connected can no longer support the load. >> today new information emerged about the mother of two who died in that mid-air explosion and the heroic pilot who guided the jet to a safe landing. >> abc news reporter marcy gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: the mangled pieces of southwest airline 1380s engine. >> the engine has a fire. >> reporter: the plane key pressurizing, passenger jennifer reardon sucked part way out of this blown out window. >> window go out, lady go out the window, and we couldn't pull her in. a guy helped, we got her pulled in. we tried to resuscitate her. >> reporter: the mother of two dying of blunt force trauma. the captain tammy joe schultz one of the first female fighter pilots making an incredible emergency landing in philadelphia. schultz then going back hugging passengers. >> she is phenomenal.

she is amazing. >> reporter: this the second engine failure like this with a southwest boeing 737 in two years. a source telling abc news it happened with similar engines with seemingly similar failures, a fan blade breaking at about the same spot sending shrapnel spewing forward. >> we are very concerned about this particular event. engine failures like this should not occur obviously. we feel that this is a deeper issue. we have the capability to issue urgent safety recommendations. >> reporter: southwest has now ordered enhanced accelerated inspection of its fleet. marcy gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> southwest airlines tonight released a statement on behalf of the crew of flight 1380. it reads in part, our hearts are heavy. on behalf of the entire crew, we appreciate the outpouring of support from the public and our coworkers as we reflect on one family's profound loss. the statement is signed by captain tammy joe schultz and

first officer darren elisor. >> a flight from london heathrow is forced to return after smoke was seen coming from an engine today. look at that. firefighters at hartsfield-jackson airport doused the smoking engine with foam moments after it landed. that's what you're seeing there. the airbus jet was towed back to the concourse where passengers were let off. no one was hurt. >> sad news tonight involving 9 coach of the warriors playoff opponent the spurs. game three is in san antonio. head coach gregg popovich may not be there. his wife erin passed away at the age of 67. abc7 sports anchor was in san antonio. >> this was shocking news for everyone in san antonio. apparently erin popovih had been ill for an extended period of time and their family was so private it made the news even more surprising. greg and erin popovich met while he was koefrping at the air force academy. they had two children jill and

mikey. r.c. buford had this statement on her passing today. we mourn the loss of erin. she was a strong, wonderful, kind, intelligence woman who provided love, support and humor to all of us. today at the warriors practice head coach steve kerr who played for and considered coach popovich as mentor was too upset to speak. but kevin durant, who like everyone was shocked when he heard the news, tried to put the sad situation in perspective. >> man. prayers and condolences to all the family. man. >> reporter: it has not been determined if gregg popovich will be court side tomorrow for game three and the spurs are asking the media to respect the family's privacy. reporting in san antonio, mike shumann, abc7 news. >> well, 400 members of the california national guard are

now at the border with mexico. the mobilization was announced earlier tonight by governor brown's office. it's part of the president's plan to secure troops at the border as part of immigration enforcement. however, california troops will not take part in immigration enforcement. they instead will focus on drug crimes and human trafficking. >> happening now, a filipino peace activist has been denied entry into the united states and is set to board a plane back to the philippines early tomorrow morning. >> activists here are demanding to know why. abc7 news reporter lilian kim is live at sfo. lilian. >> reporter: dan andal ma, peace activist is scheduled to fly home in an hour and a half. customs and border patrol insist this has nothing to do with politics. supporters of jerome a ba mobilized as soon as they realized the peace activist from the philippines wasn't going to get past customs. >> 8:25 his flight arrived.

two hours later he didn't come out. four hours later we're asking where is he? >> reporter: he has been refused entry into the united states and is in holding until the next flight to manila until thursday morning. the reverend spoke to him over the phone at the consulate. >> he sounded tired and exhausted and worn out. he said they kept telling him you have no business here on u.s. soil, which is very confusing because he was granted a u.s. visa. >> reporter: but a source at customs and border protection says there was an issue with his visa. no specifics were given, only that it was over the process and how it was obtained. his supporters aren't buying it and are disheartened at least for now won't be able to learn about the humanitarian crisis unfolding from him directly. >> we want to hear from people who have experienced this, who are also experiencing the human rights abuses which are happening in rural areas. >> reporter: supporters say they'll be fighting for his entry into the u.s. until his scheduled flight takes off. at sfo, lilian kim, abc7 news.

>> five people managed to escape this burning fishing boat on humboldt bay this morning. this is video from the coast guard. a good samaritan on another boat rescued all five after they abandoned ship. the coast guard is monitoring the water for pollution. 1500 gallons of diesel fuel was on board. >> bart police looking fora a man captured on cell phone video committing lewd acts on himself on a pittsburgh bound train. the rider showed this photo of the man on abc7 news. she tells us the man propositioned her and touched himself last friday. the victim called bart police, but officers couldn't locate the man. he was last seen leaving the train at the daly city bart station. >> new developments in the ghost ship fire civil lawsuit. sky 7 was over the scene today. abc7 news i-team reporter dan noyes reports that lawyers were going through debris at the warehouse looking at the fire's cause an origin. the fire in december of 2016

killed 36 people, as you may recall. two men charged in the fire, master tenant derek almena and creative director max harris are due in court friday for a hearing to reduce their bail. now, coming up tomorrow at 11:00, dan will have an exclusive interview with almena's wife. she gives new details about what happened that night, conditions inside the ghost ship, and what may have led to the tragedy. >> it may be spring, but we're not through with winter just quite yet. some snow came down in the sierra today. and in wine country tonight, concern about a late frost ruining grapes. abc7 news reporter kate larson has the details. >> it's probably the first stage of bad break. this one right here. >> reporter: juan martinez showing his grape buds in napa which like many variety broke early this year in february. >> as soon as the buds break, you have to watch for frost protection. >> reporter: martinez has been working with wine grapes for
