live where you live, this is abc 7 news. looking like a winter wonderland in oakland this morning, but that was not snow. it was hail. crazy weather in the bay area. thank you for joining us. i'm jessica castro, and kristin has the day off. let's go to where the worst of the storm was concentrated this morning. heavy hail fell at 7:30 in the morning in redwood road, and we have team coverage of today's storm, and we begin with lisa, people are stunned by this hailstorm. >> reporter: that's right, jessica, and there's more to come. we have sunshine, cold air in place, you can see that the speckling of the clouds and
11:01 am
lightning strikes offshore. with a little sunshine in place after the sun came up, we had that heavy downpour, and right now, you can see by crow canyon road in the east bay and north of castro valley, there's a cell in san ramone. watch for the hail and snow piling up in mt. hamilton. interesting morning in the south bay, 280, wet weather, but highway 35, there is so much cold air in place, and with the sun, that allows for enough lift that we do have this dynamic weather with the thunderstorm activity, so snow there. we have snow mixing in with rain around stenson beach. more ice and tricky roads by lakeport and highway 1 in cloverdale. when the sun sets, things settle down. we'll track the forecast including warmer, sunnier weather just ahead. >> thank you.
11:02 am
check in with you shortly. a look behind me at the white streets covered in hail. a bizarre sight never seen before in the east bay. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in oakland now. >> reporter: so much of it, jessica, it's still accumulated here, although the sun is out. you really do have to take a double take. it looks like we could be in tahoe, not oakland and shocked the residents here. it hit right when they were trying to get to work and school dropoff, and they just were not sure how to handle it. there were concerns about car damage and how to drive in it, especially here in the hills where it made things a bit slick. >> my daughter goes to that preschool, so driving up the driveway, covered in snow, we were sliding. it was like tahoe. crazy. absolutely covered. making hail snowmen. >> thought it was raining really hard, and then when you looked
11:03 am
outside, it was, like, big little chunks of rocks just coming down. i had to check my car, like, twice because it's, like, it was everywhere, and, like, okay, maybe i hope it doesn't break my windshield because it was coming down really hard. >> reporter: people we talked to say they couldn't believe how much hail fell and the size of it. they had trouble keeping their kids out of it because they wanted to play in it, and they couldn't believe what it did to traffic. it felt like this storm really just turned monday morning upside down for a lot of people in the east bay. it's a winter wonderland. it's strange in april. abc 7 news. >> thank you. a bus funnll of kids in skyline high school got stuck. this is the scene at 8:30 this morning. abc 7 news reporters talked to students about their strange

morning. katie? >> reporter: jessica, well, it is not a full snow day despite what students heard. here, skyline classes started an hour half later than usual. it's small hail, but there's been reports of marble sized hail. this is the size of bbs. it's substantial the amount that accumulated, and we spoke to the students who were stuck on the bus as it slid down the hill. oakland public works crews say this is the first time they've ever been called to clear hail and drop sand. a wild morning for anybody caught up in the mess when those crews arrived on redwood road, conditions they say, were treacherous. an ac transit bus driving this route to take students to skyline high school was stuck, one slipped and slid. the hail on the steep hill made it nearly impossible to get up the hill, and we encountered students stuck at safeway at the
11:05 am
bottom of the hill after the bus lost traction and started sliding. >> well, it was scary at first because i didn't know if we had traction or not, but then it just kept sliding, but we stopped eventually. >> reporter: students are excited, they said they had never seen hail and snow in oakland so this was a treat. in skyline high school, classes were delayed, not cancelled. many couldn't make it to campus this morning, and they say tardies and absences will be excused because of the bizarre circumstances. the district had to do something similar to this in the north bay wildfires when skyline was hit with smoke from the fires. that's the most recent they remember having a sort of snow day half day like this. out here live, there's large chunks on the ground, but at this time, the roadways are mostly cleared, just really wet and a little bit slick still. live in oakland, abc 7 news.
11:06 am

11:07 am
is redwood road at old redwood road. really improving. it is a hilly area. traction was tough. i've been looking at sensors on traffic maps, and it looks better. it's thinned out and side roads are reopened. it's safe to venture out. >> vast improvement, thank you. viewers snapped pictures or videos. let's go now to abc 7 news reporter with the flurry of reaction on social media. >> reporter: jess, we got a huge reaction on social media. people are posting incredible pictures and videos using the #abc7now. this is one of my favorite of the morning. watch this. a man snowboards down his oakland hill. you see the road is just covered in hail and ice. other viewers have been sharing pictures from their neighborhoods like david who writes, oh, hail no.

and i recently had hi, ia heart attack. it changed my life. but i'm a survivor. after my heart attack, my doctor prescribed brilinta. it's for people who have been hospitalized for a heart attack. brilinta is taken with a low-dose aspirin. no more than 100 milligrams as it affects how well brilinta works. brilinta helps keep platelets from sticking together and forming a clot. in a clinical study, brilinta worked better than plavix. brilinta reduced the chance of having another heart attack... ...or dying from one. don't stop taking brilinta without talking to your doctor, since stopping it too soon increases your risk of clots in your stent, heart attack, stroke, and even death. brilinta may cause bruising or bleeding more easily, or serious, sometimes fatal bleeding. don't take brilinta if you have bleeding, like stomach ulcers, a history of bleeding in the brain, or severe liver problems. slow heart rhythm has been reported. tell your doctor about bleeding new or unexpected shortness of breath any planned surgery, and all medicines you take. if you recently had a heart attack, ask your doctor if brilinta is right for you. my heart is worth brilinta. if you can't afford your medication, astrazeneca may be able to help.
