>> strange days. but still the of the bay area shine through and in the midst of the storm, a rainbow. very nice. good evening, i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz in for kristen zse. the morning hail storm caught many off guard and caused dangerous conditions. >> we have live team coverage with a look at the hardest hit areas but first sandhya patel has the latest. >> it has been an active april day. right to live doppler 7 and show you where we're still seeing some showers as get you into the north bay, street level radar around santa rosa, guerneville into south santa rosa and light rain from fairfield to vaca ville, as we head toward the south bay and morgan hill, gilroy moderate pockets of rain around del monte so watch out and mt. hamilton has been seeing snow. it is not been just mt. hamilton, we've seen snow in the santa cruz mountains and lightning strikes as we take you

back in time, we've seen hail as we showed you in the pictures. this is a level one. it is a light system on our storm impact scale and the next few hours isolated showers and thunder and the winds will remain gusty. i'll let you know if there are more spring storms in the forecast. let me give you a hint. don't put the brae-- the braebs away. a traffic mess in its wake was left behind. and we have that part of the coverage from laura. >> reporter: that is hard to imagine right now, because the sun is shining, but earlier today this roadway behind me was packed with cars for as far as the eye could see. many of them slipping and sliding thanks to the hail that moved through. >> it sounded like machine gun bullets hitting the house. >> reporter: franco perez said it was like nothing he's experienced in 14 years living

in the oakland hills when a sudden and powerful hail storm rocked his neighborhood. >> this is unbelievable. just pea shaped and had to take the dog for a walk and i was sliding down the driveway holding on to the railway. >> reporter: a major thoroughfare leading up and downtown the oakland hills. >> it was everywhere. maybe i -- i hope it doesn't break my windshield because it was coming down really hard. >> reporter: as seen from sky 7, the hail created traffic problems below. from the air, though it looked a lot like snow. >> there was so much hail which made it slushy and slippery conditions. >> we had a gentleman out here with a four by four and he was using it as a solve to really shovel some of the hail from under the tires. >> and they hit your parked car did. >> reporter: in this instagram video, these two cars slid into each other while a man tried to melt the hail with water from a

garden hose. city of oakland crews came through the area spreading dirt on the roadways. trying to p-- provide traction for the cars to move along. despite the problems created by the sudden burst of hail, many seemed to relish the icy event. in the east bay in the middle of april. >> i was like what is this hail storm? it was absolutely mind blowing. it was so cool. >> reporter: in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. and those roads that laura talked about caused problems for students and staff trying to get to skyline high school. katie joins us live with the oakland semi-snow day. >> reporter: there was clearly an air of excitement with the students and the closest experience to a snow day and you could see just how thick and heavy this hail is. it accumulated quickly. >> oakland public works crews

sanded and scraped and say they've never seen anything like this hail. >> that is covered like snow. that is how bad it is. >> reporter: the hail is a welcome sight for some skyline high school students. >> it is like a snow day. and a snow day in oakland. >> kind of. >> >> reporter: buses slipped and then stopped while attempting to make up it the hill. >> we're waiting for our parents but because the bus slid down the hill there was traffic and now we've -- we've been late to school. >> reporter: sky 7 shows the back-up. a.c. transit held buses at joaquin miller and skyline and red wood roads. the dangerous conditions ruin the the commute to skyline and nearby carl monk elementary, it is not a snow day. there is still class. but there will be some excused tardies today. >> my mom got a call from school saying there dangerous roads but try to come to school. >> and there was ice on the ground and i slid so many times. >> reporter: other scrapped it,

saying for them hail counts as a snow day. >> half way up the hill, i saw everybody walking down and i'm like, okay so is school canceled, but all of us are going home. >> reporter: the last time oakland unified had to cancel or forgive classes due to weather was during the north bay fires. because the school was inundated with smoke. in oakland, abc 7 news. well viewers across the bay area sent us pictures and video of hail as it came down where they live. take a look at this instagram photo from oakland where a kid used a cardboard box to sled down the hail-covered street this morning. a lot of fun. be careful. and in alameda, a pair of videos of hail falling in the neighborhood this morning. parts of alameda county have received nearly three tenth of an inch of rain and hail since just yesterday. the wild w w w w w confined to the east bay. here is video sent to abc 7 news on instagram.

border are still being hashed out. despite the governor's commitment to send 4 hub guard member -- 400 members and they released a statement saying in part, the federal government has not yet responded. the next step is for the federal government to respond by signing the memorandum of agreement. this agreement lays out the conditions the governor set forth in his decision last week to deploy troops to the border to combat transnational crime but made clear state troops could not conduct immigration enforcement. they would not comment on the ongoing talks between the governor and the trump administration but said it is clear what the role would be for the guard members. >> i do believe that the governor tried to find a way to make sure that we address critical needs and concerns that california would have when it comes to protecting our boardir. >> reporter: in a tweet last week, brown received praise from

the president. via tweet the president thanked the governor for, quote, doing the right thing and sending the national guard to the border. yet, no official agreement has been announced by either party. >> this is really setting up a stand-off in some ways between the federal government and the state of california. >> reporter: melinda is a chair of the political science at san jose state. she said the ongoing immigration debate could set the stanley cup for more political turmoil. now we have to wait to see if trump agrees with brown's conditions. in san jose, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. a bill passed the first hurdle in sacramento to enhance the school security by taxing gun owners in california. the bill included a tax on purchases of both guns and ammunition. it would also require every middle and junior high school to have at least one on campus counselor. backers of the bill say counselors would help children dealing with bullying and identify students in need of

help. >> the educators see kids that are troubled and potential of having problems down the road. and if we could intervene and help them, it goes along way. >> gun rights advocates claim the bill unfairly targeted law-abiding firearms owner and it needs a two-thirds majority to pass both houses of the legislature before the governor could sign it into law. a big sports night across the bay area. the a's take on the white sox at oakland alameda coliseum and the playoffs the sharks host the ducks and the warriors are in action in oracle. the dubs take on the spurs in game two of the nba series in the first round. the warriors fresh off their game one victory on saturday. abc 7 news sports director larry beil is live at oracle with a preview. >> reporter: this series is a chess match between gregg popovich and steve kerr. it is pupil versus mentor. and here popovich will come up

the bay area newspaper has been awarded a pulitzer prize. today the staff of the santa rosa press democrat received the journalism award for the cover of the wildfires. wayne freedman spoke with the staff. very happy party, the pietz and all of the products of this particular ann you're looking at hard core seasoned journalists from the press democrat seconds after learning they've won the pulitzer prize. >> it is the highest ward in american journalism. >> proudest moment of our careers. >> the award for breaking news covers several additions right after the fire. they beat every other newspaper in the country. the santa rosa press democrat em employed only 50 people and then

it is part of the fallout from facebook's data scandal. the new registration process will allow users to sign up using only their phone number for verification and said it is a result of users asking for an alternative registration method and it will go effect tomorrow. another lesson in let the buyer beware after police in los angeles showed counter cosmetics during a raid and people complained. some customers developed rashes after deals too good to be true. >> the easiest way to identify that something is counterfeit is common sense. where did you buy it? did you buy it on the street or the back of a car. that is most common. and two is price. if you are buying something that 50% to 75%. you might want to think again. >> lab tested shows the fake cosmetics contained lead and bacteria and in some cases animal droppings.

a what's app and investigators were able to pull partial fingerprints from this app photo with this man's hand holding extacy tablets and it was a link to a suspect in the data base. the tip led police to find the photo. and the man and his mother and father were booked and it is a revolutionary technique that could have a major impact on fighting crime. no kidding. well you may not have to lug home all of those items. >> and your credit score is likely to go up. >> the target thing is weird. this is online buy. you might see -- talk about your credit score. you might see a bump because of new federal rules on what could be reported by major credit reporting companies. in from now on credit agencies will no longer include tax liens

in credit errors. this follows an investigation by the consumer financial protection which found widespread problems with lien reporting and this only affects a small percentage but a credit score jump of 30 points is possible. that could be the difference between a pour and average credit score. sales tax on online purchases have been a hot topic of debate in washington. with the supreme court hearing a case tomorrow that could decide whether consumers will pay sales tax on all online purchases. now big retailers like amazon and walmart collect taxes in the states with sales tax but without a principal store do not collector pass along the sales tax. they are losing out on millions of dollars, and local retailers say it is an unfair advantage to out of state stores.

>> san francisco is on the list of target offering same day delivery of items bought in the store. it costs $7 per order and they started in new york sit last year and designed to help people get large orders home without carrying bags on public transportation. the service is expected to be available in san francisco by the end of the month. target also said plans will offer same day online delivery by the end of the year. wow, instant delivery is the thing now. >> no question. thanks. well the latest spring storm will keep the slopes open a bit longer in the sierra. here is how the conditions look at heavenly mountain resource. reports say about seven inches of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. it is the last re-- resort to remain open. kirkwood closed last week and sigh era tahoe's last day was

yesterday. it is great to see the snow in the sierra. live doppler 7. good evening. moderate pockets of rain moving across from pacifica on the peninsula and heading into skyline boulevard, 280 and south san francisco and we're tracking some showers and snow showers, up around mendocino and lake counties. as you notice, this is all turning to snow over the mountains and it has been all morning long. also tracking showers around cobb mountain and mixed precipitation near the radar site and light rain falling from hillsberg to windsor into street level radar and old redwood highway could run into a moderate pocket of rain. so be careful and still downpours. lighter rain from san martin in the south bay into gilroy across monterey road. take a look at this picture. all kinds of picture and video. this is fromma -- from alameda

where they had hail. and we've seen everything from thunderstorms to hail and snow over the higher elevations. you name it. and we are going to continue with that theme. so on our storm impact scale, the next few hours we have scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms and winds gust 20 to 35 and it has been a breezy afternoon. rainfall totals so far just under a half an inch in santa rosa. two tenths of an inch in san jose. you will notice san francisco a third of an inch and livermore 33 hundredths of an inch so adding to the rainfall. still running behind in term of percent of normal. same thing for october and santa rosa and 77 in livermore. san jose 61% of normal. but the good news is we have another storm coming. here is a look at the sierra nevada. they've had chain controls off and on for the roadways. it is still snowing into the mountains. the cold nature of the snow allowing for snow levels. winter weather advisory and up to a foot expected and snow level at about 4500 feet and

expect the travel delays to continue. it has felt more like winter today. notice the teams -- the temperatures in the 40s and 50s. from the east bay hills camera and sun and clouds and rain returns late wednesday into early thursday and sunny and warmer for the end of the week. the hour by hour time line. 6:00 p.m. still trailing showers. at 7:00 p.m. you notice the showers moving across the region. a thunderstorm throughout will be over by about 8:00 p.m. and we start to see the skies clearing out going into the morning commute and you will need to bundle up. take a look the temperatures. in the mid-30s to 40s and a chilly start and then in the afternoon a comfortable day. teams upper 50s to mid-60s. breezy for your tuesday. but special not where you should be for this time of the year in terms of your averages. mostly sunny tomorrow in the accuweather seven-day forecast, a level one system and wednesday evening into thursday and seeing scattered light showers. that will bring snow level down to about 3500 feet. but it is not going to be as
