this morning. last time we had an earthquake, we had thunderstorms and hail. no coincidence. none whatsoever. no such thing as a coincidence. we have a chance of light showers tonight. the storm impact scale is a one, light. slight chance of lightning, thunder, maybe snow level down to about 3,500 feet. let's talk about what's going to happen today with your accuweather 12-hour planner. mid to upper 40s at 7:00, not quite as chilly. sunshine today. take the sunglasses. 55 to 58. keep the umbrella at home if you're home by 4:00. this is definitely going to be a nighttime chance of showers. not all of us will get it. i'll explain all about that coming up. here is alexis. >> taking a look at the roads this morning, we don't have any major blocking issues. overnight road work lingers in oakland. keeping an eye on northbound 880 and our other slow spot we can

count on this time of day, westbound 205 to 580, 15 miles an hour, 16 miles an hour. that's starting to fill in, the usual grind for seven to eight miles out of tracy. bay bridge toll plaza we have a stackup on the cash lanes of the toll plaza. no delays for fast track or car pool. we should have the metering lights turning on in about 20 minutes. we're minutes away from the 112th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake that hit at 5:12 a.m. >> reporter: the fire chief is at the microphone right now. right next to her is a wreath that they laid this morning to honor the late mayor ed lee. you can see a lot of people out here were wearing period attire. this is something people do every year to honor the survivors and the thousands who died in the 1906 earthquake. it was a 7.8 quake that hit at 5:12 in the morning.

at 5:12 this morning, you'll be hearing sirens and we'll take the event live while they honor those people. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. there are new developments in the san francisco hunter's point shipyard cleanup. supervisor malia cohen is calling for a hearing for the u.s. navy and contractor tech. the examiner reports cohen is upset with the lack of accountability. developers were planning to build more than 12,000 housing units at the shipyard. plans are on hold until next year. the investigation into why a southwest engine broke apart 32,000 feet in the air is just getting under way. you can see it right there on the monitor. the safety officials say that engine showed metal fatigue. one woman died and passengers on other southwest flights in the bay area are reacting.

abc 7 news was at oakland international airport. some passengers say they felt a bit conflicted about flying. >> a little uneasy. i think everybody would be hearing this situation. so you get on the flight and you hope that the airlines is taking care of what they need to take care of. >> southwest has 500 the fleet. >> the pilot is being called a hero. tammie jo schultz is one of the first final meal fighter pilots in the u.s. navy. she faced resistance because of her gender but went on to train pilots in the military before becoming a captain for southwest. funeral preparations are under way for former first lady barbara bush. >> she died with family by her

side yesterday. private services will happen saturday in texas. 28 years ago while she was first lady bush gave the commencement speech at wellesley college. >> at thend of your life you will never regrt not having passed one more time, winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. you will regret time not spent with a husband, a child, a friend or a parent. >> you can express your condolences and thoughts on our facebook page. barbara bush was 92 years old. cia director mike pompeo traveled to north korea over the easter weekend for a meeting with kim jong-un. the meeting was part of an effort to lay the groundwork for direct talks between kim and president trump about the country's nuclear weapons program. mr. trump said details of a

summit with kim ng-un are we have learned that german chancellor angela merkel will be coming to the u.s. next week and she'll be meeting with president trump at the white house. the meeting is set for next friday, april 27th. the two leaders will discuss a variety of topics including nato and no doubt they'll probably talk about russia and its involvement in syria as well. merkel was just recently sworn in as chancellor for her fourth term last month. >> jessica, thank you. happening today, and emergency preparedness exercise at the sonoma county airport. local, state and federal agencies will work together in a simulated aircraft crash. that drill is required by the faa. it will happen between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 this afternoon. never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. there's the warmer weather were talked about this morning. anywhere from about four to nine degrees milder. let's take a look at temperatures.

mid to upper 40s throughout our inland east bay neighborhoods until we get to pittsburgh. you're the exception at 51. we've got upper 40s along the east bayshore all the way down to 50 in san jose, mountain view, 48 in san carlos. pacifica at 46 along with novato. vallejo 48, about 43 up around santa rosa. san jose, 87 near the shark tank. on the once again. exercising, die during the day. the rain doesn't come in until after the sun sets. if you're out and about, you may need a light jacket with temperatures in the low 60s. in the peninsula, 51 this morning, 60 at 4:00, back down to 54 at 8:00. in the east bay, no rain during that time frame with temperature 50 at 8:00 to about 60 at 2:00.

tonight, temperatures a little cooler, especially in the north bay. upper 30s there, low to mid 40s east bay and mid to upper 40s around the bay, the south bay and towards the coast. look at that. no rain by tomorrow morning. taking a look at some road work in the east bay once again. northbound 880 is heavy for the bridge work between 23rd and 29th. things are getting a little better. we did have a full closure. everyone forced off at 23rd until about five, ten minutes ago. some lanes are open. we could have some lanes closed until about 6:00 this morning. they they'll probably pick that up ahead of schedule. you've got about an 18-minute delay. that's improving from a 30-minute delay than it was a short time ago. emeryville starting to fill in and slow down. all the folks heading towards the maze and no metering lights yet for the bay bridge toll plaza. your commute from the east bay to marin is about to get a little faster. the third lane eastbound on the

the manhunt for reese, accused of shooting her husband in minnesota before taking off for ft. myers, florida. known as losing streak lois to police, be fended pamly hutchison, her next alleged victim. i'm victor oquendo, abc news, miami. san francisco police are looking for a man suspected of animal abuse. a dog died. police released this video showing a man and woman having an argument. at one point he grabs the woman's four-month-old cocker spaniel and slams it to the ground. the suspect is identified as a 23-year-old man from san francisco. he's wanted on felony animal cruelty. >> state legislation that might project pg&e and other utilities from liability just gained initial approval. senate bill 108 comes months after the devastating october

north bay fires. according to the mercury news, the bill would require utilities companies to file safety-related updates with the state puc including safety plans to mitigate risk from wildfires and other major events. critics argue it paves the path for higher electricity and gas bills because it would allow companies to bundle rate requests with the safe te report. a city of santa rosa preparing for a major budget crisis. the press democrat reports the city manager is preliminarily proposing an increase of $62 million in next year's budget, much of it needed to replace a large section of the water system in fountain grove. officials say the gas was released from pipes and sucked back into the water mains. the project is estimated to cost $43 million. santa rosa high school students on the verge of a dream come true, playing at carnegie

hall. some of these students lost their homes during the north bay wildfires, but they still have their voices. they earned an invitation last year. but the fires hit and the group didn't have the $100,000 they needed to attend. that's when a billionaire philanthropist stepped in with a last-minute challenge. offering the choir $15,000 and promised to match the amount that students raised. >> when people see that other people want to support them, they work much harder, get motivated and do much better. >> students met the challenge, and flights and hotel are booked. they'll be performing in new york city on april 29th. now an update we first brought you yesterday. 120 people are displaced in san jose after a massive apartment fire. they have a place to stay along with a meal this morning. five-alarm fire destroyed three

apartments. smoke damage made all 36 units uninhabitable. san jose activated its emergency operations center to help displaced familyies. >> this is a big trauma. everybody here is traumatized. we want to do the little things that can make it more bearable. there's a reason we call it comfort food. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. officials say it appears to have started in a kitchen. new developments surrounding a controversial bill that would force cities to build more housing. former san francisco supervisor and current state senator scott weiner sponsored the bill. it was voted against 6-4, meaning it won't be moving forward. he argued it would alleviate traffic and provide more affordable homes. those against it said it would lead to widespread displacement. soda fans should probably avoid a costco food court in san

that has really filled in. slight delays for ace one this morning, running into freight train traffic around livermore. ace 3 scheduled to leave on time. 43 b.a.r.t. trains in service. normal service, no delays for muni. shaig county is backing a lawsuit against a california sanctuary law. the board of supervisors voted to support the trump administration's suit yesterday. san diego joins orange county and nine cities that have passed anti sanctuary resolutions. it limits state and local authority cooperation with immigration officials. since january the law led to the release of nearly 300 criminal suspects who would have been turned over to immigration authorities. natasha, the president tweeting about that this morning. this tweet says there is a resolution going californ california. so many want out of this ridiculous crime infested and breeding concept.

san francisco earthquake. 5:12 sirens sounded to mark the moment the ground shook. usgs report out today estimates at least 800 people could be killed in a magnitude seven quake on the hayward fault. hundreds more could die from fire after the quake along the 52-mile fault. from our live desk, the president has confirmed this morning the director of the cia mike pompeo met with north korean leader kim jong-un. the pair met last week. in a tweet this morning the president also confirmed a summit between him and kim jong-un is now being planned. number four, the ntsb says the blown jet engine of the southwest airlines plane that made an emergency landing showed evidence of metal fatigue. a 43-year-old woman died. flags at the white house are flying at half staff this morning in honor of former first lady barbara bush. she passed away yesterday at the age of 92.

saturday in texas. >> here is a picture from the white house this morning where flags are flying at half staff. in recent years, bash are bush had been hospitalized numerous times battling congestive heart failure. abc's cokie roberts shared her thoughts this morning on gma. >> she understood that as first lady she had a pulpit and she used it and continues to use it even after her passing. >> former president h.w. bush is said to be broken hearted after losing his wife of 73 years. in a statement his chief of staff revealing that he held her hand all day and was at her side when she left this good earth. barbara bush came to the bay area at least four times during. she campaigned for him in 1988 and two years later back stumping for former governor pete wilson.

in 1992 mrs. bush was back in san francisco where she made a then controversial statement that family values are shared by gay and straight people alike. we often here about the san an dry yas fault. today the usgs is introducing a study saying the hayward fault is much more dangerous. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live for us in berkeley. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. the usgs will present these predictions right here at berkeley's brand new football stadium that was built to be seismically safe. the hayward fault runs right underneath this campus. the usgs report lays out what would happen if there was a magnitude 7 earthquake on the hayward fault. it says if it happens, at least 800 people could be killed and another 18,000 injured. what makes the hayward fault so dangerous is it runs through the east bay, one of the most populated sections of the bay

area. 2 million people live on the fault. the usgs calls it a tectonic ticking time bomb. they will make a presentation about their findings. they'll make presentations in fremont and also at berkeley's memorial stadium. they want to warn people and encourage them to be prepared. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> let's talk more about that. there are things we can do right now to be more prepared for an earthquake or other natural disaster. we're encouraged to have emergency kits fully stocked with items including battery operated radios and flashlights with extra batteries, a minimum three-day supply of food and water for everyone in the family and also a manual can opener and any medications you may need or first aid supplies. prepare north cal's guidelines for your emergency kit and developing a plan for your family are posted at abc7news.com. a southwest airlines plane that took off from la gar yeah showed evidence of metal fatigue. the flight was forced to make an

emergency landing in philadelphia. it's believed the plane's left engine exploded, shattering the window in the 14th row. 43-year-old jennifer riordan was sitting in the seat. witnesses say she was partially sucked out of the plane. one passenger talking to "good morning america." marty martinez said he reached for his laptop to contact loved once on facebook live. >> i didn't know how many minutes. i'm frantically looking for my credit card and trying to punch in the number so i could speak to the outside world. then i came to the moment where i had wi-fi. i thought these are my last few moments on earth. i want people to know what happened. >> the ntsb is focusing on the engine to determine why it came apart. the investigation is expected to take 12 to 15 months. >> jennifer riordan worked for

wells fargo as vice president of community relations. she was married with two children. her family put out a statement last night saying she is the bedrock of our family. she and mike wrote a love story unlike any other. her beauty and love is evident through her children. >> the plane was in california on monday. the plane took off from sacramento monday afternoon, from there to las vegas, then denver, back to vegas, then to phoenix on monday night. yesterday morning it went to nashville and laguardia. minutes after it took off at laguardia the engine failed and the plane was diverted to philadelphia. the same plane flew from oakland to albuquerque friday afternoon. a police officer is hospitalized after being hit by a car. officers spotted the mercedes in the riff mond district and booked hir on suspicion of

hit-and-run. we're told the officer is alert and conscious and his injuries are not considered life-threatening. a petaluma mother and her friend are expected to face manslaughter charges in court. police say the two did not call for help when the woman's 16-year-old son overdosed on drugs. harrison's roommate caught them trying to put the unconscious teen in a vehicle. the teen later died at the hospital. police say when they arrived both suspects were under the influence of drugs. never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. look at the temperatures in the north bay. 41 in clear lake and guerneville. we've got napa and petaluma at 45. american canyon at 44. novato and tiburon at 46. the warm spot -- 50 in san francisco, alameda and san jose, those are the warm spots. the rest of us in the mid to

upper 40s. here is a look at the traffic this morning, and the quiet weather we're seeing on the south beach cam, during the commutes the roads will remain dry. it's going to be calm. if you're one of those second shift workers, even umbrella, you'll need it after the 7:00. more than likely after the 8:00 hour. let's talk about what's going on in the peninsula. 51 this morning, cloudy. a lot of cloud cover until noon. a few breaks in the cloud cover this afternoon. about 60 at 4:00. how about the east bay, cloud cover all the way up to about 57. back in the mid 50s by 8:00. tonight's temperatures will be cooler. a little more like they were yesterday with 30s developing in the north bay. you're the first to clear out of clouds tonight. low to mid 40s in the inland east bay neighborhoods. i've got some good news coming in the next weather. the rain is not going to reach all of our neighborhoods tonight.

motorized scooters will need a permit to be parked on san francisco streets. scooters started popping up over the last few weeks and neighbors became fed up with riders leaving them all over the place. scooter operator lime bike says it will now tell customers they can't ride on sidewalks and have to provide a photo showing the scooter is parked safely. san francisco officials will unveil plans for friday's annual 420 pot celebration at golden gate park. preparations are already well under way. city officials plan to announce their plans to ensure that this year's 420 is safe for visitors and residents. last year the event became a city sanctioned event. people still talking about beyonce's performance at coachella. now a local church is celebrating the icon. you can take part. an update on the breaking

let's take a look at how this storm affects anybody today. not really. stays offshore the entire day. it pushes extra clouds across the northern three-quarters of the state, maybe scattered light showers between chico and also eureka, lower elevations rain, higher elevations snow. 73 in l.a. 84 in palm springs. we have to go all the way through tomorrow morning to start finding some accumulating snow up in the' era. then it's mainly going to be around kirkwood. my accuweather forecast, maybe an inch or two possible in other

neighborhoods. the 60s start friday. mid 60s saturday through tuesday. i do have a big update on the breaking news coming in from florida where a school bus overturned this morning after a crash. at least six kids hurt there. the bus crashed with a semi crash. this is in brooksville jurgt north of tampa. florida highway patrol told the abc station there the semi truck failed to fully stop for a red light, partially entered the intersection and hit the bus. we have also confirmed at least 18 high school students were on board at the time of the crash. those half dozen students that were hurt, they remain hospitalized right now . in a memo sent yesterday, elon musk says they're set to do

some rain near the coast, the peninsula, the east bay hills and the south bay. look at this, by the time we start tomorrow's morning commute, it's gone. you can see the increasing sunshine as we head through tomorrow afternoon. less than .1 inch of rain from this particular shower, maybe a little more in the santa cruz mountains. tomorrow we jump a couple of degrees. look at the 60s and 70s friday. that dry warm weekend we've been looking forward to is almost here. alexis? >> if you've been looking forward to a quiet commute, you've got one so far this morning. we only have a couple very minor issues. just hearing about some type of hazard, eastbound 580 before the 680 merge in dublin, not sure if it's a disabled vehicle or debris. we're still in the green. that's the countercommute direction as well. heavier here through the bay bridge toll plaza. we got official word the metering lights were turned on about 5:31 this morning.

you'll likely have a slight delay as you approach the toll booth. mass transit, no delays. we're following breaking news right now in san jose. want to show you these images from sky 7 live over a house fire. this is at half pence way. according to google, that's near the berryessa creek park and the piedmont area. you can see smoke coming from the roof of this residential home. appears to be a one or two-story home. you can see a lot of firefighters out there. at least one ladder engine truck up right now fighting the fire. looks like there's still some flames coming from the top of the home as well as a lot of smoke right now. it looks like they are working that fire right now from the ground, and then again from that ladder truck right now.

i want to come back to this fire that is going on right now in san jose. this is on half pence way near berryessa creek park. you see a lot of smoke there coming from a residential home. we believe this is a one or two-story residential home. you can see a little bit of orange glow there coming from the top of the how many. it looks like there are flames there, very active fire, with firefighters on the ground right now. at least one ladder truck is up as well. this is brand new. we have just been able to confirm that there are at least five people displaced by this fire. again, five people affected by what is going on right now in san jose. as we zoom out a little live from sky 7, you can see what a big response this is. a lot of fire trucks there, all those flashing lights, and still
