it's kits at the county criminal lab, and the steps they take to clear it up. chris wynn has the story. >> reporter: at valley medical center in san jose, survivors of sexual assault can come here for an exwham a specialist. >> we can assess for injury. we can swab the area for touch dna or sweat. >> nurses doing the best they can to provide help to those seek going. >> they do it with an expect aches that something is happening with that evidence. so find out that the evidence has not been processed can actually add to the trauma. and that feeling of not being supported. >> reporter: across the country thousands of rape kits go untested every year. in santa clara county a recent push to prioritize brought the backlog down to 200 cases but now district two supervisor cindy kmafz is working with the district attorney to clear it away. moving forward, chavez wants to have all rape kits processed within 30 days of submission. she is proposing a plan to add three more analysts as well as a
