happened just after 2:30 this afternoon. the high school is located on broadway near 51st street. sky 7 was over the school earlier. a police spokesperson said the injured students were taken to the hospital for treatment. a school district spokesperson said the injuries are non-life threatening. the intersection is closed for a police investigation. 16 people in san francisco were treated after a gas line ruptured next to a homeless shelter. it was first reported about 11:00 this morning with gas leaking from the alley near the next door episcopal community services shelter. ly a-- lyanne melendez is there live. >> reporter: they just covered up the area where that rupture occurred. see how close that alley is to that shelter. that's why so many people became sick. here's what we know. the name of the construction is jay flores construction company and they told me they were doing some sewer work when they hit

that gas line. emergency crews responded quickly to those suffering from the effects of a gas leak near the next door homeless shelter at 10001 polk street. >> they told us to evacuate the building. >> reporter: how are you feeling right now? >> i'm light-headed. my daughter is coming to get me to take me home. >> reporter: 14 people were so ill they had to be taken to local hospitals. two others were treated and released. all of them were either workers or clients of the shelter. it didn't take long to determine the culprit. construction workers in the alley next to the shelter. >> upon arrival, we discovered a construction company had punctured a two-inch gas main on the street and heavy smell of gas in the street. >> just stank. just stank like gas so somebody came through with a trustee mask for me. so now i feel like it still stank out here. >> reporter: pg&e managed to clamp the line in less than an

hour. as a precautionary measure, the area was cordoned off. >> everybody was feeling nauseated, light-headed, shortness of breath. >> reporter: how are you now? >> i'm fine, i'm fine. >> reporter: people were eventually allowed back inside after the building was inspected and the alley assessed to make sure there were no pockets of gas. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. developing news, president george h.w. bush is in intensive care just days after funeral services for his late wife, barbara. a spokesperson says the 93-year-old was admitted to houston methodist hospital yesterday morning. bush is suffering from an infection that has entered his blood. a statement from his office says bush is responding to treatment and appears to be recovering. his hospitalization came just hours after he attended his wife's services. barbara bush died last week at the age of 92. a rapid response team is about to hit the streets in san francisco to take on a different kind of threat, talking about discarded needles.

mayor mark ferrell joined the effort in the south of market neighborhood. he is working to create a dedicated team to remove syringes left on city streets by drug users. >> our needle and syringe issue in san francisco has really become an epidemic on our streets. it is something that i heard about for a long time before becoming the mayor, and now as the mayor of the city and county of san francisco, it is one of the things i hear about the most. people quite frankly are fed up with the conditions of our streets, as am i. >> the mayor says the city will add ten new employees contracted through the aids foundation to conduct sweeps and help collect these abandoned needles. he says residents and busines owners can report needles because calling the city's 311 system. a union city woman is in custody accused of killing her husband. police found the body of a 57-year-old man inside the home after getting a call around 10:15 last night. officers say the man had been

shot several times. two women were at the scene, the victim's wife and another relative. police took the wife into custody. investigators haven't released a motive, but they say the couple had a history with police. >> in 2004 we responded to this address with some of the involved parties where the 57-year-old victim in this case was actually arrested for domestic violence crime. >> authorities aren't releasing the names of those involved until they notify the couple's three adult children. to the weather for a few moments. another day of sun and unseasonably warm weather. spencer christian is here to let us know how long it's going to last, spencer. >> a couple more days. here's a live at live doppler 7. you see fog developing along the coastline and temperatures right now looking like that typical summer-like range. 57 at half moon bay but mid to upper 80s in many inland locations and we have a giants game at at&t park this evening,

taking on the washington nationals at 7:15. game time mainly sunny, breezy, about 62 degrees. we'll see the fog spreading from the coast, across the bay and locally inland overnight. so the day will begin tomorrow with quite a bit of fog around but that warmth will hold up for a while. i'll show you just how long in a few minutes. a big fire engulfed an oakland homeless camp today. sky 7 was over the scene in east oakland. there have been several like it in the last few months, as i said, and one of those fires happened in west oakland last month. today abc 7 news reporter laura anthony talked with residents who say they have been all but abandoned by the city of oakland. >> it's been chaos. we've been abandoned by the city of oakland. >> reporter: west oakland business owner bill eason says he's seen it all in his aaron years on harlan street but nothing as bad as this. it's one of the oakland's

homeless encampments, one eason and his neighbors say living and working here is almost unbearable. last month eason ran over and tried to put out flames that roared through some of the tents. he's even offered the residents small jobs and helped them in other ways. besides servicing the porta-potty and weekly garbage cleanups, the city has done little despite dozens of letters and phone calls from him and others in the neighborhood. >> not once did i get a call back. i've learned to give up. >> reporter: many of eason's calls went to oakland's assistant to the city manager in charge of homeless outreach. >> i can say we get dozens and dozens of calls every day about encampments because this is a crisis, like it is for every city on the west coast. >> reporter: the city does have several initiatives in the works, like the tough sheds which are housing dozens of people. the problem, according to the last census, there are about 2,000 people living on the streets of oakland. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7

news. some frightening moments today on the ride to school for a group of children in santa cruz county. their school bus was hit by an suv this morning north of watsonville. the chp says the suv drifted into oncoming traffic of the the bus driver swerved to avoid it and crashed into a power pole. no one was hurt. the children were safely taken off the bus, picked up by a second bus and driven to school. the chp says the driver of the suv left the scene and they don't have many leads. testing has begun on a new stretch of b.a.r.t. tracks. matt keller is on the story. >> reporter: what is life like when a massive b.a.r.t. station pops up in your backyard? >> do you get veggies or fruit? >> yeah, everything. >> reporter: it's normal, according to april and bobby, who live in apartments in north san jose. >> since the beginning of the construction, everything is okay. no noise. so i think it's okay. >> reporter: they may notice a

change starting today. vta begins a new stage for testing the ten-mile segment of the b.a.r.t. berryessa extension. trains could be running around the clock up to 20 hours total per day. >> we are running test trains up to about 80 miles per hour, and that way we can start to really look at all how the trains talk to the system and that's how the system talks to the trains. >> reporter: vta says residents may notice sporadic noise and vibration but different from the construction noise they have had since 2012. the vta put up sound walls and triple-pane windows in about 250 homes near the tracks. >> now it's much quieter? >> yeah, it's quiet, yeah. we cannot hear the noise of the b.a.r.t. train. >> reporter: vta hopes to have is testing done by the beginning of the summer. b.a.r.t. will have to do its own tests. the goal is to get the berryessa station open by the end of the year. matt keller, abc 7 news. hundreds of tenants rallied in oakland, los angeles and

sacramento today in support of a ballot initiative they say would slow skyrocketing rents in cities across the state. abc 7 news reporter carlos was at today's oakland rally. >> reporter: with signs that read "rent is too damn high," housing affordability supporters rallied to call for an end to california's rent control law. >> our communities are facing incredible rates of displacement. people are pushed out and some of them end up homeless. >> reporter: proponents pushing to repeal it have enough signatures to place the issue before voters this november. it allows landlords to raise rent to market levels after a tenant moves out of single family homes, condos and apartments built after 1995. >> let's give cities and counties back the right to do rent control, because in fact we had more production when we had rent control than we have today. >> reporter: the affordable housing act would do away with a law that makes it illegal for

two key firggures are planng to testify about the facebook scandal. they will testify about the data given to a research firm connected to the trump campaign. rebecca jarvis has the latest. >> reporter: he's the scientist at the heart of the facebook privacy scandal. aleksandr kogan, a researcher at the university of cambridge, who lawfully ran a personality test on facebook in 2014 to collect the data of millions of americans. but according to facebook broke company policy when he shared that information with political consultancy cambridge analytica. >> so at the time i thought we were doing everything that was correct. i was kind of acting haonestly naively. i thought we were doing everything okay. >> reporter: kogan telling "60 minutes" what he did on the social network was a common occurrence among researchers. his quiz downloaded about 270,000 times, according to facebook, put as many as 87

the obama era net neutrality rules are officially dead. as of today the regulations passed in 2015 no longer apply, a move spearheaded by the federal communications commission. under the old rules federal regulators prohibited slowing down web traffic and from offering higher speeds for those willing to pay extra. five states have passed laws to keep many of those rules in place. california is considering similar legislation. a san francisco appeals court says when it comes to copyright laws, there's no monkey business. the ninth circuit court of appeals issued an opinion in the peta lawsuit over this photo. the court ruled animals don't have copyrights over photographs. peta claimed he had the rights to the photo he snapped using a photographer's camera. a san francisco-based self publishing company reached a settlement in 2017 but the court

51. right around the shoreline upper 40s will be the rule. as we look at tomorrow, we'll begin the day with morning fog but it will start to warm up nicely by midday as the fog retreats a bit. we'll see less fog in the late afternoon and it will be even warmer with temperatures inland in the low 80s by mid-afternoon. mid-70s around the bay, mid-60s along the coast. it will be a slow cooldown because of the major warmup. we'll have 82 concord, 81 and the -- antioch. san jose will have a high of 79 and on the coast we'll see low to mid-60s even with the presence of fog. now, later in the week there's a chance of some light rain or sprinkles developing in the north bay mainly. so by 11:00 p.m. friday we estimate right now we'll see a couple hundredths of an inch of

removing me from this plane? >> you just assaulted a lady for one. >> officers struggled to remove 28-year-old jacob garcia from the chicago-bound flight. one officer finally had to use his taser a number of times. witnesses say garcia was rude to a couple on the flight. then began using racial slurs. the crew called for help. when he refused to leave the airplane. other passengers clapped and cheered when he was finally taken off that flight. in developing news, more than 100 southwest flights were cancelled today as the airline continues to inspect its fleet of boeing 737s. cancellations included one arrival and one departure from mineta airport. an engine broke up and exploded on a southwest flight last week killing a woman. southwest plans to inspect all engine fan blades within 30 days. here's a promotion that will leave some people saying wow.

families who live on. >> reporter: police are now piecing together reinking's crime-filled past. last week they confirm he stole a car from a local bmw dealership. they point to his history of mental illness, citing a 2016 incident report that says reinking was delusional and believed taylor swift was harassing him, stalking and hacking his phone. in 2017, reinking was arrested by the secret service for trespassing at the white house. at the time his four firearms were seized by police and eventually turned over to his father. the father has admitted that he gave all of the guns back to his sun, including the rifle police say reinking used this sunday to gun down his victims. >> he transferred weapons knowingly to a person that is prohibited so that could be a violation of federal law. >> reporter: the mayor of nashville thanked authorities for all of their hard work and said now the community can receive justice and breathe a sigh of relief. maggie rulli, abc news, new york. ohio's republican governor signs an executive order today

think. spencer christian is here with the forecast. >> it's going to continue a couple more days. here's a look at live doppler 7. we've got main ly sunny skies bt fog is beginning to develop. low temperatures drop only into the mid to upper 40s for the most part. a few locations will see lows in the low 50s so it will be pretty mild in many spots overnight. this is our fogcast starting at 7:00 tomorrow morning. at that point there will be quite a bit of fog lingering from the overnight hours but burn back to the coastline by midday and stay at the coastline most of the day giving us sunny skies once again over the bay and inland locations. under those sunny skies, high temperatures will reach in the low to mid-60s, near the coast, low to mid-70s around the bay and low to mid-80s inland. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. we'll have two more warm days as i mentioned, tomorrow and wednesday. temperatures drop off a little bit on thursday. it gets even cooler on friday with a chance of some sprinkles,

a man in texas will spend the rest of his life in prison for stealing fajitas. as jessica castro explains, this was no one-time job. >> 50 years in prison for stealing fajitas? a texas man stole a lot. he stole $1.2 million worth of fajitas and now has pleaded guilty to theft by a public servant. that's according to the brownsville herald. the cameron county d.a.'s office arrested him after a food

service driver called the detention center's kitchen to let the employees know their 800-pound delivery of fajitas had arrived. only just one problem because inmates at the detention center are not served fajitas. jessica castro, abc 7 news. the better business bureau is giving palo alto-based tesla an f rating saying the automaker doesn't do a good job responding to customer complaints. the bbb received 65 complaints about tesla. 23 were resolved satisfactorily. tesla responded saying it has the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the entire auto industry and claimed most of the complaints were resolved long ago. a billionaire businessman isn't toying around when it comes to toys "r" us. according to cnn, isaac larian says he remains hopeful that he can save 274 of the toy chain's u.s.-based stores even though his initial $675 million bid for them wasn't accepted.
