but we'll begin with that huge break in a cold case terrorizing california for decades. police say they now have the golden state killer in custody. >> and they used dna testing to find him. so many families are relieved this morning. >> the killer accused of murdering at least 12 people, sexually assaulting more than 50. 72-year-old joseph james deangelo, former police officer, family man, hiding in plain slight in suburban sacramento. abc's whit johnson is there with new details on the stunning break. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning. absolute shock in this quiet community that the man who terrorized california for so long may have been living right here. the golden state killer vanished in the '80s, gone for decades until investigators say a key piece of dna evidence connected the dots just days ago. the 40-year manhunt for one of the most prolific serial killers in american history perhaps coming to an end at this suburban home. >> we found the needle in the haystack and it was right here in sacramento. >> reporter: police say this

man, 72-year-old joseph james deangelo is the elusive golden state killer. the former police officer allegedly responsible for at least 12 murders, upwards of 50 rapes and more than 100 burglaries in california from 1976 to 1986. deangelo's name never coming up in prior investigations, but just six days ago, a critical clue. >> we started some surveillance. we were able to get some discarded dna and we were able to confirm what we thought we already knew, that we had our man. >> reporter: deangelo, seemingly hiding in plain sight, police surprising him and taking him into custody on tuesday as he was leaving his home. >> for the 51 ladies who were brutally raped in this crime scene, sleep better tonight. he isn't coming through the window. he's now in jail. and he's history. thank you. >> reporter: deangelo's arrest

bringing relief to victims and their families. >> i woke up to a text from a very good friend of mine who said do you think this is really the guy and they had an article attached saying they had somebody, they had made an arrest and i just started shaking. i never in my lifetime expected to see that. >> reporter: authorities say he worked as an officer at two different police departments until he was reportedly fired in 1979 for shoplifting dog repellant and a hammer. >> very possibly he was committing the crimes during the time he was employed as a peace officer. >> reporter: also known as the original night stalker and east area rapist the killer taunted police. >> you're never gonna catch me. >> reporter: and his victims, with phone calls long after the attacks. >> gonna kill you. gonna kill you. >> reporter: leaving the entire state on edge. a significant development came in the mid '90s, dna testing

connecting the puzzle pieces to one unknown person. crime writer michelle mcnamara who coined the phrase the golden state killer made it her life's work to hunt him down. she discussed the serial killer in an interview with filmmaker cameron cloutier. >> i'm very struck by people did not call out there was a weird guy hanging around so he had to fit in. but on the other hand, it's just the level of violence is so extreme. >> reporter: mcnamara died in 2016. but with the help of her researchers and husband, comedian patton oswalt, her book "i'll be gone in the dark" was completed and released in february. it debuted at number one on "the new york times" best-seller's list sparking national interest in the case. >> you did it, michelle. even though the cops will never say it but your book helped get this thing closed. >> reporter: the charges against deangelo continue to pile up. prosecutors believe that key

dna evidence will link him to dozens of crimes spanning ten countries, expect more charges in the coming days. robin. >> we'll talk more about that, whit, with sacramento district attorney anne marie schubert who joins us live this morning. what a relief. so many people relieved waking up this morning and we know that this case has been cold for decades and deangelo's name didn't even surface until just six days ago, is that right? >> that's correct. that's correct. >> and the discarded dna didn't come from a tip from -- coming into your office so tell us a little more about the discarded dna and how that was the key. >> well, as we said yesterday, this case was really solved through some innovative dna techniques and so, as a result of that, that led to law enforcement essentially as the sheriff said yesterday surveilling him and obtaining a sample of abandoned or discarded dna and from there we moved forward and they did additional testing and that's what solved

this case. >> my goodness. we know that he was once married. he was a police officer, an officer at the time of the crimes. when you look at grown children, how does he fit the profile that investigators are working with at the time? >> well, he was never on a list so now we're at a point now as i said yesterday this is like lightning speed so everything is now trying -- is an active investigation but, i think all those answers are going to be filled in over time, though. >> it is an active investigation and we appreciate you sharing as much as you are and we heard in the report as right now he's been charged with the first two known killings in the so-called golden state killing. how many more do you suspect and we know that the last killing was in 1986 but will he possibly look to -- for other cases since that time? >> yeah, they'll absolutely look for additional cases. what we know now that he is

responsible for at least 12, perhaps 13. i'm fully confident he will be charged with an additional count of murder because he's linked by dna to several other murders including in orange county and santa barbara county. >> ma'am, what do you want to say to people about the work that went into this and even though it was decades old that your office and everyone was not going to let this go unsolved? >> well, it's all about passion and persistence and ultimately about dna and i've always believed that dna is a silent witness to the truth and that truth may have been quieted for 40-something years but beer's now here and have the answer. >> we appreciate your work very much. anne marie schubert, thank you so much. have a good day. >> thank you. >> thank you. the golden state killer's last known victim was janelle cruz. she was just 18 years old when police say she was murdered in 1986. her sister michelle who's been fighting to bring the killer to justice ever since joins us now. thanks so much for joining us this morning. really appreciate your time.

we know you and your family have been waiting 32 years for someone to be charged with your sister's murder so how does this feel right now. >> it's surreal. it's unbelievable. i'm so thankful this journey is finally over and i can rest. i can go to bed at night and rest easier knowing that he's in jail and he'll never walk free again. >> we know that you spoke to other victims and family members. what does this arrest mean for all of you collectively? >> wow, everybody is so overwhelmed right now. i don't even think that we are processing it. it's just happened so quick. we're just going through a lot of different emotions. i've spoken to debbie domingo the other day, actually the night before yesterday, and she was still apprehensive. she wasn't sure if this was true or not and i spoke to jane carson-sandler and we cried over the phone.

i spoke to margaret who was one of the youngest rape victims and she was just overwhelmed with joy. she was so happy. so we're just all going through so many different emotions right now. >> and michelle, what can you tell us about your sister janelle? >> janelle, gosh, just like a free spirit. really sweet, she was the type of person that would stand up for you if you were to be the person being bullied. she was sort of my backbone. just a good person, a big heart. >> well, it's been 32 years, and you have been pushing from the beginning and i want to say that we hope that you and your family can breathe a little bit easier and we still have prayers for you and all the other victims out there with this horrific crime, so thank you so much, michelle. really appreciate your time. >> thank you so much. i appreciate that. >> and it was something, for 32 years michelle has been on

prove that. >> reporter: while jackson may be withdrawing his nomination to the lead the v.a., white house confirms he's staying on in his current role as the president's physician. as for who the president may pick to the v.a. he said he already has someone else in mind. >> lot going on again today. the latest on president trump's legal battles. his personal attorney michael cohen now says he will take the fifth in the stormy daniels case as the president's new lawyer rudy giuliani re-opens discussions with special counsel robert mueller about an interview with the president. our chief national correspondent tom llamas is here with the details. >> reporter: good morning to you. we have those court documents right here and in them, the president's attorney, michael cohen, says he will plead the fifth amendment in the case brought by adult film star stormy daniels declaring to the judge, i will assert my fifth amendment right in connection with the proceedings in this case due to the ongoing criminal investigation by the fbi and u.s. attorney for the southern

district of new york. now, he is citing his rights against self-incrimination because of a criminal investigation targeting him. that's when the fbi raided his new york office, his home and his hotel room. he says the agency took his electronic devices and documents which include information pertaining to that $130,000 payment cohen made to daniels to keep her quiet about accusations about a sexual affair with president trump. the president denied the affair and knowing anything about the payment. about pleading the fifth here's what then-candidate trump said on the trail in iowa. >> like you see on the mob, right? you see the mob takes the fifth. if you're innocent, why are you taking the fifth amendment? >> reporter: now, those words coming back to haunt him, at least when it comes to his personal attorney michael cohen. stormy daniels' attorney will file a response and the u.s. district judge will have to decide on this case. >> in the meantime, the president's new attorney, rudy giuliani, has now met with robert mueller. he hopes to wrap this up

quickly. >> reporter: that's right. he was president trump's rottweiler on the campaign trail and now on his legal team and he said yesterday there is not a stitch of evidence that the president colluded with the russians. sources tell abc news, ever since that cohen raid, though, the president is less inclined to sit down with mueller. okay, tom, let's talk to chief legal analyst dan abrams about this right now. you know, that statement by rudy giuliani not a stitch of evidence that president trump colluded with the russians could be a critical omission. >> right, because, look, here's what we know. we know that 13 russians have been indicted for trying to influence the election helping donald trump. we know that a number of senior campaign officials have admitted to lying about conversations with the russians during the campaign. so, there's more than a stitch of evidence that something was happening there. doesn't mean it was the trump campaign. doesn't mean it was donald trump but it does mean that it's worth investigating. it is important to listen to him separate donald trump himself from the trump campaign, because robert mueller is investigating connections between the trump campaign and the russians.

>> and acknowledging by omission they may have some evidence there. meantime, this idea that now michael cohen is pleading the fifth. you're saying you're not surprised by that. >> not at all. of course, he has to plead the fifth. he is in real trouble. even his own attorneys concede that he will likely be indicted so, if that's the case, of course, you can't testify in connection with a civil case over money damages when you're facing the possibility of serious prison time. anyone in his situation would be pleading the fifth which is what makes president trump's previous statement, you know, so troubling. >> right. dan abrams, thanks very much. zmrmpbts lot going on in the nba playoffs. it is play time and overnight, lebron james proved once again why he is called the king. take a look. lebron nailing a game-winning three-pointer.

for more than two decades lyle and erik menendez have served their times in separate prisons. earlier this month, lyle was transferred to the same facility, even the same housing unit as his little brother erik. for the first time since being reunited, lyle is speaking exclusively with daily mail tv and we have the very first look. >> 22 years exactly. >> reporter: 22 years since the last time lyle and erik menendez were face-to-face after being convicted of murdering their parents in their upscale beverly hills home. >> i remember firing directly at him. >> reporter: at the time, speaking to barbara walters, erik then dreading the possibility of a life away from his brother. >> we will spend the rest of our life in prison. if we're not put in the same prison, there's a good probability that i will never see him again. and that would be -- that would be very, very difficult to live through. >> reporter: they would, until earlier this month. lyle finally transferred to the same southern california prison

as his brother. that grin on his face saying it all and now he's speaking out to daily mail tv for the first time about that reunion. >> i ended up bursting into tears, which is quite an emotional thing, almost unexpectedly so, i think for me. it was just something i wasn't sure was ever going to happen. it was just a remarkable moment. >> it's very emotional. lyle was not sure how he was going to respond to this day. there was a lot of trepidation, a lot of emotion. all of this time apart has been like an open wound, the fact that they are now finally back together serving out the rest of their prison sentences is finally starting to heal the process. >> reporter: the brothers have maintained the killing was an act of desperation after years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father, abuse they say their mother ignored, and that they feared for their lives. >> i thought they were going ahead with their plan to kill us. >> reporter: but lyle now saying if he could do it all again he wouldn't resort to murder. >> if i could take my consciousness now and go back, i would have gone to the police and taken my chances in exposing what was happening.

>> reporter: and as for that damning confession erik made to his then therapist, an admission that got its way back into pop culture on "law & order's" true crime -- >> he told me everything. how you shot your parents, where you bought the shotgun. >> oh, god, erik. >> i had to tell someone. i wanted to kill myself. >> i wish that he had, you know, just talked to me or, you know, spent more time just going to his parish priest and not ended up in sort of this therapist's hands. >> reporter: lyle says he's forgiven his brother erik and that their close relationship has remained a constant. >> erik and i have never had any moments of animosity. or anything like that. i love him deeply. >> erik says he's not ready to speak yet but the brothers once housed more than 500 miles apart get to see each other every day. that's something their family is also very happy about. the complete interview will air on daily mail tv

alexa was capable of doing something she was not designed to do, eavesdrop. they're some of the hottest tech gadgets on the market. >> alexa, tell me a joke. >> reporter: smart speakers like amazon's alexa expected to sell more than 43 million units by the end of this year. >> hi there. >> reporter: but this morning, researchers say they were able to find a flaw that could have let alexa record a user without that user knowing it. alexa typically stops recording after it fulfills a command. >> alexa, where is the nearest jewelry store? >> reporter: but take a look at this. researchers at cybersecurity firm checkmarx say they discovered that flaw after using a calculator app it created. >> what do you want to calculate? >> 7 times 6. >> reporter: alexa kept recording after giving the answer. >> the result is 42. >> an unsuspecting user believes the session with alexa has ended. we are still being recorded, but

everything is uploaded to amazon. >> it's essentially to have an intruder in your home in the privacy of your home listening to what you are talking about. >> reporter: checkmarx said it disclosed this particular issue to amazon after it was discovered and before hackers had a chance to exploit it. amazon tells abc news they fixed the problem, saying customer trust is important to us and we take security and privacy seriously. we have put mitigations in place for detecting this type of skill behavior and reject or suppress those skills when we do. but these tech experts say companies are facing a constant battle when it comes to cybersecurity. >> this type of eavesdropping tool or skill could have made it into the echo store or the skills store and that could be a concern. there's always something that researchers haven't thought of yet or that a company hasn't fully considered. >> what is the chance of rain? >> so many own these smart speakers.

deangelo was arrested at his sacramento-area home tuesday evening. he was a former police officer in two separate departments. police say he is responsible for at least a dozen murders, 50 rapes, and more than 100 burglaries throughout california from 1976 to 1986. his name never came up in prior cases but just six days ago investigators say a dna match began connecting the dots. the details of this case are absolutely gruesome. the way he would tie up, blindfold, gag and torture his victims, prosecutors say this is just the beginning. the crime spree spanned ten counties. they're promising more charges. deangelo's court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow. robin. >> thank you, whit. that's what the d.a. told us earlier this morning. appreciate it. a new headline this morning, kensington palace announcing that prince harry has asked his brother, prince william, to be his best man at his wedding to meghan markle next month. the palace tweeting the news with a throwback photo of the

for some kids there's nothing stronger than the bond of a bff, just like in "diary of a wimpy kid." >> we're going to be best friends forever. >> reporter: but not everyone agrees. one massachusetts mom is speaking out against her daughter's former preschool claiming they banned the phrase best friend from being used in the classroom. >> how do you police a 4-year-old from expressing their feelings? >> reporter: mom christine hartwell says it started when her 4-year-old came home upset from pentucket workshop preschool. >> she was sad about what her teacher did. >> reporter: she couldn't refer to one of her friends as her best friend, a policy she claims is nowhere in the preschool's handbook. >> it is nowhere in their philosophy that these best friend terms are banned. >> reporter: while the preschool declined to comment to abc news, they posted this message on their website, saying, in part, contrary to erroneous reports in the news media and on social media, pentucket workshop preschool has no policy banning the use of the term best

friends. hartwell said they sent her this letter justifying their actions saying the term best friend even when used in a loving way can lead other children to feel excluded which can ultimately lead to the formation of cliques or outsiders. author and educator rachel simmons says she applauds the school for teaching their kids to be kind and inclusive but thinks their strategy may be a bit misguided. >> it's focusing on a word, not the behavior, and it's in the behavior where our kids really have the potential to change. the most important thing is to teach inclusive behaviors, to teach healthy friendship behaviors. >> reporter: one study of friendship by researchers at the university of virginia found close friendship strength is associated with higher self-worth and less social anxiety later in life. hartwell is looking for a new school for her daughter. >> i want her to be able to express her thoughts and feelings in a healthy way as

claudette. and know what, i'll tell people about another proud mama. serena williams, she reigned supreme on the court for two decades and counting, winning 23 grand slam titles, four olympic gold medals. i had to chance to talk to her about her new role as wife and mother and the upcoming docu-series where we get an inside look at what it takes to be serena. >> i'm sitting across from a married woman. that's the first i -- >> i know. >> and you're having fun as a mom? >> oh, my god. i'm having the best time as a mom. i just walked out and was giving her extra hugs and extra kisses. it's like she's the best. she just brings out patience in me and i love that about her. >> reporter: serena williams known as a powerhouse global tennis icon. >> 23-time grand slam champion. >> reporter: -- is taking on a brand-new role. one she says is the most important and sweetest of all. motherhood.

>> she's the reason why this all means even more than it did before. >> reporter: in her new hbo docu-series "being serena," the 36-year-old athlete gives viewers unprecedented access to some of her most intimate moments over the past year. why did you want to do this and share so much? >> you know, this came about really organically. when i was younger my dad had always shot video of myself and our whole family and i wanted to do the same thing for olympia and i wanted to start with, you know, her in my belly. >> i felt her kick yesterday. >> reporter: so one day i could go back and show her. >> is that what you want as part of this docu-series, so people can see you vulnerable? >> when i'm on the court, that's not necessarily me. that's just my tennis two hours of the day. there's the mom i can say now, there's the wife i can say now. there's -- and it's just me. it's just serena. i'm just being myself. being serena. >> hey. oh, boy, that's -- >> that kind of worked.

i didn't mean for that. >> reporter: serena also opening up about her latest health scare. >> pregnancy was amazing. it went really well and i didn't have a day of morning sickness. i didn't have anything wrong. then i got to the hospital. i had to have an emergency c-section. then everything was fine for the first like, you know, eight to 12 hours, and then it was after that that things started going crazy. and i've dealt with a lot of issues and i've dealt with blood clots in my lungs and everywhere in my body so, in the back of my mind, i was kind of not expecting it but wary of it so i was like, okay, if i have this symptom i need to tell someone straightaway like let's run these tests. something is not right. and thank god i kind of know my body because things could have ended up different. >> on more than one occasion, my friend, you have been on the brink. >> it's crazy because i'm still trying to come back and recover and trying to, you know, bring everything back. but you know, it hasn't been

easy for me. >> mr. and mrs. alexis ohanian. >> reporter: there by her side throughout her health battle, husband alexis ohanian cheering serena on as she returned to the court in a big way. >> i mean, those billboards when you were coming back, everybody just kind of went, ah. what did that mean for you to see that? >> first of all, i was so surprised. i was like, this is so sweet and then i saw the one, i was like, ah, it's so nice and i saw another one and i was like, wow, this is crazy and then it was four and i was like, i just really was lost for words and i was crying because he knows that's like she means everything to me. >> now you know there is a royal wedding coming up. we know that you're friends with meghan. any advice on the wedding for her? >> i just think it's so important to enjoy the moment, you know, and eat cake. i didn't get to eat mine at the wedding. we were just so having so much fun. but, yes, so i think, you know, if i could give her any advice it would just be to enjoy the

preparation, enjoy the planning. it goes so fast. >> i know you're playing tournaments over that way. any chance that you'll be attending meghan and harry's wedding? >> i don't know. you know, i think it's during one of the tournaments so we'll see if i can make it. robin, don't be asking me them questions. >> you know. >> and yes, all eyes are back on serena. >> serena williams back on the court. >> reporter: as she works to reign supreme once again. >> the reception that you received when you came back, people are ready to see you back on the court. >> it's crazy. it actually makes me want to work harder and do better but, most of all, i just want to do it for me and for my family -- olympia and my family and mostly prove it to me that i can do what i love to do best. i mean i'm putting so much pressure on myself and i expect to go out there and start winning straightaway but i realize that i'm going to take my time, you know, take it slowly. enjoy myself and then i'll be
