in the case involving stormy daniels. but he said cohen handled very little of his legal work and appeared to distance himself from his long-time fixer. >> i would say probably the big thing is his business, and they're looking into something having to do with his business. i have nothing to do with his business. i can tell you he's a good guy. >> isn't his business your attorney, mr. president? >> just so you understand. i have many, many attorneys. sadly, i have so many attorneys you wouldn't even believe. >> the president mentioning cohen's business about a dozen times during that interview. within hours, prosecutors in new york cited the president's comments in court papers to bolster their argument that most of the records the fbi seized from cohen is not protected by attorney-client privilege. >> they said if he played such a small role in the president's legal issues that must play a small part. verbal fireworks erupted on capitol hill as epa chief scott pruitt answered tough questions. he denied he did anything wrong and insisted he has nothing to hide.

but one congressman told pruitt he was unfit to hold public office. mary bruce has details. >> reporter: the embattled head of the epa, scott pruitt, defiant as he walked into a grilling on capitol hill. inside, lawmakers let loose. >> you seem to view the epa budget as a personal slush fund. >> if i were the president, i wouldn't want your help, i'd just get rid of you. >> i have nothing to hide as it relates to how i've run the agency the past 16 months. >> but again and again pruitt deflected blame, pointing the finger at his own staff, saying they were the ones that ordered a $43,000 private phone booth for his office. >> i was not involved in the approval of the $43,000. and if i had known about it, congressman, i would have refused it. >> that seems a bit odd. if something happens in my office especially to the tune of $43,000, i know about it before during and after.

>> reporter: he claims it was his security team that decided he should fly first class. one republican congressman trying to help. >> it is not illegal. it may look bad, but it's not illegal. >> reporter: pruitt was also asked whether he authorized hefty pay raises for two long-time aides. pruitt previously said he knew nothing about it, but now he acknowledges he did know about one of those raises. >> that decision was made by -- >> yes or no? >> delegations gave that authority. >> so that's a yes. one of the aides who received the substantial raise said you were aware of and supported the raises, is that true? >> i think with respect to the raises -- >> was that true? >> i was not aware of the amount. >> reporter: after six hours of testimony the one question still unanswered. >> mr. administrator, why not take responsibility. doesn't the buck stop with you?

>> reporter: sources inside the white house admit this was a tough day for pruis. he likely didn't change many minds. but he was likely speaking to an audience of one, the president, and they say it's his support that matters most. mary bruce, capitol hill. also on capitol hill, the house chaplain is speaking out for the first time about his forced resignation by speaker paul ryan. father patrick conroy says he was never given an explanation. an aide to ryan also refused to offer a reason, but democrats contend it stems from a prayer last year about economic disparities among social classes. overnight, history, a historic summit between north and south korea. kim jong un crossing the border for the very time to meet with moon jae-in. officials from seoul are describing the meetings as sincere and candid. and the talks were candid on denuclearization. they discussed healing scars and kim jokingly promised that he

will no longer wake up moon with as many missile tests. angela merkel arrives in washington today with the same message delivered by french president macron. that the u.s. and europe must be united on issues like the iran nuclear deal, but this visit will be very different than macron's. jordan phelps has the details. >> reporter: it was just a few days ago that the president pulled out all the stops for the french president. and already he is welcoming another world leader to the white house. german chancellor angela merkel. but there will be no fancy military parade or state dinner on this trip. her visit is strictly business. while macron and trump made for fast friends, merkel's first oval office meeting was remembered because there was no handshake at all. but for all the differences

between the two visits, merkel arrives in washington with the same mission as the french president, to try and persuade the u.s. president not to tear up the iran nuclear deal. >> we find it at the initiative of the united states, that is why we cannot say we should get rid of it like that. >> reporter: president trump has repeatedly threatened to withdraw from the agreement. >> in the event we are not able to reach a solution working with congress and our allies, then the agreement will be terminated. >> reporter: but next month he could actually make good on those threats when he faces a deadline. while president trump has not indicated whether he's made a final decision, president macron predicted after his visit with the president that the united states would withdraw from the agreement. we're learning about another summit. the white house has announced

meeting with president trump. >> she's located just a few miles from the demilitarized zone, and there are some 5,000 journalists there in that room with her. she said there was an audible gasp, many of those folks were south koreans at the time. the president expected to meet with kim jong un at some point next month. do we have an idea of a location as of yet? >> reporter: no. it's a wild guess. there's talk about singapore and mongolia. i heard that panmunjom, where they're meeting today is ruled out. basically, the problem is we hear that kim jong un's private plane cannot fly more than six hours. so the best bet for now is mongolia or singapore. >> all right. standing by to see the results
