a lot of people are comparing princess kate to princess diana with these dresses. princess diana on the left after she gave birth to prince harry and kate on the right. i think it is a nice tribute. >> those third babies, so chill, no crying out all. >> but how about charlotte with the little royal wave? melt your heart with that. we have a lot more coming up. but we begin with that deadly attack in toronto, where a man drove his van onto a busy sidewalk in the middle of the day. here's what we know right now. at least ten people are dead, 15 injured. the 25-year-old driver is in custody after a standoff with police during which he begged to be shot. abc's tom llamas is on the scene in toronto with the latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. this is yonge street just behind me where this all happened. it remains closed at this hour. canada's police call this one of the busiest streets in the entire country. and yesterday, a man in a rental van turned it a killing field and this attack has shaken

canada to its core and police aren't exactly sure why this 25-year-old man went on his rampage. chaos on the streets of toronto. a rental van turned into a murder weapon. this new surveillance video shows it barreling down the sidewalk. >> i just saw the guy go flying and i heard the bang. the van just plowed right into him. >> reporter: the van plowing through pedestrians on a busy street during lunch time, killing at least ten, injuring 15 others. some now fighting for their lives. so you're in a starbucks and look outside and you see people getting mowed down? >> yeah, i saw four people die right in front of me. they were wanting to go across the street to the mall and their life just ended right there. >> reporter: eyewitnesses describing the panic as the van swerved across multiple lanes of traffic and up on a sidewalk hitting people across 16 blocks. >> it's really bad out there. i couldn't believe what i seen, man. it was like, oh, man, everybody, all these people on the streets getting hit one by one. >> reporter: this is one of the largest crime scenes i've ever

seen and that's because the path of carnage was more than a mile long. it's as far as the eye can see in both directions. the driver zooming down this street jumping onto the sidewalk mowing down anyone in his way. officers finally stopping the van, leading to the standoff in this video. the driver pulling an object from his pocket repeatedly pointing it at an officer. >> i have a gun in my pocket. >> i don't care. get down. >> reporter: the driver telling the officer to kill him. >> shoot me in the head. >> reporter: but the man was not armed and the officer never fired on him taking him down and handcuffing him. police identifying the driver as 25-year-old alek minassian, a motive still unclear. but police were seen entering his home. neighbors tell abc news minassian was quiet and are in shock at what he's accused of. >> this is our first great tragedy of this kind in the toronto area. and toronto will never be the

same again. >> reporter: toronto, now a city in mourning. a makeshift memorial growing along the site of the attack. overnight, a moment of silence at the toronto maple leafs game. fans fighting back tears as "o canada" filled the arena. ♪ o canada we stand on guard for thee ♪ >> reporter: and that game was a welcome distraction from all that death and destruction. canada's prime minister, justin trudeau addressed the nation saying this doesn't appear to be a national security threat. george. >> yeah, and, tom, listening to those eyewitnesses when i was wired up for the special report yesterday, not only the horror you get but the real shock that it was happening in their town. >> reporter: george, that's right. i've covered a lot of these mass killings, unfortunately, and i've never seen a place that is more in shock than toronto right now. everywhere we go people stop us

to tell us this kind of stuff just doesn't happen in canada. as mass killings and vehicle attacks have grown across the u.s. and parts of europe, people in canada say this kind of stuff just doesn't happen here. some even telling us canada lost some of its innocence yesterday. >> yeah, the presence of that police officer amazing. tom, thanks very much. robin. >> it really was, george. and now we're learning new details about that 25-year-old driver of the van. let's go to our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas for more on that end of the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: robin, good morning. our sources are describing alek minassian as 25 from the toronto area. now, we're being told last night that he was completely suicidal. neighbors are describing him as a loner, not social at all. in addition to searching his home, canadian authorities are looking at his social media footprint, searching for any hint at motive, and u.s. intelligence is checking as well. but the issue law enforcement sources were talking about last night is how attack by vehicle is becoming the preferred method of assault. we don't know yet if this is terrorism but since 2016, more

than 100 people have been killed, more than 500 people have been injured in these kind of attacks. over and over authorities are seeing these attacks popping up and, robin, i have to tell you with so many streets, so many sidewalks, police simply don't know what to do. >> i bet not. all right, pierre, thank you. we'll get the latest now on former president george h.w. bush. he's in the hospital this morning battling a serious infection just days after laying his wife barbara to rest. our senior national correspondent matt gutman is there in houston. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. the 93-year-old former president is battling for his life this morning. that infection you mentioned, it has spread to his blood and the condition called sepsis. that could lead to fatally low blood pressure and organ failure and that's why he's here at the icu. he was admitted after the funeral for his wife of 73 years, barbara.

you can see him being wheeled george w. bush, and this picture with the clintons and the obamas and first lady melaina trump. now, president bush and his wife barbara have been virtually inseparable since his presidency and wanted to honor her one last time wearing those socks you see adorned with books in honor of her legacy in education. president bush was known as a very vital ex-president. you saw him jumping out of this plane for his 90th birthday. he threw out ceremonial pitches at baseball games. he suffered pneumonia twice last year and through it all, his wife barbara was there with him. administering the pills he took and the food he took. one wonders what her loss and his mourning, what kind of effect that is having on his recovery. george. >> now, you can see at the funeral how heartbroken he is. okay, matt gutman, thanks very

much. michael. >> we'll, of course, george, have the latest on president bush all morning long. and now we're going to turn to tennessee where the suspect in that deadly waffle house shooting is finally in custody. captured after a day and a half on the run. abc's erielle reshef is there in nashville. erielle, he was armed when police finally caught him. >> reporter: that's right, michael. that suspect was caught with one of four guns authorities knew he owned. it was a dramatic end to a desperate two-day search, that takedown happening less than one mile from this waffle house, the scene of that deadly rampage. a towering quadruple murder suspect shuffled into jail, captured after a 36-hour manhunt that terrorized a community. a tip from a citizen leading to the arrest. 29-year-old travis reinking cornered by a swarm of officers, cuffed in the woods behind his own apartment complex. >> detectives williams drew down on the suspect, the suspect proned out. told him to get on the ground.

he got on the ground immediately. >> reporter: reinking, seen here in this video feed from court, charged with four counts of criminal homicide. >> do you have any question about your charges or your bond? >> no, i don't. >> reporter: police say he was found with a backpack and a semiautomatic handgun with ammunition. >> when he was caught he did have a maroon shirt, dark jeans and a black backpack with a semiautomatic weapon. >> reporter: reinking had been on the run since the sunday morning massacre at this waffle house just outside nashville. police say he showed up wearing nothing but a green jacket, opening fire with this ar-15, killing four people before being tackled by patron james shaw jr. as he attempted to reload then taking off. grief and anguish for those lost. 23-year-old akilah dasilva, an aspiring rap artist, 21-year-old deebony groves, a dean's list belmont university senior studying social work, 29-year-old taurean sanderlin, a longtime employee of waffle

house, and 20-year-old joe perez's mother saying his family is shattered, asking for prayers. this morning, we know two victims are still in the hospital in stable condition. reinking is being held on a $2 million bond in a maximum security jail. michael. >> and, erielle, we're hearing that the shooter's father could also face charges. >> reporter: that's right, michael, we know that in 2017 reinking's guns were seized after he was arrested by the secret service. those guns later transferred to his father. he allegedly gave those guns back to his son. authorities now looking into the actions of reinking's father. michael. >> all right, erielle, thank you george. we'll go to washington and a big boost for the president's nominee for secretary of state. mike pompeo has a clear path to senate confirmation after picking up a key vote from his top critic. abc's senior congressional correspondent, mary bruce, is on capitol hill with all the latest.

good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, this was a real surprise. mike pompeo here was headed for an historic rebuke but then at the very last second republican senator rand paul flipped his vote after being given assurances directly from president trump. that gave pompeo enough support to clear the key senate foreign relations committee along a strict party line vote. pompeo now heads for a full vote before the senate and he is expected to be confirmed later this week. >> he's going to be confirmed now but there's new trouble for the president's veterans affairs secretary pick. >> reporter: and ronny jackson could be in real trouble, george. his confirmation hearing is set right now for tomorrow, but this morning, there are new concerns about his professional conduct that are threatening to delay and possibly even derail his confirmation. dr. ronny jackson, of course, is the president's personal physician. the two we know are very close but there have already been serious questions raised about whether he's up to the task of managing what is the second largest government agency. george. >> mary bruce, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief white house correspondent, jon

karl, for more on the administration's reaction to all of this. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. well, it's the tale of two nominations. pompeo's nomination to be secretary of state seemed to be headed for the first-ever rejection of a secretary of state nominee by the foreign relations committee. that was averted only with the personal involvement of the president to flip a single republican senator. as for ronny jackson's nomination, though, that is far less certain. officials privately acknowledge to me that he is in real trouble and they say the decision about whether or not to fight is really ronny jackson's. they acknowledge he may decide not to go through with it. that is a very uncomfortable position to be in, robin. >> it's another very busy day there at the white house. we know that the french president is there and the administration's first state dinner tonight. what can we expect? >> reporter: well, this is going to be a very intimate dinner. it's about one-third the size in terms of the guest list of the usual state dinner. 130 guests, robin, that is 13 tables, candlelit tables of ten

people. a very warm welcome for macron. but he comes here with some serious concerns for president trump. for one he is urging him not to get out of the iran nuclear deal, something the president has signaled that he wants to do. and he also has real concerns about the president's trade policies. >> we'll see what happens today. all right, jon, thank you. michael. >> robin, thank you. and now to new details on royal baby number three. home with his family at kensington palace this morning, london celebrating the arrival of their newest royal. the bt tower proclaiming it's a boy. the london eye also lighting up in the u.k.'s colors of red, white and blue. abc's james longman is at kensington palace with more. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, michael. yes, the baby boy waking up to his first day as a prince and we're expecting some visits very soon from perhaps the queen and other members of the royal family. wrapped in his mother's arms the prince made his world debut on

the steps of the lindo wing at st. mary's hospital, giving what appeared to be his first royal wave before the duchess bundled him up to protect him from the cold. the fifth in line to the throne arriving at 11:01, weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces making him the heaviest royal baby in over a century. while prince george and princess charlotte stopped by to visit their new little brother, the princess stealing the show waving excitedly to cameras. prince william and the duchess seen leaving the hospital just seven hours after the baby was born. william now skilled at putting a car seat in the car. managing the feat in just one click. the new dad joking with the press -- >> thrice worry now. >> reporter: and addressing questions about the name. >> good luck. >> expect the baby to have three names. the bookmakers are going with arthur or albert. in terms of middle name, philip is an absolute pretty rock hard certainty. philip would be a lovely tribute

to william's grandfather. >> reporter: well wishes pouring in, including from former first lady michelle obama who shared this photo of her husband shaking hands with the young prince george, writing, barack and i are thrilled to congratulate the duke and duchess of cambridge on their newest arrival. we hope to meet him soon for a kensington palace pajama party. i'll wear my robe. the guessing game as we heard over his name has begun. philip is a real possibility after his great-grandfather. all the royal names possibly, arthur and even, yes, james is still in the mix. >> i know that's the one you're pulling for, james. we're used to it being a lot more formal than it is right now. this young royal family are doing things a lot differently. >> reporter: well, that's right, michael. i mean, look, let's not kid ourselves. this is the royal family, the most famous family in the world. they live in palaces like this. but william and kate, they like to do things differently. we've seen that time and time again. kate, for instance, likes to take her kids on their school run in the morning. last night, the baby would have

been brought back here to kensington palace, apartment number 1a, where their nursery was waiting for the little baby boy. it's themed in a peter rabbit theme and like i said the parents like to be hands-on. william we're told likes to -- likes bath time and likes doing that. and that's very different, i think, from his upbringing and that of his brother harry. prince charles and diana, they had a lot of staff in the house. william and kate, they do things very differently, on first name terms with many of their staff. and they have just really a housekeeper and a nanny. so things are pared down to make it as normal as possible but, i think we should also remember, of course, that these young princes and the princess, they will grow up, we will be waiting as they get married and have children of their own and they will always be under an international spotlight but for the moment this is a family that wants to keep their children

and good morning. it's 7:23. i'm reggie aqui from "abc7 mornings." as you saw from our coverage on the morning news, this massive fire in concord is now under control. the five-story apartment complex under construction started burning just before 1:00 a.m. there is a health advisory in the area because of all that potentially harmful smoke. we'll have more on the fire at 11:00 a.m., but right now, time for traffic and sue hall. how's it look out there, sue? >> we still have some problem spots, reggie. good morning, everyone. we're going now to our first motorcycle accident of the morning. this is northbound 101 past highway 87. it was blocking the hov lane. it's now been pushed off to the shoulder, but we are seeing a lot of slow traffic there. and an accident remains southbound 880 near "a" street. that's been in two lanes of traffic for over a half an hour

fanatics. >> we like "american idol." >> a lot more coming up. top headlines, former president george h.w. bush in the icu this morning fighting an infection that spread to his blood. the 93-year-old was admitted a day after his wife's funeral. his spokesperson is saying he is responding to treatments. prince's heirs are filing a wrongful death lawsuit suing the hospital and walgreens days after his death. both have declined to comment citing pending litigation. and we have some congratulations. our amy robach is not just our amy anymore, also she's been named the co-anchor of "20/20." starting at the end of may, but we'll style be seeing a lot of you here. >> all of you have more than one job so i felt left out and so now i'm joining your ranks. i'm happy to be a part of multiple families here at abc. >> and elizabeth vargas will do some investigative documentaries for a and e and we're happy for you.

>> thank you. >> you're still here? i'm still here. so, start us off. allison mack, the story involving her. >> that's right, she's been charged with sex trafficking for her alleged role in that self-help group learning she is working on a plea deal and may be cooperating with prosecutors. she is due in court today. >> take my hand. >> reporter: she's the actress best known for playing a young superman's best friend on "smallville." >> i can explain later. i did what i had to do. >> reporter: but this morning, allison mack is due in court facing sex trafficking charges after being accused of involvement in helping to recruit women as alleged sex slaves for a secret sorority within an organization called nxivm based out of albany, new york. mack gave a testimonial for the group. >> when i first came i had on the surface something that seemed to be like the perfect life for a pretty good life. >> reporter: keith raniere, the leader of nxivm, is facing charges including sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy related to that

secret sorority. raniere and mack seen together in this video. >> one would say authenticity is being as you are and expressing as you are. >> i don't know why. that makes me want to cry. it's beautiful. >> reporter: former member sarah edmondson say women were forced to sign confidentiality agreements and branded with the symbol incorporating raniere's initials without any anesthesia. >> it was a horror movie. it was the most inhumane horrific way to treat anybody. >> reporter: abc news obtaining documents showing mack now in talks for plea negotiations. an indictment against both mack and raniere says they knowingly and intentionally conspired to recruit, entice, harbor, patronize and solicit persons. it goes on to say they engaged in such acts knowing that means of force, threats of force, and coercion would be used

to cause such persons to engage in one or more commercial sex acts. in a letter posted last fall on nxivm's website, raniere said there is no merit to the els that we are abusing, coercing or harming individuals. these allegations are most disturbing to me as nonviolence is one of my most important values. he also said the sorority is not part of nxivm and i'm not associated with the group. actress catherine oxenberg, best known for her role in "dynasty," said her daughter told her she was branded by the group. >> he finally needs to be held accountable for every single woman and child that he's ever harmed, abused, exploited. >> reporter: now both mack and raniere are being held without bail. today's hearing will determine if bail will be granted for mack. robin, i know you have more. >> yes, we do. we'll bring in dan abrams. tell us why they would make a deal here. >> they must be talking to her about testifying against him. that's the way you do it. you work your way up in an organization like this and, remember, they think that she was a very senior member of this organization. now being held without bail

facing the possibility of up to life in prison. she's basically facing the same charges that he is as of today, so, if they're willing to cut a deal with her, it means they think that she's going to be the ticket to bringing him down and potentially for more charges. >> right, but we have to wait to see because as you said these are serious charges but could they be lenient toward her for a certain reason? >> yeah, i mean, look, i think they want to determine was she a victim, was she -- >> brainwashed. >> was she brainwashed, maybe. as a result, should she have less criminal responsibility than someone like him? or was she acting with sort of evil intent and this is one of those difficult things to sort out. but the fact that so quickly they're talking to her about a deal indicates to me, a, that they're willing to offer her a deal, probably to testify against him, and, b, that they're going to offer her some sort of leniency here. and you have to believe that they're going to view her to some degree as a victim.

westminster abbey, the bells there ringing to celebrate his arrival. we'll have more on that coming up in the show. we'll start out with that deadly attack in toronto where a driver ran over ten people. at least ten are dead and the killer now in custody. want to go back to tom llamas on the scene. good morning, tom. >> reporter: george, good morning, again. the attack happened just behind me here on yonge street. you can hear helicopters still in the air. the investigation still ongoing. we've seen investigators collecting evidence nearly a day later. now, this attack happened at 1:30 during the lunch hour. eyewitnesses tell us it was absolute carnage. police say alek minassian turned a rental van into a killing machine, zigzagging from the street to the sidewalk, mowing down people, killing at least ten, and injuring 15 others. some of those fighting for their lives this morning. police then cornering him in a dramatic exchange caught on video. minassian mimicking he had a gun which he did not, acting like he was ready to fire on police.

days after delivery, most affect the mother but things like bleeding, infection, high blood pressure, depression, infection is said to happen 6% of times even after a normal delivery. depression, anywhere from 10 to 20%. so we follow the mom for those thing. >> are there different procedures over in the uk as opposed to having a child in the u.s.? >> there sure are. they are doing it right in great britain. they put a lot of the focus on the mom where we put a lot of the focus on the baby. so there is incredible support and standardized care so they do it the same exact way like a military submarine every single time. they use midwives over 50% of the time. so the mother is really supported not just during pregnancy and delivery but postpartum. >> okay, how many women especially when you saw her walk out with high heels, high heels seven hours -- that is what we're all -- >> right. >> whoo. wow. >> so, again, let's talk about the future queen and let's talk about the average woman. this is her job. i can't imagine anyone would want full hair and makeup, a

dress and heels but that's her job and, of course there's swelling, everyone has swollen ankles, hands and face after delivery. i'm sure she would rather be in flats and for the average woman, there's actually more swelling after delivery in the next couple of days and then it starts to go down but that's something also we keep a close eye on. that did not look fun for me at all. >> but she, bless her heart, she is -- her grace and everything and how she's handled everything -- >> we also have to say leaving the hospital so quickly is probably as much for the other new moms there as it is for herself. you know, she brings a lot of security and a lot of press, a lot of attention. she's probably being mindful of their privacy at this point and her security and privacy is better at the palace. >> i know exactly but also because you have to think about the other moms. that's their moment too for the other moms having babies. >> i'm sure she's thinking of them. >> thanks. george. >> we'll get the latest from "american idol." [ applause ] now a possible solution to a growing problem, millions of american children face every single say struggling to keep up with their schoolwork. many of them don't have high speed internet access at home. but now google says they have an answer. in a rural community of clarksville, tennessee, the school bus ride is shifting into the future. in this remote town, some students begin their day well before dawn. >> my alarm goes off around 4:45. it's very hard to get up because the sunlight is not even out. >> reporter: their commute up to

an hour and a half each way, valuable time once wasted until now. >> normally i just talk but now we have wi-fi so i just do my homework. >> reporter: enter the rolling study hall. google's program to turn travel time into study time, providing kids with laptops and equipping school buses with onboard wi-fi. essential but sometimes inaccessible tools for the web-based homework assignments. >> many of our students come in from a long distance and some of them don't have internet access in their homes. one of the sayings you'll hear in many of our schools is every minute matters. ♪ >> reporter: on the road, that web use limited to just schoolwork and just like any study hall, a teacher to help keep the students on track. >> open your classroom back up. >> having the google bus makes people more productive so when they get back to school they can't say i don't have wi-fi at home because you have wi-fi on the bus. don't lie.

think somehow i have pretended to be some kind of therapist in a way and so people -- i'm not saying it's good advice but they come over. and i sort of, you know, make things up and they sound kind of interesting but this is not a dear abby book. this book is based on all the mistakes i've made so i'm trying to save you from making a lot of the mistakes i've made. which i'm sure he could write a trilogy about. but starting with this morning, but it's more about that. it's more about, you know -- then there's cautionary tales. i have had three friends that have lost their husbands to the sexy babysitter. and my feeling is, don't hire a hot babysitter. you don't -- you don't go to a bakery when you're on a diet, right? i just don't understand that. >> basic advice that you give us, that's why we ask you, ali. >> it's basic but people don't always get it.
