2:30 am
good monday morning. here's some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." it's president trump's turn to wine and dine french president emmanuel macron nearly a year after he received the royal treatment in paris. macron is a guest of honor for the first state visit of the trump white house. we have details coming up. the urgent search for a killer after the mass shooting at a nashville waffle house restaurant. four people were killed, four others injured. officials say they don't know why the suspect opened fire. syracuse university has expelled a fraternity over the release of a video described as appalling and disgusting. the fraternity members say the video was intended as satire. the students could be suspended or expelled. harry potter and the cursed child has opened to rave reviews on broadway. the five-hour production is about the later life of its

title character. ruba goldberg is among those tweeting about it. she says, it's off the hook, see it. those are some of our top stories on this monday, april 23rd. five hours? i was interested until i realized it was five hours. >> i do love harry potter, though. >> that's more than half a work day. >> oh yeah -- okay, is that a good thing or a bad thing? >> i don't know, five hours? that's a whole -- wow, that's a production. we're going to start this half hour off with the president and first lady poised to host their first official state visiting welcoming french president emmanuel macron to the white house. >> macron and his wife rolled out the red carpet for trump last year, now the trumps are putting on the glitz. the two couples have dinner at mt. vernon tonight, george washington's old home, a rare private dinner there.
2:32 am
then there's a lavish state dinner at the white house tomorrow. abc's jordan phelps with more. >> reporter: the white-knuckle handshake at their first meeting last year. an early sign of the diplomatic bromance in the making. french president emmanuel macron pulling out all the stops for president trump's visit to paris for bastille day last summer. dinner in the eiffel tower. and that unforgettable military parade. >> it's one of the greatest parades i've ever seen. it was two hours on the button. and it was military might. and i think a tremendous thing for france and to the spirit of france. >> reporter: the visit made such an impression on the president that he returned home with orders for the pentagon to look into organizing a similar parade in the u.s. set for later this year. now trump will fete the french leader in trump style. the trumps had previously hosted lavish affairs for world leaders at their mar-a-lago club, but the state visit for macron is their first big bash at the white house.
2:33 am
there will be honor guards, marching bands, and a decked-out white house for a formal white tie dinner in the state dining room. the visit is intended to be a symbol of the close relationship between president trump and the french president. and they've even bonded over their stylish wives. trump famously overheard admiring macron's wife for her physical fitness. macron's visit has been months in the making. and is designed to impress. on their first night in town, the trumps will take the macrons to a private dinner at george washington's historic mt. vernon home. and for that all-important state dinner, sources tell me the first lady has personally attended to every last detail. from the flowers, the menu, down to that exclusive guest list. diane and kendis? our other big story this morning is the search for a suspected killer who killed four people at a nashville restaurant. eyewitnesses say 29-year-old
2:34 am
travis reinking never said a word, just got out of his vehicle and opened fire. two people died in the parking lot. the gunman then went into the waffle house, still shooting. overnight, 80 nashville police officers plus state and federal agents are looking for reinking. they say he may be armed and dangerous. no visitors will be allowed at nashville schools until he's caught. four people were injured, some by shattered glass. one of the injured is in critical condition. officials say the death toll could have been much worse if one of the patrons hadn't wrestled away one of his guns. >> you have to do this now or it's not going to be -- if i let him load that weapon, it wasn't going to be another window. it wasn't going to be another chance. i'm not a hero. i'm just a regular person. and i think -- and i think anybody could have did what i did. >> all four of the people kill

wednesday in their 20s. this woman, debny groves, was a social worker at belmont university. the others included a middle tennessee state student, a restaurant employee, and a patron who was talking outside. the suspect in the latest florida school shooting admits he did it. in a stunning jailhouse interview the 19-year-old gives a shocking reason why he opened fire on a building full of frightened teens. here's abc's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: the florida teen facing a terror charge for opening fire inside a high school says he did it because he wanted to go to jail. >> that was my primary goal. i knew if i didn't snap now, it would have been later, and it would have been 100 times worse. >> reporter: the 19-year-old now speaking out saying he didn't want to hurt anyone. >> i prepared to go and scare people and put my shotgun in my guitar case and just put my
2:36 am
tackle in my backpack and went. >> reporter: authorities say sky boucher carried that concealed shotgun onto campus in ocala friday, firing one round through a classroom door, one student hit in the ankle. students and teachers created barricades with desks for protection. >> a girl passed right by me. i didn't want to shoot or kill people. at that point the adrenaline and the excitement kind of faded immediately. >> reporter: a school resource officer took boucher into custody, who apologized while being led away in handcuffs. >> anything you want to say to his family? >> sorry. >> reporter: boucher faces multiple charges. he's being held without bond. the sheriff's office obtained a temporary risk protection order, part of new state legislation following the parkland high school shooting. it's the first time such an order has been enforced and bars boucher from having a gun. residents in the south should be on alert for severe storms overnight. a system right now is extending

2:39 am
>> reporter: experts add there is some possible relief in sight, explaining after prices climb a potential 10 to 25 cents a gallon in the coming weeks, they'll likely drop again in june. >> it means you just have to make it through the memorial day holiday weekend. which will be pricey. a family of geese stopped traffic while getting a little exercise on one of the country's longest bridges. >> that's right. check out mom, dad, and the chicks all taking a stroll across the bay bridge heading into san francisco. the california highway patrol closed off part of the span to give the geese their own escort. they did make it to their destination safely. and slowly. >> would you like to be stuck in the traffic behind that? >> i would not. i'm kind of glad i can watch it on tv. the academy award winner who's drawing criticism from her native israel after turning down an award known as the jewish nobel. the world's only

for the past couple of weeks we've been previewing a new production called the start here podcast, where abc's brad mielke gives listeners in-depth perspective on the day's top stories. >> if you want to go deeper on many of the stories we bring to you, you should subscribe and brad can walk you through the news as you hop in the car, on the train, while doing your chores around the house. >> and we've pulled brad out of his podcasting den, his lair as we call it. >> it looks like a lair. >> brad's here in studio with us live, thank you for joining us. >> thank you. >> in the middle of the night. what are you cooking up for the next episode? >> would you guys believe that natalie portman caused a major flash point in israel over the weekend? because there's an award that's given out to a prominent jewish person every year that's done great things, this year it went to natalie portman. this weekend she turned it down
2:44 am
saying she would not fly to israel and be seen with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. i spoke with our reporter in jerusalem and she said, this set off a firestorm. >> natalie portman is one of the least likely people that anyone could call an anti-semite or a supporter of bds, the boycott movement, or anti-israel. i mean, it's ludicrous. and yet after she pulled out of this ceremony, one of israeli prime minister netanyahu's closest advisers said that this borders on anti-semitism, because he sees it as that she's boycotting israel. >> now some in israel are applauding her decision. portman said she's not even calling for boycotts or sanctions, but in a statement she says certain atrocities are "not in line with my jewish values." >> that's interesting. so how did this become such a big deal?
2:45 am
>> well, sanctions in israel are this huge flash point for the entire country. it says that we don't like israel, we don't like what you stand for. but in this case, jordana was telling me it's an especially important deal because sanctions are often hijacked by actual anti-semitic groups and that's why this move by portman was seen as this anti-semitic move. >> natalie was born in israel. she says she's not being very political there in doing this but a lot of people are calling for her passport to be pulled, for her citizenship to be pulled. >> it's interesting. for a movie star we think of as so american, she has two kids that she named in the original hebrew, her original work was in hebrew. she identifies with the country very closely. but in not accepting this award, it really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. but jordana told me there are also people saying, you go, natalie portman in israel. >> how's the podcasting experience been so far? >> podcast has been awesome. what i really like about working here in the building is i'm around you guys, i'm around so many great reporters. every afternoon and evening i get to go ping people and say, what are you working on?
2:46 am
>> he said, i'm around you guys and great reporters. >> brad, we always love the company. it's fun to talk to you on camera every night. we especially love having you here with us in these early morning hours. >> can't wait for you to come back. you have an invite. >> we're going to hold you to that. you can subscribe to "start here" on your favorite podcasting app. brad mielke, always great to have you here. >> thanks, guys. you here. >> thanks, guys.

the tiny country of bhutan has the fastest-growing economy in south asia and it's making huge strides in the field of hydroelectricity. >> many argue bhutan's effort to fight climate change is coming at a high cost. abc's bob woodruff just returned from there and has this story. >> reporter: just so beautiful. 23-year-old pasan grew up on the water. he's loved it ever since he was a young boy. but the water that he loves in the only home he's ever known is being threatened by forces beyond his control.
2:49 am
this is the remote country of bhutan. nestled at the top of the world between china and india. less than 1 million people live here. a secluded nation by choice. intent on preserving its own identity. there are no fast food chains, no smoking, and limits on mass tourism. and they are still managing without a single traffic light in the entire country. but that's not why i'm here. it's bhutan's relationship with what they call white gold. water. this land-locked nation's relationship with water has made the bhutanese into being the most environmentally progressive nations in the world. sandwiched between the world's worst and third-worst carbon emitters, the bhutanese are forced to live in a real precipice of climate change. bhutan is the world's only carbon-negative country. bhutan is part of what is called the third pole. it's the source of no less than 10 river systems across asia.
2:50 am
and a freshwater source for 1.3 billion people. the melting glaciers are filling 2,600 glacial lakes to the brim. today there are 25 glacial lakes in danger of bursting. one of the most dangerous glacier lakes is thorthomi. if its natural barrier bursts, it will almost instantly unleash 14 trillion gallons of water into the river valleys below, a tsunami from the sky. >> the river is like mother for me. like my mother. it feeds me. so that's why every time it changes, i wonder why. >> reporter: this churning whitewater is bhutan's white gold. and the bhutanese government wants to harness this power with a network of hydroelectric
2:51 am
plants. but not everyone here is on board with the plan. like pasan's boss tobi. tobi takes us downstream to what will become the country's largest hydropower projects to see the impact of the construction for ourselves. as we approach, the scenery changes. in 2016, hydropower represented a large portion of bhutan's economy. it is now the fastest-growing economy in south asia. but the bhutanese government says they barely skimmed the surface of their country's potential. if the temperatures continue to rise and the glaciers disappear, so too will the water source for these river guides, the farmers, and the hydropower plants. this water, it turns out, can eventually run dry. i'm bob woodruff on the rivers of bhutan. >> fascinating look at that country. the full documentary is right now on abcnews.com. >> an interesting debate too. >> it is. it makes you want to put it on

"a quiet place" is as creepy, as intense -- >> i really want to see it. >> don't go with somebody who has that popcorn and is loud and eating. >> kenneth had an interesting experience. >> too loud. why go for one popcorn every time and make the noise? >> you should write a blog. a school assembly turned into an emotional reunion for a teacher on new york's long island. >> she read out an unexpected name and realized her whole school was in on a big surprise. here's abc's john donvan. >> eric bending? >> reporter: when teacher regina bensing read out the name of her son eric, she looked and sounded confused. >> as i look down and saw -- i said the name in my head. eric benzing. what? eric benzing? >> reporter: this is a school for little kids where she was presenting student of the month awards and eric's a grown man.

this morning on "world news now," the race to find a killer. >> it's an all-out search for the suspect in a mass shooting in tennessee. a man arrested last year near the white house. we're also learning more about the four people killed and the man police are calling a hero who grabbed the gun before any more people could be shot. also this morning the president's busy weekend on twitter. more than two dozen tweets. and he defends his personal attorney, michael cohen, who's under federal investigation right now. and after years of loyalty, many are wondering will cohen turn against the president? plus new video just in, a powerful storm ripping through the florida panhandle leaves a waterspout behind and a path of destruction. and some kids just don't like the word no. like the 12-year-old who booked himself a four-day overseas vacation without telling mom and dad.
3:01 am
>> huh. >> hear how this one ends on this monday, april 23rd. tell you how that one would have ended in my house, it would not have been good for me, i can promise you that. >> i don't know how you even begin. do you take mom and dad's credit cards and then just -- >> yes, in this case that's how it started. it ended in their house differently than it would have ended in mine. >> i feel like such a slacker. >> we'll get to all of that coming up. we're going to start on a much more serious note with new details at a deadly shoot agent a waffle house restaurant in nashville. >> four are dead after a gunman, naked from the waist down, opened fire. he began shooting in the parking lot and then went inside. >> nashville police, state, and federal agents are looking for travis reinking, who's no stranger to law enforcement after an incident at the white house last year. abc's erielle reshef has more. >> reporter: police desperately searching for the gunman who
3:02 am
killed four in a deadly rampage, warning he could be armed and ready to kill again. dozens of people were in this waffle house when police say 29-year-old travis reinking opened fire. >> this guy in a pickup truck pulls up, gets out of his vehicle wearing nothing but a jacket, and shot some guy right at the door. >> reporter: the shooter not saying a single word as he fired round after round from this ar-15. >> once he got inside it sounded like he just sprayed the rest of his bullets out. >> reporter: witnesses say the gunman paused to reload. that's when james shaw jr. wrestled the gun away. the barrel still hot, burning his hand. >> you have to do this now or it's not going to be -- if i let him load that weapon, it wasn't going to be another window. wasn't going to be another chance. >> reporter: police hailing him a hero. >> i'm not a hero. i'm just a regular person.
3:03 am
and i think -- and i think anybody could have did what i did. >> reporter: his gun gone, the suspect taking off. triggering a massive manhunt. >> suspect is still on foot. >> reporter: helicopters searching above. >> yeah, they're in our yard now. >> reporter: officers with guns drawn and search dogs coming right into this backyard. not far from the crime scene, police found reinking's jacket loaded with two more magazines. >> he clearly came armed with a lot of firepower, intending to devastate the south nashville area. >> reporter: then this bombshell. authorities say in 2017, the secret service arrested reinking for being in a restricted area of the white house. during that investigation, state authorities seizing four firearms, including the ar-15 they say he used but investigators say reinking's father got those guns back, and gave them to his son.
3:04 am
>> there is a chance that reinking at this moment is at large with two other weapons. >> and how far could this man have gotten by now? >> well, he's on foot. so unless he's been picked up by a car, unless other means of transportation, he would be fairly close. >> reporter: travis reinking now on the top of tennessee's most wanted list. authorities say they're concerned about the suspect's mental health. we've learned he's had previous incidents of suicidal behavior and delusions. so far police have not found any notes or evidence of a possible motive. erielle reshef, abc news, antioch, tennessee. president trump making a misleading claim ahead of his upcoming meeting with north korean dictator kim jong-un. the president tweeted north korea has agreed to denuclearization, but there has been no such agreement. however "the wall street journal" is reporting the president will ask kim to give up his nuclear weapons before any talks of easing sanctions. the north did say it would suspend nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile launches and dismantle a nuclear test site as well.
3:05 am
the president's tweet on north korea is among more than two dozen he fired off over the weekend, many in defense of his long-time attorney. now back from mar-a-lago, he's preparing for some big meetings as a source tells abc news that attorney, michael cohen, will not turn on the president. here's abc's tara palmieri. >> the president's personal attorney and fixer under criminal investigation, signaling complete loyalty to trump. a source telling abc "michael cohen will never flip." >> i'll do anything to protect mr. trump. >> reporter: the source says trump's long-time confidant rejects a "new york times" story cohen may cooperate with investigators since the fbi raided his home, hotel, and office. the president lashing out against the "times" and defending cohen tweeting, sorry, i don't see michael doing that, despite the horrible witch hunt and the dishonest media. >> why is the president talking about the notion of michael cohen flipping if the president didn't do anything wrong this.
3:06 am
>> you have to look at everything the president has said about michael cohen and the fbi raid. he's defending someone he's worked with and known for a dozen-plus years who he thinks is being treated unfairly. >> reporter: while cohen and trump are presenting a united front the attorney will likely face pressure given the burden of proof needed to seize his files. >> to even get the warrant that they got, they had to show evidence of a possible crime. and i think that's probably what's making michael cohen's team so concerned. >> reporter: the turmoil over cohen spreading throughout the white house. abc news confirmed attorney general jeff sessions threatened to resign if the president axed his deputy, rod rosenstein, who signed off on the raid. the white house indicating that right now, neither sessions, rosenstein, nor special counsel robert mueller are in danger. >> as far as i know, the president has no intention of firing these individuals. >> reporter: the president has a big week ahead. his first state visit with french president emmanuel macron. he'll cap it off with a meeting with german chancellor angela merkel.
