making news in america this morning, safety concerns after that midair explosion on a southwest airlines flight. the new inspections being ordered. thousands of planes now affected. >> we are very concerned about this particular event. >> as we learn new details about what happened just before that mother of two was nearly sucked out of the window and this morning the hero pilot praised for her nerves of steel. the struggle she overcame early in her career before making history. president trump speaks out about his planned one-on-one talks with kim jong-un warning what he'll do if no progress is made. and hear what he's now saying about the fate of three american prisoners held in north korea. also this morning -- ♪ purple rain purple rain the announcement expected today concerning the death of prince.

magician david copperfield takes the stand forced to reveal one of his famous tricks. and the first u.s. senator to give birth in office prepares to return to work and forces a rule change on capitol hill. and we do say good morning on this thursday. we're going to start with the new details about that deadly explosion on board a southwest airlines jet. >> a medical examiner has determined that jennifer riordan, the passenger killed in that explosion, died from blunt impact trauma to her head, neck and torso. >> federal regulators are now ordering new inspections after finding signs of metal fatigue on the broken fan blade that triggered the blast. it was nearly one year ago when the engine's maker recommended taking that exact action. this morning, new concerns about the safety of thousands of planes. the faa will soon order mandatory inspections on the same type of engine that

exploded on the southwest airline killing a passenger. these engines power nearly 7,000 737s around the world. >> we are very concerned about this particular event. engine failures like this should not occur obviously. >> reporter: the southwest flight was heading from new york to dallas when the plane's engine exploded at 32,000 feet shattering a window and killing passenger jennifer riordan. the mother of two was nearly sucked out of the plane even though investigators say she was wearing a seat belt. the pilots took desperate action banking the plane more than 40 degrees to the left instead of a normal steep bank of 25 degrees. for 22 minutes the engine violently shaking and vibrating out of balance. it's the second engine failure like this on a southwest flight in two years. a source telling abc news that it happened with a similar engine with similar failures, a fan blade breaking at about the forward.

>> if this source is correct, what does that say? >> well, you can say a couple of things. you can say that there might be a manufacturing issue there. it might be an inspection issue. it might be a maintenance issue. we want to look at all of that, find out what happened here. and this should not happen. >> reporter: witnesses say the hero pilot had nerves of steel as she guided the crippled jet in for a landing. tammie jo shults say she and her crew were simply doing their job. >> she's phenomenal. she's amazing. >> reporter: shults was one of the first women to fly navy fighter jets, but her career did not get off to an easy start. in the book, "military fly moms," she opens up about trying to become a fighter pilot in the '70s and early '80s. shults attended an aviation lecture by a retired colonel and she tells the book's author the colonel asked her if she was lost. she says, he allowed me to stay but assured me there were no professional women pilots. she was rejected by the air force after college but was eventually accepted into the navy. she would later become the first woman to fly the navy's newest

jet at the time, the f-18 hornet. quite a hero there, and the southwest pilots managed to land that plane despite hitting the pavement at 190 miles an hour, that, by the way, 55 miles faster than normal. the faa has been working on a new rule that would require more inspections of older engines in the 737 fleet, but that rule has not been finalized. the faa is investigating after a delta flight was forced to return to atlanta because of an engine fire. the pilot reported smoke billowing from the right engine on wednesday. the airbus 330 had just taken off for london. nobody in that incident was hurt. and president trump is sending a new warning to north korea. he says he'll walk out of his upcoming meeting with kim jong-un if things don't go his way. at the same time the president is answering new questions about the russia investigation and special counsel robert mueller's job security. abc's janai norman has the latest on both stories. janai, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. denuclearization of the korean peninsula is a top priority for

president trump in his anticipated meeting with kim jong-un, but he is still facing some hurdles before that sit-down ever happens. the secret is out. the white house confirming cia director mike pompeo traveled to pyongyang over easter weekend to meet with north korean dictator kim jong-un. >> had a great meeting with kim jong-un and got along with him really well, really great and he's that kind of a guy. he's very smart but gets along with people. >> reporter: that meeting marking the highest level meeting between a u.s. official and north korean leader in nearly two decades and it's expecting to be topped in the coming weeks as president trump plans to sit down with kim in may or early june hoping to convince him to give up his nuclear program. >> if i think that it's a meeting that is not going to be fruitful, we're not going to go. if the meeting when i'm there is not fruitful, i will respectfully leave the meeting. >> reporter: but despite those

big foreign policy plans, the russia investigation is still front and center. >> there's no collusion. there was no collusion with russia. >> reporter: during wednesday's press conference with japanese prime minister shinzo abe, president trump downplayed speculation over whether he'll fire special counsel robert mueller or deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. >> they've been saying i'm going to get rid of them for the last three months, four months, five months, and they're still here. >> reporter: and as far as his face-to-face with kim jong-un, president trump says the u.s. is negotiating to free three american prisoners being held in north korea. but at this point finding a secure location for kim and trump to meet hasn't been easy. diane and kendis. >> that's janai norman for us live in d.c. thanks, janai. breaking overnight a massive power outage on puerto rico. the entire island and its 1.4 million american citizens residents are right now are

living without electricity. the cause, an excavator knocked out a high voltage line. the same subcontractor was blamed for an outage last week. puerto rico's governor is pushing for a new company. the blackout did not affect though the major league baseball game that was played in puerto rico. the stadium ran on generators for all 16 innings until the twins beat the indians, but look at this, the stadium provided the only light for miles. >> wow. and most of oklahoma is under a state of emergency facing an historic wildfire threat. the state's two largest wildfires have burned through more than 500 square miles with the largest fire only 3% contained. more high winds are expected today before rain moves in by the weekend. in the meantime, hawaii is bracing for a second round of torrential rains and flash floods in kauai. more than two feet of rain fell in just 24 hours, triggering mudslides, washing away roads and downing power lines. the coast guard used rafts and helicopters to rescue more than 340 people. let's take a look, a closer one, at your forecast for this

we're back with video from the shore of lake michigan where the owners of this house were literally living on the edge. they were sitting in their kitchen when they heard a loud crash. that crash, the porch broke off into the water. the erosion is so bad, they've now abandoned the house. in northern california, they're facing a dire new warning about the risk for a major earthquake. using new technology, experts now predict at least 800 people would be killed in a magnitude 7 quake along the hayward fault which runs under oakland and berkeley. they say there's about a 30% chance of a quake that strong hitting along that fault line in the next 25 years. prosecutors in minnesota are expected to announce today

whether anyone will face charges in the death of prince. the singer died two years ago from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, an opioid 50 times stronger than heroin. investigators have tried to figure out how he obtained it. friends say he struggled with extreme pain after years of performing. the woman known on social media as the cocaine babe has been sentenced to eight years in prison. prosecutors say melina roberge helped two canadians smuggle more than 200 pounds of drugs inside suitcases on a cruise ship in australia. it was the largest drug bust in australian history. she was accused of using the plot to gain followers on instagram. she'll be eligible for parole in 2021. for the first time in 35 years, a movie theater has opened in saudi arabia. "black panther" was screened at the new amc theater in riyadh, the capital. it was seen by men and women. the ban was only recently lifted as the crown prince implements a number of social reforms including allowing women to

worth, texas, exploded into a pile of rubble. ooh. a driver of the suv that crashed into that house said his brakes failed. he then slammed into the house and ruptured a gas line. three people in the house were injured but are expected to fully recover. an officer at the scene was also treated for minor injuries. magician david copperfield has been forced to reveal some tricks of the trade after getting sued by a fan. >> a volunteer picked from the audience says he was badly injured while copperfield was making him quote/unquote disappear. so copperfield had to explain to the court how that trick was done. abc's clayton sandell has his heated testimony from the case. >> reporter: a good magician never reveals his secrets, but that's exactly what david copperfield is now doing, part of a lawsuit filed against him by gavin cox, who says he was seriously injured at the mgm grand in vegas participating in the lucky 13, a signature trick to make a group vanish then

reappear. in heated testimony copperfield was asked about how the trick works by rushing participants backstage. >> when they're up on that stage, do you tell them where they're going? >> they are not told in advance. but every single move they make they're instructed where to go. >> you know, mr. copperfield, we're not going to get along if you keep doing this, okay? >> i'm just trying to tell the truth. >> reporter: cox says the pathway was dark filled with hazards causing him to fall suffering brain damage and racking up $400,000 in medical bills. >> if there was a piece of debris in the middle of the way, if we were forcing him to do it, all these hypothetical things then, of course, it would be the fault of us. >> reporter: copperfield's team says that over the years, around 100,000 people have participated in this trick and that its history speaks for itself but it is no longer part of his show. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. authorities in philadelphia are investigating what's being called the suspicious death of h.r. mcmaster's father.

mcmaster served as president trump's national security adviser before resigning last month. his father died at a retirement community last week after apparently falling on his head. but now staffers at the home say he may not have been treated properly. they claim records about his case may have been falsified. a florida man who's been called the kingpin of robocalls is facing a record $122 million fine. adrian abramovich is accused of triggering nearly 100 million robocalls over a three-month period. those called allegedly tricked consumers into buying vacation packages and time shares. appearing before a senate committee on wednesday, abramovich denied any fraudulent activity. he says the practice known as spoofing is easy to set up and can be done by virtually anyone. >> there's available open software that allows anyone to make thousands of automated phone calls with a click of a button. >> last month alone americans received an estimated 3.2 billion robocalls.

lawmakers want phone companies to offer tools to help people block those calls. olympic athletes demanded action on capitol hill while addressing the abuse scandal involving former doctor larry nassar. gold medal gymnast jordyn wieber accused the u.s. olympic committee of not doing enough to support abuse victims and filed a lawsuit demanding accountability from the committee, from usa gymnastics and michigan state university where nassar worked. meanwhile, gymnast mckayla maroney now claims nassar abused her hundreds of times, saying it happened, quote, every time she saw him. a dominant performance from lebron james last night. he scored the first 16 points for the cavaliers in their win over the pacers. he actually scored 20 in the first quarter which was more than the entire pacers team scored. the rockets and the jazz also won last night. here's more proof that rob gronkowski likes to horse around. the nfl star just bought a minority stake in a racehorse named after him. the 3-year-old colt named gronkowski will race in the kentucky derby.

scooters that say they're in our area. we just drove down the street, couldn't find any on the sidewalk. it appears any that were left out overnight either were charging or perhaps have been confiscated. they are certainly looking for aything that is parked illegally. what a department spokesperson yesterday said is, quote, a flagrant disregard for the rules when they're parked on the sidewalks. san francisco department of public works confiscated 61 dockless electric scooters off the streets less than 24 hours ago. last week 66 scooters were taken after complaints that they were blocking public sidewalks. many people have complained that they're a nuisance. we've even seen them stuck in a tree in jackson square. the board of supervisors voted to require the scooter share programs to seek permits for their vehicles. earlier this week lime bike issued a statement saying they plan to comply and implement new initiatives. also said in part, quote, we recognize we can't fix every
