of toronto leaving so many victims and witnesses behind. it was a dramatic ending to 26 minutes of pure panic. 25-year-old suspect alek minassian pleading with police to shoot him. >> i have a gun in my pocket. >> i don't care. get down. >> i have a gun in my pocket. >> shoot me in the head. >> reporter: moments earlier a terrifying scene unfolding in toronto. 26 minutes of pure panic from the first 911 calls. >> vehicle, personal injury intersection of yonge street and finch avenue. >> reporter: it was before 1:30 p.m., lunchtime when a white van was used as a murder weapon. >> it was just clear as day. just an ordinary day walking and just saw the guy get hit by a van. >> reporter: that van making it 16 blocks mowing down pedestrians for nearly a mile and a half. >> it's really bad out there. i couldn't believe what i seen, man. it was like, oh, man, everybody -- all these people on the streets getting hit one by one, post office box getting

crumpled up on people and one person got dragged on. and their blood is all over. >> everyone starting running and screaming, and he hit this one lady, and she went flying. you could hear them like dropping. >> reporter: witnesses left with horrifying images painting the grim scene. victims and their belongings bloodied and scattered in the streets. by the time the damage was done, ten people were dead. more than a dozen others hurt. >> there was one lady who was in total distress, and we saw the team go to work on her and pumping away, and they lost her. >> reporter: and police are still working to find out a motive. diane and kendis, authorities there in toronto won't say whether the incident is being investigated as an act of terror. back to you. >> yeah, we do expect to hear from the prime minister around 8:15 eastern time. janai, thank you. back here in new york, as a precaution police did deploy

more officers to high-profile targets and while we don't know the motive in the toronto case, vehicle attacks have become a preferred method for terrorists. with more than 100 deaths in recent years, many cities have installed more barriers to protect pedestrians. former president george h.w. bush is in the hospital being treated for a serious infection. that news comes just days after we saw him posing with the first lady, the clintons and the obamas at barbara bush's funeral. abc's jessica willey has more from houston where well wishers are pouring in this morning. >> reporter: less than a day after his wife's funeral, george h.w. bush was admitted to the hospital here for a blood infection. his spokesman, though, says the former president is, quote, responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. of course, saturday was the last time we all saw mr. bush publicly at the funeral for his wife of 73 years. nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary as far as his health. in fact, the day before he was

greeting people at the public visitation for barbara bush. then monday evening word from his spokesman that the next morning, sunday morning, bush was admitted here to houston methodist hospital after an infection that spread to his blood. we know the 41st president has parkinson's disease. he is 93 years old and certainly the events of last week have been taxing. >> our immune system is affected obviously not by -- not only by our age but our other medical conditions such as i mentioned, diabetes, heart disease, and it's also affected adversely by stress of any type. and loss of our spouse certainly qualifies as a tremendous stress on the system. >> reporter: the last time mr. bush was here for an extended period of time was a year ago for two weeks. he was treated for pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. in a city that holds the bush family in such high regard, monday's news was upsetting, especially so soon after barbara

bush's death. in houston, jessica willey, abc news. and first lady melania trump tweeted this message, sending healing thoughts of strength along with prayers for president george h.w. bush. the battle over mike pompeo's nomination for secretary of state is just about over. he received a narrow endorsement from the senate foreign relations committee. senator rand paul initially opposed the nomination but flipped his vote after some lobbying from the president himself. now, democrat chris coons also switched his vote from no to present. it was done as a favor to a republican senator who was out of town attending a friend's funeral. the committee chairman, bob corker, spoke emotionally after the vote about the bipartisanship that coons displayed. >> i want to thank senator coons for displaying the statesmanship that i've been accustomed to seeing in the

senate, and i'm proud of him. i'm proud of our committee and i'm happy for the american people. i think it showed that senators at the right time can do outstanding things. >> the retiring senator there bob corker. well, the full senate is expected to vote on pompeo's nomination this week. president trump's nominee for secretary of veterans affairs may be in trouble. navy doctor ronny jackson currently serves as the president's doctor but sources say serious new allegations of personal and professional misconduct could derail his nomination. those allegations, though, have not yet been confirmed. the suspect in the mass shooting at a nashville waffle house is being held on $2 million bond. police captured the 29-year-old in the woods near his home. they say he was carrying a semiautomatic handgun with ammunition. more questions are being raised about his previous run-ins with the law, which raised concern about his mental state. he was forced to give up his guns when he lived in illinois before he moved to tennessee. but investigators say his father

gave the guns back to him. authorities are investigating whether his father can be charged. and time now for a look at your weather on this tuesday morning. a storm system packing heavy rain will head north into washington, d.c. area today bringing with it a chance of flooding and strong winds for some areas of the mid-atlantic before it moves into the northeast later tonight. now, today's high temps in washington will be around 58. minneapolis will be just as warm, kansas city is looking at about 74 degrees. denver, though, only reaching 46. highs into the 70s and 80s from portland to seattle. los angeles tops out at 77. new york is looking at 62. coming up, the bizarre scene as a giraffe escapes from a zoo. also ahead, the mystery in the arctic sea that even nasa can't explain. and the new outrage after the police shooting of an

you can call this one a giraffe jailbreak maybe. a 5-month-old giraffe named thabisa decided to run off while being moved at the children's zoo in ft. wayne, indiana. zookeepers eventually used tarps to guide the giraffe back into the barn. happy to report she was not injured but had ray little stroll. to california now and the lawyer for an unarmed black driver killed by police saying he's planning to file a civil rights lawsuit. video shows officers in barstow firing 30 shots at a car driven by diante yarber in a walmart parking lot. a private autopsy determined that he was hit ten times and you can hear those gunshots there.

and authorities have not released their findings. two people in the car with yarber say he was frightened when officers told him to get out of the vehicle. >> we opened the door, pulled his legs out and his hands out and they're screaming for him to get out, jumps back in the car and tries to maneuver the car out of the parking lot. >> they say we were a threat or like, you know, the officers, they're the ones who shoot in broad daylight in a full parking lot at walmart. >> well, police were responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle and say yarber's car matched the description. his lawyer claims one of the officers involved in the shooting actually used racial slurs and was accused of a hate crime. and the family of singer prince has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against walgreens and a chicago hospital which treated him a week before his death. the family claims the hospital failed to appropriately investigate his overdose. just last week authorities announced prince died from taking counterfeit vicodin that

contained fentanyl but said no criminal charges would be filed because they were unable to determine how he got those pills. and closing arguments are expected today in bill cosby's sexual assault trial. the defense rested its without calling cosby to the stand. his first trial on these charges ended with a hung jury. there's a mystery in the arctic this morning. scientists say they're baffled by these crater-like holes in the arctic sea ice. nasa posted a picture of them as part of a contest hoping someone could identify what caused them. shouldn't nasa be able to identify them? well, theories range from melting caused by climate change to the movement of seals. i say definitely aliens. >> of course. >> of course. >> okay. coming up, the new concern about drinking coffee during pregnancy. but first a baby is tossed from a balcony during a fire. we hear from the heroic firefighter. up next, what's next on the menu for president trump's first

we're back with video of president trump there welcoming the french leader on to the white house with a kiss on both cheeks actually. >> very european. >> yep. their wives there, as well. macron is getting the full star treatment in washington, d.c. as the president's first official state visitor. and the two leaders will hold a joint news conference around lunchtime today. >> but the main event is a lavish state dinner at the white house tonight. this morning, the state dining room tables are set complete with candles and centerpieces. outside the room more than 1,200 branches of cherry blossoms line the hallway. 150 guests are expected at president trump's first state dinner where french president emmanuel macron and his wife brigitte will be guests of honor. on the menu, rack of lamb, jambalaya and creme fresh ice cream.

last night it was a double date with the trumps and macrons dining at george washington's home, mt. vernon. >> this is the oval office. >> reporter: macron and his wife got the first tour of the oval office. >> never in the oval office? you have not been in the oval office? >> reporter: macron's office even livestreamed the event as trump showed him the resolute desk and pointed out where a young john f. kennedy jr. would play depicted in this famous picture. the french first lady then asked about a pair of phones. >> this is where i speak to your husband. i speak especially on this one, i'll show you. that's the one. it's supposed to be the latest and greatest but who knows nowadays. >> reporter: but it's not all pleasure. the presidents are expected to discuss several issues they don't agree on including the iran nuclear deal. president trump is threatening to reject an extension of the deal by the may 12th deadline but macron and other european leaders are lobbying trump not to withdraw from the pact saying it could lead to iran restarting its nuclear program similar to north korea's. >> what do you have at a better

option? i don't see it. i don't have any plan b for that against iran so that's a question we will discuss, but that's why i just want to say on nuclear let's preserve the framework because it's better than a sort of north korean type of situation. >> now, out of 150 guests the only democrat invited to the state dinner is the governor of louisiana. a minnesota firefighter says he is glad that he could lend his hands to an amazing rescue. dustin kalis caught a baby from this burning building. you see, he heard the 3-month-old's father screaming for help. smoke and flames trapped the father on the second floor balcony. he knew there was only one way out. >> he came out, baby in arm, got underneath and said, let her go, we're ready. he dropped her. i caught her, passed her off to another firefighter that was nearby to check her out and then he made his way down as we coached him down from the balcony as well. >> well, he called the whole experience completely surreal.
