breast-feed if she chooses. the senate unanimously approved the rule change after the illinois democrat became the first sitting senator to give birth. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, april 19th. this is "world news now." we begin with the deadly southwest airlines explosion. some newly ordered federal inspections come nearly a year after the engine's maker recommended that move. we're learning that jennifer riordan, the passenger killed in that blast was wearing her seat belt at the time. a medical examiner ruled she died from blunt impact trauma to her head, neck and torso. marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: investigators now examining the mangled pieces of flight 1380's engine. ripped apart at 30,000 feet, the plane depressurizing. passenger jennifer riordan sucked partway out of this window.

fleet. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> southwest's entire fleet is made up of 737. we turn now to the latest internal white house dust-up on sanctions against russia blocked by president trump. he now says he'll hit russia with new sanctions as soon as they deserve it. and he repeated his claim that there's nobody tougher on russia than him. the new economic adviser, larry kudlow, apologized to nikki haley after suggesting she was confused when she announced new sanctions. at the same time, at the same news conference with the japanese prime minister, the president warned that he could still pull out of a planned meeting with the north korean leader if it's not fruitful. the president said cia director mike pompeo got along well with kim jong un during a recent secret meeting. he also said there was a good chance of winning the release of three americans who are held in

more praise for the pilots, including captain tammie jo shults, who was one of the first female navy pilots and whose calm demeanor came through on the radio. >> is your airplane physically on fire? >> no, it's not on fire, but part of it's missing. they said there's a hole and someone went out. >> reporter: this boeing 737 was delivered 18 years ago but the engine rebuilt in 2012 and southwest says was not in need of an overhaul. but that apparent failure in which shrapnel spews forward rather than back to the engine is very similar to this 2016 southwest incident. two similar incidents. are you concerned about the 737 fleet? >> we are very concerned about their particular event. engine failures like this should not occur, obviously. >> reporter: the faa has been working on a new rule which would require more inspections of older, heavily used engines

in the 737 fleet. that rule has not been finalized. david kerley, abc news, philadelphia. and just hours ago, a delta flight was forced to make an emergency landing after the pilot reported smoke pouring from an engine. the plane returned to atlanta shortly after takeoff where fire crews were waiting to hose it down. the london-bound flight was carrying 247 passengers. last night, the president said he will impose sanctions on russia as soon as they quote/unquote deserve it. nikki haley had said that there would be new sanctions. larry kudlow suggested nikki haley was confused. kudlow later apologized. >> there's been nobody tougher on russia than president trump.
