on the today the woman who wrote the book has a play hoping this month in san jose. joining me self author iris rainer dart and actress susan gundunis. thank you for coming in today. we appreciate it. first off, who wants to tell me about the play is about? perhaps you iris. >> just like beaches made you cry and laugh, the new play at three below in san jose is called the people in the picture. and it's about a very brave jewish woman who in preworld war ii poland was making musical comedy films in spite of all the terrible things happening for the jews at that time. and the story goes back and forth in time to 70s new york where she is now a grandmother trying to pass the culture and what she knows onto a grand child with a daughter who doesn't want her to. >> all right. >> and susan, so fabulously -- i have to say -- plays the grandmother and the young woman and the older woman. it's a very difficult role and she is amazing in it.

>> thank you. >> susan what drew you to it? >> well, when the gugen heims are the producers of show told me they wanted me to sing the role, i felt like i had won the lottery. it is beautifully written. it's an all encompassing role of singing dancing acting. it has humor, passion. it has real life serious moments. but one of the most amazing things is this challenge of going instance taniously from being a young woman in war saw poland in the '30s to bubby which is a jewish grandmother in 1970s new york city. >> she had a lot to live up to because dona murphy prayed the part on a broad want nominated for a tony. this is theater three below in downtown, this is the only the second show they've done.
