>> announcer: live, where you live. this is abc 7 news. gunshots terrorized a neighborhood in millbrae during a wild party at an air bnb rental. tonight the community is demanding answers from the city. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> tonight air bnb responded, banning the rental's owner sxwlp abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. [ gunshots ] >> reporter: a home sufshlts camera captured the moment shots rang out in a millbrae neighborhood around 1:45 sunday morning. paul larsen knew exactly where it came from. the house next door, an air bnb where a party had been going on for hours. >> all of a sudden i heard pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow -- eight quick gunshots. >> reporter: larsen had watched people arrive all afternoon and evening on saturday. at one point a truck delivered a large barbecue.

he called police twice about the loud music and noise. san mateo county sheriff deputies came but there was nothing they could do. until the gunfire. >> they located some evidence at the scene which was collected. some shell casings and things of that nature. >> the partygoers had already run off. larsen rallied his neighbors to confront the city council tuesday night. >> if you feel this is important, please applaud. thank you. >> reporter: some neighbors said this wasn't the first air bnb gone wrong. >> when this happened to us my family felt threatened. >> reporter: air bnb told abc 7 negative incidents are extremely rare. the company released a statement that reads in part "we have zero tolerance for this type of behavior and have permanently banned the guest from our platform." the mayor said anyone operating a short-term rental in millbrae needs a business license. she said in this case the homeowner did not have one. >> we are going to be looking at it very quickly because we cannot have this happening again. >> reporter: the city council will consider more formal regulations at its next meeting. in millbrae katie marzullo, abc

7 news. raging flames collapsed scaffolding. tonight firefighters continue to attack hot spots in a fire that has burned a construction site for the last 22 hours. the construction site is at concord boulevard and galindo street, right in the heart of downtown concord. early estimates put the damage at $55 million. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is there live tonight. lisa? >> reporter: dan, this fire is still actively burning. in fact, there is that orange glow behind me. that just popped up a little while ago. the atf will be here tomorrow morning. meantime, the people who are living in that apartment complex right over there, they've been evacuated because of some serious safety concerns. crews are worried that more of the building will tumble. a five story-high scaffolding collapsed in just ten seconds crushing four parked cars. >> we do anticipate potentially further wall collapses. at this point in time we're in

defensive operations. >> this was one of the largest fires in concord's recent history. it moved fast, tearing through the mostly wood-framed apartment building, which was set to open later this year. >> the flames were over that. >> all of those living in renaissance square apartments across the street ran for their lives. hot embers and ash fell from the sky and landed all over their building. today evacuees were given a few minutes to get inside their homes and pack only the essentials. because as long as this is unstable the renaissance is in jeopardy too. >> come here. come on. >> reporter: vincent balbano wasn't able to leave with his cats once the fire alarms went off. now he's back, determined to get them out. his persistent paid off. >> calm down. calm down. i know you're scared. >> i had to come back for them. >> reporter: most evacuees are staying with family and friends though the red cross is offering

shelter at a nearby church. two people were injured in this fire. in concord lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. three other large projects have burned in the east bay over the last two years, all considered arson. this one in emeryville in july of 2016. just ten months later investigators say someone started a fire that burned the same site. and in oakland last summer another fire. all three were started in the centers of the buildings before sprinklers and flame-resistant sheet rock were added. there's a $110,000 reward to help find whoever started these three fires. police in texas captured a man-hours after they believe he shot two dallas police officers and a home despot security guard. police claim the suspect fired at them during a chase across dallas. the suspect drove on a sidewalk moments before being caught tonight. the manhunt began following a shooting at a home depot this afternoon when officers tried to detain a suspect wanted for theft. both wounded officers and the home depot guard underwent surgery tonight.

we are learning more tonight about the canadian man who rammed a van into pedestrians. ten people were killed. toronto police described al alek minassian as being mentally troubled. "the new york times" reports minassian posted a hostile message toward women on facebook moments before yesterday's attack. police don't believe it was an act of terror, but they have not ruled that out. the albany school district is awarding students who posted race involvement photos on social media half a million dollars. tonight for the first time parents confronted the school board about the settlement. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen was at tonight's school board meeting. >> that's what those images meant to you? they meant money? >> reporter: parents are furious at the albany school board over lawsuits the district settled to the tune of $400,000 and counting. that money is going to students who posted racist images of other students on instagram last year. >> images of herself compared to a gorilla and her friends with

nooses tied around their necks. >> it was comparing her to an animal. >> reporter: cheryl suta's daughter along with other students and a teacher that wr fathers of the posts. after albany high administrators found out about the racist images they along with the school district took inappropriate disciplinary action against the posters, one of whom was punched in the face by another student. >> there was a lot of ruckus, and then they were escorted, almost paraded through a crowd of students. >> it should have been handled in a much more structured way. >> this is definitely a first amendment case. >> reporter: daryl yorkie is an attorney representing six of the students who are suing the albany unified school district. his clients were involved in the instagram photos. >> i don't think the school should have disciplined them at all. this was speech that occurred completely outside of school on a platform that wasn't sponsored by school amongst students on a private account. >> reporter: in an open letter a group of parents listed demands to the school district including compensating each of the students targeted by the

instagram posts $80,000. the same amount some of the instagram posters are receiving. in albany kate larsen, abc 7 news. a federal judge delivered a big legal setback to president trump's administration today by ruling that new applications must be allowed for the daca program. daca protects about 700,000 undocumented immigrants from being deported. most of them were brought to the united states as children. immigration advocates say today's ruling highlights the trump administration's failure to explain why it ended daca. the government has 90 days to explain that decision to the judge. it's not a sweep, but it's pretty clean nonetheless. the warriors beat the spurs tonight. >> now they will face the new orleans pelicans in round 2 starting this saturday. abc 7's sports director larry beil is live at oracle tonight. larry? >> reporter: hey, dan. you can call it a gentleman's sweep. it was five games. and it got a little stressful there in the final minute as the spursz cut it down to a

two-point game. but the warriors do hang on and they hold off san antonio by a final of 99-91. the warriors taking advantage of the home atmosphere. oracle was rocking. and klay thompson found his shot after struggling in game 4. he had 17 in the first half, finished with 24. draymond green had 19 rebounds and kevin durant with 10 of his 25 in the fourth quarter to clinch the series four games to one. the dubs have nothing but love for the spurs who battled despite their head coach dealing with personal tragedy. >> they put up a hell of a fight tonight. they are obviously a championship organization, and they've been doing this for a long time. and they're a reflection of their coach. we're still obviously thinking about pop. pop, if you're watching out there, we love you. our whole team and coaching staff has been thinking about you every day.

neutrality rules. california's senate judiciary committee voted in favor of a bill by state senator scott wiener to create regulations preventing companies like at&t and comcast from giving preferential treatment to certain websites and apps. the fcc voted last year to rescind the rules. california's bill now heads to the senate appropriations committee. first it was plastic bags. now a new campaign is under way to ban plastic straws and other disposable foodware used in restaurants. an ordinance introduced tonight before the berkeley city council would require restaurants to use reusable cups, dishes, and utensils. customers would be charged for takeout foodware. straws would only be available upon request. now, one business that's ahead of the curve on getting rid of plastic foodware is san francisco's taco-licious. it did away with plastic draws altogether a few months ago. the restaurant estimates it used more than 600,000 straws at its five restaurants each year. >> the thing about straws is they're so little no one thinks about them. they don't think about the impact they're making.

it's such an easy thing to do to just start drinking your margaritas, your cocktails without a straw. >> taco-licious does offer paper straws but only if a customer asks for one. some powerful voices shared an empowering message today at the professional businesswomen of california conference. abc 7 news was at the moscone center where ashley judd, jane fonda, qulil tomlin, maria shriver and congresswoman jackie speier were among those who spoke. this year it was all about the empowerment movement with the top issue being the gender pay gap. >> we're talking about it. women are talking about what their salaries are and figuring out that the guy is getting a whole lot more -- >> you weren't supposed to talk about it. you could be fired if you talked about your salary. >> 6,000 people, mostly women, attended. abc 7 has been a proud sponsor of the professional businesswomen of california conference since the beginning. >> it's a great event. very inspiring stuff.

the weather cooperated in the city and all around the bay area for whatever you had planned. >> that's right. meteorologist sandhya patel here with what's coming our way. sandhya. >> what's coming our way is even cooler weather than we saw today. by the way, that professional businesswomen's conference, yes, it was very inspirational. i was there as well. take a look at this time lapse from our east bay hills camera. here's why the cooling trend is going to continue. you see there's a lot more cloud cover this afternoon. also the fog down below. and that marine influence was greater today which is why inland areas had temperatures drop in double digits this afternoon. you may have noticed it. and the cooling trend is going it continue, although not as pronounced tomorrow. a few more degrees of cooling expected tomorrow. one thing you'll need to watch out for if you're driving is the fog. definitely some low visibility out there so be careful. if you're taking the ferry across the bay, commute time. if you're walking it will be foggy and cool enough where you need to gran the extra layer.

not only the fog down bebut the clouds up above. visibility running low in places like santa rosa half moon bay between seven and eight miles. temperatures now in the 40s and the 50s. if you're wondering where those temperatures are headed, this temperature trend for san jose pretty much spells it out. you will notice tomorrow afternoon 75 degrees still pretty pleasant. 71 on thursday. and then those temperatures do come down even more. so they bottom out as we head into the weekend. it will be noticeably cooler for many of you around the region. here's a live picture right now from our emeryville camera where the fog is there in the background and it will be with you during the commute. sunny for the afternoon inland. cooling trend continues through friday and sprinkles are possible at the end of the week. so tomorrow when you get going or you're taking your kids off to school just make sure you bundle them up. it is going to be cool. mid 40s to low 50s. fog will be widespread across the region. the hour by hour forecast shows it to you. 5:00 a.m. you'll notice a pretty good push not just around the coast but the east bay heading down the peninsula into the

south bay and also up into the north bay. definitely will be a murky, dry with low visibility and then for the afternoon the fog pultz away and just hangs out near the coast which we expect to see around the summertime. this is a little early but we'll take take it. temperatures in the 50s along the coast with the fog. temperatures in the mid to upper 70s for your wednesday. really an overall pleasant-looking day. as those temperatures do continue to come down. here's what may be coming down as we head toward friday and saturday. possibly some sprinkles or some drizzle. you will notice it will measure by a few hundredths of an inch. not a lot except around ukia where we expect the pshl for up to .08 of an inch. accuweather seven-day forecast, a foggy start for your wednesday and then lingering fog along the coast. we'll continue with that theme with those temperatures continuing to drop. sprinkles possible for the end of the workweek going into the weekend. those temperatures will run lower than where they should be for this time of year. mid 50s to mid 60s for your weekend plans. and then we'll see those temperatures coming right back up again. you can download the accuweather
