>> announcer: now from abc7, live breaking news. right away now at 11:00, that breaking news is this large fire in san francisco. we know at least one house is burning in the sunset district. good evening, friends. i'm dion lim. eric has the night off. now, this fire has been going on for about an hour now. we have seen flames shooting from the house, smoke rising into the air. abc7 news reporter just got to the scene a short time ago. lisa, so many firefighters behind you there. >> reporter: dion, we are here in the golden gate heights neighborhood, and it is still a very active scene. the fire is burning this house behind me. the smoke has cleared just a little bit. let's take a look. you can see firefighters, about 100 of them are here. it looks to be a two or a three-story house. it started burning before 10:00, and it is still actively

burning. the focus of the fire seems to be on that top floor. also we saw flames a little while ago coming from the garage. that house of course was evacuated. no one has been injured in this fire, but meantime houses on either side of this fire have been evacuated. firefighters are on the roofs of each of those houses, making sure that the fire does not spread though it does look like it has at least singed one house just to the right of the house that is currently on fire. this is a very large firefighter presence here. about 100 firefighters on this scene actually. a lot of smoke is coming from this fire, and this entire neighborhood is impacted. streets are closed. buses are at a standstill. a lot of police officers are trying to redirect traffic because this fire is by no means under control because, as i said, flames are still shooting from the side of that building,

and they are trying to stop it from going into neighboring homes. we will, of course, stay on this scene. this fire is still, again, not under control, and firefighters are still trying to get control of it. for now, we are live in the golden gate heights neighborhood of san francisco. >> at least good to hear no injuries. lisa, nice hustle. good work from you out there. thank you. to our other big story tonight, across the bay at the coliseum in oakland, those at the a's game will have a memory that will last for a lifetime. abc7 sports mindi bach joining us with the magical performance from sean manaea. this was like a dream. >> it was fun. what makes it so fun is you never know when things like this are going to happen. the last time the red sox were no-hit, 25 years ago when sean manaea was 14 months old. his career e.r.a. against number 4 tonight, 13.50. so he wasn't supposed to throw a no-hitter against a 17-2 boston team, yet he did.

the left-hander walked the first batter of the game but then retired the next three, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. then the offense finally provided some breathing room. marcus semien, solo shot off chris sale. that put the a's up 3-0. sale struck out ten but picked up his first loss of the year. manaea also struck out ten. jackie bradley with a swing and a miss there. with two out in the top of the ninth, hanley ramirez grounds into a force-out. 108 pitches, no hits, no runs for manaea. >> it still doesn't feel real. even after the last out, you know, i couldn't even imagine throwing a no-hitter in the big leagues, especially against a team like the red sox. it's an incredible feeling, and i mean i don't know what to say. >> his first career no-hitter, first career complete game, first career shutout. what's even crazier, is that's

not even why his start of the season is so unique. we're going to tell you why coming up in sports a little bit later. >> even in you're not a baseball fan, it's a great story. in other news, when it comes to sports, it was a special night at the coliseum in more ways than one. >> he's a good luck charm. i know he's got season tickets so hopefully he keeps coming out. >> that good luck charm, this young man you see here. he lost everything in the north bay wildfires, and how the team made his big league dreams come true, that story coming up in just about 15 minutes. well, a defining moment and a surprise announcement coming out of north korea today. the nation's communist leader says he is suspending his country's nuclear program. abc7 news reporter lisa amin ga leeshen has more on the reaction. >> reporter: no more test missile launches. that's the word coming from north korean dictator kim jong-un. north korea's state-run television reported the country

will suspend all nuclear and ballistic missile tests immediately. a nuclear test site will also shut down. kim reportedly told the ruling workers' party, our nation will focus all of its efforts towards socialist economic development. long history of misleading the world, particularly around their weapons and nuclear programs. >> reporter: bay area congressman eric swalwell is on the house intelligence committee. he and abc news consultant colonel stephen ganyard admit they're skeptical. >> they have broken every treaty, every promise they've ever made to us and the south koreans. so this will not just be trust but verify. it will be distrust but verify. >> reporter: still president trump reacted overnight on twitter, writing, this is very good news for north korea and the world. big progress. look forward to our summit. a summit between the two leaders is tentatively set for late may or early june.

>> president trump's impulse is going to have to be under control because he's dealing with somebody who is just as impulsive as he is, and you can imagine how combustible a situation like that is. >> reporter: experts believe north korean missiles are already capable of reaching the u.s. abc7 news. developing news from sonoma county now. a manhunt ended tonight when a suspect in a deadly stabbing was caught. you're looking at that suspect. 18-year-old anthony ibach. sebastopol police tell us he was arrested in san rafael, and they think he may have been heading south towards san jose. a fight apparently broke out after a party near bodega afternoon and west hills circle. witnesses say ibach stabbed 19-year-old cory vaughn in a parking lot. vaughn died around 12:30 this afternoon. a manhunt is on in san francisco's bayview district after six people were shot and one victim died. it happened about 11:00 last

night on third street and quesada avenue. that victim is identified as a 20-year-old man from san francisco. all of the other victims, men between the ages of 19 and 31, are expected to recover. police say it is not clear if the people were intentionally targeted. investigators with the san mateo sheriffs office hosted an event today that they believe could open new doors to finding or identifying missing loved ones. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story now from san carlos. >> reporter: at first glance, it looks like a job fair. but look again. you'll find vital resources for families of missing loved ones. >> he just disappeared. he left everything in his room. >> reporter: monica bliss has been looking for her brother e jerome, since he vanished on january 3rd, 1983, in san francisco. >> he was seeing a psychiatrist, and the psychiatrist had called my moment and said he never showed up for the appointment. >> reporter: she brought jerome's picture to missing persons day, an event hosted by the san mateo county coroner's office, helping friends and family across the bay area file police reports and get information. >> it was a safe opportunity for

them to come. if they feel intimidated by going to a law enforcement agency, they certainly can come here to the coroner's office and have an opportunity to submit the dna. >> i did a dna swab, which i've never done, and i thought that would be fantastic. >> reporter: a dna swab from your cheek is sent to the department of justice's database to see if there are any matches to police cases of those missing or located nationwide. >> sometimes those matches come back to an individual that has deceased, but the important part is it puts closure to the family and it gets that individual identified. >> reporter: there are 400 active missing persons cases in san mateo county alone. technology could help open doors. >> you never know what a change in technology somewhere is going to affect that missing persons case. >> i really would like to have some kind of closure because i carry a lot of sadness. >> reporter: monica bliss now waits to learn if her dna can reveal the truth about what happened to her brother. the process could take months. in san mateo county, cornell barnard, abc7 news.

people got on their bikes and hit the road today in the north bay to help two worthy causes. this year's cycle forsythe in napa raised money for the pathway home program that provides mental health care to veterans. you may remember a gunman shot and killed three employees there last month. the series of rides also raised money for the everyonchants hil camp for the blind and visually impaired. organizers expect today's rides to raise about a quarter million dollars. to mark this earth day, people across the bay area are making it a cleaner place. in san jose, spring cleaning volunteer events were held at three locations. this one at sierra mont middle school is affectionately called dumpster day. earth day is officially tomorrow with most events being held today. in the east bay, volunteers hit the beach in albany to clean the shoreline. organizers say our recent storms brought in lots of trash to

a santa rosa fire survivor was fulfilled tonight. the 9-year-old boy who lost his home and beloved athletics memorabilia took to the pitcher's mound. abc7 news reporter katie utehs has his story. >> reporter: baseball's a sport steeped in nostalgia. >> daddy, it's chris sale and sean manaea. >> reporter: at 9 years old, loren smith is on his favorite team's home field. >> it's great to see the big smile on his face. we have an amazing a's fan here to throw out the first pitch. it's an incredible night. >> it feels a long way now. it feels like a long way once i look at it. i've been practicing with my dad. >> oh, it's unbelievable. it's larger than life. >> good luck out there. i'll be watching, all right? >> please welcome loren smith and his family to the coliseum. >> reporter: loren's journey to the big league has been a difficult one. it started 64 miles north of here in santa rosa.

if you celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the bay area's very own field of dreams, he will come. abc7 news was in oakland at ricky henderson field where the baseball hall of famer and oakland tech graduate signed autographs and thanked the community for keeping his diamond dream alive. the high school's baseball field built in 2008 was named in the former oakland a's honor the following year. >> people just come and share their heart into this field, and i'm so proud that, you know, they've been able to keep it just like when it was brand-new. >> the event recognized the community's efforts to keep the field working with $350,000 in donations and countless hours of volunteer work over the last decade. colin kaepernick has been honored for his protests by amnesty international. the human rights organization presented him with its ambassador of conscience award today at a ceremony in amsterdam. his presenter, former 49er

teammate eric reed. reed, like kaepernick, took a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice. a rent control measure could be appearing on the ballot this november and set off a new war between landlords and tenants. organizers want to repeal a decades old law known as costa hawkins and say they have the signatures to put it to a vote. now, the law makes it illegal for cities to apply rent caps to any properties built after 1995. for cities who adopted rent control before that time and buildings constructed after the date it was enacted were exempt. rallies are planned in oakland, los angeles, and sacramento. many music lovers took part in a twice yearly national event that goes back to when your favorite songs were played on a turn table long before anyone has heard of mp3 players. abc was at albany's strictly vinyl records for record stores day. strictly vinyl takes part in the special nationwide celebration. several artists also released new albums just for today,

including superstars like eric clapton, led zeppelin, pink floyd, and bruce springsteen. >> independent and larger record stores are -- we're putting out certain releases that come out special for today. it brings in a lot of people in the door. >> a deejay even entertained shoppers inside. record stores day also takes place on black friday every year. a shout out now to a cause i am really passionate about. we're talking about best buddies. today i helped emcee their annual friendship walk at golden gate park this morning. more than 1,000 people came together to walk and laugh and dance and also spread the message of inclusion and the importance of job placement for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. best buddies surpassed their goal of raising $130,000. congratulations to my friends. a reminder, the fund-raising happens all year long. well, it was a gorgeous day for a friendship walk.

a lost family of geese caused some big delays today on the bay bridge.

check it out. the birds were seen wandering over the toll plaza heading towards san francisco. when you have feathers, you can get through for free apparently and bypass the traffic altogether. i wish it was this easy for the rest of us who depend on our wheels. the geese -- oh, and the little ones as well made it up the road toward treasure island. then chp rolled up. officers managed to safely get the birds back to the bay. how funny is that. the littlest things cause the biggest problems. >> i know. we'd like to fly over the bay bridge. we don't want to walk over it. shu out in the field right now. mindi sitting in. >> talk about flying. boy, sean manaea, unbelievable. he's off to a historic start. not only did he throw the seventh no-hitter in oakland history, he's doing what no a's starter has done in nearly 30 years. i'll explain coming up in sports.

>> announcer: now from abc7, live breaking news. >> we are staying on top of our breaking news. san francisco firefighters still at a three-alarm fire that broke out in the sunset district just before 10:00 tonight. once again, that is where we find abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian with the very latest. >> reporter: dion, a huge response here in the golden gate heights neighborhood in san francisco on eighth afternovenu. there are about 100 firefighters. the fire chief arrived because this fire is still not out. it has been burning in a three-story building and neighbors tell me that there are three separate units. there are condos that are inside. five or six people live here.

the fire department says that no injuries took place, but people out here are worried. they say that there is an elderly woman who lives on the bottom floor with her adult son. >> it came to a point where it was pretty, like pitch black. and the officers were just telling us that the smoke is too dangerous, and that we should go back in our houses. but i just came out again. the wind picked up. i'm just checking to see if my friend's okay. >> reporter: meantime, people living in homes on either side of the building, they have been evacuated. there's a fear that the fire could spread, and that's also why firefighters are currently on the tops of the roofs, again, on either side of the building that is currently on fire. and firefighters are still working on this. they're watching it to see the smoke patterns, trying to see if there are any flare-ups at this hour. and streets in this area are blocked off. even buses. they are at a standstill because there are so many hoses out here.

escalating tensions tonight at the white house as president trump takes to twitter to blast a number of people and institutions. all while praising his longtime attorney and fixer michael cohen. tara palmieri has the story from florida where the president is spending the weekend. >> reporter: tonight president trump fiercely defending his personal attorney and fixer michael cohen, attacking a story claiming cohen may turn on him. tweeting, "the new york times" and a third rate reporter are going out of their way to destroy michael cohen and his relationship with me in the hope that he will flip. the presiden continued, sorry, i don't see michael doing that despite the horrible witch hunt and the dishonest media. the times article quoting roger stone, saying trump treats cohen like garbage. cohen has long professed undying

as mike shumann reports from san antonio, the warriors are preparing for their toughest game yet. >> the warriors hoping to close out the spurs tomorrow in game four in san antonio. they will not be with their head coach gregg popovich for the second straight game, and the warriors will not have steph cur curry. steph went through his first full practice today without contact and kevin duran told us afterwards he looked good. to s >> to see him getting back into the normal routine, i'm happy to see him. the next step is playing a full game. >> reporter: closing out a team at home even if they're down 0-3 is tough duty as the spurs have nothing to lose. >> definitely playing with house money being down. so they're playing free, with a free spirit as well. we've got to counteract that by playing extremely hard, you know, playing good basketball each possession. moving the ball. playing good defense. helping each other out. we'll be fine. >> closeout games are always the most difficult just because you're playing a great team.

game three between the rockets and the timberwolves, james harden. jimmy butler, not an issue for harden, who goes to the hoop and throws it down. harden with 29 points in this one. carl anthony tounz had 18 points and 16 boards for minnesota. he lays that one and gets the foul. jeff t. would add 23 points and the timberwolves with their first playoff win since 2004. 121-105 the final as they pick up a game on the rockets. they still trail 2-1. game three between the thunder and jazz. clock ticking down in the third quarter. watch ricky rubio at the buzzer, off balance. good for three. the jazz up 14 at this point. that's enough to get excited about. rubio finished with a triple-double. 26 points, 11 boards, 10 assists as he lays that one in nicely. the jazz wins and takes a 2-1 series lead. how about the nhl playoffs? capitals and blue jackets for the fourth time in four games went to overnight.
