than any other presidential couple in american history. she was an american icon, matriarch of a political dynasty. >> i hated it when anyone criticized my brilliant husband, and i was furious when they criticized my son. >> reporter: one of only two first ladies who was also the mother of a president, barbara bush was fiercely loyal and quick-witted. >> and speaking of glamour, i want you to look at me very carefully. >> reporter: and humble, at times even more popular than her husband. >> i, george herbert walker bush. >> reporter: as first lady, famous for her candor known for telling it like it is and using her position to promote literacy. in recent years barbara bush had been hospitalized numerous times while battling congestive heart failure. a family spokesman saying the 92-year-old was in failing health and deided not to seek additional medical treatment. former president george w. bush releasing a statement saying in part, my dear mother has passed on.

we are sad but our souls are settled because we know hers was. his father, former president george h.w. bush, said to be brokenhearted after losing his wife of 73 years. in a statement, his chief of staff revealing he held her hand all day and was at her side when she left this good earth. and former president george h.w. bush also said to be stoic but staying strong during this time and, diane and kendis, on saturday a private service is planned for about 1,500 guests including several former presidents and first ladies. >> we'll all be watching that service, indeed. janai, thank you. and we're going to have much more on mrs. bush's life in just a few minutes including her response when she was criticized for being old-fashioned. right now we turn to the engine explosion on a southwest airlines flight. the woman who was killed and nearly sucked out of that plane has been identified as jennifer reardon, a bank executive and mother of two from albuquerque, new mexico. passengers are now describing the moment when the window

she was sitting next to shattered. >> all of us thought this might be it. >> reporter: this morning a terrifying first account from the deadly midair explosion. >> shortly after takeoff, we heard a loud noise, and the plane started shaking like nothing i've ever experienced before. it sounded like the plane was coming apart. >> reporter: the southwest flight from new york's laguardia airport to dallas when it suddenly had to be diverted to philadelphia. it's believed the plane's engine exploded shattering a window in the 14th row. jennifer reardon was sitting in the seat next to that window. witnesses say she was nearly sucked out of the plane. peggy phillips, a retired registered nurse, rushed to riordan's aid. >> the window had broken and the suction, negative pressure had pulled her outside the plane partially. these two wonderful men, the emt and a passenger, managed to get her back inside the plane and we lay her down and we started cpr. >> reporter: phillips says she performed cpr on riordan for 20 minutes until the plane made the

emergency landing, but the mother of two was pronounced dead at a hospital. >> if you can possibly imagine going through the window of an airplane at about 600 miles an hour and hitting either the fuselage or the wing with your body, with your face, then i think i can probably tell you that there was significant trauma to the body. >> reporter: another passenger, marty martinez, started streaming live on facebook after the oxygen masks fell from the ceiling. he later wrote on facebook, i literally bought wi-fi as the plane was going down because i wanted to be able to reach the people i loved thinking these were my final moments on earth. as part of the investigation, the ntsb is focusing on the engine to determine why it came apart. the head of the agency says a piece of the engine was found 70 miles away from the airport. >> it's very unusual, and so we are taking this event extremely seriously. this should not happen, and we

want to find out why it happened so that we can make sure that the preventive measures are put in place. >> reporter: southwest's ceo says the airline's entire fleet will undergo intense inspections and overnight southwest airlines paid tribute to the tragedy changing its logo on twitter from the normally colorful heart to a gray one. and the ntsb is also looking at a similar incident in 2016 when a southwest flight to orlando had to make an emergency landing after a piece of the engine punctured a hole above the wing. abc news has confirmed a top level secret meeting between the u.s. and north korea. the cia director mike pompeo met kim jong-un over easter weekend. the highest level contact between the two countries since 2000. it was part of an effort to lay the groundwork for president trump's possible summit with kim as early as next month. well, the president says five locations have been discussed as possible venues for the talks. now, we are told that he's ruled out north korea and china and it's unlikely that kim would

agree to meet in the u.s. so that leaves south korea or somewhere in europe as contenders. in the meantime, the white house is trying to clear up some confusion about a statement made by u.n. ambassador nikki haley which triggered a public spat. the president's economic adviser larry kudlow has now apologized for claiming haley was confused when she said the u.s. planned new sanctions on russia. haley responded to kudlow again publicly saying, with all due respect, i don't get confused. president trump reportedly stopped those sanctions from being imposed on russia. the white house says the sanctions are being reviewed. cooler temperatures today are expected to help fire crews in northwest oklahoma battle wildfires that are being described as epic and historic. two people have been killed and more than 50 homes and buildings have been damaged or destroyed. about 625 square miles have burned so far. and those flames are moving fast. in one case officials say a fire spread across eight miles in just three hours.

and time now for a look at your weather forecast for this wednesday morning. good morning. as far as the fires are concerned, still parched conditions with red flag warnings throughout all of new mexico going into texas, oklahoma, even leaning into portions of kansas. then the winds posing problems particularly for colorado just east of the denver area going into nebraska and kansas. in addition to that, we will have some beneficial rain that will slide through denver and at least slow down the fires just a touch and then too much precipitation in the north central part of the country, 6 to 12 inches in some areas along i-90. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. coming up, the headline about president trump and his taxes this morning. also ahead, caught on camera, the terrifying moment when ice comes crashing through a driver's windshield. and stormy daniels' big reveal. what this sketch has to do with her alleged affair with president trump.

we're back now with video of a close call in vermont. a chunk of ice flew off a truck crashing into a driver's windshield. amazingly, that driver was not injured, but he says if someone had been sitting in his passenger seat, that may have been a different story. well, starbucks says it will close more than 8,000 stores across the country for several hours next month to train employees about racial bias. it's in response to the arrest of two black men for trespassing at a philadelphia store as they waited for their friend. now, starbucks calls the incident regrettable and says the manager never intended for them to be arrested. her call to 911, though, has now been released. >> hi, i have two gentlemen in my cafe that are refusing to make a purchase or leave. >> the manager who has now left the company reportedly told a

local news website that a corporate policy for starbucks in that area bans loitering and management has discretion to enforce the policy. i should point out the one-day closure will cost starbucks 12 million dpz. the governor of missouri is refusing to step down despite new calls from lawmakers in his own party to resign because of a deepening ethics scandal. governor eric greitens is facing a possible second felony charge for allegedly misusing charity donor lists for political fund-raising. now, this comes amid a sex scandal in which he is accused of abuse and invasion of privacy. he denies the accusations and is vowing to stay in office. if you haven't filed your federal income taxes yet, don't panic. yesterday was the tax deadline, as you know, but after major crash on its website the irs is now giving everyone another day to file pushing the deadline to midnight tonight, and if you need more time, you're not alone. the white house says because of the complexity of his return, president trump has filed a
