyline high school, so a lot of people trying to head to class. we have a fire engine right there in the middle of it and they're probably helping out a lot of different people.
8:30 am
you can see a lot of people just walking in the streets there, around that school and i'm sure that people are going to be getting out of their cars and maybe just waiting for that ice to melt. we're going to check in with lisa. and lisa, i know we were talking about this front that was coming in, but this is serious. i want to talk to alexis, because we do have so many issues on the roads. alexis, what are you seeing out there? >> this is oakmont neighborhood, and there's hail obviously creating difficult conditions. i think sky 7 is going to be taking us toward highway 13. we have the same conditions as there on sky lined boulevard. we have some thick ice reported right around redwood road. they were calling for caltrans to come out and put some salt down on the roadways, it feels like we're almost driving in the
8:31 am
sierra, not in the bay area here this morning. it looks like some of these roads are a little more cleared off as we're getting a little bit further south. so that certainly is good news that it's not extremely widespread, we're not seeing this all across the bay area, but there are some isolated areas where there's really tough going in some areas here. highway 13 and redwood road that's one location i'm seeing, we have a report of a crash and some ice on that roadway and as chp just said, you want to increase that following distance. lisa, you have gotten some reports of hail in the north bay this morning as well? >> that's right, i want to take you into the east bay, where you can see this red cell here around richmond and likely some more hail and heavy downpours around 580 and as we head over to martinez, 680 and pleasant hill road. just west of pleasant hill,
8:32 am
watch out con according cordnco looking at heavy downpours and rain, san ramon, and danville, those yellows and reds, and the pink here in the higher elevations, that is changing to snow. so we have had reports and you can see from our live camera, the snow on top of mt. tam, so certainly the atmosphere is cold enough, we're getting a little bit of sunshine and that is allowing those clouds to develop vertically in height, and those cumulous clouds we get those very dynamic storms. you see this trajectory west to northeast and we can track these cells moving to the east, so if you're commuting in from the east bay over the bay bridge, you will most likely run into some of these heavy downpours. and up towards vacaville, these cells here around concord, north of lafayette, the east bay particularly getting some very
8:33 am
rough weather. and if you can, be safe and send us some pictures. it's not all the time you wake up to what looks like snow on your monday morning commute. it's going to be that kind of day, we'll certainly see more showers and thunderstorms, but it won't be until the sun sets until we see the atmosphere settle down, anywhere from .25 inch to .20 and we could see more hail and those breezy winds accompanying some of these storms, from monterrey to big s sur, you can see the change over there. so april showers, throw in a little sunshine and it is a stormy afternoon here. but by the late afternoon, the evening commute, i suspect things will quiet down just a little bit. but remember that sun doesn't
8:34 am
set until 7:40, so certainly after the commute, we'll have much quieter air, the moisture continues to move into the sierra nevada and that's where we have our winter weather advisory through the 11:00 hour. we were so starved for rain in february, let's take it through april. >> interesting is a great word for it. interesting time as well. because this all started 7:15, and it's been going through now 8:34. this is going through the compute hours, people heading to work. we have john saki with oakland public schools. good morning, john. >> good morning. >> what would you say to parents who are going to drop off their students for class this morning? we saw outside of skyline high school and it looked like a lot of cars were parked in the streets and a lot of students in the streets walking around trying to get to class. what would you advise people right now? >> of course be extremely
8:35 am
careful. these are pretty unusual circumstances for the oakland hills, the bay area really as a whole so we want people to take extra time, don't worry about getting to school on time. get to school safely, because this is going to be a little challenging this morning for a lot of folks. >> it's interesting because this hail is sticking around out there on the roads, we have a live picture right now outside of a safeway store and it's really incredible. these are not live pictures, these are from early from sky 7, and the amount of ice on the ground is really debilitating for a lot of drivers here who are definitely not used to driving like this. you say everybody gets a free pass if they're tardy because of the weather conditions? >> of course, when you have circumstances like this, there's nothing we can do to mitigate it immediately. we have been in contact with the city of oakland, their public works department, they're alerting people to snow, and they're in the area working
8:36 am
toito i rectify it. of course what we're wanting is all this stuff to melt, so people can get where they need to go, whether they're going to school or work or anywhere else, we just want to make sure that everybody's safe. >> and maybe there's delays of school busses picking people up this morning, john? >> my understanding is even busses have been having trouble. just so you know, i'm sitting on skyline right now, approaching school and i'm getting hail at this moment, so this is not over yet. >> that's interesting, well, john, let's take you back to your reporting days, what are you seeing around you? >> it's windy, it's blustery, i'll be honest with you, i'm glad i'm not standing out on skyline in a channel 7 jacket, because i'm in my car right now and it's pretty bad outside right now. >> earlier we were seeing cars just parked on the street, are
8:37 am
you seeing that to be the case? or is traffic moving? >> so where i was coming to school from contra costa county so i went up fish ranch road figuring that the side of highway 13 and all those roads over there were a bit impacted. i was on fish ranch road,s there was not a problem. i'm on skyline now and there doesn't seem to be any issues no . >> thank you for calling in, we appreciate it. to students, you have a pass today to be late because of the weather. omar works at a chevron station over oakland. good morning, omar. >> good morning. >> tell us what you're seeing out there? >> crazy people, it looks like snow but it was hail that dpel f fell for a while. and roads are just -- people don't know how to drive, i can tell you that.
8:38 am
but yes, people are slipping and sliding and lots of exciting things. >> are you seeing any crashes out in front of your store? >> not in front of my store, but going up skyline, i know there's a bus that turned around or something but i'm not sure. but that's why there's a lot of traffic going up the hill. >> you say crazy people. are people just not slowing down. are they sliding down? >> they're going through the parking lot and instead of trying to slow down, they keep gunning it and the cars are spinning around and just, you know, i have driven in snow before so i know how bad it is and some people just don't know how to drive. it's like slow down, nobody knows what that means. >> we have a hard enough time driving in the rain, when it hails like theis and there's ic on the roads, people are definitely not used to it here in the bay area. omar, where is your station at? >> right on redwood road, the
8:39 am
chevron station up redwood road going to, like, skyline. 4150 redwood road. >> omar, tell us as far as the weather conditions now, we had someoning who was on previous to you, and they were saying that they were having hail at the moment. is it still hailing out there? >> i don't think it's hail, but it's really dark right now and the rain is coming down. >> so you do have rain, so it's still wet. is it windy, blustery? >> not blustery, but cooler than normal but it's really dark. this thing started afternoon 7:30 when everything started coming down. i was here at 6:00 and nothing was happening in the 7:00, 7:15, i heard a thunder like sound and we look outside, and it's like all white. it's like oh, my god. that's what was happening, and now the sun came out and now it's coming down and then it got
8:40 am
all dark again. i don't see hail right now, but it's just raining. >> okay, omar, so how hard is it raining? >> just coming down like rain, it's not like sprinkles, it's actually rain. >> still dangerous driving conditions out there. has the ice melted at all in front or your store? >> yes, it's running, oh, that's lightning and thunder. >> you just heard lightning and thunder? >> yes, just now. >> so obviously some very interesting weather conditions out there, omar, thank you for joining us and we really appreciate your input right now. >> i have some pictures i'm going to send. >> yeah, we're seeing a lot of interesting pictures out there on social media. abc7, #abc7now, anything you
8:41 am
want to post, put that hash tag on it and we will see it. we have interesting eyewitness talking about seeing lightning and thunder, seeing rain. >> i'm going to do my traffic report. spot on, yeah, no one knows how to drive and no one knows how to slow down. i can tell you this is the safeway at redwood road there, this was jushot just a few minus oeg on skyline. highway 13 really is gridlocked right now in both directions, on redwood road as is oakland hills. a lot of folks trying to take some back roads for alternates, mountain boulevard, some are saying do not take this route, we saw all the vehicles at skyline and redwood road.
8:42 am
right around skyline high school. what i'm basically saying is, stay home right now if you can, delay your trip, we also heard get to school safely, don't be in a hurry and get there, you'll receive a pass if you're late. so if you can delay your trip, that's the best recommendation, i'm watching live doppler 7 on top of our traffic maps, and omar is right, we have got some showers pushing into that area right now. so hopefully that's going to met all the this. and the more traffic that goes over it is going to help melt it. this is not live, this was earlier. really those side streets, that's really whether you want to take it easy, that's where we have got some really slick conditions, the main roads, we're starting to see those improve a little bit as farr as
8:43 am
conditions are concerned. accident count is up this morning, we have got some really long lays, a lot of folks just sitting there, matt, it's not a lot of fun. so if people can stay home and sit this one out for a couple of hours, i think that's probably the best advice. >> that's it, we're giving you an excuse to stay home from work right now, we're telling your boss that they're late because there's ice out there on the roads. omar, our chevron station manager there in oakland saying people are driving very, very crazy out there. slow down if you're going to lit the roads, if you have to be there, we also heard from oakland public schools that they're letting people come to school late because of the weather event that's happening right now in that area. we want to talk to katie who's live in that area. where are you? >> reporter: i'm at mountain boulevard and belfast avenue. i stepped out of my car momentarily to get some pictures of the ice, and the hail that
8:44 am
was on the ground, when we were hit with another spell, and i am absolutely drenched. it was a combination of both rain and hail and there's lost been some thunder and lightning, it's starting to lighten up a little bit now. but i can tell you my trip down 580 now, westbound from oakland zoo onward is just stop and go, absolutely packed then i diverted off on seminary, trying to avoid some of that traffic, highway 13, it's unclear if anybody can get down 13, i diverted off before reaching that exit. but you can kind of snake your way through the hills a little bit. but it appears that a lot of people are trying to take those side roads to gets around 580 and get around 13. so there's heavy, heavy traffic today. >> not easy to get around all of these places. what about ice on the road? are you seeing ice on the road? or is that rain that's coming through melting some of that ice? >> there's ice on the sides of the roads, the rain definitely
8:45 am
has washed some of it away, when i stepped out of the car, i definitely stepped on a patch of ice that was somewhat slick, the roads itself wasn't necessarily slick, but the sidewalk and areas next to the road were slick. >> right now we're looking at sky 7 video, skyline high school and there are students on the ground there that are walking on the football field and it is iced over and it looks like they're actually writing messages there on the football field and having some fun. i'm not sure if school is starting and how many students were able to make it to the classroom. as you were talking about the downpours, are we talking about seeing puddling there on the roads? is there a concern about hyd hydroplaning? or is the water not as intense as it was earlier? >> i'm on mountain boulevard, which is a bit of a slope, so it's running down the side of the roadway. the runoff was significant, it's
8:46 am
starting to let up now, but if you look at the sky, there are really dark ominous clouds, there was hailstorms, thunder storms coming at you. so i would say it's intermitt tach ant but definitely slippery. >> those are actually firefighters who are working to get some of the ice taken off some of the roads there, so they're trying to clear off that ice and make it safe for people to drive. ad i'm sure that this is obviously video, this isn't live, so i'm sure they have been able to accomplish some of that. are you seeing any city workers around you that are trying to do anything there? >> reporter: matt, i'm kind of in a residential area, so i can imagine this isn't their top priority, mountain road, we're
8:47 am
seeing commuters trying to get around the backup. at this point, no city workers, but certainly i can see a lot of traffic where i'm at. >> this looks like old roedwood drive, this is showing you exactly how it is right there. thank you so much katie, we appreciate your perspective on what's going on. we're going to check in with our news director. who's is live on the phone with us. >> i'm almost on the bay bridge right now, i'm approaching the toll plaza, but i live in that neighborhood where the hail was pretty intense, so my husband was driving my son to school at about 8:00, five to eight i think, he said don't go down redwood road, it looks like it's snowed. we're in the ridgemont
8:48 am
neighborhood, and so i went over to keller, keller was clear, it was fine, no hail or nothing. we had hail at our house about 7:30 or so, but it was really tiny pellets, not even worth a picture, obviously. so that was surprising to hear that it was looking like snow. so he did sent me a picture. i think it's at redwood road and highway 13. >> we have a lot of interesting video that's coming in. so how was your commute driving in, once you got passed out of that neighborhood were you okay? >> ye >> reporter: yeah, my neighborhood was fine, i went from keller to 580 and 580 was pretty clear and a section where 580 crosses 5th avenue, it looked like there was slush on the road of the roads and we have had hail a few times in the
8:49 am
last couple of months because of the crazy weather, but nothing like this, i heard from oakland p.d. say that people should stay in their homes and if you're not home and you're trying to get up the hill, don't try to get up the hill. i don't remember anything like that happening, it's pretty wild. >> was your husband able to get your kids to school or did they cancel class? >> reporter: well, they're at st. teresa's in upper rock ridge and i think everything is fine, because i called and he said he got my son to school and then he was in mont claire running some errands and i think everything is okay there, but what it sounds like is that there's still problems around redwood and highway 13. >> i was just looking at the map, maybe i can kind of show you this map i was handed. this is kind of crude, but this will give you an idea of what we were talking about. this is a map that was handed to
8:50 am
me by my assignment desk manager. this is skyline boulevard, and 13 right there, and this is the area that really was impacted by this, right next to the redwood regional park. that's kind of a crude way to show you, we do have our pictures from sky 7 which has been amazing this morning, and showing you all the different places that has had that hail accumulating on the roads there, and skyline high school and the football, and the safeway store there off redwood road. so obviously a lot of people are dealing with this hail on the ground. thank you so much tracey for joining us, we really appreciate it. now this we're going to take a look at our webs photos, thank you so much to everyone who's putting the #abc7now, we'll be
8:51 am
able to collect them and show them on the air. this is jew check this out, a snowboarder. riding down on the hail. and it's slick. and you can see just how slick it is as they go down that road there. so that's pretty incredible that someone is able to ride a snowboard down there, thank you juliana for sending us that picture. and this is hail in the oakland hills, look how hard that is coming down, that is some intense hail that is coming down and that's some big hail as well, going up against the house that they have there. so that's pretty incredible for how intense it was, and you can see why there was so much accumulation on the ground. this is melanie saying, hail oh, hail, and that's looking at the rooftops of that neighborhood, and you can see the selecollect
8:52 am
that they have there. and lisa arregen seeing some ha. >> we're still looking at some activity here over in the east bay, if you want to go to live doppler 7, you can see the yellows and the reds and the thunderer that is on the map right here. as we go in closer, we're still looking at some very dynamic weather east of i-80, around san pablo road, you can see the thunder there, and if we move around, also out towards concord, 680 further towards clayton and so the rain is still with us, there's an upper level catastrophe th trough that's moving in and as it does, there's sunshine, cold air is in place, and we have that rain-snow mix on mt. hamilton, and we have had some snow up around mt. tam. there's still activity moving in
8:53 am
here, check out around richmond and berkeley. if you're headed over the richmond san mateo bridge, very wet. this is continuing to move off to the east. so the yoellows, the oranges, ad some of those downpours will have embedded hail and those breezy winds. as you notice, we have put it into motion, moving from southwest to northeast. and there still is more offshore, you add in a little sunshine and as soon as this trough moves off and the sun sets, things will get quieter. but it's going to take all day. so you can expect this welcome to stay with us throughout the afternoon and perhaps even the evening commute. very hit and miss. and it will be of course rapidly moving on once you have the heavy downpour. but don't let your guard down, of course this can be slick and dangerous, and we go all the way down to the santa cruz mountains where there's snow there and
8:54 am
heavy downpours as well. so this is a spring storm that's not only bringing some hail and low elevation snow down to 2,500 feet in the bay area, we're also looking at the snow in the sierra nevada and that has been -- that advisory has been extended to 11:00 tonight. half a foot there, as we see our weather getting increasingly interesting with the heating of the day, the skun and that trouh pushing through, all the elements, ingredients there for a dynamic and pretty dangerous in spot. make sure if you see one of those storms, stay put in your car and wait for it to pass and never go through those flooded roadways, you never know how deep they are. alexis has an update on the east bay, i think. >> well, it's not great going here lisa, as you would imagine with all those icy conditions and the hail. i do want to talk about a tweet that came in from oakland police
8:55 am
department there, requesting people to slow down while driving through these areas, and if you can wait at home until this is over, that is better. this is highway 13 right around redwood road and we have to itly red driving conditions on 580 and 518. so that's skyline, 35th, high street, a lot of folks are trying to take these back roads for alternates and it's just not great, basically we're looking at red conditions everywhere you look and i'm not sure if we're totally stopped still on skyline at redwood road, they had caltrans crews outs there bringing salt and they're actually shoveling off the roadway. the further we get into this, the more vehicles driving over that payment and that hail, it's going to improve very quickly, hopefully we'll be back to
8:56 am
better driving conditions soon. myself, oakland p.d., oakland public schools all recommending avoid your trip, delay your trip until things improve. i only have a couple of incidents reported, highway 13 and redwood road is one crash location. we have a lot of little funder benders this morning, so hopefully nothing too serious, matt, one of those days you really don't want to be on the roads if you don't have to be. >> oakland schools giving everybody a free pass if they're late today. i know skyline road was covered with hail, with the accumulat n accumulations of the hail. you can see some firefighters out here that are trying to clear off that hail from the ground from early, this is from sky 7 hd. now it's time to check in with rebecca, who is an oakland
8:57 am
resident, what are you seeing at your home? >> well, now i'm about to get on the freeway, but i have seen hail everywhere, it took me about an hour and a half to get my son up to skyline high school. >> an hour and a half? and how long does it normally take you? >> 15 minutes. >> so an hour and 15 minute delay for you to finally get your son to skyline high school this morning. what conditions were you seeing when you were driving? >> a lot of cars, fender-benders, cars, sliding on the ice, couldn't get traction, a bunch of them ended up pulling off to the side of the road, busses having kids walking up redwood road to get to skyline high school. >> so people just parked in the road and didn't go anywhere because they couldn't have control of their vehicles while driving in these acaccumulation. so people got out of their cars
8:58 am
and started walking? >> yes, parents stayed in their cars and a lot of kids started walking up to skyline. >> you say you're getting on the freeway on 580, what are the conditions there. >> i had to go all the way down 35th and go down to macarthur, they shut down headed to redwood road, and it's been back to back traffic everywhere. >> thank you, rebecca, and an hour and a half to get her kid to school when it usually takes 15 minutes, thank you for joining us and we appreciate everyone sending their photos. we take a look at them being sent in here from the social media websites. david, we have all the hail out there, that was some thick act came lags -- accumulation on the ground there. a lot of this happening in
8:59 am
oakland. jingletown, yes, it feels like winter looking outside from p.j. in oakland. and here's another one of those cars that are on the root and obviously agent of trouble for people staying in their lanes and they're sliding all around all around and this is oakland p.d. saying o.p.d. is asking people to slow down, wait in your homes until the roads clear up, that's the best advice if you don't wanting to be slidingaround. all hail hail. you can see just how big those pebbles of hail are and how they stuck to the ground in oakland. and here's from kim, it hailed in the fruitvale area in oakland. we want to remind you if you can send us your pictures and your videos, #abc7now on all your social media sites and you can check out abc7news.com. we'll be back here at 11:00
