perez, his mother writing on facebook, today is the hardest day of my life. akilar dasilva was a student at middle state university and his girlfriend recovering as well and deebony groves, a senior at belmont was eating with her sorority sisters when police say 29-year-old travis reinking started shooting. he then went inside opening fire again. >> once he got inside, it sounded like he just sprayed the rest of his bullets out. >> reporter: witnesses say he paused to reload. and that's when james shaw rushed the suspect wrestling the gun away but burning his hands on the gun's hot barrel. >> you have to do this now or it's not going to be -- if i let him load that weapon, there wasn't going to be another window, wasn't going to be another chance. >> shaw's best friend is also being called a hero. brennan mcmurry pulled several people into the bathroom likely saving their lives. >> we pushed a couple of girls into the back bathroom and then me, a guy and another lady went

into my bathroom and locked it and the shots just got louder. >> reporter: this morning authorities are revealing reinking's history of mental illness. according to a 2016 incident report, police in illinois were called to a cvs parking lot where he was delusional and believed taylor swift was harassing him, stalking and hacking his phone. and last year the secret service arrested him for trespassing near the white house. during that investigation, police confiscated those weapons including the ar-15 he allegedly used at the waffle house. but investigators say reinking's father got those guns back and gave them to his son. immediately after the shooting, the acting mayor of nashville called for stricter gun laws. >> if we can all just come together for this and for the greater good, we can take these weapons of war off the streets of our country. >> and back in illinois, reinking was accused of diving into a public pool last summer wearing a housecoat and then allegedly exposing himself to lifeguards. he moved to nashville last fall

and worked in construction but he hadn't been to work since last monday. turning now to the president's latest tweets, he's defending his lawyer michael cohen as we get new insight into whether cohen plans to turn on the president. meanwhile, president trump is under fire for a misleading tweet about north korea. abc's janai norman has the latest on both stories. janai, good morning. >> reporter: diane, good morning. the focus of the president's weekend tweets included attacks on the media, the special counsel and reports his longtime attorney would flip. president trump is standing by his longtime lawyer and fiercely loyal fixer, michael cohen. >> i will do anything to protect mr. trump. >> reporter: cohen is the subject of a criminal investigation. "the new york times" reporting he may cooperate with federal investigators leading the president to lash out tweeting, sorry, i don't see michael doing that despite the horrible witch-hunt and the dishonest media. >> why is the president, though, talking about the notion of michael cohen flipping if the president didn't do anything wrong? >> you have to look at

everything the president said about michael cohen and the fbi raid. he's defending someone who he's worked with and known for a dozen plus years, dana, who he thinks is being treated unfairly. >> reporter: a source telling abc news, quote, michael cohen will never flip. >> this is an epic battle for the soul and the cooperation of michael cohen and prosecutors have enormous weapons at their disposal. they can threaten him essentially with life imprisonment. they can threaten his parents, they can threaten his spouse. >> reporter: also on the president's twitter feed, news out of north korea. in the announcement the country would suspend nuclear weapons testing and plans to close its nuclear test site. but president trump incorrectly claiming they have agreed to denuclearization. >> kim jong-un has learned about public relations and is setting it up well for him. he views having deliverable nuclear weapons as his ticket to dying as an old man in his bed. >> reporter: this all comes as president trump is planning a face-to-face meeting with north

korean dictator kim jong-un. he said that that meeting could happen in the next few weeks. diane. >> that's janai norman live from d.c. for us. thanks, janai. meanwhile, there's a new step overnight as north and south korea prepare for their own peace summit later this week. the south has now stopped propaganda broadcasts at the border saying it wants to ease military tensions between the two countries and create a, quote, peaceful summit atmosphere. a developing story in central america. the leftist president of nicaragua, daniel ortega, is backing down and canceling changes to his country's pension system. this follows a series of deadly protests. 26 people have been killed. demonstrators were angry over pension changes and a proposed tax increase. back here at home, severe storms have been slamming the south overnight. at least two tornadoes have been confirmed in southern alabama. one touched down in a mobile home park in the town of foley overturning some rvs and leaving five people injured. and in louisiana surveillance video shows the moment a tornado swept through a

you're looking at some scary moments on an air india flight. the turbulence was so bad, a window inside the boeing dreamliner cracked and then fell off. 242 passengers and crew were on board. at least three of those passengers were injured before the flight finally landed in delhi. the incident happened just hours after the southwest airlines tragedy here in the u.s. and speaking of southwest, that airlines has now canceled at least 90 flights today because of emergency inspections. they were triggered by that engine explosion on a flight, flight 1380. a fan blade smashed through a window leading to the death of a 43-year-old bank executive. jennifer riordan was remembered during a memorial service in new mexico. her husband there speaking for the very first time addressing the nearly 1,000 people in attendance there saying this was a celebration of her life and that the outpouring of support has meant the world to him and their two kids. we're now hearing from the scientist at the heart of the facebook privacy scandal.

aleksandr kogan lawfully ran a personality test on facebook four years ago to collect the data of millions of americans. then facebook says he broke company policy by sharing that data with a political consulting firm. kogan tells "60 minutes" what he did was not right or wise. >> if i had any inkling that what we were going to do was going to destroy my relationship with facebook, i would have never done it. if i had any inkling that i was going to cause people to be upset, i would have never done it. this was the blindness we had back then. >> kogan also says what he did was not hacking because facebook created the tools for developers to collect the data. consulting firm cambridge analytica says it deleted that data which it received in 2015. all right, get ready to pay more the next time you visit a gas station. gas prices rose another nine cents per gallon in the last two weeks largely thanks to the increasing cost of oil. now, prices are the highest in three years and are expected to rise through memorial day. now, experts recommend filling

made sure they gave him oxygen. >> reporter: the team now says he suffered a ruptured aneurysm and is undergoing multiple surgeries. >> baseball doesn't matter when it comes to something like that. you know, all that matters is family and life. he's a brother of ours. >> reporter: his teammates showed their support wearing farquhar's number 43 on their caps and even hanging his jersey in the bullpen. an estimated 6 million people in the united states have a brain aneurysm every year. 30,000 of which actually experience a rupture. >> this is a surgical emergency. the patient goes into the emergency room, they get a c.a.t. scan of their brain to find out where the bleeding is and go right to the o.r. to stop it with a clip or coil and craniotomy to stop some of the pressure. >> farquhar has a wife and three children. his family has asked for privacy as he tries to recover. >> so young there, 31. new fallout from that racist video shot inside a fraternity at syracuse university. school officials say 18

members of theta tau fraternity seen during that racist sketch have now been removed from campus as the investigation continues. the university newspaper reports another video was shot at the frat house in which students were mocking the assault of a disabled person. the university says it's now reviewing the entire greek system. and a young man from colorado is nursing a leg wound and being called the ultimate survivor. you will flat survivor. dylan mcwilliams suffered that wound when he was attacked by a shark while surfing in hawaii last week. but his story doesn't start or end there. he's apparently very familiar with wild animals. he was attacked by a black bear during a camping trip last year and a few years ago he was also bitten by a rattlesnake. his family says dylan is a lucky guy. >> that's what my dad says. he says i need to either go to vegas or go buy some lottery tickets. >> bad luck. >> yeah, you could say he is a lucky guy or maybe a very unlucky one. he is lucky he was taught wilderness survival classes in the past. he says he can't wait to go surfing again.

the one that caused the engine failure last week on a flight from new york to dallas this. one passenger was killed when degree broke a window of the plane. this isn't the first time a southwest plane has had issues because of fan blade issues.% the government agency is ordering the inspections. one passenger on that flight says this should have happened sooner. >> it's sad that woman had to die in order for the faa to come down and say inspect the engines now. >> reporter: southwest airlines started cancelling flights yesterday for inspections. the airline says it is going what it can to minimize disruptions. utilizing spare aircraft. but says be sure to check your flights. it's an intricate, the inspection. it takes about four hours to
