comey in his own words. this time in newly released copies of memos written while he was fbi director. in them comey details what he says were president trump's strenuous and repeated objections to claims he was with prostitutes in moscow in 2013. on msnbc rachel maddow asked comey about the memos. specifically when he recalled the president saying vladimir putin told him russia had some of the most beautiful hookers in the world. >> he told you that he had a personal conversation with president putin about hookers? >> yes. >> did you believe him or did you think he was speaking hyperbollically? >> he didn't seem to be speaking hyperbolically. >> reporter: the justice department released the memos as part of 15 pages of declassified material handed over to congress. overnight, president trump responding on twitter writing, james comey memos just out and show clearly that there was no collusion and no obstruction. but democrats disagree. house minority leader nancy pelosi tweeting that those memos are, quote, further proof of

donald trump's contempt for the rule of law. his attempts to intimidate, circumvent the law and undermine integrity of law enforcement investigations demand immediate action to protect the mueller investigation. in a joint response three republican lawmakers questioning why comey, quote, chose not to memorialize conversations with president obama, attorney general lynch, secretary clinton, andrew mccabe or others but he immediately began to memorialize conversations with president trump. >> given the nature of the person as i understood the president-elect, he might not tell the truth about those if it ever became an issue, and so i needed a written record. >> reporter: and those memos also show that the president told comey he had serious reservations about then national security adviser michael flynn telling him, quote, the guy has serious judgment issues. kenneth and diane. >> all right. the plot thickens. janai norman for us live from d.c. thanks, janai. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani has joined president trump's legal team saying he hopes to negotiate a

quick end to the russia investigation. giuliani is a former u.s. attorney and the president's longtime friend and supporter. he tells "the washington post" he has high regard for special counsel robert mueller and says he's advised the president to allow mueller to do his job. thousand to the other story developing overnight. the ambush killing of two young sheriff's deputies in northern florida. police are trying to determine a motive for the brazen attack at a chinese restaurant. sergeant noel ramirez and deputy taylor lindsey were just eating lunch when investigators say a gunman opened fire through a window killing them both. >> after 26 years of doing this, nothing prepares you for senseless deaths. >> reporter: in an emotional news conference, sheriff bobby schultz called the shooter a coward and described sergeant ramirez and officer lindsey as the best of the best praising their integrity. >> i knew both of them personally, and i can sit here in front of all of you and tell you that i loved them. >> reporter: the shooter identified as a 59-year-old

local man was later found dead in a car near the restaurant. while schultz said there was no apparent motive for this attack yet, he lashed out at what he described as anti-police views across the country. >> what do you expect happens when you demonize law enforcement to the extent that has been demonized every type of hate, every type of putdown that you can think of. the only thing these men were guilty of was wanting to protect you and me. >> reporter: ramirez, a seven-year veteran in law enforcement, was promoted to sergeant less than a year ago. he leaves behind ray wife and children. deputy lindsey joined the sheriff's office three years ago. he was just 25. >> we're going to grieve. we're going to get upset. we're probably going to cuss a little bit, but at the end of the day, we're going to remember those two men for what they are and they're heroes. >> now, police haven't discussed details about the shooter's background but expecting to hear

more at a news conference later today. the fugitive grandmother who led u.s. marshals on a nationwide manhunt has been captured in texas. 56-year-old lois riess was arrested on south padre island near the mexican border. she's accused of murdering her husband in their home near minneapolis last month. then days later killing a woman in florida who looked like her so she could steal her identity. officials say riess was sitting alone at a restaurant last night when the manager recognized her and called authorities. they say she had been living off money she won at a casino in louisiana. southwest airlines says it's now launching a fleetwide engine inspection program after the deadly midair explosion on flight 1380. investigators are focusing on the engine fan blades and looking into whether more thorough inspections should have taken place years ago. we also have some new video showing the moments after the explosion as a flight attendant calls for calm. >> everybody, breathe, we are almost there. >> reporter: airline staffers say the emergency should serve as a reminder that it's important for passengers to listen to those preflight announcements.

a former flight attendant tweeted a picture showing nearly every passenger wearing their oxygen masks the wrong way. he says passengers need to put down the phone, stop with the selfies and listen to the flight attendants. students at more than 2600 schools across the country are expected to stage a walkout this morning to protest gun violence. they're marking the 19 years since the columbine high school shooting. there will not be a walkout at columbine because the school does not hold class on this date. meanwhile teachers in arizona have voted to walk off the job next thursday. they're demanding more education funds and rejecting a proposed 20% pay raise. the strike follows a similar protest in oklahoma and west virginia. time now for a look at your weather for this friday morning. good morning. we are seeing the cold hanging on tough for today and straight through the weekend in the northeast. on top of that blustery winds coming in as well.

in the making. senator tammy duckworth's 10-day-old daughter maile became the first newborn to appear on the senate near, a day after senators ruled babies were allowed in the chamber. federal regulators are hitting wells fargo with a $1 billion fine for widespread consumer abuses. the bank has apologized for forcing auto loan customers to buy car insurance they didn't need and for charging unfair mortgage fees. it's the most aggressive action taken by the trump administration against the bank. now to a big mistake at a bank in europe. officials at deutsche bank accidentally transferred $35 billion to a client's account. that's $5 billion more than the bank's market value and blame an operational error but guess what, they got their money back. >> i can give them my account number if they want to make that mistake again. youtube could be facing an advertiser backlash for running commercials before some very

controversial videos. cnn was first to report that ads from amazon, hilton, under armour and other companies have been running before white supremacy videos and videos on pedophilia, of course, without the company's knowledge. in response under armour has already reportedly pulled its ads. we have a new health alert this morning about romaine lettuce. a nationwide outbreak of e. coli in lettuce from yuma has been expanded to these 16 states. more than 50 people have gotten sick. the cdc says if you have any store bought chopped romaine lettuce including in salads and mixes, throw it out. walmart is changing its employee dress code. workers used to only be allowed to wear a blue or white collared shirt and black or khaki pants. well, now some store will allow any solid colored shirt and blue jeans. walmart says it hopes the relaxed standards will help retain staff. >> that's a change. all right, so coming up, a rare, very rare baseball card sale at an auction. first, some new details about that video shot inside a

we're back now with video of a family hug with a california man released after nearly 25 years on death row. >> vicente benavides was convicted in 1993 of first degree murder and other charges, but a judge recently ruled that false evidence was introduced at the trial. benavides is now 68 years old. he didn't say much to reporters but he did say he's, quote, very happy. >> good for him. and a fraternity at syracuse university has released a new statement this morning about a video sparking outrage across the country. >> on the video students take a vow to always have hatred in their heart for blacks, hispanics and jews, but

overnight the frat said the video was part of a skit saying, quote, our new members are given the opportunity to write and act out a skit in order to roast the active brothers. this year one of these brothers is a conservative republican and the new members roasted him by playing the part of a racist conservative character. still, the fraternity calls the language in the video disgraceful and students on campus are demanding change. abc's maggie rulli has more. now,harde ] police say the suspect, diante yarber, was sitting in his car when they demanded he step out. instead they say he began accelerating back and forth and hit two patrol vehicles. that's when they say that they opened fire. yarber's family is demanding they release dash cam video from that shooting. nearly two years to the day since the sudden death of prince we're now learning new details about how it happened. investigators in minnesota now say prince took counterfeit vicodin not knowing it was laced with deadly amounts of fentanyl but after an extensive two-year investigation, authorities say they will not file criminal charges because they don't know how he obtained those drugs. lance armstrong has agreed to pay $5 million to settle a lawsuit with the federal government. the whistle-blower lawsuit claimed armstrong defrauded the federal government by using performance-enhancing drugs while the postal service sponsored his cycling team. some emotional moments in

after nearly five months without a homicide, richmond police have seen four in this month alone. as soon as we get updates, i'll pass it along. new details about the judge in the brock turner case. judge aaron persky is speaking out about the campaign to recall him. he spoke with the mercury news and says he supports the moveme movement -- the campaign has been fighting to remove persky for handing down a 6-month sentence to brock turner. a measure to recall persky will be on the june happening today, federal regulators are expected to announce a $1 billion fine against wells fargo for forcing
