it's >> sirens wailed this morning to commemorate the 112th anniversary of the great quake that devastated san francisco and as the bay area remembers the 1906 quake, scientists issue an alarming new prediction for the hayward fault and the destruction it may bring us. the hayward fault may be less well-known but seismologists call it a time bomb that could kill nearly 1,000 people and injure tens of thousands more. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the event highlighting the worst-case

scenario. amy? >> reporter: they didn't sugar coat it. they had an event of haywired as if a 7-magnitude earthquak eartk the hayward fault. scary to think about but they said we must think about it and be prepared. scientists say we know shaking like this is coming so they have a goal for us. they say if we put their science to work and get prepared they think we can outsmart disaster. >> and that's what these scenarios are all about. it takes an incredible amount of effort across a wide range of expertise to try to make these hazards real before they happen. >> reporter: the scenario they're playing out today is a 7-magnitude earthquake on the hayward fault, about 2 million people live around it in the east bay. they think at least 800 people would die. they call it a tectonic time bomb waiting to go off. >> the last time it ruptured in

earthquake is 1868. out of people's memories and the idea is we have had a lot of urbanization and population growth since then and the idea to raise awarens about how to prepare in the event something could happen. >> reporter: geologists say the magnitude 6 in napa would pale in comparison to a big one here. >> hayward fault would unleash an energy release about 30 times bigger in this scenario. bisecting a highly urbanized area where millions more people live. this scenario is at least ten times worse than loma created in 1989. >> reporter: they boiled all of this done to a few minutes but they say they have 594 research published papers, that's how serious they are about this situation. they say we need to take it seriously, get your earthquake kit together and get to know your neighbors. a key they say during a disaster. live from fremont, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. and the alarming forecast

about the hayward fault comes as san francisco remembers the 1906 great quake that burned down a lot of the city. this morning's annual dmem ratio offered a message of preparedness and a tribute to the late mayor ed lee. >> reporter: the ceremony this morning, in san francisco commemorating the 1906 earthquake may feel familiar. it started with a telling of the devastating event and fires that followed. >> friday, april 20th, 1906, 5:00 a.m. the fire finally holes and the westward progression is halted. >> reporter: a minute of silence for the 3,000 that died and the sirens near the exact time it hit 112 years ago. then a song. ♪ san francisco ♪ open your golden gates >> reporter: but something or more specifically someone was missing. >> we had a great leader doing the job of making sure this fountain ultimately worked and that was ed lee.

>> reporter: mayor lee was a fixture at the ceremony through the years. he died in december but his memory lives on. >> ladies and gentlemen, we dedicate this wreath in honor of the 43rd mayor of san francisco and all those that perished in the great earthquake and fire in 1906. >> reporter: they moved on to paint this hydrant gold. it had water after the earthquake and credited for saving the mission district from flames. the message this morning from firefighters and police officers -- be ready. the next big one could come at any time. >> 72 hours, be ready to take care of yourself for 72 hours. stock up on water and food. >> reporter: organizers say a plaque commemorating the lives lost will be unveiled next year. matt keller, abc7 news. >> there are things to do right now to be ready for earthquake or other natural disaster. enkounlged to have emergency kits stocked with items of battery-operated radios and

low 60s around the bay. up into the north bay. low to mid-60s in the inland east bay neighborhoods and the south bay. here's the way it breaks down. gorgeous shot of the bridge from emeryville this morning. by 4:00 it will be brighter outside. still in the mid-50s at the coast and the rest of us around 60. 8:00, clouds thicken as the sun sets. could be gorgeous, #abc7. love to see it. by midnight, the scattered showers rolling around. we'll drop down to cooler levels tonight. clearing up in the north bay first and 30s and then mid-40s and then mid to upper 40s around bay and the coast. here's a look at a little sunshine sandwich between the clouds over us now and the rain that's going to move in in the evening hours. this area of low pressure like we talked about yesterday heading more south than east now and the big sur coast get the bulk of the weather.

there's the clock from noon up until 3:00, a few stray showers in the higher elevations and the santa cruz mountains but by 7:30 the end of the commute, not much going on. and then you can see the scattered showers coming ashore by about 9:00, 10:00 and the coast and the peninsula, east bay hills and the south bay and 6:00 in the morning it is gone and then partly cloudy and breezy conditions for tomorrow afternoon. in fact, look at the rainfall totals heading through and it's mainly the peninsula and the south bay going to have the best chance. all right. let's talk about my storm concerns. there's not many other than hydroplaning where it does rain. that could be an issue. all right. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. coolest today. even though it's breezy tomorrow, that sun shine will boost our temperatures about 2 to 4 degrees. look at the big jump on friday. 60 at the coast. 80 inland. this is a touch of summer. nearly 20 degrees from the coast to inland sunday from 60s there,
