live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> i'm gonna kill you. i'm gonna kill you. >> a man sworn to protect the public under arrest tonight. he is accused of living a double life, terrorizing quiet communities and becoming one of california's most feared serial killers and rapists. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. former police officer joseph james deangelo was arrested after dna linked him to several murders. the technology police used wasn't available even five years ago. >> police say years ago he was more widely known as the east area rapist than the golden state killer, responsible for upwards of 50 rapes and a dozen murders across california. before then, he served in the navy in vietnam. bruce harrington, whose brother

and sister-in-law were victims, had a message for the survivors. >> sleep better tonight. he isn't coming through the window. >> law enforcement says more charges could follow as the investigation continues. we have team coverage tonight. >> let's begin with abc 7 news reporter lilian kim with new details on this stunning arrest today. >> dan and ama, those who have been working on the case found the need until the haystack, their suspect living in plain sight in a sacramento suburb. investigators say he terrorized california for more than a decade. but now joseph james deangelo is in police custody. the 72-year-old was arrested outside his sacramento county home. >> the magnitude of this case demanded that it be solved. >> at least 12 murders, upwards of 50 rapes, and more than 100 burglaries spread fear across the state from 1974 to 1986. they began in and around sacramento, moved on to the bay area and then to southern california. the crimes were meticulously planned.

investigators say deangelo wore a ski mask and broke into homes, then gagged, blindfolded and tied up his victims before carrying out his brutal attacks. bruce harrington's brother and sister-in-law were among the murder victims. >> for the 51 ladies who were brutally raped in this crime scene, sleep better tonight. he isn't coming through the window. he's now in jail, and he's history. >> deangelo only became a suspect days ago when investigators got a break in the case. then a discarded dna sample provided the confirmation they needed. deangelo was a former police officer who worked near visalia and auburn. >> obviously we'll be looking into whether it was on the job. >> this case is far from over. deangelo has only been arrested for a few of the murders. prosecutors promise nor charges in the coming days. lilian kim, abc 7 news. deangelo's neighbors say he

was quirky and had a temper, but they never suspected he could be a possible killer. he lived in the sacramento suburb of citrus heights for 30 years. neighbors say he shared a home with his daughter and granddaughter. some neighbors remember how the crimes that he is now accused of terrorized the state. >> i remember my mother and grandmother being terrified. and my dad. it was literally just terrifying. >> i can't believe he has been that close for that long. this is always a calm and quiet family friendly area. >> sacramento county sheriff says when deputies arrested deangelo at his home, he cooperated and told them he had a roast in the oven. officers told him they'd take care of it. authorities believe this all started with a crime spree in visalia in the early '70s. by 1976, deangelo had moved to the sacramento area. that's where police say he began raping and sexually assaulting victims. in 1978, it's believed he killed for the first time, murdering brian and katie maggiore in

rancho cordova. later that year he began terrorizing quiet bay areas. these are the 11 sexual assaults he is tied to. his final bay area crime was in danville in july of 1979. by the end of that year, the golden state killer moved on to southern california. that's where he shifted almost exclusively to murders. these are all of his suspected victims. look at the timeline. now the daughter of one of the golden state killer's southern california victims lives in santa cruz, and she sat down with katie marzullo to talk about the devastating loss of her father and what today's arrest means to her. >> i just started shaking. >> jennifer carroll was home in santa cruz when she learned the accused golden state killer had been arrested. >> i never in my lifetime expected to see that. >> carol grew up in ventura with her mom and two brothers not far from her dad and his second wife charlene. she remembers the day in 1980 when her mom told her limon and

charlene were dead. >> as things progressed, we learned they were bludgeoned to death with a log from a stack of firewood they had outside their home. >> reporter: 20 years later, investigators told carol they linked the murders to the golden state killer. and now in 2018, the arrest of joseph deangelo. >> and to find out he is just live his life. >> the news was also just sinking in for people who live near the home in ventura where the murders took place. >> i don't think anybody is really comfortable that it happened obviously in their neighborhood, and they felt terrible about it. we've never talked to the neighbors about it. >> carol hopes if anything positive can come from such a tragedy, it's that neighbors do talk to each other and look out for one another. >> if you hear a dog barking in the night. if you see something that doesn't make sense, speak up. >> as for the suspected golden state killer, she wants a confession. >> save us a bunch of agony and drama and i would like him to be in general population where he has to live every moment of his life in terror.

>> if there is a trial, carol is ready to testify. in santa cruz, katie marzullo, abc news. >> a victim of the east area rapist is speaking publicly tonight. she relived the terror of being tied up and described what her attacker said when she was just 13 years old. >> do you want to die? do you want me to kill your mother? he asked in a harsh whisper, do you want to die? do you want me to kill your mother? i just told him i don't care. >> she was assaulted inside her sacramento home in 1977. since then she has advocated for other survivors of sexual assaults. >> now another victim of the east area rapists received a chilling phone call. and police recorded it after wiretapping her phone. some of the sounds are muffled. but you can clearly hear the word "kill" from this call made in 1978. listen. >> i'm gonna kill you. i'm gonna kill you.

i'm gonna kill you. >> it is chilling. police in the sacramento area also received a call from a man claiming to be the east area rapist. and that caller taunted the officer who answered, bragging he'd never be caught. >> police in visalia suspect the golden state killer got a start as a notorious local criminal. the ransacker broke into about 100 homes in 1974 and 1975. the chief police said the ransacker relied on some of the break-in tricks used by the golden state killer. you're about to hear that officer speak after he survived the violent confrontation. >> i fell down, the impact knocked me back. and he continued to run, throwing some items, apparently taken in the burglary in the area.

>> visalia police also believe the ransacker killed this man, claude snelling. snelling was shot while saving his teenaged daughter from a man who was trying to kidnap her. he worked as a police officer in nearby exeter at the time. now summer also crediting a true crime journalist for helping solve this case. michelle mcnamara wrote a book titled "i'll be gone in the dark" chronicling her obsessive search for the killer. she was in the middle of writing when she died in 2016. her colleagues finished it two months ago with an afterward by her husband, patton oswald, who posted this video to instagram today. >> you did it, michelle. even though the cops are never going to say it. but your book helped get this thing closed. >> actor rob lowe tweeted congratulations, patton oswald. michelle did it, and possibly also proved heaven is real.

hayward police tell us no one was hurt after a man fired a gun at an officer near the hayward b.a.r.t station. officers did not return fire. the man was wanted in connection with another crime. he is now in custody. trains have skipped the hayward e t:00 this evening. hundreds flocked to grace cathedral tonight, but this wasn't your typical service. while worshipping, everyone was listening to beyonce. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen was there. ♪ i'm a survivor, i'm not going

to give up, i'm not going to fall, i'm going to work harder ♪ >> san francisco's grace cathedral looked and sound more like a concert than a church for a first of its kind beyonce mass. >> it was amazing. it was one of the best spiritual experience i've ever had. >> it was fun. it was uplifting. it was also really rejuvenating. >> people wrapped around the side of the cathedral an hour ahead of time to attend. normally the wednesday night service has 50 people in attendance. but with beyonce in the house, this service had 750 people. >> we didn't expect this response. >> reverend jude harmon said they put the service on facebook and it blew up. >> we thought it would be a small exploration as a community about what it means to lift up black female voices. >> i use beyonce as a central figure to have these conversations about the realities that black women face. >> reverend yolanda norton is the brain behind the mass. norton is a professor at san francisco theological seminary.

she explains that she is using beyonce's wide appeal to bring a diverse group of people together. >> i know people think that we're worshipping beyonce. none of that is true. this is a way to just have different kinds of conversation. >> norton says nothing is scheduled yet, but this will not be the last beyonce mass. in san francisco, kate larsen, abc 7 news. crews hope that they can start demolition tomorrow morning at an unfinished apartment complex that's burned for nearly two days in concord. that fire started early yesterday morning. experts from around the country, including the atf, are helping find out exactly what happened. investigators have to wait until part of the building is torn down to make it safe enough for them to go inside. it's just a husk, really, that's left. evacuated residents of a nearby apartment complex returned home for just a few minutes to get some of their personal items. the woman who accused 49ers linebacker rubin foster of beating her now says she lied about it.

prosecutors filed domestic violence charges against foster two weeks ago. his former girlfriend, alissa ennis now claims her injuries were cause beside afight with another woman. a statement released today by ennis' attorney says foster tried to end the relationship after he learned about the fight and said she was extremely upset and if he broke up with her she would trash his career. foster remains on the 49ers roster. subway is closing 500 restaurants nationwide. at the same time the chain plans to expand internationally. subway suffered a sales decline of more than 4% last year due to competition. the company plans to win customers by revamping many restaurants, adding more comfortable seating, kiosks for ordering, wifi, and usb charging ports. it also announced a rewards program last month. . get your sandwich. enjoy lunch outside maybe. it's been nice. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast. >> if you're going to be picnicking outside, make sure you have a jacket tomorrow.
