and starbucks will close some stores for anti-racial bias training. it comes after the arrest of two black men in philadelphia. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, april 18th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. we begin with the deadly explosion on a southwest airlines flight. >> this was a nightmare scenario. the plane's engine coming apart in the air. debris punctured the passenger cabin nearly pulling the passenger there, jennifer reirden out of the window. >> the 43-year-old woman was a wife and mother. >> reporter: it's a nightmare scenario playing out in real time. more than 30,000 feet in the air. oxygen masks dropping from the ceiling. everyone terrified. a hole in the plane. a woman nearly sucked out.

>> the crew couldn't hold back and some were crying. >> there is a hole in the side of the aircraft also. >> reporter: southwest airlines flight 1380, carrying 144 passengers and five crew left laguardia at 10:43 headed to dallas. at 11:04 it hit cruising altitude at 32,000 feet. but minutes later, the left engine failed and one minute later the plane had plunged nearly 30,000 feet. the plane is diverted to philadelphia. multiple passengers say that woman sitting in row 14 was nearly sucked out the window. she was critically injured and later died. >> negative pressure had pulled her outside the plane partially. these two wonderful men managed to get her back in the plane.

i think i can probably tell you that there was significant trauma to the body. significant head trauma, facial trauma. >> reporter: the plane was on the ground by 11:27 a.m. emergency crews ready on the runway. at least seven more people suffered minor injuries. >> about three rows behind me was where the engine blew out. the crew did a fantastic job with southwest keeping everybody calm and making sure that we addressed the situation. it was a pretty harrowing experience, for sure. >> reporter: the flight crew including the woman co-piloting the plane getting credit for keeping their cool. >> we have part of the aircraft missing, so we really need to slow down a bit. >> reporter: from the ground, officials and passengers could all see the mangled engine. investigators now racing to try and figure out what happened. a team from the ntsb is on the scene. >> one of the fan blades, the

number 13 fan blade was separated and missing. so this fan blade was broken right at the hub. there's evidence of metal fatigue where the blade separated. >> reporter: it's unclear exactly what caused the plane's left engine to explode. we're now learning the woman killed, albuquerque executive jennifer reirden. she'd been on her way back from a business trip to new york. for investigators, it's now a race to figure out exactly what happened and why. linzie janis, in philadelphia. >> and the ntsb crew is right there in philadelphia right now trying to figure out what happened. but just to hear that pilot so calmly say we have part of the airplane missing, we're going to have to slow down a little bit. she was so calm under all that pressure. >> hats off to all of them for how they handled the situation. so unfortunate that somebody died in this. but a lot of people are waiting to hear how this happened. what a nightmare. >> that crew definitely heroes.

turning now to the death of the former first lady, barbara bush, the beloved matriarch of that political dynasty. >> she passed away at her houston home surrounded by family. a spokesman described former president bush as brokenhearted, saying he held her hand all day. president trump has ordered flags half-staff today in her memory. >> mrs. bush will lie in repose at st. martin's episcopal church. she will be laid to rest near her 3-year-old daughter who passed away so many years ago, and that is where former president george h.w. bush will be buried some time.

>> we heard news that he and his family were at peace because they knew she was. >> he also said i'm a lucky man. barbara bush was my mother. >> here's cokie roberts with her own special relationship with the former first lady. >> caller: barbara bush became an american icon and it was remarkable how people really adored her. that she understood that as first lady she had a pulpit as lady bird johnson, her good friend, said. and she used it and continues, continues to use it, even after her passing. the first time i interviewed barbara bush, it was in 1988 for an assignment for "17" magazine. and she takes one look at me and says what are you doing here? why am i talking to somebody from "17" magazine? they can't vote. so i was terrified. we quickly became amicable. it was the first interview with

barbara bush. let's move on to the other story we're following, the investigation into the horrible scene in the skies. the southwest airlines passenger nearly sucked out of the window of a plane. >> the woman was killed when the engine exploded, breaking the window next to her seat. a preliminary investigation shows evidence of metal fatigue >> the woman killed was jennifer reirden. a mother of two young children. she was a community relations leader for wells fargo and had been in new york city on a business trip. >> seven other passengers were slightly injured. linzie janis has more. >> reporter: the in-flight terror began just minutes after takeoff. >> number one engine failure. >> reporter: southwest flight 1380, carrying 144 passengers and five crew was headed from

laguardia for dallas when it abruptly diverted to philadelphia. the cabin losing pressure. masks dropping from the ceiling. terrified passengers, bracing. >> we've got injured passengers. >> injured passengers, okay. is your plane physically on fire? >> no. it's not on fire, but part of it's missing. >> reporter: you can see the left engine mangled. a window in the 14th row blown out where jennifer reirden, a mother of two was sitting. multiple passengers telling us she was nearly sucked out of the plane. >> you hear a loud explosion, explosion shattered the window. wind was pouring through the plane. >> one fatality. >> reporter: at least seven injured. passengers streaming the chaos on wi-fi. one man sending his pregnant wife a good-bye text. >> my wife is in her third trimester for our child.

the family of the woman who lost her life. and we have new information on high-level talks with north korea. mike pompeo recently traveled to north korea for a secret meeting with kim jong un. it took place over easter weekend, shortly after he was nominated to be secretary of state. while meeting with japan's prime minister in florida, the president also spoke about his own potential meeting with the north korean leader. trump said five locations are being considered. it's supposed to happen by early june. the u.n. ambassador, nikki haley in the meantime, isn't backing down from a very public spat with white house officials. she said new sanctions would be announced the following day, but that didn't happen. and new white house economic adviser larry kudlow then suggested haley was suffering from momentary confusion. haley fired back a memo saying, with all due respect, i don't

>> a little tech fake news. >> it is wednesday, april 18. i guess nothing is real anymore. from abc news, this is "world news now." say good morning to you all. we begin with the deadly explosion on a southwest airlines flight and details about the passenger nearly sucked out of the plane. >> her name is jennifer reirden. she was killed when the jet's engine exploded mid flight over the northeast. it sent shrapnel through her window and partially sucked her out of that window itself. >> she was a married mother of two. she worked for wells fargo bank and was returning from a business trip when that flight to dallas lost pressure and went into a steep descent. >> a loud explosion, the explosion shattered the window.

wind was blowing through the plane. >> the boeing 747 made an emergency landing in philadelphia. the 149 people on board are calling the pilot, tammy jo schultz, a hero. she was one of the first female military pilots in the u.s. military and the one of the first women to fly a hornet for the navy. >> schultz wasn't the only hero on flight 1380. passengers frantically tried to save jennifer. >> the window had broken. and the suction, negative pressure had pulled her outside the plane partially. these two wonderful men, the emt and a passenger, they managed to get her back inside the plane, and we laid her down and started cpr. we continued that for about 20 minutes. we landed while we were still doing cpr. i have to take my hats off to everyone.

i was amazingly calm and wasn't frightened. i had a moment of just when the masks dropped down, i thought okay, this might be it. >> that's passenger peggy phillips. you hear her say hats off to the crew. many are taking their hats off to her for how she handled herself in the emergency and tried to save reirden. she thought, i just updated my will. so that's good. it just goes to show a lot of passengers thought it was their final moments. >> there were some seven other passengers who received minor injuries. >> preliminary examination of the jet shows evidence of metal fatigue. southwest's ceo says the plane was inspected two days before the flight. >> there was a similar incident in 2016. the jet's cabin depressurized but no pieces pierced the cabin. both used engines made by the same company.

there was an incident as well involving an air france plane heading to los angeles and one of its four engines exploded over the atlantic ocean and it was forced to make an emergency landing. it's every one of our nightmares. >> of course. that's the last thing you want to see on a flight. and you feel really helpless. of course the people stayed calm. someone lost their life here and now southwest will be doing everything they can to figure out what happened. condolences are rolling in for barbara bush. >> just two days after her family announced that she will not seek further medical treatment. president trump released a statement saying mrs. bush will long be remembered for her strong devotion to country and family, both of which she served unfailingly well. he ordered flags lowered to half-staff in her memory.

>> and george w. bush says she brought love and literacy to millions. the elder president bush is brokenhearted but strong. karen travers has more on the life and legacy of barbara bush. >> reporter: born barbara pierce in 1925, she grew up in rye, new york. the daughter of the publisher of mccall's and red book magazines. at a christmas dance at just 16 years old, she met 17-year-old george herbert walker bush. two years later they became engaged before the young pilot left to fight in the world war. the couple had six children but lost their 3-year-old daughter to leukemia. >> it doesn't get easier to talk about. but it makes everybody more valuable. >> reporter: the family made their home in midland, texas

where george bush went to work in the oil business. they moved more than two dozen times as he transitioned out of the private sector and into politics. he went on to win the white house in 1988. mrs. bush held the bible as her husband was sworn in as the 41st president. as first lady, she promoted reading, chairing the barbara bush foundation. the bushes are retired and spent most of their time in kennebunkport, maine. >> she told family and friends recently that she was looking forward to reuniting with her 3-year-old daughter who died of cancer so many years ago. she will be laid to rest on saturday following a private funeral service. >> first, she will lie in repose at the family's long-term church giving the general public an opportunity to pay respects. >> reporter: this is where of course the public mourning will

take place. we're going to see two days of private visitation at a local funeral home for barbara bush here in houston, and then there will be a public visitation on friday. she wanted a simple ceremony, although it may not be so simple, because we may see current and former political officials all the way up to and possibly including the president of the united states attending this funeral. she'll then be buried at the same spot where her daughter robin was buried in college station, texas, which is about 90 miles away from where we are right now in houston. one last note about her daughter robin. in her final days we're told, barbara bush talked quite frequently of her daughter and spoke of how she hoped that she would see her first thing upon her passing. for now, this is dan harris on the streets of houston, back to you. >> and barbara bush and the former president were married
