40 hours since san francisco sheriffs detectives put hands on a man they had been spur suing since the mid-70s. >> we have just learned that investigators tracked down 72-year-old joseph james deangelo using geneology websites. >> investigators used dna from one of the crime scenes and compared it to one of the genetic profiles available online. they followed clues to identify deangelo as a potential suspect last thursday. >> police then set up under surveillance on deangelo and obtained dna from something he threw away. they got a dna match and arrested him tuesday night. >> he is expected to be arraigned tomorrow afternoon to formally hear the charges against him on two counts of murder. today 7 news was in the citrus heights neighborhood. neighbors noah wilson and their daughter chapel watched police carry bags of everyday out of

his home. anne has been haunted by the case since she was a little girl. >> when i was 11 years ol, we heard the gown u gunshot. he killed two people across from my house. it's something ha just haunted you us for a very long time. our neighborhood was terrified. >> mayor wilson says she is amazed the suspect never left the area, calming it arrogant and sickening. >> the suspect lived there undetected forward years. >> deangelo may have escaped some of the charges over the years. >> they explain how 50 rape victims may not see resolution. >> california law is landing joseph deangelo a pass, until recently the statute of limit allegations for rain was -- limitations for rape was ten years. it is not retroactive. >> this is for cases moving forward. it doesn't allow us to go back in time to these cases that

happened in the 1970s. so we can't seek to have this defendant held accountable for what he did here many decades ago. >> reporter: deangelo would get another brake. a rape conviction in the '70 would likely be seven years. today as sentences have gotten tougher, a convicted rapist faces 25 years to life. prosecutor showed us a flow chart which he described as a rubbics cube that must be filed in order to file rape charges. it's a complicated process. he started 20 years ago to get law ma makers to amend the statute of limitations after hand himming the case of a san jose victim. deangelo received the break in the '70s when he was hired as an officer at two police departments. lori smith santa clara officer explains. >> he was hired at a time before we did psychological mandatory testing. now we do a large bat riff of psy -- battery of psychological

nancy o'malley was a rape coupler and worked directly with one of the victims. >> we've made major paradigm shifts in how we handle these cases and i'm so thankful for that. you know, if this happened now, it would be different. >> reporter: she credits advances in dna processing, along with good old fashioned police work for deangelo's arrest that now gives victims finally peace of mind. >> i lived a wonderful life. i grew up in a wonderful town with so much love and it was a great day for all of is. >> in walnut creek, abc 7 news. >> we are learning more about deangelo's past, he served in the navy vietnam. he graduated basic training in san diego. that was december of 1964. he became a police officer after his military career, working in the up to of exeter from 1973 to 1976 and then in auburn in the sierra foot hells from '76 to

'79 until he was fired for shop lifting. today, one of his former co-workers shared his memories of working with. . investigators believe deangelo may be the infamous ransacker who committed 100 burglaries in that area in the mid-1970. >> absolutely no indication he had a problem the the can peck up on stuff. >> not in this case. his co-worker described him as being quote strange and he didn't fit in with exeter's closely knit group of police officers. new at 6:00, we're hearing from deangelo's own sister who still lives in exeter a reporter from fresno when to the her house today. she spoke briefly but declined to be shown on camera. >> it kind of send you into

sexual assault claim runs out after 12 years. the only one whose time had not run out was andrea constand, still five of them, including baker kiner were allowed to testify in this retrial. andrea constand became the legal voice of dozens of other women who had publicly accused bill cosby of sexual assault. >> good morning. >> reporter: five other women were allowed to testify to help support her claims. their names were read out todayy by the district attorney from montgomery county, apartment. >> janice dickerson, janice baker, kinney. >> reporter: janice baker kinney who still lives in the bay area met cosby at a ms. za party at a home in reno, where he was staying. >> i was sexually assaulted by him in may of 1982. >> reporter: her reaction today, may this verdict open the flood gates to those who have been

hiding their shame for far too long and give them the courage to come forward. you are not alone. >> it took a great deal of courage. in the beginning, many were not believed. >> reporter: he opened for him during his bay area shows. >> it's sad because of all of the work that begins, that was is up incredible work, both if terms of the field and education. >> reporter: copeland says the accusations and today's verdict will forever tarnish cosby's reputation. and how did we get here? well, these rumors had been around for sometime. right? but a stand-up comedian hannibal burris mocked cosby one night calling him a rapist. someone in the audience with a cell phone recorded it. the skit was then posted on the philadelphia magazine website and it went viral.

includi including domestic violence in february. wednesday around, an attorney for foster's ex-girlfriend released a statement saying that her compliept made up the entire story. his goal was to trash his career. she went on to say she previously sustained injuries in a fight with another woman and had the video to prove it. despite her attempt to recan't the story the district attorney's office opted to move forward with the case. legal analyst stephen clark says it's unlikely she will face charges of her own for lying to verdicts. >> by coming on early on and saying i'd like to okay at this and till what this will happen, it will december the da's office doesn't want to compound this problem. >> reporter: stephanie

maybe mid-level clouds, the system that is generating this unsual weather. we have a storm brewing out to sea off the coast of the pacific northwest. it's counterclock wise, generating cooler manner air, producing some occasionally gusty winds and over in the sierras, generated an outbreak of thunderstorms, which are quite widespread. they'e tapering off right now. that's our weather maker. right now, we're looking at mainly sunny skies, as we look eastward over the bay. mid-level clouds are drifting throughout over the bay. 55 degrees here in san francisco. 67 across the bay and oakland, san jose, 54 degrees at half moon bay, this is looking westward, you can see lots of bright sunlight renexting off the bay water there. temperature readings 62 at santa rosas. fairfield and concord and

livermore. one more look at golden gate, traffic is flowing freely, i might add. we see low clouds pushing inland i don't have night. although, we don't see the evidence of those low clouds, where they appeared earlier in the evening, earlier this week. we see scattered sprinkles tomorrow and saturday, the cooler than average pattern we have right now, will continue through the week. overnight, look for partly cloudy conditions, upper 40s and low 50. tomorrow we see breezy conditions at the coast. high temperatures barely reaching into the mid- to upper-60s inland. so it will be cooler than average for this time of the year. a mainly dry day. we may see sprinkles developing up north. here's the forecast, 5:00 tomorrow morning, we see widespread low clouds and fog moving into the viewing area mid-day tomorrow. later in the evening hours, we see another outbreak of

stocks climbed today at a market rally by a technology company, facebook's stock jumped 14 points, equal to 9%, proof of how excited investors were after reading its first quarter earnings report the dow gained 238 points the nasdaq went up by 114. stock in amazon rose 4% during the trading day. is up 6% after hours. it's reaction to news that its first quarter profit more than doubled from a year ago,
